    I have the same model, except with the 1050TI video card. I had to replace the memory, the keyboard and power supply in its second year (out of warranty) and so when the battery life dropped to 5 minutes I thought enough with all this and bought a new laptop. Sadly the new laptop only lasted 16 months (Asus not so tuf) so I came back to the G5 again. I had to replace the battery to use it for work, as we often get power outages, and am now thinking about upgrading memory and the 128GB C drive, as most of the cheap laptops have far worse video performance and not much better CPU than this one.
    Anyway, thanks for the video guide, it looks much easier than I imagined.

    Just got it used for $250 and it came with an i7 8750H, GTX 1050Ti, 8GB RAM single channel, 128GB Sata SSD M2. I upgraded to dual channel 16GB RAM and I have a 1TB Samsung 980 NVME SSD that I'm about to put windows 10 on.

    I have a 1TB M.2 as my C drive. I’ve also swapped the HDD for a SSD however windows does not recognize the SSD, is there a reason for this?

    does your laptop come with fingerprint on power button? mine have same model but doesn't come with fingerprint and i am thinking to purchase the module fingerprint board and add it myself. What do you think? i need to know first the model of fingerprint module board.

    My Dell G5 1587 came with a 256Gb 2230 SSD which had a copper mounting plate that I suppose is also being used as a heat sink. Unfortunately that plate can not be used with the full length 2280 replacement SSD. What do you recommend for a heat sink for the 2280 NVME?

    I got this laptop a few years ago, like 4-6 years ago. Back when I got it, it use to run super smoothly with almost no issues present period. But even though it ran super well, one day it got a bluescreen and since that day, it has never ran the same. I don't know what's wrong with it, I've done so many tweaks trying to fix it and I have never accomplished anything with it. It honestly runs like a piece of crap even though it has a super nice setup to it. This huge drop in performance only comes with gaming, it runs well doing anything else.

    • @SonosVitae
      @SonosVitae Год назад

      same. but the fix for me was Reinstalling Windows Entirely, Graphic Card Issues and HDD drive Failure. so yea. Don't Update drivers if everything works, just leave them be.

      I had the issue of it running super slow, I took the thing apart and replaced the thermal paste, runs like a brand new computer. Mine would do the same thing, fine til i gamed and then it would crap the bed. I think if you replace the thermal paste you would be surprised!

    You ask about possible upgrades. How about a back-lit keyboard, pending the motherboard has the connector for it. Dell is good about having that option available. For less than $25 it is a nice feature. I have added it to several dell laptops.

    Thanks for this amazing video. Can I take the 2x16gb ram of "G.Skill Ripjaws SO-DIMM Series 16GB" and replace it with the existing ones that are 2x8gb ram? or do you have brand recommendation to make my computer 32 gm ram

    Im looking to overhual mine right now. And was wonder if it would be ok to run 1tb ssd like the one in this video, and replace the hdd with a 2tb sata ssd and swap the memory to 2x 16gb 2666? The laptop is used 90% of the time for gaming and maybe 10% for video editing and 3d modeling cars, race tracks and stuff for 3d printing. 1 game in particular i play is a bit too heavy on memory and doesnt like mechanical drives. (Boot up warns me before playing that I'll get performance drops from it) and my other main game i had to move to an external hard drive temporarily as the file size is now 1.2tb 😅

    Can this Dell take 2 * 16GB RAM? I'm swapping my M.2 disk for a Samsung NVME (SSD980) and if it runs smoothly (and faster) then I plan to change the HDD to an SSD and if possible I'd like to swap my 2 * 8GB to 2 * 16. It runs OK on 16GB RAM most of the time but I have a second monitor that I'm running at UHD and the machine runs out of overhead. I think some breathing room on the NVME will help (fast and large swap drives) but I'd like to get more RAM as long as I plan on using this machine daily for a few more years.

      Yes, according to Dell’s spec sheet, the 5587 will accept up to 2 modules of 16gb 2666Mhz ram, totaling 32gb. Thanks for watching!

    Hi, I've acquired this laptop from a second market. For my surprise the BIOS version is 1.3.0. Do you suggest to upgrade it to the last from 2022?

    • @FamilyGeekery

      It’s almost always a good idea to keep your bios updated to the latest.

    Hey! I have the same laptop with an i7 8750H. Just upgraded both m.2 and sata to SSDs and bought a new battery for it bc the original one lasts half as it should and is starting to puff. A couple years ago I also did a keyboard replacement bc some keys stopped working (seemed to be a dell issue), but it's all good now
    I was thinking if I should do any driver update though: there's no support for this anymore, so would it be worth it to risk to update the bios or other stuff?

    • @FamilyGeekery
      @FamilyGeekery  Месяц назад +1

      I would think it would be safe to update to whatever the latest drivers on Dell’s website are.

    • @FamilyGeekery
      @FamilyGeekery  Год назад

      You can either back up your existing drive beforehand (using Time Machine), or you can use a usb/sata adapter afterwards and copy the files to your new drive (as long as your drive wasn’t encrypted)

    Is there any way to upgrade its graphics card? I’m considering just buying a new desktop with some of the latest specs in it, but people are telling me I should see if I can upgrade my laptop (the one you are working on) before I lay $1000+ on a desktop.

    • @FamilyGeekery

      You could use a eGPU, but you probably can’t upgrade the internal gpu.

    • @FamilyGeekery
      @FamilyGeekery  Год назад

      Yes, you will have more overall system memory, but your dual channel memory will still be 16gb. Overall its still worth it if it doesn't cost you much, or you already have the other memory laying around.
