  • In this video, we're going to be talking about some of the most common mistakes that people make when installing a NVMe SSD, and how to avoid them. We're also going to be going over some of the best ways to measure the performance of a NVMe SSD, and dispel some of the myths about NVMe PCIe speeds.
If you're looking to install a NVMe SSD in your computer, then this video is for you! We'll cover everything from the basics of NVMe SSDs to the best way to install them. We'll also discuss some of the key factors to consider when choosing a NVMe SSD, and how to measure their performance.
The process for installing is really easy but may vary depending on your motherboard - some have heatsinks and different screw setups. It's also worth checking your manual as you may find that not all the drives work the same way.
NVMe installation is easy in theory but it's important to keep these things in mind:
    - Use the top spot where possible to ensure x4 PCIe lanes
    - Remove any plastic stickers from heatsinks and shields
    - Use thermal pads to disperse heat
    - If you install multiple drives this may reduce PCIe lanes available for your GPU
    - You may need to change settings in your BIOS
    - When installing in Windows use the Disk Management/Create a partition settings to set the drive up
    - Always benchmark to make sure it's running as it should be.

It's not always the top slot. Some boards steal PCIe 5 lanes from the GPU in the top slot (M.2_1), reducing your GPU from x16 to x8. This would be less of an issue with a PCIe 5 GPU, but the current generation of GPUs are PCIe 4, and will lose performance. The correct slot for a gen 4 drive can be M.2_2, if the board routes the CPU's x4 lanes there.

Its a good general rule of thumb, but if you are assembling your own PC motherboard up, then you can take the time to read some labels or the owners manual to see what is the proper slot for gen 4 support. Some boards even have the "dimm .2" slots next to the ram that allow 2 nvme similar to his pcie dual nvme card.

This seems to be a very underrated channel, the content is excellent. One question I had and was confusing from the manual, is there a difference or something to be aware of when installing NVME double sided vs single. It mentions rubber grommets and seems slot dependent looking at a ASUS z790 manual. - Cheers

    • @83n80y
      @83n80y Год назад +3

If it's double-sided then you'll need cooling on both sides. The rubber pads they often provide would buffer the metal on the bottom side from scratching the motherboard and preventing shorts. You won't see a double-sided NVMe unless you're using a very high capacity drive. All the 2TB and less I've seen are single-sided. You can tell by where the memory chips are. The back side will only have a sticker.

As always a soothing and helpful guide for this nutty new technology. As some have mentioned, you should definitely be looking at your motherboard manual. I think people try to wing it too much and with m.2 you cannot do that. Many people don't know you will often lose the use of a few sata ports when using m.2 on certain slots as well. I don't think you mentioned it, one thing I'd add is that for whatever reason, the retention screws for M.2 drives are exceptionally easy to strip. After stripping two of them, I went and bought an IFixIt kit. You don't really need to go that far, but you probably want to make sure you're using a Phillips #1 bit. Often it doesn't matter w/ Phillips heads, but in this case it does.

@@taylormeyer671 for me the issue wasn't overtightening - the issue was that the bit didn't fit very well. The M2 screws really want a P1 bit. Normally with other screws you can use other phillips bits, but not for the M2

    • @uncrunch398
      @uncrunch398 Год назад +2

It's always a best practice to use a bit that fits the screw snug. Philips was intended to prevent overtightening though. If you have precise control of your driver, torx would be better if it's an option. Over tightening is bad, slamming the tip of a driver into a circuit board is much worse.

Most board manufacturers put cooling plates like (MSI M.2 Shield Frozr) on the higher speed interfaces (PCIe 4.0) cause they run faster than PCIe 3 which means more heat generated, more expensive boards have cooling solutions on all or most NVMe slots cause you're paying more.

An high speed nvme SSD can throttle down in speed when a certain temperature target is reached, usually with long sustained data transfers. A thermal pad especially on the controller chip helps to dump the heat to a heatsink allowing it to maintain higher/full speed.

Probably not gonna get a response on this, but help would be appreciated. On my motherboard(Gigabyte B560 DS3H AC), there’s only 2 m.2 ports. I can’t figure out which to use, and no research is helping find out if they’re even gen 4.0 slots or not. But my new Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, plugged in below the graphics card, is only reading at 3500 MB/s and writing at 600 MB/s. This is still a massive step up from the current storage (485 MB/s read, 80 MB/s write, 256 GB). When plugged into the one just below the cpu, my computer won’t even attempt starting. Any ideas?

Are you using SATA drives as well? Sometimes I've seen it where the m.2. drive or SATA drive is disabled if you're using one and the other. I.e. if you have an SSD or HDD plugged in, try moving the cable to another port. Alternatively it might be a BIOS setting causing the issue.

Prawn I have the Asus GeForce RTX 4090 ROG Strix OC 24GB GDDR6X PCI-Express Graphics Card and Windows 11 installed on Crucial T705 2TB SSD PCIe Gen5 NVMe M.2 Internal Gaming SSD. The Case is NZXT H7 Flow RGB | Mid-Tower ATX Airflow Case with RGB Fans and Water Cooler NZXT Kraken ELite 360 RGB Black AIO Intel/AMD CPU Hydro-Cooler (2023 Edition). Now because I listen to some advice by you I think in another video you said to install just one for the first time and that's what I did. I have two more drives which are: Samsung 990 PRO 4TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD/Solid State Drive PC/PS5 and Samsung 870 QVO 2TB 2.5” Gen2 SATA SSD/Solid State Drive.
The ROG HYPER M.2 CARD looks very close to the Graphics Card. It would be right underneath the fans. Which is best a ROG HYPER M.2 CARD or just install on the motherboard? I would have to remove the Graphics Card first to install the Samsung 990 PRO 4TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD/Solid State Drive PC/PS5 or is it easier just to install a ROG HYPER M.2 CARD? Prawn what do you think?

  • @JustAGuy85

    Yeah, like on B550 boards...
The top M.2 slot is using the CPU's PCI-e lanes and is PCI-e 4.0 x4.
The bottom M.2 slot is using the B550 chipset PCI-e lanes, and they are all PCI-e 3.0, so the bottom M.2 slot is PCI-e 3.0 x4.
On top of that, if you fill all 6x S-ATA slots, you have 2 options.
    1) Run the bottom M.2 drive at PCI-e 3.0 x4 and lost S-ATA ports 5/6 OR
    2) Run the bottom M.2 drive at PCI-e 3.0 x2 and run S-ATA ports 5/6 at half speed.
That's how the Asus B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi II works. Which, a lot of boards won't have to worry about that because not many boards have 6 S-ATA slots. Me? I have all 6x S-ATA slots filled up with SSD's (3x) and 2x 1TB HDD's in RAID 0 and 1x 3TB HDD for back up/storage/games that I don't play often that load fast anyways.
So, I bought a S-ATA expansion card to run my HDD's on and disabled S-ATA ports 5/6 so I could get the full PCI-e 3.0 x4 out of my 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus (which is PCI-e 3.0 x4).
Read your manuals closely, they explain all of this. It even depends on the CPU you have. If you have a normal Zen 3 CPU with no APU (no 5700G or whatever), then it'll work like this.
However, the models with APUs have less PCI-e lanes to share which can have you running into issues on the top half of the board.
    Just gotta read the manual.

Good info, but you mentioned early on about RAIDing your M2 NVME, then jumped to discussing Windows disk manager, however you never mentioned the key fact of NEVER build a RAID in Windows disk manager. Yes, you didn't talk about doing that, but I have seen enough people try making RAIDs that way, that it is critical to teach to NEVER do that. The OS should never manage a RAID, only a dedicated array controller should (BIOS or dedicated controller).

If we are going to stick with the M2 standards; why not move to Flash Ram storage? Single board manufacturer Latte Panda use it to effectively provide "System on a chip" for the OS installed on the board. And Flash Ram can be faster than SSD's t think the industry is missing a trick that they had in the 8bit era. But Flash Ram instead of Rom... That makes updating the OS simpler. And that must be a good thing.

    1) Once you've secured your shiny new Gen 4 or 5 SSD into your PC, you then think "Fantastic! Now I'll install windows on this and look forward to crazy speeds." And so it is said, and so you do...only to immediately discover that the 'crazy speeds' are very, very much.....not as advertised. In fact, this drive isn't noticeably faster that an 'ancient' SATA SSD.
--> Welcome to the shocking stagnation of 4k speeds over the years.
    2) After that bombshell, you decide to turn the second Gen 4/5 NVME SSD you purchased into a data drive, and proceed to write several hundred GB of data onto the fancy new toy. BUT, well before the end of the write process you find that the speed has dropped to shockingly low speeds (in many cases this is much, much slower than a fast HDD(!!!)).
--> Welcome the the infamous 'write hole' Achilles heel.
Marketing is funny, isn't it ;)
