Rolex Submariner vs Tudor Black Bay | Watchfinder & Co.

  • The Rolex Submariner needs no introduction. It's the design people sketch if asked to draw a watch. It's made by the most valuable watch brand in the world. Today, a non-date Submariner retails at £5,450, not an inconsiderable amount. But there's something else that catches the eye, something very similar: the Tudor Heritage Black Bay. At £2,630, it's less than half the price of the Rolex. It also, since 2016, has a manufacturer movement. The question is: is it better than a Rolex Submariner?

People don't realize that SEAL Team One and Two used to be "issued" Tudor Submarines during Vietnam War, which they would put on a NATO type strap with compass. I'm surprised Tudor doesn't advertise this more.

Shipmate From what I recall the Rolex Sub was issued to the UK 🇬🇧 Military. The Tudor Sub was used for other militaries such as the US Navy. I think this was a strategic decision by Rolex at the time which may/may not have been part of a service agreement.

Whilst there is something romantic and James Bondesque about promoting a watch (Bulova Accutron) used by CIA spy plane reconnaissance pilots during the Cold War. The same can’t be said for promoting any watch used by ‘boots on ground’ armed forces engaged in direct military action in an actual war. Especially Vietnam, one of the most controversial, brutal and polarising Wars of the 20th century.

Very true! Just ask Mokie Martin!
However while visiting the Rolex AD in Carmel, Ca., a year ago. I saw a Blue dial with blue bezel Rolex Submariner from 1962 made for the US Navy, for sale for $110,000, (with original box , booklet and certificates). A few weeks later, when I visited the store again, I noticed it had been sold. When I inquired as to who would have purchased it , I was told it was purchased be a member of the Brazilian Navy who had just completed a course at the US Navy post Graduate School in Monterey. He bought it as a graduation present to himself.
His classmate bought a mint 1968 Rolex Submariner prototype ( non Comex) with a helium escape valve, for $130,000.
I guess the Brazilian Navy pays well! Lol

I had the BB but sold it cause I realized I tried to go cheap and instead of getting a sub. I felt incomplete. Less worthy. Like I went the omega route instead of the real deal. Nothing went right for me. Wife left me. Kids didn’t want to talk to me. Fired from my job at Best Buy. I saved and bought a Rolex sub and my life changed. I re-married. Had newer more better kids. Got a real job as a watch salesman at Tourneau. I had a hop to my step. I walked on the sunnier side of the street. Rolex sub = life changing.

The lugs on the Sub are too wide for the bracelet. The crown guards ruin the classic lines and script on the dial is sub-par. For what they are charging it should be a much better watch. Sadly- it is not. Even the box that Rolex gives you is an offensive green color and very cheaply made. The Tudor on the other hand has a superior dial, clean crown with no lugs, it even has a smoother winding action than the Sub. The gilt dial with the racetrack markers set it apart from everybody else. It also comes in a beautiful piano black box that looks premium. The clear winner is the Tudor. Oh...and it's even made by Rolex.

The Sub is simply not worth the paper that Rolex is charging. If it were gold then maybe, but for a steel watch with a mediocre dial and horrible box...it's just not worth it. There are much better watches out there for half the price.

    • @sadaka201

It is an extremely classy design. Just really wish it had a date window, not that it's hard to keep up with the date especially considering it's inclusion on all modern phones. I just like it on my watch.

@@luigiwastaken (This is my other account). Actually, I love it. I removed the bracelet and put it on an Everest black rubber strap. It sits lower on my wrist than with the bracelet. My only issue is I dinged the gold bezel in a couple of places. :(
The bracelet is nice but I took it off the watch before actually wearing it so the bracelet is pristine.
And I wouldn’t bother with the bund strap. I had it ordered from Tudor and this watch sits WAY to high on the bund strap. I would bang it around all day if I wore it on that strap.

Best watch video I've ever seen. One thing a Rolex buyer should consider: They produce 100-tausends od watches every year and therefore one could almost call it a mass-market product, worn by many people who have no knowledge of watches, they simply want a Rolex on the wrist, many them just to show off... deside for yourself if you want to be one of them...
