I’m 47 and started applying sunscreen in my 20s. It was after getting a really bad sunburn while on vacation in the Bahamas. Until then I thought Black people my complexion were immune to sunburn and didn’t need sunscreen. I still only applied sunscreen on the most sunny/hot days, and never on days that I didn’t leave the house. I also wasn’t applying enough most times. In my mid 30s I worked at a plastic surgery/derm practice that saw a lot of patients who were treated for melanoma. I then learned about proper application of sunscreen. I’ve been much more cognizant of sun protection after that but the options for sunscreen that are brown skin friendly were few 10+ years ago, so I can’t say I wore it every day unless I knew I’d be out in the direct sun. Thankfully sunscreen has come a long way and I can now find options that don’t leave my brown skin ashy and white so it’s part of my daily skin care routine all year.

sharing my sunscreen story because everyone seems to be doing it!!
i live in australia and have a naturally fair complexion, hence i learnt at a very young age to wear sunscreen to protect from the australian uv.
however it’s only recently i’ve made an effort to wear a high uv sunscreen every day, not only cause it protects me from the uv but because otherwise i’ll burn from the slightest bit of sun. but i have many friends who don’t wear sunscreen and take it seriously because they have tanned skin or skin that barely goes red/burns, and i keep telling them it doesn’t matter and that they should apply it anyways, but they don’t care.
it’s sad to say but at some point they’re going to learn the damages of the australian sun😔✊🏻

I used sunscreen for 1 year daily as per my doc's recommendation... one day my doc was sick & recommended me another dermatologist for that day because I was already waiting for her, he told not to use any sunscreen, nor even cleanser, instead suggested me to use body soap as a cleanser.
Then I went back to my previous dermatologist, she respected her professor, assured me to use a cleanser instead of body soap & told me to only use sunscreen when I'm outside (as I go outside fully covered) or spend long screen time.
Now I don't know whom to follow...

I used to use the Burnout Sensitive one and it was too costly due to shipping fees on top of the the price of the actual product. I'd say both were good but Bondi Sans is less than half the price and feels the same on my skin which is hydrating with a slight weight to it, not too light but not greasy feeling as much. Reapplying is one of the most common mistakes. Many beautician including derms told me to apply sunscreen but they forgot to mention the importance of reapplying until I learnt it from other derms from the States and Australia. We should always reapply every 2-3 hours. I always carry a bottle of sunscreen in my bag so I can reapply it. I don't wear make up so it's easier for me to reapply.

i started using sunscreen at 14. i went from cerva ve to elta md to sunbum and am going back to elta md once i get the chance to buy a new one. i have bad acne scars from when i was 14 as well as some hyperpigmentation, i try to use tretinoin weekly but get lazy. being asian-brown skin colored-i always thought i was immune to the sun cause i never got sun burn(only tan). then i found out about early aging and how sunscreen can help with the healing process of my acne scars. my motivation since 14 was literally me telling myself that “i dont want to look like im 40 when im only 20” 😅 this video was great since i was already good with all the tips except for the amount… didnt know i needed to put THAT much but ill definitely try

I'm turning 34 yo, and just recently I started worrying about applying sunscreen. It became a routine and mandatory things to buy when I'm doing groceries.
I Brazil, sunscreen is a little expensive, so I always buy the one that's on sale/especial offer.
I also preffer brands like Anasol and Ricosol (from manufacturer Dahuer), Red Apple, Nivea and Cenoura & Bronze.

The problem is its so expensive for a good one that doesn't look crazy on your face and still even just body sunscreen is expensive, and for the amount you need and reapply, it's hard to afford.

This is why it's stupid to be so damn obsessed with sunscreens. Like bich you gonna get old when you get old, no matter how hard you try to stop the wrinkles. Applying while inside and reapplying every 2 hours even when the UVI is low, is just bs and money wasting. Some people can barely afford to pay rents and these sunscreen obsessed dermatologists and influencers want us to waste so much money on it.
