Ahem, to be clear: i didn't measure my drawing (which is obviously NOT to scale). I measured my face and used the drawing to illustrate the point :)
First time seeing math outside of class😂
I think there's error in your calculations I did the math and according to me the area of your face should be 473 sq cm
@@priyalgupta1172 My calculations are far from Jo's and nearer to you.
Also, I think it's important to consider the face as a 3 dimensional space, which adds up even more cm.
@@nicholasbailey812 math anxiety?
Hi, you might be interested in watching Dr Dray's video "how much sunscreen to use to avoid a burn". She cited from an academic article about the size of human's face, neck, arms etc and how many grams of sunscreens we need for each area. The article's link is in the description box. According to that article, the numbers you got from your own measurement are pretty accurate.
Oh that is good to know my math skills haven’t disappeared hehe!
Also just throwing a little math out there for those who are like “sunscreens have different weights”....1g is equal to 1ml. While this conversion is referring to water, we can use it as a general rule. So 1tsp is 4.9ml so 1/4tsp is roughly 1.23ml or gram. A little nerdy I know but in case ppl don’t have scales.
Great point! Usually water is the first (and most voluminous) ingredient on these products, therefore using the 1ml to gram conversion per water is a good rule of thumb!
Hie...i have a doubt...does it mean if a product is labelled as 50g it has 50ml of product approximately?..I came across this sunscreen Purito which says 60ml but has 90gms as weight?
Can u please clarify😊
Brilliant, I love this! Hopefully people will feel encouraged to measure out their faces and see what the actual required amount is. It seemed absurd to me that a full grown man face would need as much sunscreen as my little pea head. So I cut out some grid paper into squares and triangles and lo and behold I was using way too much indeed. Unfortunately, even with the lowered amount of sunscreen, it still refused to absorb into my skin but that's a whole other issue.
Ah! Hehe that is a way more precise measurement. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for the mention and education!
You are amazing! Thanks for the information! 🤗❤️
1.3ml measure was i believe conduced "generously" and mostly by measuring faces of men. I'm a tall guy with big face and my face is 570cm2 so I would need 1.15ml :) so i just use the standard 1/4 teaspoon to apply. i think no one will go wrong with that.
I’m 6’4 ish with a big face too lol
Same here 🌎😂
Oh wow. I just found your channel. Your channel and contents are pretty good and can't believe i didn't watched all these 5years ago. I wish i could save my skin but it's never late so Thanks.
I really love what you do, Jo. As a guy, not everything is relevant to me, but in videos like this I really appreciate your approach and effort.
aw thanks! really appreciate the kind words :)
Thank you For sharing your content once more. :) I just had a request, could you do a video on retinol, of the different forms and when you should start to use them. I am currently going to be 24 in two months, I felt that I just start some prep for my anti-aging. But I thought that this was a marketing deploy, to get more of my wallet. I would love and appreciate to see more of what you think on this topic. xx Thank you :)
i do a 1/4 teaspoon measurer for my face & neck and apply it in 3 layers!!! i'm looking into powders to reapply mid-day or carry something in my bag and your videos are super helpful !!!
Why 3 layers? Vs a thick layer or higher SPF...?... when you apply another layer the underlayer wets again.
Can you do how much it can stay on our face and be effective. Some say on the internet it is 2 hours. That is too short. I wouldnt be healthy to apply this much to your skin if your are outdoor all day
I thoroughly enjoy your sense of humour. Fortunately, it sounds like I’ve almost worked up to the appropriate sunscreen quantities.
I too am self conscious about my big head , which looks fine to everyone else. Nonetheless it measures big.....can’t beat the maths.
Haha. I am the one sheepishly going”large” please when anywhere where I have to rent a helmet. Heehee
I have become a sunscreen warrior and may be guilty of overdoing it at times. Its not pretty 🙀 I think your illustration meets the needs on estimating what we need to know for protection. I really need to try the colorscience for the touch ups. Its nice to you.
Haha well better to overdo than underdo!!! Also, my calcs don’t consider the neck so don’t forget that! :)
just google about 1/4 teaspoon sunscreen to apply on face, and found out your channel. very good one, but unfortunately, seems you are inactive for a while. hope you' ll be back on youtube soon. from your new subscriber.
Hie...thats very informative...but i have a doubt..can we assume 1gm=1ml even for silicone based sunscreens...Thank u for the vid once again...😁
Love your videos. Now i can carry a 1/4 tsp anywhere i go and dont worry that i didnt put enough sunscreen :) 🤣
Haha orrrr just use it once so you have a sense of how much it is and eyeball it.
Jo's Logic vs Luxury i dont trust my eyeballing skills. I was literally pouring sunscreen into the spoon and apply it. People saw me do it in public was like what the hell. How bougie 😂
so it it okay to apply 1/4 teaspoon on my face too is it still accurate?
I think the powder's SPF is measured the same way as the liquids. Simply because it can follow the g/cm2 rule, I don't know you would apply another rule.
That’s my guess too since I haven’t read anything to suggest otherwise. Thanks!
This really helped! Idk why but everyone suggests applying 1/2 teaspoon sunscreen and it seems so much when I apply it on my face and neck and the worst part is that it's very uncomfortable to apply that much sunscreen. I'm still not sure why people are applying twice the amount of sunscreen than what they actually should.
Powder doesn’t have any water in it therefore nothing evaporates on the skin after you apply, so you would need to apply less weight than the normal amount to get the same amount of coverage. I still think powders are an unreliable form of sunscreen but just wanted to point that out
Is amber solaire suncream good for oily skin that has acne
Your face is gorgeous! Very informative video.
Thanks!
Hey I really loved this video forget those hostile proclaiming they know everything! I think you take what you need from a video. And you made great content! THANK YOU
aw thanks!! :) have a great day!
Beautiful girl with a lovely smile😘
your powder sunscreen doesnt have water which is likely a majority of the mass in normal sunscreen
Correct! I guess I am not 100% sure if powder sunscreens are tested in the same way, but I also haven’t read anything to the contrary therefore to get that amount of coverage based on weight for a powder is quite impossible for the normal user!
I’ve been thinking about trying Colourscience for awhile;light brown complexion.(? !) l’ll also check the ingredients due to allergies, or simply throw caution to the wind as l’m seeing my dermatologist this week!
Yes I do like it a lot for reapps on a light activity day (ie average workday) but not as the main one! Good luck at the derm :)
SPF testing is done under an internationally recognized standard, which is the 2mg per cm squared. This includes powders. They are technically allowed to label it as SPF x as long as it passes that standard.
Very interesting!! Thanks!
Thanks!
You're so eloquent.
I follow the recommendation of Dr.Dray who is a dermatologist here on RUclips. I re-apply through out the day.
I don't think the 0.8g applies to the powder because there are no emolients in there which dilute the sunscreen components :) I don't even think the 0.8 for a classic creamy sunscreen is convertable to any other form of sunscreen :) clearly we would have to know the amount of active sunscreen components per cm2 to calculate the needed sunscreen amount for different ways of delivery :)
It’s true-I am not sure if powder sunscreens are tested in the same manner as liquids, however I have not read anything to the contrary! Therefore until I see differently, I have to go based on the same standards of 2mg/cmsq which is a lot of powder!!
% of active ingredient in a formula is not a reliable indicator of SPF value, because the sunscreen's base impacts the overall SPF of the product. Lab Muffin Beauty Science has a great video in which she talks about why DIY sunscreens are a bad idea and touches on this. Assuming you can comfortably get the amount in this video across your face, you're probably applying enough. If your sunscreen sets so quickly that you find it hard to distribute, that's when you'd need to use more. If you find your sunscreen is cosmetically inelegant if you apply it all at the same time, sometimes doing two slightly smaller layers sequentially can help as well.
Ayse Blogosphere No, that’s not how it works. SPF is tested by applying 2 mg/cm^2 of the PRODUCT being tested, not the active ingredients. This is the standardized way of testing SPF for all products. The results of this test are what goes on the package. Whether the product is lotion, powder, liquid foundation, spray... 2 mg/cm^2 must be applied to get the full rated SPF.
Did you minus the weight of the spoon on the scale ?
Yes, my scale has a tare function.
I'm wondering if the scale just goes to 1g starting 500mg, as 0.5g rounds up to 1g with no decimals...
Brilliant!
Thank you!
You didn't take into account your nose or other "terrain" on your face. Our faces aren't 2d.
Not to mention that I find it irresponsible to tell people they are using too much, when it's a known fact that the vast majority don't use anywhere near 1/4 tsp.
I would rather risk using too much than using too little. I prefer knowing I am protected.
Correct I used a measuring tape and as mentioned was a bit more generous with my measurements in order to be conservative in my estimation and account for the divers and bumps here and there. Anyway, if anything this encourages people to check how much they need and probably use a correct amount. If you’re talking about the title, well, we have to make ourselves click worthy :p
Alot of sunscreen packages say that the sunscreen doesnt provide direct protection from the sun. So unless if you are wearing a hat or use an umbrella, your sunscreen is completely useless
What? Your sunscreen absolutely provides direct protection, or else it wouldn't work. What it does not do is last forever, and its duration of coverage is directly correlated to how long you spend in the sun/how high the UV index is while you are exposed to UV light. Factors like sebum, surface friction, water contact, and various other things that can disturb the sunscreen film and therefore your protection should be factored in, which is why reapplication is key to maintaining protection.
Tandra Akther What are you talking about? Maybe you mean that you have to apply chemical sunscreen 20min before exposure. That doesn't mean it doesn't provide direct protection.
Frozen music thats not what i mean. I live in Europe and behind the packages it is always written that a sunscreen doesnt give full protection, considering that there are some ingredients out there that react with the sun, whether it be chemical or filter. Thats why its highly recommended that you wear long sleeves and pants to avoid direct contact from the sunshine or just stay in the shade, as the sun isnt good for you overally.
Hi! But in the liquids the water on them is also part of the 0.8 mg. So in the powder that should be different. I think. But in the end the conclusion is the same: powder can't be the main source of protection.
Sorry for my self taught-non perfect english hahaha. And a big kiss from Chile. I love your videos!
It is not, powders are tested the exact same way. So in short, powder SPF's are bullshit.
Queen of applying too much sunscreen
You cant measure your face which is 3 dimensional with a two dimensional drawing! That is ridiculous!!!! Do you look at a map of the world and read it as flat?
i didn't measure the drawing (which is obvs not to scale). i measured my face and used the drawing to illustrate the point. lol
Lmaooo
Jo's Logic I would have loved to see you measuring the concave and convex surfaces of your nose and face!
this is so rude lmao
Palladio 747 Omg I'm done... Your killing me 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂☠️☠️☠️
