Dude, when I was green and was diagnosing a deli display case. I was taking the whole case apart looking for evap fans. Once I was done taking everything apart and found no fans, I stopped and thought things through and figured out this damn thing cools with no fans. So there I went putting everything back together. It was sink or swim for me when I first started as technician, my supervisor was no help as he didn’t know much either, but was kept with the company because he is a good brown noser.
Good video Dave. I've seen one of my coworkers a bit less experienced. Try to add refrigerant to the True static coil one we have. He said the pressure on the low side was low. I told him to stop, and think, you are working witha static evaporator. I also told him to gauge up on both sides of the unit, not on just one. He found the head pressure was at 275 PSI. I asked him if the condenser coil was clean. He said it looked clean. I asked him to shine a bright light through it. He said he could not see light from the other side. I just told him to clean the condenser coil throughly. He told me he could not believe how dirty it was. I asked him what his final pressures were. Low side 10.5 PSI. High side 110 PSI.
I 💖 when the customers have a case warm still selling product, usually just as warm as the air temp. Some of the Aldi stores in my area that I service do the same thing, selling soft ice cream and warm deli meats when a case is down. 😃

Great Video Dave In my short career ,I’ve came across dudes with 10+ years experience that have done exactly what you’ve just showed in this video . I was working on a single door True freezer TUC 27 I believe, unit was a 134a I show up unit was at 28-32 degrees I gauge it up 22psig suction and 190 or so on the head pressure . I recovered the charge unit had about 11/2 pounds of refrigerant . I asked the dude how did you charge it he said well R134 A you need to be at a 20degree evap so that’s what I did . I was like wow . That unit only took a factory charge of 8ozs on startup I had about a 18-20 suction and about a 175-180 head as the box started cooling head pressure dropped as well as my suction pressure . I told the dude as the box starts reaching temp your suction pressure will drop . When your close to set point you will have between 8-12psig on your suction, needs to learn how to use a pt chart and understand pressure and temperature. Again I just wanted to share that with you Mr. Expert 🤫😎
That poor compressor! Good call with the reclaim. I've had the luck of servicing these cases quite a few times. They can be tricky if they are in high ambient or workers leave the doors open because they really ice up. Good lesson showing the suction range and temp.

nate belden best thing that could happen to you, my mentor is also named Dave and he's just like him a well of know-how and knowledge, after learning with him for a bit more than a year and a half (from scratch, but I did a whoooole lot of info digging in my spare time too, I did a bit of installs with a guy who's like these two but on the installs side of the job, I learned a lot from him too) I was alone on the road with a van doing repairs, even though I'm operational I'm still miiiles away from Dave and Dave lol
I'm new to this game, and when I first saw you evacuate a system to weigh the charge instead of determining +/- amounts from SH or SC, I thought you were being a bit extreme and over the top. Not now. I think this is the best example there is on how the importance of system weight and what the reintroduction of spec weight can do in ensuring a properly running system, and saving time in the long run. Perhaps minor tweaking with gas notwithstanding. And with leaks always a concern on an older, 1st time worked on or in a while unit (by my mits anyway), I would imagine it's a good way to know if it has a leak to be found as well? Great resource all around. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us new guys! It's always nice to NOT have to re-invent the wheel!!!!
Just a little to much Gas Ha Ha Crazy ! I also run into this a lot with 134a systems Good advise just recover right away and weigh in and stop the guess work
Good video. When you recovered the charge how do you know if the refrigerant is good to reuse. Do you pull a vacuum on the tank so the charge can be reused? Thanks.
When there's no sticker with the charge, stay safe, some of these static machines evaporate at -20°C (-4°F) (, be careful and don't go for a -5°C (23°F) right away, I've blown a compressor doing that (not the only problem, there was an oil plug in the condenser and lots of acidity due to previously burned compressor stator windings but still, main was burned, start wasn't, which means HP too high, the oil in the condenser coil didn't help, maybe the oil was pushed in the discharge by liquid flooding back due to excess charge)). Refer to the high side pressure aswell, and if there's no valve on the high side, don't be afraid to solder a schrader, a new schrader and 30min soldering it will still cost less than a compressor and 2h replacing it on warranty. And if you have any slightest doubt, change the effin dehydrating filter.
reminds a few yrs back for a Japanese restaurant he had a 6ft display case for some who knows what lol... i got there .. compressor was done for... it had 5 pounds of Freon in it i said did someone else come here and fiddle with this .. he said yes a family member.. ... sheesh but this case had another problem there was zero Air circulation he didn't want me to cut the bottom front to put a grill there was no chance to install water cooled he has a basement just not under that side of the restaurant i ended up pulling the pipe above the ceiling he called a carpenter to cover my pipes ... ran the pipe above the ceiling than as soon as i knew i was above the basement i ran it down
Now that I think about it lp: 30psi and hp 250 psi would be ok on the same case if the case was running r404a. Thought about wrong gas but since you put the gas you recuperated back in the circuit if it were r404a, at 150psi it would condense at 70°F which wouldn't work at all. So coincidence I guess.
Why would they have added gas? Did the owner call a different company because no cool condition? They probably added gas it started cooling, then quit again because an overcharge. Makes me think there may have been a restriction or contamination. Don't mind me I'm just a rookie who over thinks thanks for the video.

I ran a crossed a Similar unit to day. Some times I think they look at Test pressures and charge to that... lol Great one again. Factory charge.

Well even without the shadow of a doubt, change the filter anytime you add or replace anything on the circuit
