So, depending on how new your windows are in your house, you can probably be completely fine. Most, if not all windows being produced currently have UVB/UVA protection in order to protect the integrity of furniture and fabrics. Also certain substances can contain chemicals that when exposed to UV can be broken down to be toxic.

I really appreciate this. I’ve been hearing dermatologists online say you must reapply every two hours even if you are indoors. There is no way a normal working person spending most of the day in an office can or will reapply sunscreen at six a.m., eight a.m., ten a.m., noon, two p.m., four p.m, six p.m., and eight p.m. (assuming summer). At the beach, sure! But inside? Thank you for adding reason to the conversation.

if you use 50+ spf you get more long lasting protection for more time. i only apply it every 4 hours when the sun hits hard in the morning around 10 am, then i reapply it at 2 pm usually cuz i’m not strict but it’s really sunny and if the sun still shining and i have to drive somewhere, probably i retouch it a little at 5 pm. but i live in mexico with a high heat weather and strong uv index, so it depends your region, uv index, for how long you stay indoors or outdoors, if you sweat and rub it off constantly, etc but up to you to choose the spf level protection

Some of the crazy skin care junkies spend $20 on 4-5 different serums and $60 on their moisturizer etc. and then only apply their sunscreen once daily. if you use some of the drugstore products Dr Dray recommends and have just a simple routine, I find it isn’t that costly (relatively speaking, I know different people have different definitions of what that means). I wear sunscreen every day and usually reapply it twice daily. I don’t get much acne in general.
I’m not saying that she’s the holy grail of all skincare and everything she says is how you must do it, but she makes some good points and I think that once you get used to a routine that works for you it isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

I use SPF regularly, but will oftentimes forgo it if I'll only be getting short bursts of incidental exposure and the UV index is 2 or below. I'm very light skinned and know that I need to take precautions, but trying to block out every single ray of UVA/UVB to the point of wearing SPF indoors is too exhausting to even think about and and seems a little overzealous and unnecessary to me. It's really interesting how the sunscreen advice varies between countries - the "official" stance of the American Academy of Dermatology is much more on the side of "wear sunscreen all the time" than in Australia and the UK, and hasn't been updated for a long time. I'm not sure if it's overcautiousness, lack of collaboration between different disciplines in medicine (the Australian guidelines were developed as a collaboration between the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society, the Australasian College of Dermatologists, Cancer Council Australia, Endocrine Society of Australia and Osteoporosis Australia), not being up to date with evidence, or a reflection of corporate interests...

Thank you so much for this video. 🤗 Hearing Dr. Dray’s recommendations of applying sunscreen 3 times per day has given me anxiety. It has almost made me fear being outdoors at all during the day. I’m going to keep applying sunscreen daily if I’m outdoors, but I’m not going to obsess over it anymore. If I still get skin cancer and I prematurely age, then so be it. At least I lived my life.

@Wilfred Willy even though thats true it's sad when people just go along with whatever societal pressures are placed on them. I dont blame them for it because it's true , appearance does put people ahead and It's your choice to meet those societal standards after all.
but you also need to remember its mentally taxing and time consuming to make choices based on appearance all the time. Every decision you make has a cost and we all live for a limited time .
Truth is, You will age wither and die like the rest , It doesn't matter how pretty you are you'll still end up with a rotted corpse.
Besides , those of us in the industry know the reality and we prey on your insecurities. Marketing teams know women have spending power and corporations want your money. what better way to collect it than by preying on your belief that beauty is worth the price ? Lol
And Cosmetic formulators will giggle at people paying a fortune for any cosmetic product. If you have the money to burn on luxury skincare products during a global pandemic then by all means do so but never forget the actual cost of that product is far lower than what you're paying for lmao . Youre only paying for the image. You're paying for the feeling that it will help you. You're paying for your insecurities and that is exactly what the industry wants you to do. Even if a product does nothing well at least you paid for the placebo effect, right ?
But yes protect yourself . use sunscreen when needed bc prevention is the best medicine( Dont underestimate skin cancer!) And know that you dont have to pay a fortune for an effective product.

This was great, Michelle! As a person who is between Fitzpatrick phototype 4 and 5, I am often told that I don't need sunscreen. But I do wear it because not only can I suffer from hyperpigmentation (thank you for bringing that up). Another problem especially for people of color in the States is that ironically because we are told that we don't need sunscreen by so many outlets, we don't wear it. Now there are stats coming out saying that, even though it is less common for us to get skin cancer, when we do get melanoma, etc it's usually at a very advanced stage. I wear sunscreen also because I think of its application more like a behavior I'd rather not break, if that makes sense! I already have trouble remembering things. This is just such an easy thing to help me not age as fast, so...why not? haha. Thanks again for this informative video.

I recently learned that the evidence doesn't support sun exposure being linked to melanoma development in dark skinned people - the difference in outcomes is more due to lack of access and awareness (including lack of education of dermatologists about what skin cancers look like in dark skin). The article from The Conversation that I linked in the description sums up some of the issues specific to dark skin: theconversation.com/amp/sunscreen-wouldnt-have-saved-bob-marley-from-melanoma-and-it-wont-help-other-dark-skinned-people-116979

@@LabMuffinBeautyScience This is very interesting. I think that this is true and I was going to mention that, in the US, it definitely is at least a combination of lack of access to institutional (medical, in this case) resources. This article most certainly convinced me of that. To me, it seems like we need a lot more evidence all around. I think as you mentioned in your video, because so many of these studies are being done on people significantly lighter than me, it's hard to graft those results onto us (Black people) with regard to melanoma. This makes me want to do more research. And yell at people who are running studies lol! I am not sure if you are aware (probably) but there is huge problem with test subjects skewing white and male in the States. So unfortunate that this leads to a lack of data here. I feel like I have a more informed opinion on this due to the information you have shared! I will continue to wear sunscreen but for aging benefits (which I found interesting in the article) v incidence of melanoma (which is not supported). Thank you for sharing this article!

Bottom line: do what works best for you.

If we work outdoors 8 hours a day during winter in the Pacific Northwest, the daily UVA dose may be high enough for us to benefit from sun protection.
As a Canadian, this is what I found for UV index from 0 to 2 in terms of recommendations:
Minimal sun protection required for normal activity. Wear sunglasses on bright days. If outside for more than one hour, cover up and use sunscreen. Reflection off snow can nearly double UV strength, so wear sunglasses and apply sunscreen on your face.

Ahh Michelle, I am so happy you made this video!!!
I badgered you with a bunch of questions about sunscreen indoors and at what distance away from a window was exposure negligent, etc, about a year ago on one of your videos because I use photosensitizing products head to toe, am home a lot, walk around like a damn nudist, and like to keep blinds open for the kitties and doggies.
You were so kind to respond and honest about not really knowing, and I really appreciated it. THIS is the exact kind of information I had been looking for, and I am so grateful for you looking into this headache and making everything accessible for us!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all that you do!

It is a relief to hear some practical advice here. I have been a faithful sunscreen wearer for over 30 years. My skin is definitely the better for it, aging wise. But I have not worn it indoors, it definitely contributes to clogged pores on me, my skin looks far better if I am able to take some breaks from it in that regard.

That’s super interesting. As someone with very little melanin in my skin and an over 75% incidence of various skin cancers in my family just by going to the grandparent/aunt or uncle level, I’m not in the position to take a chance but it’s something I’ve wondered for those with less of a very high risk for months.

i am so glad you posted this! i’ve recently gotten prescribed some products to help out a really bad acne breakout and the pharmacist insisted on me getting sunscreen because the products will make my skin sensitive to sun, but i found it unnecessary because i don’t go outside nor do i have any windows that face the sun and it is almost always cloudy/foggy where i live- thanks to you, i am able to better form a decision of whether or not to wear it during lockdown!

This is such a good video! I've been reading studies about this and so happy you covered it. There is so much obsessive behaviour regarding sunscreen, it's painful. And you can do so much at home to protect yourself from UVA that will help you more than a sunscreen with a PPD of 16-20. Like having window films that block you UV in extreme cases, having blackout curtains and so on

I always check the UV before I go out. As a dark skinned person, I don’t apply unless it’s 4+, and even then only if I’ll be in direct sunlight for over 20 minutes. I figure 20 mins of sun exposure is healthy dose of vit D. I also avoid going out during the day time and do my walks at sunset only so I don’t have to wear it. I only wear it when I know I’m spending significant time outdoors on a sunny day.

I am also a dark skinned woman and I apply sunscreen every day even if I don't leave my house. I do this after I wash my face in the morning. Like you, I try to avoid going out for walks in the middle of the day and instead do early mornings or evening. Also, I don't reapply sunscreen unless I am at the beach, the pool, or hiking. I figure with the melanin and the application is more than enough.

Thank you for answering those "in between" questions when it comes to this kind of thing. I always wondered about the variables of indirect sunlight, skin tone (light skinned blacks/asians/indians), incidental sun exposure (in a car, during errands), and the UV index. Great break down! Thanks again!

I love how it is very situation-based! (And thank you for your time to try calculate that super overwhelming diffuse-sky view formula)
And yes, thank you on mentioning COST as consideration!
Sunscreen is expensive no matter where you buy it if you compare it to other products (the decent one to use)
I live in a quite crowded area where my house has no gap with my neighbours... so my house is quite dark to begin with. Plus, a lot of building in my neighbourhood are "shading" my house (like hotel, another house) because they have more than 1 floor, and my house in only 1 floor. It really different with someone who lived in apartment that has a big window for scenery and live above 1st floor
But of course when I do a lot of activities around my house (like cleaning, cooking etc) I would wear sunscreen, but when I just laying in my bed all day or working on my desk, windows closed... why am I using sunscreen... I would waste a lot of money that I could invest on other important things!
I started care using sunscreen around 4 years ago (16.y.o), you don't know how much money I spend for it (plus money for extra cleanser& moisturiser since when I wear sunscreen I need to cleanse more thoroughly which often my my skin drier). Now I realise how big my money went to skincare...and all these years 60-70% of my skincare budget are went to sunscreen. I want to suppress the money I use for skincare... this is outweigh my capability

Thank you for this video! I’ve actually been thinking about this topic a lot. I also always find myself thinking about your videos a lot after I watch them, and I like that. You give great food for thought, even if there isn’t always a clear black and white answer to the question you’re researching. I like that you present an unbiased look at things that can be hard for some of us to look at with middle ground, esp. after having sun protection so ingrained. I am a sunscreen junkie and will admit I can be a bit fanatical, so this video made me uncomfortable at times, but I think that’s a good thing. I can be a bit of a black and white thinker, even w other topics (I lift weights & woo boy is there debate on which exercises are safe sometimes!) and channels like yours help me see nuance in things. Thanks again and keep up the great work!
