We downsized to a small stone cottage circa 1756. Our vision was for bringing this centuries old house into a warm and comfortable home. It took a lot of work and “love”, but has been a dream come true. Gayle, you were such a help to make our downsizing doable. I love my weekly fix of The Clutter Fairy (and Ed) to keep this cottage organized and livable. Thank you!
I think I'm entering a seasonal depression. I've been taking several weeks break because of the cold and a recent breakup. I still do my daily habits like taking the trash, vacuuming, dishes, etc. I get rid of donations as I see items that can go. Every morning I make it part of my routine to put the donations in my trunk when I take the trash to the truck. But right now I just am not doing any big projects. I need a mental break. I may not start again til December or even the first of the year. However, my family has come a long way and I still watch your videos religiously. You guys are amazing and thank you so much for all your support and encouragement. And even for featuring one of my comments in your last video. That meant a lot to me, as I'm feeling really down lately. Best always Sarafina. 💕
I think you are so smart, to go slowly right now. You are doing way, way more than most people who have no problems at all. We are not in a race, where the fastest wins, but a longer personal journey. And Gayle is so soothing and kind, that I think she is the best decluttering expert ever. Even if I do not have the energy to do her homework assignments right away, I end up doing them a few weeks later, when I have more energy.
I am having fake grass laid - do needed to get rid of my spade, fork tools etc. Ringing round found a charity that does volunteer gardening for the elderly. They were delighted with my donation. I would much rather they were used than go into a tool hoarder's shed😀👍 Love you guys..watch every week 😘
If you are really struggling with clothing, just donate it even if you're not sure if the condition warrants it. Better out than in your house, and maybe you can make a small monetary donation to make up for the work you've given them. Done is better than perfect.
I cleaned out my closet and got rid of things I would not wear. I got two items repaired and ready for pick up this week. Items are now under 30 items. I also cleaned out a drawer of shame - now I feel better about all those single socks went into the garbage! Thank you for encouraging weekly challenges. I am in Nova Scotia.
I learned that home decor magazines, photo shoots always "airbrush out/delete" the unattractive parts of homes...like ugly electric sockets, stained bathtubs, peeling paint, garbage cans etc. After learning I was being sold some nonexistent, staged decor, now I do not idealize how any home can look anymore. Instead of concentrating on decorating, now I try to get as much daily use as possible out of my space. Having a formal dining room for one holiday meal a year, may be beautiful. But it is a waste of space the other 364 days a year. So now, I cover the formal dining room table (until the holiday), and the kids use it for their school projects/homework/crafts. This is not be my ideal, perfect decor for a formal dining room; but it is real living, for right now.
Excellent content, here. I JUST FINISHED organizing the garage....I spent WEEKS doing this project...many times, I stayed up all night or most of the night to work on this project....its done..., I too can celebrate....the AMAZING feeling is awesome!🙂 Yesterday, I was in my closet....NOW.... it's organized....but's its full... time to work on the closet.... LOVE the thought thru out this entire video.... As I organized the garage...I made up some rules early on into the project... 1) Easy in 2) Easy out But most of all.... 3) Streamline each area.... I remember thinking just how "overwhelmed" I felt trying to dive into that organizing situation....before, I got this project done....and, thinking would I EVER REACH COMPLETION ?!? BUT, I did...and, everyone who has come out here has commented just how nice it looks....back to the closet...it is PRETTY MUCH "easy in"...."easy out".....but it is NOT streamlined..... Hmmmmmm.....I think I see the common thread here.... I loved this video so much....I'm going back to listen to it, again. Thank you...thank you...thank you.🙂
I've spent the last few years preparing to downsize. My vision has simply been "less." I really enjoy the more minimalist look as furnishings, knickknacks, and other items left the house. My house is now on the market and my next smaller home's vision will continue to be "less."
Great show today. I keep thinking about the 2 chairs that I planned to keep after my move. You asked me if they were comfortable and I had not really thought about it. I sat in one for a few minutes and decided they can go with the other donations and I will buy comfortable chairs for my new space because I want my visitors to be comfortable.
I really loved what you said about creating spaces in your home for introverts and extroverts other than that's a great concept. Typically parties get loud and it might be nice for introverts that come to have a space away from other people even if the people that live in the house are extroverts.
My vision for my house is to be comfy, clean, inviting, and easy maintenance. I want a home people want to come to. But, as I get older, easy maintenance is imperative. It means removing clutter, having things that hide dirt/dog fur, etc. I don’t want anything that requires constant straightening or plumping, or dusting, etc. Life’s too short for all that.
I had an idea (which you've already touched on) while binge watching your videos this weekend. How about a program (or series) that deals with dealing with helping us to id the negative self talk that stalls our best life progress (as it relates to our possessions), what that looks like practically (cause we all want our junk to look pretty NOW) and then be able to identify the positive reinforcement that comes with a baby step that comes out well....an area done, a friend invited over, being able to do a craft project, you name it. Love all your videos. I live in NE Ohio but was in Houston (Westheimer and Post Oak)for several months in 2003 (over the winter).! Really enjoyed not having to wear heavy winter gear! (And one less thing to manage)
Idk if this channel is poised to tackle this issue in depth, but a channel I watch called A Hoarder's Heart really tackles these feelings. She decluttered a significant portion of her basement hoard to give her son's a play area! That was a really poignant and heartwarming moment to watch for sure. She also goes through the feelings behind her old hoarded belongings and how she is working through those as she decluttered things at a manageable pace.
After struggling with my weight for the last 7 years, I've got clothes in 4 different sizes. I've decided that is I don't get into the next size down (UK 20) by next may, I'm donating the smallest size (UK 16). The year after next, if I'm not into that size still, the UK size 18s go. I've already gone through them and clothes I wouldn't buy if I was that size right this second got donated a few weeks ago. I gave the size 16s to a friend and she is using the smarter clothes for interview outfits.
I always choose my own style. I keep some things incase they're worth anything which maybe is silly bec videos for example and old books incase worth money oneday. Silly really. Just buy a piece of gold lol
This video is so helpful to evaluate the current state of affairs in the house and plan for the future. Thank you so much

Did the move take 250 years or did you do it 250 years ago?

I use single socks to dust or clean with once, then discard.
Thats wonderful!!!

This is the topic that motivates me the most to declutter and actually purge. Thanks!

Hey, I love my Pier 1 candleholders! LOL
Love the idea of a mission statement for my home. I will keep this in mind as I design, build, and move into my smaller age-in-place house this year.

That's exactly what I do photograph the room
Wonderful content. Wishing you and Ed a relaxing Thanksgiving with family and friends.
Yes that's what motivates me I pretend I'm helping a friend at her house
