  • Then & Now set visit - rare Hill Valley 1885 set footage from Back to the Future Part 3!
    We were given access to this incredible set in March 1990, following the completion of principal photography in January 1990. Sadly, these amazing sets can no longer be found as they were destroyed in a fire in 1996.
    👉 NOTE: See part 1 of the raw footage set visit: • Back to the Future Par...
    👉 NOTE: See part 2 of the raw footage set visit: • Back to the Future Par...
    Living in the area at the time, we were all very aware of the large Back to the Future 3 production. On the set, we were fortunate to have one of the productions' extras along for the tour to help us out. This video was taken before we had seen the completed film.
    The clock tower was lost to wind damage, but virtually everything else, including the saloon, iconic train depot, bank, butcher shop, jail, undertaker, Joe Statler's horse stables, and Doc Brown's workshop, remained for our visit.
    This film set was located on Red Hills Ranch near the town of Sonora, California.

    Visited the prop department during filming. They were set up in the Railtown 1897 Tri-Dam building.
    They had, if I remember correctly, five Delorean time machines. One was the 1950's version, one was a hover craft version that was being modified with train wheels, one was a regular time machine they had as backup, and one was split in half for close ups of the dash. The guys there were cool, and let me sit in the original version. Also, being constructed out of balsa wood in a corner was the full sized rail guard the train crashes through at the end of the film. I remember one of the guys mentioning they were getting ready to transport the 50's car out to Monument Valley for shooting. At the time I had no idea what they ware talking about. LOL I'm sure there were other things laying around that I missed, but being able to sit in a real Delorean time machine was just mind blowing.

    Two of my high schools friends snuck onto the set when they weren't filming and ended up getting ticketed and tossed by the Sheriff's dept. for trespassing. A couple weeks later me and 3 other friends snuck out there while they were filming. Couldn't see much because we were hiding near the trees but a buddy climbed up a tree to get a better look and all he saw was somebody from the crew taking a dump near some bushes and the guy just pulled up his pants when he was finished. Went back a couple weeks later with a friend after they were done filming and actually snuck on the set. On the way to the set there was a Deloreon fitted with locomotive wheels. I snagged Mr. Fusion off the back. It was a Krupps coffee grinder with a funky base bondoed to it. I had it for years but I lost it in one of my many moves. My buddy snagged the Hill Valley sign you see @ 2:55 mark. It hung in his garage for years. I also grabbed a nice cast iron spitoon that was inside the bar and a yoke for a horse. The only thing I have left is the spitoon. We were nervous walking around there so we didn't load up too much. I don't think any security was there that night but you never know. Couldn't wait to see the movie when it came out and was a little disappointed when it did.

    Where is Clara school and house filming location located? Always wanted to know that

    • @jntipton
      @jntipton  10 месяцев назад +2

      It’s right in the same vicinity there - if you stand near the train station you can see the rooftop of the school. Or, you could at the time before it burned down.

    I always thought of Doc's barn...I get the way that leaving all those removed roof slats makes for great dappled light that looks great in camera but Jesus.. he is always so screwed when it rains.

    Isn't that an awful lot of money to reshoe a horse back then? Even if you figured in the cost of the horse, $80 seems like way more than it would be

      That would be amazing. At the time of this video all production had just moved out. Subsequent to this the entire set burned down in a wild fire I’m fold was started by lightning , , , kind of ironic given the clock tower and lightning etc
