  • I get a lot of questions on what you can upgrade after purchasing the Dell G15 so I answer those questions in this video. Also a quick guide on how to open the chassis.
    Here is a link to (potentionally) compatible RAM:
    amzn.to/3TngzFh
    Make sure to read reviews to see if the RAM really runs are 3200mhz out of the box.
    Recommended SSD: (SK Hynix are highly rated with low power and heat)
    amzn.to/3MqaG84
    For the M.2 NVME mount I used you can find it here:
    amzn.to/3fXzatf
    or search for part PXNWV.
    This link should be the real bracket, but I haven't tested it:
    amzn.to/3rFhkh9
    Amazon links are affiliate links so thanks for clicking!

    I have had this laptop for a bit now and I'm looking to get some more storage for it, I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to computers so I'm curious if I would have to do any sort of data transfer in order to upgrade the storage or if I can just replace the stick with no problems. In the past I added a second stick of ram, but that didn't require me to replace anything. Thanks!

    • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  Месяц назад

      If you’re adding the storage to the second slot you don’t have to do any data transfer. It’ll show up as a second drive (usually D:) in Windows. If you want to replace the drive in the original slot or want to use the new drive as the main Windows drive you’ll need to do a data transfer. Most new name brand SSDs will let you download their data transfer app for free and run you through the process if that’s what you want to do.

    Thank you for the Storage Options discussion. I have a Dell G15- 5515 and since it came with a 256GB drive, I've been meaning to upgrade or add a second drive.
    •I didn't know the Dell G15 only benefits up to Gen 3 and PS5s only takes Gen 4 and above. Thank you for the clarification.
    •I was told that all SSDs have to use a heat-sink (especially if they're being used to play games). I'll keep your advice in mind, but I still want to use one with a heat sink. Preferably a Gen 3 on the Right side (since I only have the initial SDD on the Left Side).
    With all of that to consider, which models do you recommend I should buy? I haven't seen many M.2 SSDs available through Dell directly (that are still in stock). I live in Canada, but if you know a model or brand, I'll look them up.

    • @Loaded0

      Samsung and SK Hynix brand have been reviewed very well for laptops due to their low heat and lower power consumption compared to other brands. I’m sure there will be many deals this holiday season for them.
      I’m currently using no heat sinks in both my drives. I replaced the original SSD (it was a 2230 size perfect for the Steam Deck) and haven’t noticed performance problems. I only put games on the second drive though.

      @@Loaded0 Thanks for all the suggestion. I've decided to go with the Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB M.2 NVMe Internal Solid State Drive (MZ-V7S2T0B/AM for ($199 Canadian Dollar at $85 off). Its 3rd gen and its dimensions are 80.15 x 22.15 x 2.38 (mm) (M.2 2280 on Dell's Store). According to the G15 specifications on the Dell website, it can fit the 2230 or 2280 size, so that works. I was also tempted by the 980 PRO, since its a 2280 size, but you said this laptop would see no difference or additional benefits above 3rd gen. Thanks again for the advice. • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  Год назад +1

      It’s not a specific 2280 size for the bracket. You move it around depending on whether the m.2 is 2230 size or 2280 size. It’s also specific to many Dell laptops but not other brands. Nothing will be holding the SSD in place so you kind of need one to keep it secure, but you can probably use something else to hold it in place too.

    • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  5 месяцев назад

      It will work fine, but you might not get the rated speed. I don’t think the 5511 model has support for XMP to change the RAM speed and I’ve noticed most of them will run at 2666 mhz instead.

    • @V7979
      @V7979 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Loaded0 alright. Last important thing, I saw that even if we put 3200 MHz 1.2 V ram in G15, it won't run at full speed. It will run at 2667 MHz like you mentioned. Whats the reason behind this? Since Dell doesn't support XMP so I won't be able to overclock it. I have stock 8GB stick which runs at 3200 MHz but if I install a new one, it won't get that speed. Just want to know reason for this

    • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  5 месяцев назад

      It could be a few reasons. Often RAM makers will advertise 3200mhz, but some will only work with overclocking at that speed so what you need to look for is a JEDEC rating of 3200mhz in the ram specs. Most laptops don’t support overclocking so people will usually write reviews on whether it worked at the full speed for them if you can’t find spec sheets.
      Also if you’re mixing stock ram with one you bought it might default to a slower speed because of timing differences. It’s best to get a kit with the same ram for compatibility.

      Gen 3 is getting cheaper these days and it’s the fastest it supports so go for that. The SK Hynix or Samsung brands are highly rated for good speed, temperature, and power consumption.

    • @Loaded0

      There isn’t a way to change the ram speed so you have to get ram that runs at 3200mhz by default which is the fastest it supports. Unfortunately that means you’ll have the check spec sheets or make sure to read user reviews for the ram to verify that it does.

      If the captive screws turn easily and you removed all the other screws it should just pull off pretty easily. It’s pretty flexible plastic so maybe pull up the edges a little at a time to see which screw might be keeping it down.

      @@Loaded0 Thanks for Reply in my country the bracket price is touching the SSD price plus it takes 20 days as it will import from US

      Yeah it was pretty hard to find here too in the beginning. You can upgrade your storage still but you’ll have to change out the SSD and use the existing bracket.

    I put in it an ADATA SSD XPG GAMMIX S11 PRO 1TB M.2 PCIe GEN3x4 2280, in this way, I have all the speed declared, instead of losing it, with one of GEN4x4, it would not be worth it!

    • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, price wise much better to get a gen 3. All SSDs have a limited life too so no reason to get a faster one for future compatibility either.

    for those who are going to upgrade ssd let me tell you one thing the second slot just doesnt work. I installed an legend 840 and it was picking up without the factory ssd. according to dell "You cannot install another ssd if your laptop comes with one."

      I have heard that newer G15 models don’t come with a second slot, but it’s the first time I’ve heard that they limit the usage of two drives somehow when they have two slots available. I hope you find a workaround. The customer service is often not very helpful with upgrading hardware.

      Not my version, but the newer ones do. The versions with 12th gen Intel or 6000 series Ryzen processors support DDR5.

      I didn’t have to. Just pointing out that you can. This wifi it comes with is reviewed to be one if the best actually.

      Nice, that’s fast! I’m surprised they went with one slot with the newer ones. Probably a cost cutting things. If you don’t have much data to save try doing a fresh install of Windows instead of cloning. It’ll take longer but Windows feels so fast when you’re done.

    Think you can run 3600mhz on the AMD . 3200mhz is for the Intel version

    • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  Год назад

      You probably can as long as it’s DDR4, but even with 3200mhz it was difficult to find RAM that runs at that full speed. There’s even less 3600mhz RAM available so it’ll take some testing to see which ones run at that speed out of the box.

      @@Loaded0 I have the same laptop or similar. G15 AMD 5600 RTX 3050 but its going at 3600mhz. thinking it would be better with less mhz. Don't know much about that part.

    • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  Год назад

      Faster is better so I would stick with the 3600mhz. Most of the laptops around the time I got mine only had 3200mhz available so that’s what you’ll see for most reviews. Then DDR5 and new chips came out so there was no reason for 3600mhz DDR4.

      Yeah, someone mentioned that before too. Probably cost saving measure. At least nvme drives are available with more storage now (I’ve seen up to 4TB) so having one slot isn’t as bad.

      That’s weird. Same model but just newer? Is it the same for both slots too? The 2280 size is the most popular so it doesn’t make sense that they only allow the 2230 size.
