Follow Me: Lucky Crit
In today's episode we're analyzing two characters that the player must choose between during Celica's story in Fire Emblem Echoes Shadows of Valentia! These two characters, Deen and Sonya, were also present in Fire Emblem Gaiden, but unlike how it was in Gaiden, the choice between the two is definitely a lot harder to make this time around. Will you pick Deen, the upgraded Mercenary (Myrmidon) who comes equipped with a Brave Sword and some pretty great stat growths, or will you pick Sonya the mage with her Steel shield, great balanced growths and overall potential as being one of the best mages on Celica's route? Let's take a closer look.

others: actually look at and care about stats before deciding which character to recruit
me: g i r l h o t
Me was boy hot
I was: Hey I'd like to have another mage
*Goes to fight mage to recruit her*
Why did I get the mercenary?
*Some maps later*
I don't regret this mistake, it was destiny, Deen is cool
Me: g i r l a n d b o y h o t!
My biggest dilemma 😔
*This episode needs little bit of an update.* After the game launched we discovered that the Brave Sword actually does retain its original Gaiden effect, basically being like a Killing Edge. For some reason before the game came out I had been led to believe that it would be updated to the series' standard, however this was not the case. Also, Deen will drop his weapon upon his death, so either way you'll get his Brave Sword. will get both of the characters' weapons regardless of who you choose, since they will either come with the weapon or will drop it once you kill them on the battlefield. Make sure the one whose map you go to (to fight and kill them) IS NOT THE ONE YOU WANT. Thanks for watching, guys!
Sonya might be a hot witch, but Deen's redesign is god tier, I'm picking him
They both look great, so I have to bare minimum do two playthroughs ,:)
Lucky Crit yeah
ZRKyurem Deen looks like Jakob and orochi had a purple haired Dwyer
definitely picking deen at first
Deen is for edgelords.
This is something more serious than Choosing Starter in Pokemon
Thanks for the vids
Glad you like them, thanks so much for tuning in :)
Sonya is an interesting character since she's tied to a bunch of important major characters in the story plus her ending is very interesting plus she's a fantastic mage so I pick her easily! Also I'm excited for Celica in heroes I'll try to get her early if possible or when release fully she's one my favorite female lord to Lyn then Eirika
Kinu FoxySpirit I wonder what color she'll be( I hope green or red)
genobeamandflash92 Hopefully green
I have a feeling it was semi-confirmed in some accidental release that she'll be red.
I pulled her in the ongoing japanese Omikuji event on a red day, so I think she's going to be a red unit.
it's not really confirmed just leaked
Sonya always did seem like a more human version of a witch, but when I realized that she had rewarp and entrap, I had to stop and think about what she had done to become so powerful without giving her soul to Duma
That's a really great question!
skip to 2:13 to skip the ad
just fyi, brave sword in echoes isnt like fates brave sword. it acts how it is in gaiden
Oh man, you're absolutely right, they even kept its original Gaiden attributes! Yeesh. Missed that. Thanks for the heads up.
Lucky Crit no problem!
Thatguy Line In Gaiden and Echoes its a high crit weapon instead of a doubling weapon.
Thatguy Line Personally I go with Deen because hes a beast and my favoritr redesign, but Sonia will get work done
Bailey Fish It's more like the killing edge.
I don't think I could give you an unbiased answer on this.
Mangs if Sonya was blonde, I think you would pick her faster than Louise in your fe7 randomi...
Oh... wait...
I can, Dread fighter is best class :P
I really don't like when a game forces you to pick between 2 playable characters, I hated in other games and I hate it here. But between the two of them I like Deen best
Yeah, picking between anything is horrible. Especially in FE.
@@jhc1013 and sacrificing characters also sucks
Huh...you look exactly like your art work thats used in the videos. Don't know why I thought otherwise, but good to see that you stayed extremely faithful to your IRL "design"
Yeah I always found it really weird when people have cartoon versions of themselves that look nothing like them, so when I made this I stayed completely accurate :)
Just wait til Hidari does my redesign though, I'll look as badass as Deen >:)
Oh hi Lasl- I mean Inigo
I ultimately went with Deen and I'm glad I did. Sonya's skill set is nice but the late game is full of annoying dread fighters which she can't really do much against by herself, other than praying to milla that Excalibur crits. Meanwhile Deen can put them down solo with little fuss and being a dread fighter means he doesn't have to worry too much about being one shotted by most magic either.
It is kind of sad that it leaves poor Genny without any supports though.
Yeah the limited supports in this game are unfortunate :(
Yeah. Gunny drew the shortest straw in a batch where none of them were very long. It sucks for the people who only get one support. Most at least get two but not only does Genny only get one support but it's with Sonya who's an optional unit, meanwhile Deen only supports with Jesse who still gets a support with Saber.
I am having Deen in my second file. I do agree that Genny has no supports which is sad when you choose Deen.

Lucky Crit don't worry man
"Do you agree? Disagree?"
Highly disagree with the opinion that Sonia is even remotely as good as Deen in original Gaiden.
This isn't a close race, Deen absolutely demolishes Sonia. His bases are too good for her to compete with, and his class too good as well. In fact, even the "her stats will eventually get better than his isn't true(partly because her growths are too low to compete and her promotion bonuses don't really do anything to help her either). At Max Level, Sonia will most likely not even match a Level 10 promoted Max Level Deen, but just to make things worse if you are talking about maximum potential- Deen has the class that allows you to loop back to villager and then promote again.
She is one of the best available combat mages in Celica's route, that is true, but thats more to do with mages in general being underwhelming.
The issue is really that Dread Fighters are too good. Why bother with arguably the best mage(statwise) when you can grab a 4th Dread Fighter who will outclass her by far?
Deen being the worst Dread Fighter in Celica's route doesn't really matter when the worst Dread Fighter outclasses even the best of the mages.
Only Genny is really a better unit than Deen among the magic users, and that's because she's a healer with Physic, Invoke, and Dear.
Also, "Rewarp and Entrap aren't as good as Angel and Arrow"... The added utility absolutely means they are a strict buff.
Considering the only real reason Sonia was better than the other mages last time around was that none of them had speed to save their lives(nor could they grow it), now that they do she desperately needed some utility to actually compete.
Lucky Crit Literally one more day!!! Im hyped for the grind :). Luckily for me I at least played sacred stones and POR and RD to get a feel for the older styles but this shouldnt be a problem. Heard its just a long grind at first then it speeds up later and gets going.
Lucky Crit I would choose Deen
Sonya because she's the closest thing we can get to goth aesthetic.
I like how both of these characters have very purply palettes! They look great :)
How about shade
8:15 “Her other offensive spells still should be good enough though”
**misses attack**
My minds telling me Deen, BUT MY BODY! My body's telling me Sonya.
I didn’t know that you recruited the other so I ended up fighting Sonya and I got played
My body's telling me Deen
Sonya hot but Deen
God damn
@@nicholaszetterman565 me to 😥
They’re both great characters to recruit. I have Sonya in my first file and Deen in my second file.
I hate having to choose between units.
It pissed me off in Shadow Dragon and it sure pissed me off in Gaiden.
Shit.
It makes more of a reason to do two playthroughs. I think it's kinda fun.
Instead I would actually want to see a game with branching paths.
Not like Fates where you basically make one choice in the entire game, but a game where you progress through different outcomes depending not only on on-the-spot decisions, but also on the player's prowess and strategy during the gameplay segments itself, fulfilling secondary objectives, triggering event flags and the like.
But making me kill one potential ally just to get another kind of makes me feel like a dick, tbh
+StickFigure You probably would enjoy SMT: Devil Survivor series then. It got branching story routes and alternate scenario/battle depending which characters live and die.
Sol Luna Yeah but you literally had to be a douchebag and miss the time to save them which the game gives you plenty of.XD
I accidentally killed Sonya because I thought you had to go on her path to recruit her. I'm stuck with Deen now but he's cool I guess
Next time through just make sure to kill Deen, that's what will be fun though, now you can do two different playthroughs and make all the villagers different, too!
+blums Same thing happened to me, except I wanted to recruit Deen over Sonya. Which sucks because I don't plan on doing a second playthrough due to all the grinding you have to do.
I felt this and immediately felt horrible to the point I deleted my game files… I should’ve come here sooner ;;-,,
Mila’s statue advises that you must have an Archer and a Mage in your party. If you want to pick Sonya, make Atlas a Mercenary. If you want to pick Deen, make Atlas a Mage.
Both Character Portraits look amazing! God I love Hidari's work! Echoes....
It's so great, it makes the other style look fairly bland in my opinion x)
somehow have watched like 30 videos by you guys, but just realized that I still haven't subbed yet, I am now though. you guys are dope
Welcome aboard, really glad you enjoy the videos :)
Wish i could have them both. Dean looks badass, but I love the look of both of their growths. Very Oboro-esque, aka, almost impossible to be bad ever.
Deen. Sonia is better, and has more Story Relevance, but Deen is Freaking badass, and I'm choosing him instead of sonia. Why choose sonia, anyway? You already have the master of mages himself - BOEY.
Echoes
Lord Tullus 9 [Puffy Sprinkles] Deen redesign is best redesign.
A mage-branch or a mercenary-branch unit? Celica already gets a boatload of both in her route
Ok but Deen is significantly better than Sonia due to how Sonia never promotes, and even then Celica is the only relevant mage on her route after ch2
Wrong - Sonia, like every female mage, promotes at level 20. At least in Gaiden. Boey and/or may are slightly relevent in chapter 3, boey even more when you train him.
Lord Tullus 9 [Puffy Sprinkles] actually Male mages promote at level 12 and female mages promote at level 14
Deen looks edgy as fuck and I simply cannot resist picking him.
Sonya is the correct answer since she has a very wholesome support convo with Genny
It's definitely a consideration
In OG Gaiden, Sonya was probably the better choice. The only good Mages you had were Mae and Celica; Boey sucked ass. Sonya came in with pretty solid bases, growths and a very impressive spell list. Meanwhile for Mercenaries/Myrmidons, you had Saber, Kamui and Jesse, all three of which were decent. You didn't need a fourth one in the form of Deen. On top of that, beating Deen's group is way easier than beating Sonya's group.
However, since Boey has been buffed and Sonya has been _significantly_ nerfed, the choice is far more balanced.
I love how the villagers work, but I'm sad that there's no branching class changes. I used to love replaying just to see what it would be like for an axe wielder to go berserk instead of pirate, or whatever the options were. Also, I was sad to realize that axes weren't available to the player, meaning some of the sword users could have been axe users, but i understand that they wanted to be somewhat true to the original in some areas
Deen...
Because Dwyer
Drunk Lucario That Do Stupid Sh*t On The Internet He looks more like a certain outlaw.
He kinda looks like priam
Dia
I'm so glad I found this channel the day before the game is released.
I prefer Sonya because she's hot, but Deen is better because of two words "Dread Fighter".
Mega Koopa X The only class that doesn't faint at magic.
i made my atlas archer and DAMN he carried hard
Nice to hear! Glad he found a good spot in your lineup.
The first time I played SoV I (with much much effort) defeated Sonya. It was a tragedy, because I misunderstood the dynamic, and thought that I had to defeat Sonya to recruit her, and was so stupid as to save the game immediately after winning the battle. So, being the stubborn human I am, started the game from scratch and defeated Deen instead so I could finally recruit Sonya.
I'm in my first echoes playthrough and I decided to go with deen, because he looked cool. I'm nearing the end of chapter 4 and so far he is disgustingly good. He crits nearly every round of combat, and at least for me, has been getting some pretty good growths as well. probably my 2nd best merc after saber.
Sonya obviously, I mean... Woah.
also we have the same favorite FE, sacred Stones represent!
Don't you have the FE Heroes Lyn redesign for that?
I got Sonya for her supports with Genny. I mean like seriously, I dubbed Sonya "Team mom" in my playthrough
I chose Sonya in Gaiden and I didn't regret it. Looks like Deen's way better in Echoes especially his design. Hmmmmm... yeah, probably still choose Sonya xD
Deen was better in Gaiden too lol
I find it nice how you make an effort to respond to comments
I hate it when big youtubers don't even try. People took time out of their days to watch your content. It's the least you can do to at least have a conversation. Anyway, that's how we feel here so we'll always be doing our best to get to a lot of the comments!
I got a heart I feel special
5:10
In Gaiden and Echoes you don't have a magic stat so swords also boosts your magic. So the holy sword gives both +3 magic attack and passive heal.
Sonya learns Excalibur....so she's Sonya Blade confirmed
I just wanted to say thank you and good job in this video. I bought the game a few days ago, and tend to go into games like this blind as a bat, not really knowing or caring about growths and going off of what i feel like at the moment. When your villager video popped up in my recommendeds I was skeptic but curious, expecting a video stating what is the "absolute best" for each character purely based on stats. I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong.
Your videos are informative without being spoiler heavy, and you give facts and advice in an unbiased way. I'll be using the things i learned from you for my next, actually planned play through :)
Keep up the good work and thanks!
+Sacredangel Wow thank you for the compliments. I'm really glad you liked the videos and found them helpful. Thank you so much for tuning in and I'm also really glad you're enjoying Echoes. Stay tuned for more :)
no mater how much i'd like try out that app FE Heroes has taken up so much space that there's nothing left i could delete to make space for that..
Fire Emblem Heroes is a great game, but yeah it's definitely huge. No worries man :) (Are you team iPhone? They really screw everyone with those low storage models...)
Actually, the Brave Sword in SoV still gives Crit+30 rather than doubling the amount of attacks a unit does per round. Think that explains the higher than normal dislike ratio (as well as the Amino plug).
Yep, it was pointed out to me earlier. Unfortunately I didn't see the information about it retaining its Gaiden attributes... sorry about that :|
Thing is that in the original Gaiden, Deen was infinitely better. He had better bases, was only 5 levels from promotion to Dread Fighter and the swamps in chapter 4 hinder the usability of any mage to the point of redundant - not to mention Sonia only really had Excallibur and nothing else.
Fair point, and with the Dread fighter loop perhaps long-term he could be fine, but I'm not sure anyone actually cared enough to do that with him and train him back up. It's really always been a hard choice lol
Deen is even better now because Dread Fighters got that "Half damage from magic" skill which is even better than the higher res boost in the original AS WELL as the fact Dread Fighters now have 7 movement instead of 6. Meanwhile Sonia is stuck with 4 movement in Shrek Land, not to mention Mae is now good.
Picking either won't hurt you in the long run but Deen was and is, even moreso now, strictly better.
Alex huh true. Makes DFs even better then.
I just got Jesse and am spending time training him up, plus I want the story to be better on my first playthrough, so RIP Brave Sword. Sonja is gonna be great!
Edit: OMG HE DROPS THE BRAVE SWORD YES
I have to say the art in this game looks so good.
I only recently decided that I want to play Fire Emblem games more strategically and these videos are super helpful! Great vid :)
7:19 The Brave Sword doesn't have it's normal doubling attribute, it's still a Killing Edge. you must be thinking of Alm's Royal Sword skill Double Lion, and even with that, you can't attack 4 times
+Eric Hagar Unfortunately at the time I made this, the game wasn't out in America and based on the research I did it seemed that they had updated it, but alas I was wrong. Sorry about that!
I chose deem the first time having no idea the difference between the two by that I mean I didn’t know you could recruit Sonya but Sonya is superior by far!
Hot booby Mage vs. semi-cool dude but you also get a bunch of similar units of?
Not even a contest.
I'm playing Gaiden right now so when I play echoes, I'll see the differences. It's a fun game but man it's crazy how such a small change like this could affect gameplay!
It definitely is! Thanks for watching :)
Hey I just hit that subscribe button. I was introduced to you through Ghast and I'm loving your content.
Welcome aboard! Thanks so much for checking us out, and a big thanks to Ghast for having us on as a guest. We're really glad you're enjoying the videos :)
7:15 This right here.
Can someone check to see if this is true? I have the game, and it still has a similar description to what a killing edge would have, "a sword likely to crit". If I remember correctly, brave sword lets you attack twice consecutively, but even in the video by Linkmstr, you can see that the enemy retaliated before deen attacked a second time. I even went as far as to see the combat skills you can acquire from echoes' brave sword, but the 2 skills you'd get is flyer effectiveness and the ability to go past your opponent after battle.
Here's the brave sword's stats btw, or at least from the Japanese version
勇者の剣 (Brave sword)
必殺の出やすい剣 (A sword likely to crit)
威力 (power/strength) 5
命中 (accuracy) 90
必殺 (Crit) 30
射撃 (Range) 1
重さ (Weight) 0
Oh, and since the equipment both Deen and Sonya had are in Lime Green text (if you choose to fight one as a boss), you can technically get both equipment no matter which path you choose.
No the brave sword does the same thing as it did in gaiden
Which one is the more "canonical" option so to speak
Yeah that's Sonya because of her relationship to other characters in the story. Deen is kind of an outcast in that regard.
+LuckyCrit +namename Thanks
In some manga adaption of the original game, I think Deen takes a killing blow for Sonya.
I think I read it somewhere on the wiki.
Sonya is the one that has relations to the story especially if you fight Jedah.
I never played Gaiden before Echoes came out so when I got to that point, I thought that you had to fight whoever you wanted to keep. I wanted to use Sonya for my first playthrough (mainly because I remembered her from Heroes), so I fought her. I didn't realize that I'd actually get Deen because of it. Even then, I wasn't disappointed. Deen became my best Dread Fighter on Celica's route, and was about even with Grey, maybe even a bit better.
I was going to pick Sonya but I accidentally picked Deen by accident... but he was actually quite awesome and was a big help in my journey.
Next time around make sure to attack Deen so you can get Sonya! :)
2 minutes advertisement at the start without a skip button? wow thats some courage right there
Sorry about that, they required it for the sponsorship for this episode. I know it's not the way to go!
Nah dude its fine, i know how sponsorships can be. I personally don't have a huge problem with it, i just called it courageous because you were brave enough to do it even tho it could be annoying to some people. I hope that such peeps don't give you too much hate for that. And hey, showing off the funktions it has can be entertaining or interesting to some people :D
4:17 Your comments here imply that you only get the Brave Sword/Steel Shield if you recruit Deen/Sonia respectively.
lucky crit makes such great videos
i played through this game twice (i beat the boss 2 times in a week after release) and here are my results
Deen: in the final battle, i used only two people to beat the boss: Deem and Alm. the other characters i used for the other fools. Deen is a god. choose him.
Sonya: she died about 12 turns into the game. i thought that maybe Sonya can act like deem for fighting the boss, but i was wrong.
that is my opinion. i'm not saying you shouldn't choose Sonya, it's your choice, but i think that deem is better.
What's appened to deem after the game ? (I choose sonya)
I just realized that my "Low Sales, High Raves for Echoes" Amino post was on this video lmao
I went with Deen because he gets the Dreadfighter class, and adding a Brave Sword and "A" Rank with Jesse he can usually two shot anything that is not armored in one turn.
Nice vid dude I really enjoyed it
Ik im late and all but I figure I might as well state my opinion;
In echoes i honestly think you should choose sonya because as you stated, Atlas makes a terrific Mercenary, and with him that brings uou a total of 4 in celica's group, and you bassically have 3 mages before hand if you count celica which with recruiting sonya, not only gives you another amazing mage but balances out the Merc vs mage thing in celicas group
And another thing, though this may not be as important to some, while you can get the brave sword no matter who you choose, sonya doesnt drop her shield as an enemy, and by the time you recruit one of the two you'll be having enough trouble being able to give out swords to them all, especially since mae will be able to get a sword of her own if you so choose
I LIVE FOR YOUR COVER OF VALENTIA HONESTLY THE ONLY CHANNEL I TRUST
Ranged units will always be my first choice, especially if they target resistance. Chipping powerful enemy down without getting a counterattack before finishing them up makes some battle much easier. Especially entrap strata.
Deen is actually great. Sonya suffers from what every mage suffers from in Celica's route: they suck after chapter 2. If you use your forks like I did you can actually diversify Celica's lineup: use a fork to change either jesse or kamui a cav (you should upgrade them first for the speed bonus though) I chose jesse since he was gonna get benched for being behind if i didnt fork him. I use my second one on mae starting in chapter 3 to change her to a pegasus knight because her move sucks in the desert maps coming up and she will fall behind if you don't change her. I used the last for on lukas to make him a merc for alm's route since he doesn't have a lot. Sonya isnt that great since mages have very little move. Shes better than boey but thats not saying much since I insta bench him so he doesnt leech xp. Boots should probably go to celica because youre gonna use her so make sure she doesn't lag behind.
Sonya's vast pool of white and black magic compared to Deen's beefy stats will make her valuable for my Hard Mode playthrough. However, I intend to go after Deen first and make Atlas and eventually Kamui mages so I can get access to Rescue and Freeze respectively. In my second playthrough which will likely become my main file, I'll get Sonya (and turn Atlas into an archer) since I want to gain access to all of the spells in this file, which also involves turning Faye into a cleric.
On Alm's Route, Kliff is the best Mercenary in the game due to his 60% speed growth. You can give him the +3 speed fountain which will give you a speed value of 13 as a level 1 Mercenary allowing you to not get doubled by the Shielded Mercenary on Map 3. You could also choose to grind until Kliff has 13+ speed. In this case I recommend giving the +3 speed to Clive since he is the best user of the Riders Bane which gives +10 bonus damage versus Cavaliers. On Celica's Route you have Saber who requires 12 speed in order to double against the Shielded Mercenary. A big difference is if you choose to grind first until you get 12+ speed you can then +3 attack Saber instead while still doubling on this first fountain. A big difference between Kliff and Saber as a Mercenary with this build is Kliff gets the Lightning Sword which means you are doubling for 15 Magic Damage for the first part of the game.
i didn't know you could recruit either one so i ended up fighting Sonya...
Deen is amazing tho
I kind of regret getting Sonya in Gaiden, and for the unexpected reason being that the patch of my game would always crash the moment i wanted to use Excalibur. So, unfortunately that meant a lot of magic users ended up unusable as a result.
So many choices! Hm. I might choose Sonia the first time. I'm excited for Echoes!
Everyone that picks a character because they find them hot
Me: Lore is hot
really, dude? the first 2:00 of this 11 minute video was spent on an ad? you couldnt sum up what the ad does in 30 seconds?
Couple of queries:
- I can't find anything that states that the Brave Sword in Echoes has the standard Brave / 2x attack effect, and the clip you showed had Deen being counterattacked in between strikes. Source?
- The items carried in both Gaiden and Echoes are irrelevant to the choice as the one you kill drops their item for you and the one you spare joins with their item.
- Small thing, but iirc Sonya using swords is usually considered a bonus because the extra damage from carrying a sword is added to her magical damage rather than any potential she has as a physical unit
I killed Dean and gave his brave sword to Jesse
In my case, I was already more inclined to pick Sonya over Deen just because I prefer female units in general, but the clincher was hearing that Sonya is the only character who has support conversations with another character I insist on using.
i picked deen bc he's really hot and edgy ngl
I like his redesign, too!
I think Deen was fairly underrated in the original Gaiden purely because having tons of Dread Fighters was never bad. So I'll definitely be recruiting him first this time around as well. But I'll probably copy my save file to get both in a row, I'll just play the Deen file out first.
-you already have three goddamn swordfighters in Celica's party
-you still get the brave sword if you kill Deen
-Genny has no buildable supports if you don't get Sonya
-Sonya has plot relevance and an actual backstory whereas you learn basically nothing about Deen
-seriously why would anyone ever choose Deen over Sonya
Ember Hermin Ember Hermin Dread fighters are op, enough of them is never enough.
Dread fighter enemies are annoying, Deen destroys them easily, Sonya can't do jack shit against them.
The late game has a large amount of mages which Deen can easily dispatch.
Deen doubles everything under the sun and crits more often with his sword.
Deen doesn't have to worry about physical or magic attacks one shotting him as a dread fighter, without her shield Sonya struggles defensively and you may want to give her the Mage ring.
Deen can abuse the villager loop guaranteeing he will cap most of his stats.
A single conversation against Jedah isn't what I'd call story importance. It's more than Deen gets but in the end both of them are just kind of there. Actions speak louder than words, there's a difference between being told someone is important and them actually doing something important.
Some people maybe like the air of mystery Deen gives off, because we know little about him it's up to speculation. Though I'll admit it would be nice to have something to go off of and Genny really should have gotten more than one support.
If you don’t want another sword fighter, use the golden apple and exp springs to get him to a lvl 10 dread fighter, turn him into a villager, and then a mage, he makes a pretty great one
Probably will pick Sonia for my first run then Deen the second if only bc of the sheer volume of potential mercs in celicas route and the fact that mages are the best class hands down
I honestly don't get why people bitch about the ad opening? like it's a utube vid there's an option to skip ahead if ya don't want to watch it and at least it's less annoying than utubes regular ads (if you don't have adblock or are watching on mobile (like me) you probably know which ones I'm talking about)
But I digress, this was a good vid that covered all that we as future players will need to know and I appreciate that my dude hope you have a good day with less uploading issues in the future
Sacred stones is my favorite fire emblem :D I've been enjoying Echoes so much because of how much it reminds me of The two stories from Sacred Stones.
PSA: The Brave Sword is actually just a Killing Edge: it has ~5 Mt (I can't remember), and it has about a 30% crit rate.
Yep, someone else just made me realize that in another comment, for some reason the research I did led me to believe they'd updated the Brave Sword to the series standard, but nope, looks like another thing they stayed faithful with. Sorry about that!
No worries! I only made the comment just to let other players know, so they could have better judgement with choosing the character they want.
Deen often gets alot criticism for being yet another dread fighter but think about it, the second half of Celicas' rout is full of enemy mages and stages with mud that limits your movement. A bunch of dread fighters that can tank magic and traverse the mud is a better option to me than another mage that's just there to pick off the the monsters cantors summon.
I'm not sure if this will be my first or second run through the game, but I do have a bit of an interesting plan for this. I'll pick Dean on a route where I make Atlas a mercenary. But, I'll use the villager's fork DLC item to reclass Jesse to an archer. Since there's a rather small amount of archers in the game, it felt like a nice choice to go for. Plus, Jesse's growths feel like they'll compliment a ranged class like that a bit more, with his high luck helping for accuracy, and his lower strength being less of a problem.
You get like, a thousand mages on Celica's route, just choose Deen.
Referring to Echoes here. Every time I try to use Sonya she requires me feeding kills into her, especially since her promotion comes at level 14 compared to Deen’s level 10 promotion. Furthermore, she’s always been a very meh unit for me. Anything she could do, Boey or Mae could do better (let’s have em sing on it). Deen is just more convenient for me.
Also his victory animation is badass.
I choose Sonya because I didn't realize you get to recruit the one you don't fight. So I went to go fight Sonya, saw all the witches, said screw that and then fought Deen.
So all I gotta do to get Sonya is to beat Deen? Welp. Deen's goin' down!
I was going to choose either one of them based on how my party was doing but seeing that Sonya gets freaking Rewarp AND Entrap has solidified my choice. I'm just gonna use her for support unless Mae and Boey really get screwed but it's not like that's as big of a problem as in other games due to how promotions work.
Awesome video, I'm really liking your Echoes videos. I'm picking Deen, by the by. I do just want to say though, I looked through some info and I didn't find anything about the Hero Sword having any Brave Effect, but it does have an anti-flier skill. Also, one thing I found helpful is that, with minimal grinding, Deen is pretty much on-par or only slightly behind the team in terms of level, while Sonia seems pretty far behind and her high level of promotion doesn't help her, just a quick bit of two cents.
Personally there’s no right answer who to choose. I am choosing both characters in two separate files. On my first file, I choose Sonya, because she has relations in the story as well as the only support for Genny. Deen is good as well. He’s good and very balanced. He doesn’t have any story plot, but he does have a support with Jesse.
I don't know if this is mentioned in the video, but to recruit one, you must fight the other.. so if you want Sonya, you have to fight and kill Deen. I didn't know this and ended up with Deen.. blughh
Currently on my second run. In my first i actually wanted deen but i thought you were meant to fight the one you wanted, but choosing deen on second time, i can safely say that sonya much better imo, and plus, i find her character to be better and has a small bit of story relevance.
Lol i picked deen. Can't actually remember why, probably was just like "sword guy better"
I liked his edgyness
Cathal Barton yeah probably thought the same
I would've been fine with either unit but playing on hard classic first run, I didn't exactly feel like going through a level where I had limited movement while witches who could teleport almost freely (unless you know how to abuse their AI) could attack my units for potentially easy kills
They should release both holy war and thracia 776 at the same time and make thracia a DLC extra route to holy war just like how fates had DLC routes. Thracia was kinda like a DLC anyway, but SNES didn't have wifi back then
I got to use Both in Echoes I think Sonya is better
Deen is better statistically but the thing is you already have 3 DFS that are more or less the same unit and you can make Atlas a Merc who is basically Deen but stronger
Sonya A mage with Excalibur at base while Celica and Boey take WAY Too long to learn it and Nomah is hands down the worse unit in the game
not that Deen is bad in fact He's better statistically but the thing is I can achieve the same results with Saber Kamui Jesse and Atlas, Celica is really the only unit who can use Excalibur and she takes WAY TOO Long to learn it Boey could too but he's not the best unit and then there is the worse unit in the game(Nomah) also Greith's hellhole of a map basically requires you to have at least one DF so Deen's main appeal of being a low investment alternative to every DF but Saber kinda loses it's point also I find mages to be behind archers for the most dominant class due to the lack of res on enemies you really only need one dread to deal with most cantors and they're pretty much interchangeable plus you get the brave sword earlier if you get Sonya also without the DF Loop the only class Atlas can really shine in is Merc (he can as an Archer but he will be TERRIBLE before becoming a Bow Knight) it's not that Deen is bad but you'll get more use out of Sonya than Deen also one more thing Boey and Mae are much more prone to RNG Screwage than Kamui Saber and Jesse who all are pretty much good enough with DF Promo gains alone(I've had Mae get RNG Screwed on my current run she has 8 speed at level 10) this is an interesting Arran and Samson and not NEARLY As one sided as Johalva V Johan in FE4 Seluf/Almada V Miranda/that Paladin guy I forgot and Ced V Cyass from FE5 it's telling I consider Cyas to be the worse unit in FE5 for the fact they thought making a crappy staff bot versus an Overpowered as hell mage that can do the same things that he can do with staffs with an overpowered as hell tome was a good idea alone, Echidna V Bartre from FE6(Though on HM I may get Bartre cause F--K THE MAP YOU GET ECHIDNA) Wallace V Gietz and Harken V Karel from FE7
Alright, what the fuck. The thumbnail for the Echoes Villagers Guide just has the EXACT same classes I gave to the respective units. Atlas as a Gold Knight is a monster...
Finished the game last month before the japanese release since it got leaked. Kliff with a bonus range ring as a mage literally carried me the whole game lol.
I chose Sonya and she ended up being a burden through the rest of Celica's path due to getting her that late.
Well, actually, Sonya might be more redundant than Deen. You already have Saber, Kamui and Jesse (who starts pretty weak) before Deen, and no other merc after in Celica's path. Celica, Mae and Boey joins before Sonya (so the same as Deen), but Nomah joins after, making Sonya actually more redundant. Some may use the "Female mage and Male Mage are really different!" argument, but in a vacuum, they are mostly the same, with an added sword for priestess.
Sonya can't be more redundant than herself. That's physically impossible.
I meant Deen, my brain paused.
