Hey folks, save your money and don’t buy a Gen4 SSD. The secondary NVME controller only supports Gen3 speeds so you won’t be getting the 6000mb/s reads
This is correct. When I bought mine this one was actually on sale and cheaper.
Is there a reason behind this? Could you potentially swap a Gen4 into the primary controller? Thanks!
@@nicholasmalone607 Dell claims the primary controller supports gen4 and secondary controller supports gen3 but myself and many others have tried to plug gen4 ssd into the primary controller and installed a new OS to only find it negotiating at gen3 and performing at gen3 speeds. Dell claims they don't support 3rd party hardware and blame it on that as the problem.

So I might as well buy a Gen3? Is there any quality difference in a Gen3 and the Gen4 he installed in the video? All I'm looking for is editing videos and maybe playing some games. I'm not gonna mess with it a lot and get some crazy OS or something.

You have not tested the SSD speed after installation. Unfortunately Dell G15 5511, solid-state drive 2 slot supports PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe performance only witch around 3500 MB/s max.

I was thinking of just grabbing my SSD from my old 2019 Acer Spin 3 laptop and sticking it into the second SSD slot to add another 512GB of internal storage. Would this work? or would there be compatibility issues?

Does Crucial normally not include a mounting bracket with their ssd drives. Mine was a 1 Tb drive and it came with a screw but no mount.

I don't know if it does or not. I don't assume it would. Generally speaking I don't use warranties, especially if it involves returning the item and getting a refurbished unit. If you are worried about the warranty I suggest contacting Dell and asking the question.

I believe it goes on the "top" (actually bottom) when the cover is off so I think you could add it after the fact without removing it. The original (in slot 1) has it in this position if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, I wanted to use a heatsink but I bought the wrong size. If you got it use it. Mine has been fine without but I did intend to use one. It can only help, not hurt.

Is a copper heat sink needed? If so, is it safe to just get one off amazon or is there a certain place I should get one? Is the full size heat sink needed or could I use a half sized heat sink?
Mine is performing just fine without. But I am not a gamer. I purchased this laptop for editing videos. I would error to the side of caution and recommend installing one. I would also go with the full size as I'm sure the difference in cost is negligible

It's a good practice. People have reported that they have done it without. Any sparks can be catastrophic for electronics, this is why I remove all power sources when working on.

I use my dell g15 for 3d rendering, gaming and video editing purposes. Is P5 Plus perfect for those purposes. If not suggest me a better option. Also....Is heatsink necessary?

No, no reset needed. Just follow this guide
One small hiccup for me, when going to disk management there was a pop-up that prompted me to select whether it was a bootable or backup hdd. After selecting that everything else was spot-on.

I just ordered a Gen4 SSD for mine and here's what I want to do: Ideally, I'd like to close my existing SSD to the Gen4. Then put the Gen4 in slot 1, move the existing SSD to slot 2, erase it and just have it as more storage space. Is it possible to do that?

Dell G15 is cheap af on the inside; It will run at gen3 speeds or not at all.

Well... P5 plus is a really performant SSD. But it's a very poor choice for this PC. It's PCIe Gen4, while G15 motherboard is only PCIe Gen 3. Meaning the performance of this SSD will be limited to Gen 3. Regular Gen 3 P5 would have been a wiser option considering its very good performance.

Yes, so long as you have the second slot you can add it as the video shows. You will need the mount. I am running mine without the heatsink with no problems. Links to the items are in the description of the video

I guess it might work without... but I think it would be wise to have it to make sure both it doesn't pop out of the slot and doesn't run risk of shorting out to anything.

How are the temperatures without the heat sync?
My cheaper P2 SSD (without heat sync) reached 59c after completing the crystaldiskmark tests - actually lower than the factory fitted samsung ssd with heatsync (63c).
I would've added a ssd to keep it running fast

is it fine if the heatsink is sticking to the ssd? I took off the sticker from the bottom of the heatsink and now it's sticking on the SSD. Is that fine?

Hello mate, i have installed the same ssd p3 plus 1 tb to slot 2 i know it is a gen 4 ssd and the laptop only supports gen 3 ssd but i am not even getting gen 3 speed. i have check it with crystalmark it shows the range between 700-900 mb/s read speed.

@@The.Odyssey Dell have the manual on their web site which shows in great detail how you can replace all sorts of things inside the laptop. Sadly whilst my new 12700H powered 5521 is a brilliant laptop, they have removed the actual slot, copper traces are there but no slot. I believe the lower powered ones do have it but not top of the range like mine which would point to possible thermal issues when prototyping.

You already have one on the left, you can upgrade that as well but keep in mind that the one in there houses everything that is on your computer now so you will need to clone the drive to keep everything you currently have.

Personally I wouldn't do it without a mount. But others have commented that they have and it's working fine. I don't claim to be an expert on what will work with any given m2 and computer. This is why I choose to buy parts that a manufacturer guarantees will work with my system. I had some RAM burn me on that and I learned my lesson quick.
Do you get Gen 4 speed on the 2nd slot? I heard that 2nd slot is maxed at Gen 3 speed so getting Gen 4 SSD won't be beneficial.
That is correct, I was unaware but another youtube user told me. The p5plus was on sale though and cheaper than the p5 when I purchased.
So what you trying to say is that slot 1 supports gen 4 and 2nd slot support uptill gen3. Is that what you meant ?

Are you adding an internal or replacing the existing internal? I only added one to mine so there was no need to transfer data.

Yes, there is a second slot. At least there was in mine. Someone on here said a store told them there wasn't a second slot in theirs so I don't know if that is the case with all of them.

If you are adding one then no you don't have to install windows. I would imagine if you are replacing you could copy the image of the original hard drive to the new one with a hard drive duplicator. I believe I have done that in the past but it's been a while. I'm sure you can find out with a little research.
I also own a 256 model, but I actually opened mine up recently and it does indeed have the 2nd SSD slot there, along with the stuff for the mounting bracket and heat sink.

Yes, it increases available ROM memory which is your storage. I did this because I edit these videos so I store many files on it. There was a 2TB drive and it's half full right now because I have trouble letting go of things lol. I'm considering transferring to SD cards to back up the footage that I'm done editing in case I ever want to come back to it.

Slot 2 only supports Gen 3.0 x4 only. So, isn't Crucial P3 2TB PCIe M.2 2280 SSD a safer option?
Correct, slot 2 only supports gen 3. Gen 4 will run with no issues. It was on sale and cheaper than the gen 3 when I bought it.
