    I feel this is just a minor inconvenience, a far bigger annoyance is that the mainboard is inverted so in order to change the thermal paste after some years you have to take apart the entire machine.

    For anyone wondering these parts are provided for free if you have premium support. MHKK8 = SSD assembly bracket (m15 R5) 26X1Y = 2280 SSD assembly bracket (m15 R5/Inspiron G15 5510/Inspiron G15 5515) - These two parts number are for the bracket and shield.

      Hi,
      I am going to place an order the M15R5 with 256GB SSD, as I already have a 1TB M.2 NVME 2280 SSD with me (in my old lenovo laptop).
      I am planning to move the 256GB in the second slot, and use my 1TB in the first slot.
      I get my dell products through a purchase order, so I can ask for parts in my initial quote itself.
      What parts should I request? 1x MHKK8 and 1x 26X1Y? What about screws? How many of the 'mounting posts' do I need for my process?
      Please confirm, your help is much appreciated! Thanks

      Dell has always been semi-proprietary. About ten years ago I had to change a hard drive on a consumer-grade desktop by Dell. It took an Angle grinder, Tin Snips, and a drill to remove the welded cage around the drive. Once we got the drive out, we discovered it Was a Seagate but a custom model. We tried putting another Seagate of the same capacity in and It wouldn't recognize the drive. We ended up scrapping another identical machine with a cracked MB. We put the harvested drive into the first machine and boom it worked perfectly. I recommended she buy another computer that was so cheap and low end. I like the chance to bill an extra two hours to fix what should have been a 20 minute replace and image!

    Ok I have run through the entire tech support experience for you. Part numbers below.
    A) disclaimer: I have the premium tech support with battery replacement.
    I called dell and spoke with support. I explained I was trying to add a 2280 m.2 drive. They had me email pictures after answering some questions they escalated it to the next level. I was asked to confirm what I was doing and that I was comfortable replacing my own parts. They then shipped the parts to me free of charge.
    The parts are as follows.
    MHKK8 asst brkt SSD change ark (this is the part number and title for the adapter that slots in so you can screw mount the SSD.
    26X1Y assy brkt SSD thrm 2280 sif this is the copper heat spreader and thermal pad that helps cool the SSD.

      @@MashITTech This is why I pointed out I have premium support.
      I have found that premium support saves hours of time on the phone and as a bonus at the end of the life cycle I get all the blemished cosmetic parts replaced and a new battery this means I can get top dollar resale value, which usually covers the cost of the premium support.

      I have the G15 5510, it arrived a week ago...no 2nd bracket. I contacted Dell support, looking for a hookup or at least a price on the parts you listed. $99.00 plush shipping I was quoted, which I think is ridiculous for 3 small bits that likely cost $2.00 to make.
      Premium support was probably worth it if they sent this kit for free (well no additional charge).

    My m15 R6 doesn't come with the secondary SSD mounts either. When I contacted support through online chat and said "I'm trying to install another SSD and find something missing there", the agent placed an order right after my message. Two days later, I received a package including SSD tray, heatsink and screws. Free and ease on all the process. From the massive complaints on m15 R5, I guess you should have to go for Intel version with Dell as they have been the biggest client of Intel sales for years, lol.
    Need to notice that the SSD tray of G15 is different from that of m15.

      @@MashITTech I can confirm that the part mentioned by @d1skreet works! It was a one day turn-around from Amazon. I installed it today. It's a little tricky to install because the part is so small and the "wings" on either side have to slide under the installed metal bracket with the screw mount side facing away from the SSD slot. It took a very slight amount of pressure with a small screwdriver to push the "wings" under the bracket on either side. I was then able to slide it completely under where it snaps into place. The rest was easy. The part from Amazon comes with 2 screws (you just need one).
      I also bought a generic M.2 heat shield kit from Amazon (it's the first one that comes up in a search). It fit perfectly. I tightened the screw and everything is secure now. Thanks to @d1skreet for finding the part!

    Thanks Dave for sharing this vital info. I recently ordered a G15 thinking to add a second SSD should be a walk around the park - really glad I found your clip. BTW did any of the plastic tabs break off or get damaged when removing the cover? I read in a review it's on quite tight, which often leads to broken mounting tabs/clips by my experience. I ask because I'm fussy about that - I don't like to cause damage to any part of the machine everytime I want to access its components.

Also: Using a hair dryer to warm up the plastic edges (not excessively of course) before prying seems to allow the clips to come off easier. All the best.

    The other option is to replace the stock 2280 SSD with an 2 TB 2280 SSD. Also not the best option.
    Is there an option I dont get?
    Thanks :-)

      The good news is both slots can be 2030 or 2080, I will make a quick video showing you how to change them. If you get the 1tb I am pretty sure you will get an 80mm as there is very few 1tb 30mm. We think we have found the adapter for the second slot on Amazon, as soon as it arrives as we test it I will let everyone know 👍

The other thing is the USB-C Displayport connection and to compability to a high Res and High refreshrate screen :-/ In my special case 5.120x1.440 at 240Hz (144Hz will be okay for me) with G-Sync and HDR1.000. It's not really a big problem. You just need to choose a configuration where all the ssd slots are filled. Then you will have all the fixtures and radiators. After that, you can install your own ssd and sell the standard ones, that's all.

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  3 года назад +1

      Whilst you are totally correct don’t you think it is a bit mean not to include a cheap adapter on a £1500+ laptop

    • @abrownkc
      @abrownkc 3 года назад

      Two issues with that: First, you'd be paying inflated prices for SSDs from Dell that you'd never make up when reselling, so you could easily wind up effectively paying $50-100 for the brackets when all was said and done. That is all academic however because none of the configurations currently on Dell's (US, not sure about others) web site offer you the ability to add a second SSD from the factory.

      @@MashITTech I bought mine from the dell outlet for $1000 out the door with tax and free shipping and with an i7 and 16gb ram and 3060 worth every penny, I have got a SN550 for the secondary drive, and a kit of Team 32gb ddr4 3200mhz ram for it. So for less than $1100 I have a really killer laptop. Getting something with a 3070 and the specs i need would have been $1800. So in my opinion since the speed difference is like 10% on a 3070 you should either just get a 3060 or a 3080 because the 3070 is horrible value for the investment.
