  • This video is about swapping turbos on the Detroit 60 series engine 12.7 liter. The current power is 550HP 1950 torque. The 171702 turbo is running on a million mile engine and spools up kinda slow, it is lacking low end but great top end. This is an attempt to setup a better power band and mpg with the Borg Warner K31 turbo. Straight forward details as I explain how to swap out Turbos. With no experience, this video will help you get the job done on your own.

    I have my 14 liters with the K31 & my boost I get 37 to 40 in a good hill 1850 torque winter time
    6mph summer time the most I got
    8.2mpg at 65mph I do long haul.

    You don't have to loosen all those bolts to rotate the cold side of the turbo, just that big ass clamp!

    I upgraded my 500hp 12.7L stock turbo (k31?) To 171702 mated to the PDI 1-piece "ceramic coated" exhaust manifold. Theres no noise at idle and my egt stays at 700-800⁰ flat ground. I never let egt go above 1100⁰ on hill climb. So far 2 years without a tune, and i dont think im missing out on anything. My fuel economy is at 7mpg IFTA in the North East traffic & PA mountains. Also, my boost gauge maxes out at 32-33psi ... which is correct coz Detroit 12.7 is set to 16hp/1psi ... so 16x32 = 512hp and 16x33 = 528hp .... maybe previous owner had the ecm tuned and i have no idea 😂

      Sounds like a good setup. There is many different 500hp tunes, some kick in the power at much lower rpms than other tunes at the same Hp. I have a different truck I'm running now and just put in a 500hp 1850 ecm. It's running the stock Garret Turbo and maxing out boost out at 16 psi. It pulls pretty hard from 1200-1700. What's interesting is the previous ecm at 430hp 1550 torque was building 27 psi of boost. The waste gate was not adjusted at all and the same. I wonder if the 1850 torque is making the waste gate open the entire time so the boost doesn't build. 1850 torque makes more stronger pulses. I have a 171702 laying around I could try. But I was afraid 500hp is not enough. If you say yours is working good, I'd consider when I'm up for it. I do know my exhaust did get much more quiet putting the k31 on though from the 171702. The jake brake got more quiet too. The k31 fins are slanted more flat and turbine smaller.

      @@EricWrenchMotors mine is rated 500hp/1650tq. I know that coz I just replaced my 10spd factory Rockwell meritor to 18spd Eaton Fuller and went with the same rated clutch.
      Honestly I don't see how torque rating influences turbo boost psi. I think the waste gate screw adjustment is off on your 16psi reading

      ​ that's written in to ecm means nothing it's just a text.i tuned my own ecm still says 500hp in ecm while on dyno it puts down 590hp and 2069 torque to the wheels. Turbo is 171701 which in my opinion is a better turbo for everyday work. It spool from 1200 quicker and will pull through 1700rpm which is a good working range. Where 171702 likes 14-1500 rpms and over and I don't like going over 1600 pulling hills. If you were to zero out torque limiting map through ecm your k31 would probably light up from 900rpms no additional fuel needed

    I have a borg warner with wastegate and with egr delete and reprogrammed 500 hp. 14l detroit. Should i get better mog or should i tune it down 455 hp for hetter mpg's

    I got a ddec4 12.7 tuned to 525 with stock gt42 13spd lp22.5 and 3.55s will the k31 be to big for mine?

    Since you swapped the 171702 hows the k31 working for you with 550 horsepower. are you getting the power & the fuel mileage you need & was the k31 a better choice for the horsepower you got now. & also what is your boost pressure looking like? & do you miss the 171702. From having used these two different turbos one at 600hp & one at 550hp which is the better setup

      It depends, what's your gear ratio, tire size, average speed, local, long haul? Where's your rpms going 65 mph and 55mph?

      ​​@@EricWrenchMotors well i have a 08 freightliner century ddec 6 motor 3.42 on my rears 22.5 lp tires on steers & drives i just did an inframe. & changed all the hoses, front & rear main seals, & some transmission work. When i bought the truck guy said emmissions was already deleted. Its a 12.7 conversion on 14.0l motor. Not sure what kinda turbo the motor came with🤔? I'll have to find out, when i change turbos. anyways Not even 2 days after i moved the truck with all the work being finished from mechanic shop. my turbo went out, it started leaking oil from exhaust elbow on the flex pipe. So i was thinking if i should get a bw k31 or a 171702 with tune & coated manifold & with that motor should i stay at 550 wastegated with a quicker spool up & get better fuel mileage with a k31 or run a 600hp tune with more power with a 171702. Its like you said k31 has more bottom end on spool up & 171702 has more top end on spool up. Whats your thoughts or your suggestion on my 14.l motor Your opinion will be greatly appreciated since you had both turbos. Thats why i asked how's the k31 working for you.

    I got a tune to 500 on my 12.7 but I have stock turbo which is undersized what do you recommend k31 or 171702

      Your stock Garret? It may be fine. How fast does it spool up? If you are empty and accelerate in 7th or 8th gear from 900-1800 where is the most pull at? Because if it's 1650 it's probably fine

      Torque kit? A shop near lancaster carries PDI gaskets and bolts. It's a PDI manifold to k31.

      I have this k31 in a 14l too and is the weakest truck ever no more 26 psi I will try to get another program no luck so far

      You can adjust boost levels with the wastegate spring/rods, 26 or 66 your choice. By buy a pressure gun and then u tube it

      You can boost a k31 high for sure but the egts go up big time. If you measured the pressure between the engine and turbo exhaust side, it could be double of your boost pressure which is very inefficient. There is bigger waste gated turbos for Cats, don't know the name though. The 14 liter waste gated stock Turbo probably does well on a tuned 12.7. A 171702 can work on a 14 with 515hp and still have some low end. But at idle there will be no back pressure with no waste gate. It will vibrate little more and make more noise at idle inside the cab.

      You know it's interesting, I have a stock Garret Turbo at 430 foot pedal hp on a different 12.7 truck. It hauls ass, 3.70s, 295 steer tires on the drives. What's interesting is at 430hp it lacks some low end and the power starts building up from 1400 to 1700. The k31 has more power down low. The exhaust turbine fins on the k31 are more restricted for flow compared to garrett. The are closer together with smaller gaps between the blades. I believe that's why it boosts so well down low, like 900-1500rpm. But at 1650 it's restricted more compared to the garrett it seems. The ecm for this setup when I installed this k31 was stuck at 550hp 1950 torque. The memory chip was bad and wouldn't accept a new tune. So that's why I tried the k31, because the 171702 was lacking low and dogging around on smaller roads.

      @@kylebowman4419 at 450Hp foot pedal a stock Garret will perform very well. But we don't know if it's 450hp foot. It could be 370hp foot, 450hp cruise control. That's no fun and is weak

    Hello I have a k31 don’t boost more that 21 psi at low end is ok but 9and 10 Jesus no balls . Wat u thing about a boost elbow u think it will work . Any ideas

      Straight up, we're talking about foot pedal ecm fuel release and timing on fuel release. No matter how worn out the pistons are, fuel and timing can be bumped up and increase turbo spool.

      I didn't check it but it was boosting quicker. I had a good pull from 1100 to 1700 and then it fell flat. The 171702 made more power for the wide open highway. The k31 was superior for off highway roads, and stop and go.

      No egr. I knew a guy with a 14 liter egr and got 6mpg went to 7mpg egr disabled

      I did put one on afterwards for the k31 I didn't have one for the 171702. I always run higher rpms up hills
