  • The 3rd generation BMW 5 Series brought a lot of interesting premiers. For the first time all-wheel drive was available in a 5 Series. Moreover besides the sedan body style, the range expanded into the “Touring” wagon. Let’s have a look behind the scenes of the development of BMWs 3rd Generation BMW 5 Series.

These were the gold times of BMW, after 2004 it all became kind of...soulless. Cars are like mobile phones, we all have new iPhones and Samsung's etc., but deep down we all know Nokia 3310 was the best phone ever. It's the same with old BMW's.

I disagree on that. I owned E30, E39, E60, E65, F10, G31 and G30 and drove almost every 3 and 5-series from the early 90's to today. When I compare my 318i E30 or the 520i E39 with my current 540i G30, I can't say that my G30 has less 'soul' than the other two. It still is pure driving pleasure (no xDrive!) and the engine is waay better than the old ones. Way more powerful but still very smooth, quick-responding and 'lively'.

I'm currently the owner of two wonderful E39s, a 520i Touring (currently on its second M54B22 engine - that car has been like a sick puppy, but I still love it) and a 1997 535i auto, which is the real workhorse - bought on eBay over 2 years ago for £595, it's never let me down. in my opinion the bemmers made between 2003 and 2015 are without a soul. they don't have that special something that the old ones have... that magic that connects to the owner's soul. i like to call it "cuore verso anima" (italian for "heart to soul").
in stead the very late generation seems to be very impressive in every category. well done, peeps!
PS: as a bmw fanatic, i beg for BMW not to fall the electric motor rabbit hole. please keep the internal combustion engine! :(

Thoughts on the 525tds and 524td? Need a diesel (pre 1991) but 525tds are hard to find... Besides the hp & intercooler what advantages will the 525tds give me? Cheers!!

e34 520i should not be slow. ok its not M5 remember. but still it should be fun to drive and be fairly quick with sharp handling.
get the engine looked at by a specialist, maybe there is something wrong with it ?
air leaks, dirty filters, dirty injectors, do a compression test,
      has it done a big mileage / ( KMs ) ?
mine is just slightly less power than my 525. yes i have both and like them both. no tuning or mod's on either.
520 is deffo lots of fun to drive. and quick.

The E32 was certainly a lot more advanced than the old W126, which was a magnificent car but obsolete by the early 1990s. Unfortunately, BMW then didn't really develop the 7 much, the E38 V12 in particular received few changes from the E32, and meanwhile Mercedes had launched the W140 with the 48-valve M120 V12, and the 32-valve M119 V8. The E38 is a wonderful car, but it's really more a big E39/modernised E32, and consequently had no hope of competing effectively with the W140. The W124 E-class was also a fine car and continued to sell well alongside the E34. Only when the E39 and W210 arrived did BMW establish supremacy in that sector - the 210 was ugly, badly-built and rusted like hell. The E39 was possibly the finest mass-production car ever made, and still the best in its class when it was replaced in 2003. Personally, I think BMW should have left it in production for a whole decade - the E60 was loaded with tech that wasn't fully developed and so became a nightmare to live with.

Richard Harrold Very true, agree 100%, although I personally prefer the e34 over the e39. Everything you said is dead on. And my preference to the e34 is only attributed to ergonomics and less isolation than the e39, imo e39 is probably by far the better daily driver, but e34 the more fun chassis to pilot, ironically though the better daily driver chassis wise suffers more VANOS drivetrains, the m62 timing chain faults, the s62 vs the s38, the e34 drivetrains were tanks, aside from BMW's typical weak cooling systems.

      Derek Darch
I have to say, my non-VANOS M62 has had no timing chain problems at all. Don't forget, the E34's M60s had Nikasil bore wear problems, and the M20s, M50s, M30s and S38s all had problems relating to their cast iron engine blocks... the E39 engines (apart from US-market M52s) were all alloy, and the S62 in particular is a masterpiece. At 394bhp (400PS) it's hardly trying... in the Ascari A10, it makes 625bhp without any forced induction. My E39s have had no cooling problems at all, the systems are absolutely massive. They're tremendous fun to punt down a B-road too.

@@mislavkonjik2827 ooh, tough question. The M104 was certainly a better engine than the M20, and probably better than the M50. The M119 V8s (at least the closed deck block versions) were very much bigger physically than the M60 and had more cooling capacity and more room to grow in displacement. I like the E34 a lot, but of the two, I'd probably choose the W124...

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 2 года назад

@@mislavkonjik2827 pretty sure the 124 sold in bigger volumes, and unlike the E34, its platform lived on at Ssangyong.

The E12,E28 have a BMW unique design but look obsolete. The E39,E60,F10,G30 look more modern but less unique.I think the design of E34 is the best because it looks modern but still unique.
