I felt similar. Then I got this exact Rolex and let me tell you - if someone offered me 2 black bays for it I’d say “I’ll tell the jokes here mate!” The myth is only exceeded by the watch itself. Love the thing - ok maybe not the clasp, it’s fucking shite 😂 oh if anyone wants to sell me a modern glide lock hit me up lol

@@GabrielTan1980 This might have to be the way to go. I was lucky to get a Sub Date 41 from AD... a month later I'm craving for a splash of color... like in the Black Bay. Might pick one up and then maybe get rid of my least favorite... would it be the Sub? Don't know yet

I think the BB58 serves a purpose. It gets you the vintage sub look and feel without being a knockoff, and gets you a new modern watch you can wear anywhere, bang around, and not worry about.

I own this 14060 Sub. It is a bit pedestrian in design with no date and only two lines of text, but I have learned to appreciate the simplicity and now if I look at a 4 line Sub with a cyclops date, it looks too busy and ostentatious in comparison. Kind of like when you initially have sugar in your coffee and then quit sugar, you will find sugar is too sweet and ruins the flavor of your coffee. The 14060 is the purists' Sub. It's utilitarian and functional, industrial. A tool watch to the core but that's what makes it appealing. I also love the 39.5mm size wearability. You throw it on the wrist and forget it's there. It's not designed to be a fashion statement like the Hulk or the new super cased Subs' so you can easily wear it as your 'one watch' from board shorts to boardroom. It has tritium lume which will age to that desirable custard patina. I do like the 58 and it has similar design DNA but it's a completely different watch if you scrutinise it properly. The lume plots are bigger, it has 4 lines of text, gilt dial & bezel, snowflake hands etc. The new smaller size is perfect. And at half the price of the Sub it's a bargain! I've actually put my name down on a wait list for it. For me it's not about buying a Tudor because you can't afford a Rolex. I have 4 Rolexes. I just love both brands uniquely for their own design and heritage. There are some historical accolades which Tudor achieved before Rolex which ignorant people have no idea about. If you want to argue the point, just research Tudor British North Greenland Expedition. This Tudor watch preceeded the Rolex Explorer and actually had a 3, 6, 9 dial variant. Where as the Rolex purportedly worn to summit Mt Everest was more like an Oyster Perpetual.

To me the Tudor just takes the cake here. I feel the applied indices conform better to the watch’s aesthetic and that the overall color palate is just more cohesive. The Tudor feels alive, whereas, in contrast, I feel this generation of Submariner comes off a little more stark/cold. Perhaps it’s the photography with the marble counter; I know the watch reacts to its environment and assumes the colors that surround it; either way, my personal taste has always gravitated to the submariners with painted indices! Lovely overview either way!

Had both watches in consideration and bought the 14060. Almost payed the double of the BB58 but when I tryed it on at the AD it didn‘t gave me the same feeling as the 14060 did. So a pure personal decision here.. both are great!

These were the same two I evaluated when looking for a nicer dive watch. While I ended up choosing a 14060 I could easily see why someone would pocket the difference and choose the Black Bay. Both terrific watches though I wish the Tudor was less slab sided.
Word to the wise, most 90's 14060s patina well but the hands are almost always a shade or two lighter than the dial which bothers some, myself included.

  • @bjoernaltmann

Problem with the current Submariner is the waiting time - if one even gets on a list at all. The vintage ones cost more than the new model. If one does get on a list and gets one within say two years, it will probably have gone up by £1000 or even more.

tudor for the win. i love rolex, as the rolex explorer is my favourite watch of all time, but for the submariner i preferred the vintage ones, which look just like the tudor! and it feels more authentica than a homage watch as.... well tudor and rolex are basically the same company

  • @para_bellum_1984

I'm a one-per-brand idiot savant and I've come to the conclusion that the 5513 I've wanted for years is not worth a trip through the minefield that is vintage Rolex. The 14060 unfortunately just doesn't do it for me the way the 5513 does. That being said I opted for the gorgeous 39mm MKII dial Explorer I as the only Rolex I'll ever need. This makes the BB58 the perfect Tudor for my collection as well as a nice modern value-packed counterpart to the 5513. The itch is thus strategically scratched.

In Nov 2021 I bought the Black Bay 58 Navy Blue on a bracelet to compliment a range of predominantly black-dialled watches in my collection that include the classic Rolex Submariner Date 16610 that I've cherished for 19 yrs. The Tudor is a super, very well-made luxury timepiece and I appreciate its rather understated blue dial and aluminium bezel compared to the 'bling-blue' ceramic of my Omega Seamaster 300. Like-for-like think of the Blue 58 as a more modern take on its original black and gilt sibling. The blue really pops in daylight or in well-lit rooms and a pleasure to wear. Although not quite up there with the Rolex in the absolute quality stakes - but why should it when it's barely 35% of a Sub's retail price - go to an AD and try one on. An in-house COSC certified movement, 70 hrs power reserve.... you won't be disappointed. Forget about the faux rivets - you cannot see them when wearing the watch and they are a cool idiosyncrasy.

I thought this video was a bit misleading. It was comparing an older model Rolex used to a new BB58 but never made any mention of this being an older discontinued Rolex model. Why not mention this is an older model, why not compare used 58 to used Rolex pricing, why not mention the 114060? I like your videos and did consider a 14060 before buying my BB. But one of the things I considered was that this was a discontinued model, the last of the traditional non ceramic bezels(a big buying point IMO). I thought rather than just making a quick reference to today's cases you could have done a better description of what this used Rolex is and that your comparing used collectible to new in the box. Just some feedback form a regular watcher.

Everything on that Sub (the same model I use daily) is real and functional. That BB has a copy of the original oyster bracelet of the sub but the stud and outer plate on the links are for show only and serve no purpose other than show, and the crown is not protected as the Sub’s is with its crown-guard These two things for me make the Sub more authentic and practical. BB is nice but it just isn’t a Sub.
