Why Faye CAN'T Be An Archer in Fire Emblem Echoes But IS one in Fire Emblem Heroes (Analysis)

- In today's episode we're taking a look at why Intelligent Systems decided to make Faye an Archer in Fire Emblem Heroes yet will be impossible for her to be one in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. I think there are many subtle reasons behind this weird decision, and ultimately none of her actual available Echoes classes worked for her. Firstly, I think they wanted a diverse banner with two female characters from Alm's route, and since they included Clair, Faye couldn't be another Pegasus Knight in the banner. They knew Genny was coming in Celica's banner, as well as Mist, so I think they wanted to avoid adding another Cleric unit, too. I'm sure they also wanted to avoid Mage bloat since Celica's banner was going to include three new Mage characters, so that option's out, too. If she was a Cavalier it would have made it so the banner had three blue units, so that didn't work (they tend to like making banner colors diverse with only about two of one color at most, otherwise the odds would probably be too high for that color in a normal banner). Cavaliers in Gaiden and Echoes can't use Swords, so it wouldn't make sense for her to be a Sword Cavalier, either. This leaves her as a Gray unit. There is no playable Thief or Ninja class in Fire Emblem Gaiden and Echoes, so it wouldn't really make sense for her to be that either. So it was down to Cleric and Archer. Like stated earlier, I think they wanted to avoid too many clerics, so they didn't have much of a choice, and just made her an Archer. Unfortunately though, the Archer class is a male only class in Gaiden and Echoes, so she won't be able to be one in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Ultimately it's a weird situation all around.

Lucky Crit Well, since you asked about how i feel about Faye, i'll copy-paste my thoughts:
Tharja, Camilla, and Faye are all considered Yanderes. Two are (mostly) beloved (see Voting Gauntlets), one is hated. Hmm, i wonder why. Is it because Faye is the least fanservicy of the three?
For real though, Faye is getting more hate than she actually deserves. Especially when she's tame compared to Tharja and Camilla, and the game implies that the war is having an effect on Faye (see B-Support with Alm) which is why she's so chill with killing enemies.
And Faye's A-Support with Alm shows that she genuianly loves him. Tharja, on the other hand, just lusts after Robin. And Camilla's just the big sister.
Tbh, Faye should be compared to Malica from FE3. That makes more sense than comparing her to Tharja.

Tharja doesn't really escape the category of creepy stalker.
I had this discussion before on serene's forest.
I don't remember instances where Tharja expressed willingness to kill people in Robin's name *just to please him* (that's a key detail, which Ironically Henry offers that TO Tharja in a support), or threaten violence on anyone that gets between her and Robin's affection.
Faye has done one of those things as far as I'm aware.
Camilla has done both of these things AND isn't above what she sees as a mercy killing out of love in Birthright.
Basically, I don't see how Tharja is a yandere. Creepy stalker? Yes. But not quite yandere.
omghegotagun Faye's B-Support with Alm implies that Faye wanting to kill in his name is actually an effect the war is having on her. Further supporting this is that Faye was against fighting in the beginning.
What made me appreciate Faye is because, in her A-Support with Alm, not only does she actually confess, but she acknowledges that it isn't the best time to confess (they are on a battlefield). And when she gets friendzoned, she actually accepts it, and even says she figured it would happen anyway. For as obbsesed as she is with Alm, she reasonably accepted the rejection.

What made me dislike Faye is her support talk with Silque. Like damn, she's so rude it's crazy. I get she likes Alm but the girl is obsessive

Because even after she gets rejected, she still stays loyal and keeps her feelings for him.
And in her ending, by the way, spoilers, duh.
She does return to Ram Village, aaand is the only villager to do so.
She ends up getting married- with a cuck. Uh, I mean... a very nice guy.

Just exactly where does Faye go?
She coould go and pay a visit to Alm at his castle, but why wouldn't she just tell her family that?
One theory to me, is that she goes and stalks Alm just like the good ol' days because she just can't let go of the past.
I mean, I could understand why she wouldn't tell her family that. Buuut I would gind funny if she did.

Anyways, I do believe that Faye gets a lot of hate because of her unhealthy relationship with Alm, but if people were to look at her perspective she has a lot of potential.
And I just wish intelligent systems fleshed her out more, to be honest, she has unrequited love like Cordelia aaand I think thats pretty tragic.
I actually ended up feeling bad, but if you actually think she's tragic just wait until you see these two-

There are multiple ways to make a decent Faye - Silque support but IS just had to make Faye destroy potential friendship with Silque. Try compare her supports to Genny, she also didn’t have other motives to join the group but somehow IS manage to flesh a tiny bit about her backstory through Genny - Sonya support.

My guess is they wanted all villagers to stay in their villager design, and a bow fit her design best. Staff also couldve worked but there were already enough staffs in the pool with no real strength or diversity to it
I really like her design, the decision to make her obsession with Alm her only character trait is so infuriating. She looks like a more down to earth/motherly figure/ kind and caring person that can make hard decisions if the need comes, hell she could be even the girl that everyone has a crush but is oblivious to it... so much potential but nooo, let's just have another anime trope that doesn't have a personality of it's own... *Sigh*

Cleric Faye gets early game physic and having 2 healers made Alm's early game insanely easy for me. I would just throw all my units (including fliers into archers) to the front line without thinking and faye would just physic everyone to full health easily. I'd use Silque to heal Faye and vice versa.
In heroes, I think Veronica stated that the firesweep bow was enchanted allowing Faye to use the bow in the first place. So even in heroes, the fact that she can't use a bow is more so true.

@@disgustof-riley8338 I found it. It was Paralogue 5 -1. After looking at it again, I think it was implied that that Veronica gave her the ability to use a bow. Not specifically saying that "the firesweep bow was enchanted" like I said back then.
Another theory could be that the Embla contract binding forced Faye to have the ability to use a bow that she can't use in echoes.
This would bring Faye up to the current class standards of fire emblem where anyone can be an archer, where she wasn't before.
I agree with this, I just think they should've picked another character instead of Genny from Celica's route and made Faye a cleric with the "again" skill so you could use her as a healer or a dancer. Or maybe even make "again" her special so it'd make her an interesting healer to say the least.

Otaku Emblem Faye is arguably even worse than both Tharja and Camilla, as literally her only character trait is being obsessed with Alm. Most of her quotes in Heroes are her wishing she could be with Alm. At least Tharja and Camilla had other traits.

I'm about a week late to the party, but I heard that Gaiden (and by extension its remake) was really different even from more traditional games like Path of Radiance (which was my first FE game), so I've been watching your videos to try to see exactly how different it is. My main concern was that the changes would be frustrating or annoying instead of fun and unique, but so far it doesn't seem like that's the case. You've been really helpful and that ending killed me. Mozu was my favorite character in Fates, and I wanted Faye to be an archer just like my Mozu. I was so disappointed to find out she was the only villager who can't be an archer, especially since the promotional material for Echoes doesn't make this clear.

Honestly, I assumed it was just because of cupid's arrow, cause you know, she's madly in love with Alm so it seemed fitting.
She could have been a red tome unit with “again” as her personal assist skill (Like Sacrifice with Micaiah)... with her tone being either Nosferatu or Seraphim. But then Boey or Mae would be replaced with Saber, Kamui, Valbar, or Leon which wouldn’t make much sense with any of them
It's even more weird when you remember Faye is an Echoes-only character.
I liked Faye in the Heroes reveal because I didn't know her character but after seeing her in Echoes, she is probably my least favorite character in the entire series. She's pretty one note Alm this, Alm that, she might as well be Orsin's dead wife but replace "darling..." with "Alm...". Her support with Silque is nasty too.
Shame too because I liked her girl next door, sewing hobby aesthetic.
I'll make her a cleric so she can worship her lord and savior Alm.

I dislike Faye because she was rude to Silque in their C support and I really like Silque! I just wish there was more to her than obsessing over Alm. It feels like she's a less sexualized version of Tharja and Camilla :(

that reminds me, Sheena from Mystery is a sword user in that game but an axe user in Heroes. This makes a bit more sense as official art for Sheena back then had her wielding an axe even though Mystery had no axe users (Sheena is still a sword user in New Mystery despite that game adding axes back into the game), but it's still strange

In Fire Emblem Gaiden and its remake, male units have more class options than female units. After promoting from Villager, female units can wield swords only after promoting to Priestess. In Fire Emblem Gaiden and its remake, Cavaliers can only wield lances. In other Fire Emblem games, they can also wield swords. In Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, Cavaliers can wield swords only on foot (via the Dismount command). In the Elibe games, they can wield axes after promoting to Paladin.
So out of curiosity, do you think the Bridal banner's coloration (2 blue, 2 neutral) changes your opinion on why Faye was made an archer, at least from the color diversity standpoint?

I read countless guides that said that the only correct option for Faye was to use her as a Cleric. Meanwhile, Faye my Pegasus Knight is only level eight and has 15+ stats in Strength, Speed, and Luck. Don't know if I'm just lucky with level ups, or if people are too reliant on stats.
My Cleric Faye is slightly better than my Silque so far. She's pretty darn good. But I'm sure Faye will be decent in most classes. She really can struggle with her Speed growth though so you may have been lucky!
I watched your video on character growths along with Ghasts that basically said that Clair was a superior PK option, but their stats so far are not even close. Faye outshines her in everything except skill. I even looked into character stat growths just to compare, and it seems like Clair should be the better unit, but she isn't. FE variance I guess???
I think it's honestly because of your luck because most times she'd struggle to get speed whereas Clair would get speed almost every level. As a cleric though, her superior bulk and spell list makes her utility game a strong one. (also Idon'tknowwhyalmbeplayingaroundwithstuckupchurchgirlswhenbestgurlfayeisheretostay!)
well now it makes a lot of sense lol i do enjoy having a character that uses different weapons that are not based on the game although as long as they make sense then im happy but yeah i did really like Faye in Echoes but it does bug me that her ending is that she moves on with another guy, marries him and has kids with him but still leaves to sort of stalk Alm like they should of just left it as she moved on or just could of been left perminently heart broken wouldnt be as bad either because then she isnt just forcing herself to try and hopelessly move on with someone she clearly doesnt fully love which is a major yikes as for her in game though she rips through everything thrown at her as a pegasus knight lol

she also gets rescue, and again as well. As a unit she's stronger than Silgue...its just to bad about her personality. I feel like she's one of the very few things I don't like about the game.

While fantasy likes to portray archers as effeminate the truth historically was the exact opposite, archers were always the burliest, tallest, stockiest and most heavily muscled men in the army. For archers being big means you have more arm span and so can pull the bow back further and the maximum pull is dependent on your strength. Modern bows use technology to get high speed with relatively low pullback and have a parabolic tension which means it's easy to hold. Medieval bows didn't have this and it took a great deal of strength to hold a bow at draw. Arrows also are more accurate the faster they go and the heavier they are as they are less affected by wind and drag. A heavier arrow is also more stiff so won't bend as much in the air or deflect as easily.
When fighting in melee agility matters to quickly switch targets, avoid getting hit, move from place to place and also being small means you're a smaller target. Archers don't have to worry about any of these things as they usually have melee units in front of them to protect them. Also if your archers are bigger and stronger they can shoot further so enemy counter fire won't matter. The vast majority of archery training isn't actually shooting arrows but rather weight lifting.
Maybe Fire Emblem could take that into account. That there is a build stat like in Engage and that the accuracy of archers is their [strength+build]/2 and skill is only for crit rate. I think it would create and interesting choice as this creates a lot of overlap with armor knights. The fact that their roles are completely opposite could be interesting cause you have to let a stat go to waste regardless. That archers have high HP but low defense.

It makes sense that women wouldn't be Archers, those medieval Bows had extremely heavy draws unlike modern bows that even a woman could handle.

My idea is that they wanted to keep her a villager class, to avoid giving the impression of a "canon choice" for her promotion. Villager would be a sword user in Echoes, and I'm guessing they avoided that for the reasons you expressed. Besides, even if they don't use them as villagers in-game, you can hear Alm stating that they all have training in swords AND bows early in the game. At the entrance of Ram village, you can examine some arrows in the background that Alm would confirm are used by Tobin for training.
I agree with the diversity bit. Before Faye was added, there was only about 8 total archers compared to mages, healers, shurikens, etc. It'd be cool to have her as an archer though. I think it suits her.

I looked at the summoning chart until my eyes bled, tell me Lucky Crit what have I done wrong to deserve such treatment. I have been a faithful adherent of Silquen faith and cast away all thoughts of Mila, so why...why Nintendo?

I feel like Tobin should have been added as the archer in the banner. But today I found out that Tobin will be added as a Sword unit in the next Tempest Trial.

I play Sacred Echoes, a demake of FE15, and I can make Faye an archer, but I did not.
I'm still kinda disappointed that they didn't change existing units into axe-wielders.
