I've taken a paid course. I first started on RUclips, then mixed that in with some college courses, then mixed it in with some online courses from the RUclips community. I can honestly say that paid courses are *not* a fast track. They don't always teach you everything you need to know because most tutorials (and online courses) don't teach you everything you need to know. There are a lot of areas where RUclipsrs and online instructors may not know something, for example what one part of a modifier does or a workflow for how to do something. In short really, if you're doing it as a freelancer and you don't plan to work with a professional team, you can get away with free tutorials. If you want to make a career out of it by working with a company, at the very least you should buy a book to supplement online tutorials, free or not. Also, learn more about photography. I can't stress enough how it's important to know so much of what photography teaches. Composition, lighting, etc...
Agree on the supplemental books, do ypu have any recommendations? I read one last year about photography lighting techniques that was 10/10 but I sadly don’t remember what it was called, a collegue lent it to me
Colleges teach you every aspect of the pipeline up to mediocre level. That is ok if you want to be an indy solo creator, but if you want to freelance for companies or work for companies, you need to focus on becoming great at one or two parts of the pipeline. Sure, it helps to have rudimentary skill in other parts as well, but you don't need to, and shouldn't, spend a lot of time learning parts that you don't want to work in. Don't spend a hundred ours learning to sculpt if you want to work as an animator or compositor.
Everyone seems to be saying, "learn the basics," but there isn't any discussion about what, "the basics" actually are. Hard surface modelling? Sculpting? Grease pencil? Materials? Downloading and installing Blender? (Way too many tutorials include that.) It's hard to, "learn the basics" when don't know what the basics actually are.

what i appreciate about your videos is that you show really quickly what different nodes do and how you can play with them. It was so difficult to work myself into the node/material system and you really helped me understanding many of them
Pardon the 10 haters... I find most of your stuff to be really useful and the best part is that I end up with something that looks so far beyond my current scope it can't help but inspire. I agree that focusing on the basics is good at first, but dipping your toes into stuff that's totally out of your league every so often can help you jump a bunch of steps farther ahead than you might have not screwing around with them. I like your shorter tuts that teach us things, but I'd be super stoked to see a series of 30-45 minute Ducky3D tuts coming out every month or so that end up with something a little more in depth and complicated too. Lectures are boring, and should really be kept short, but doing is great and is way more forgiving.
I just graduated from University working with Maya for the first time (made a basic short), and now I'm learning Blender watching Skillshare, Udemy, and especially quick RUclips tutorials like you said. The daily work, even just for an hour, seems to be keeping me consistent, and alternating between different teachers also keeps it pretty fresh while still learning the basics. Love the channel BTW! I just started following along with some of your videos. =)
Been watching Nathan for about a year I believe and he has genuinely taught me a lot through his teaching methods . Even though I’m wanting to become a Games designer I still love digital art and his methods (that are universal) have taught me a lot about the whole digital creation world if you know what I mean.

Thanks a lot Ducky.The same thing happened to me.I was bored of copying tutorials and I thought i wasnt meant for blender but after a while when things started to sink in I got the freedom to make my own stuff.After that I kept critisizing my self that Im making very basic stuff but you made me feel better by saying that the basic and fun stuff is the way to go.Now I know im on the right track.

What field of 3D did you decide to go into at first (ex: ArchViz, Product Viz, Character Design, Concert Aniamtion, etc, etc 3. How long did it take for you to put together a decent showreel/portfolio to show potential clients
Those who are learning blender don't compare u r art with the art they make in tutorials cuz behind that perfect art there is 10+ years of struggling . and u will get good but u just have to keep going : ) because comparing u r art with others will always make u sad and u will give up so just don't give up and be proud on what u make , even its a simple cube
AlI the advice you give here, Ducky, is right on target. Thank you. I think your first point is hugely important: start with short projects, not too far beyond your skill level, that allow you to accomplish something during the learning session. This is actually an important element in learning theory. If the learner wraps up a learning task with a sense of accomplishment, progress is quicker and the learner is more likely to stick to it in the long run. Some how I forgot this concept when I first started learning Blender, and I wasted a lot of time tackling large projects that were beyond my skill level, and getting obsessed with some detail for hours. I finally became willing to delete everything and start over with "Basic Blender Projects." This is when I finally started making progress. I've since gone back to some of those abandoned projects with better skills and a fresh eye to find that what once seemed like unsolvable problems are now quite easy for me. Also, when you get stuck, delete and start over. You will approach the subject differently next time around, or something will occur to you that will make the next attempt more successful. Also, commit to learning one new keyboard short cut a day, or you will end up learning a limited set of shortcuts, and never learn others that would give you so much more flexibility. Have fun

I used Maya for 10+ years. And that helped me learn Blender about 2 years ago but I really think the quality of Blender tutorials is outstanding and simply unmatched when compared with other communities like Maya, Max, Houdini, C4D - trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=blender%20tutorial,c4d%20tutorial,maya%20tutorial,3dsmax%20tutorial,houdini%20tutorial - This + 2.8 + eevee + its gltf support was the main reason I decided to choose Blender instead of Cinema4D or Houdini. One of your tutorials gave me a huge yes! moment tonight. Alpha channel settings in Eevee. I kept missing where i needed to go. Now i'm creating something myself, no tutorials; just me and Blender.
I was just thinking this the other day. There's a wealth of tutorials online, so it's hard to decide which ones to go with and what flow to follow. Very easy to burnout if you're basically watching the same tutorial over and over from different people masked as something unique you want to learn.
your tutorials are best Ducky. I agree with your advises and i want to add another point too. you dont have to take Blender course, u can take a course about Art and Art Composition instead of blender course. all about what you can make is 70% of Art, 30% of Blender. This will be better about your Creativity.
I recommend if anyone wants to start with the dount, watch the series until the middle, and try to start without watching, if you did just good then blender is for you, if not then it hard for you specially if didn't train every day.
I'm a intermediate at blender now, almost a year of experience, took 3 months to perfect basics and got to track You can too make this possible if you take the step and have patience, i have a very ill patience but it's the motivation of either money or fame or attention that keeps you going
You are so lucky to be learning Blender at 14. If Blender had existed when I was your age, my life might have taken a whole different trajectory. Keep at it and have fun.
This is exactly what I've been doing. A little bit of everything. From sculpting to hard surface. I'm still terrible at animation and compositing and need to get better at texturing within blender without relying on external resources. At this stage it feels like it will never be more than a hobby but it would even be cool to work on something for free.

Love the way you structure your Vids - Would love to get into more Particle Animation (Explosions and Melting and Running water). Old but good video thanks. Slowly getting comfortable with modeling . One thing that wasnt clear is how "mark sharp" , "edge crease", mark seam & bevel weight work when used properly That would make a helpful video for sure . CHeers
Great advice. Learning Blender has been on my agenda for a couple of years. I had made the mistake of watching tutorial videos that assumed the viewer had the basics under control Without the prerequisite knowledge, and a comfortable understanding of Blender's workflow concepts, I would quickly feel overwhelmed & loose interest Your video has given me some hope for success in my quest, but my first headache is finding a working non-glitchy driver for the Nvidia video card from hell that I inherited

I had blender downloaded for about 6 months, I used it the day I got it, gave up, came back 6 months later, and now I'm actually really good. The only real limitation at this point is my hardware. Yeah, I still watch material tutorials and stuff like that. But I never just "do the tutorial"
I also spent this last year watching tutorials, be patient, it's like learning to surf or ski. It is easy to get lost in RUclips land so you should just make anything!!
Can confirm. I'm only 1 month into the learning process of Blender. So far it has all been RUclips learning and it all began heavily at the basics. I never through I'd be making the things I am so quickly.
Good stuff. I've been doing blender for simply years now and still feel like a newb. I'll have to follow some of this advice and see if my skill level doesn't improve faster
i heard a saying from the NFL head coaches. instead of trying to outsmart the other team's game plan just K.I.S.S. which means (Keep It Simple Stupid) I have gravitated to the mini short videos as after doing BG's Donut i tried some of his other stuff, which He is a good teacher but the models were just too advance for me at the time. I started watching 3D Ducky and i'm glad that it has the same philosophy.
I learned a lot of cool stuffs from your videos and that made me feel I was learning and doing nice things on Blender! Thanks for teaching us through your videos!
Great video with lots of great advises! Thank you so much for that! I always stumble into the tutorial trap and at the end of the day I got nothing done myself. Made a database with over 100 shortcuts, which I can search in. I guess most of them won't I be using until weeks from now. I Even prepared reference images in Photoshop for modelling my Canon Eos 80D (I'm a photographer and it's my every day workhorse). At least I have lots of knowledge how to compose and se lights etc. But placing things in Blender is so hard, if you always have those fancy complicated scenes in mind. For now I have decided to get most of my input from tutorials from Grant Abbitt and Imphenzia, who both make great content with low poly models. Maybe that's the way to start and improve. We will see. ;)
nah it is not boring i just want to create scenes.. i do not have two screens but i have an old laptop and i use that to watch the tutorial.... and nop i think two to three weeks is enough if you are interested. i loved drawing when i was a kid and situations in life and always stumble upon some giant bolder when i wanted somethin in life.. and now i came across this and i think i can do something better about it. =) i want to create a small scenes on this software and perhaps teach as well.. at present i am currently 1 on the scale of 1 to 10, where 0 is nothing and 1 is something. :D but i am trying to create cars and animation into the scense by creating loop. I loved you neon sign lesson. Love you sir. you are amazing. pity we are far if we were closer could have learned and create some small stories but i love your channel. =)
Our startings pretty much same, except me started in this qurentine and i hv lotta study to do, but m just obsessed with blender and its kinda ur fault😅 U r an inspiration ❤️❤️
I know this is an old upload... BUT I want to help add a little clarity to one of the points about "Do something every day"... I really think it's a point that gets "skipped over" frequently, and it WILL really help you (reader) through the learning... When he says, "Watch a tutorial or two, and then build something on that." like with the "Donut Tutorial"... DO NOT just build what the tutorial gave as an example... like that d*mn donut. INSTEAD, build something LIKE that tutorial showed you how to build. The donut started with a torus, and eliminated the default cube, light, and camera first off... SO go ahead... or even figure out how to HIDE the light and camera, and delete the cube... Then take a minute and a piece of paper, and roughly sketch out something YOU CAN MAKE from the torus... and make THAT... literally ANYTHING EXCEPT the donut is a good option. I watched the donut tutorial, and made a ring-cake instead, complete with a platter (roughly bronze)... icing, decorations and toppings, and then I figured out how to cut a slice out... complete with fluffy cake in the showing sides... AND that drove me just as close to "damned crazy" as I've been in a long time, for about 3 or 4 days... SO... why drive yourself bordering on NUTS over a single tutorial to do ANYTHING BUT the tutorial project??? It FORCES you to think on your feet... to answer questions for yourself if you possibly can... AND to experiment. I farted around for hours at a time, and then went outside to do just about anything BUT mess with the computer for a while because I was struggling... I probably cranked out 100 cakes before I was happy with even one of them... BUT every time I "closed without saving"... I'd learned something. I'd built on what the tutorial had shown me, and I'd remembered some vital step that I'd screwed up... I'd found a new way to screw up... BUT I LEARNED FROM IT... AND I began (from DAY 1) thinking for myself, figuring things out instead of blindly following "step by step"... I BUILT something... It wasn't particularly great... It looked like the kind of cake you'd expect a 12 year old kid to make with a box-mix... BUT IT DID in point of fact look like a ring-cake. It had icing "drizzled" over it with coconut flakes(-ISH) sprinkled over the top, and strawberries even gooey with syrup (sorta) arranged around it... A slice was finally taken out and laid on a dish near it, with a (UV-sphere) sloppy scoop of ice cream of unknown (and probably impossibly magical) flavor and color... I couldn't (at the time) figure out a "good" way to slip the strawberry on my "piece" down onto the dish, so it had a case of "anti-gravity ACTIVE"... but... I had my cake... I had topping (like the tutorial and then some)... I had icing/frosting (like the tutorial and then some)... I EVEN had platter and plate that the tutorial did NOT include... entirely "figured out"... probably not the way you'd be instructed... BUT they were there. I even had Ice Cream by the SCOOP... on my own recognizance... ...AND when I finally got a half-way decent animation sequence rendered with strawberry havoc raining down on the thing, I felt like I'd friggin' SUMMITTED EVEREST!!! For me, only about the first week had me fuming to the point of "ready to throw the g** d*** computer out the g** d*** window"... I've dared (since) to dabble in more and more complicated and elaborate things along with the tutorials I do, but I'm comfortable in the fact that I CAN remember to save frequently, and set up those extra "backup files" in the preferences... I dove right in and started farting with the file paths for render cache, the architecture of my system, and outputs as well as resource files for importing... all of it... right off... AND just now, I'm developing a few collections of resources on my own just for appending to other files so that when I DO build something kind of cool from some tutorial in the future, I have a place to keep it and never bother downloading "that particular thing"... I can just "mark as asset" and have it ready at hand whenever I need or want... I may even be able to sell or trade out sooner rather than later... SO don't JUST follow the tutorials to the letter. Watch them and find anything "roughly similar" to build SO YOU LEARN THE SAME LESSONS but also so you THINK ON YOUR OWN... answer the harder questions... develop some of your own "style" and "work flow"... You're going to have to make those choices sooner or later, no matter what. You might as well, LEAN INTO IT, and start some development NOW... while you're building and growing in the software, rather than wait until you've finished "All the tutorials you should need" and still have NO FRIGGIN' IDEA what you want to do with all that... or you're not even sure what you know how to do... Limbo SUCKS... Trust me. I've been there, "Staring down the great white bull" as Hemingway called it, many MANY times in my life. It's not a place I like to go "unarmed"... ...AND for those who don't (or haven't yet) read Hemingway... His "Great White Bull" was the blank page in a typewriter... waiting for a story when he sat down and had no idea what to write about, let alone how to articulate it into a story at all... NOTHING kills inspiration quicker than the question, "Okay, so what do I want to do now?"... be it in front of a blank page in a typewriter, staring at an easel with a blank canvas or with an empty sketch-pad on your knee, or in front of a screen with a default cube, light, and camera that you don't really need "clouding the view"... ;o)

What field of 3D did you decide to go into at first (ex: ArchViz, Product Viz, Character Design, Concert Aniamtion, etc, etc 3. How long did it take for you to put together a decent showreel/portfolio to show potential clients
Everyone have at least 10 mins, so yes, use Blender every single day, even with just 10 mins. NOw i work with it full time ;)

AlI the advice you give here, Ducky, is right on target. Thank you. I think your first point is hugely important: start with short projects, not too far beyond your skill level, that allow you to accomplish something during the learning session. This is actually an important element in learning theory. If the learner wraps up a learning task with a sense of accomplishment, progress is quicker and the learner is more likely to stick to it in the long run.
Some how I forgot this concept when I first started learning Blender, and I wasted a lot of time tackling large projects that were beyond my skill level, and getting obsessed with some detail for hours. I finally became willing to delete everything and start over with "Basic Blender Projects." This is when I finally started making progress. I've since gone back to some of those abandoned projects with better skills and a fresh eye to find that what once seemed like unsolvable problems are now quite easy for me. Also, when you get stuck, delete and start over. You will approach the subject differently next time around, or something will occur to you that will make the next attempt more successful.
Also, commit to learning one new keyboard short cut a day, or you will end up learning a limited set of shortcuts, and never learn others that would give you so much more flexibility. Have fun

I used Maya for 10+ years. And that helped me learn Blender about 2 years ago but I really think the quality of Blender tutorials is outstanding and simply unmatched when compared with other communities like Maya, Max, Houdini, C4D - trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=blender%20tutorial,c4d%20tutorial,maya%20tutorial,3dsmax%20tutorial,houdini%20tutorial - This + 2.8 + eevee + its gltf support was the main reason I decided to choose Blender instead of Cinema4D or Houdini. I was just thinking this the other day. There's a wealth of tutorials online, so it's hard to decide which ones to go with and what flow to follow. Very easy to burnout if you're basically watching the same tutorial over and over from different people masked as something unique you want to learn.
your tutorials are best Ducky. I agree with your advises and i want to add another point too. you dont have to take Blender course, u can take a course about Art and Art Composition instead of blender course. all about what you can make is 70% of Art, 30% of Blender. This will be better about your Creativity.

I recommend if anyone wants to start with the dount, watch the series until the middle, and try to start without watching, if you did just good then blender is for you, if not then it hard for you specially if didn't train every day.

This is exactly what I've been doing. A little bit of everything. From sculpting to hard surface. I'm still terrible at animation and compositing and need to get better at texturing within blender without relying on external resources. At this stage it feels like it will never be more than a hobby but it would even be cool to work on something for free.

Love the way you structure your Vids - Would love to get into more Particle Animation (Explosions and Melting and Running water). Old but good video thanks. Slowly getting comfortable with modeling . One thing that wasnt clear is how "mark sharp" , "edge crease", mark seam & bevel weight work when used properly That would make a helpful video for sure . CHeers
Great advice. Learning Blender has been on my agenda for a couple of years. I had made the mistake of watching tutorial videos that assumed the viewer had the basics under control Without the prerequisite knowledge, and a comfortable understanding of Blender's workflow concepts, I would quickly feel overwhelmed & loose interest Your video has given me some hope for success in my quest, but my first headache is finding a working non-glitchy driver for the Nvidia video card from hell that I inherited

I had blender downloaded for about 6 months, I used it the day I got it, gave up, came back 6 months later, and now I'm actually really good. The only real limitation at this point is my hardware. Yeah, I still watch material tutorials and stuff like that. But I never just "do the tutorial"

Can confirm. I'm only 1 month into the learning process of Blender. So far it has all been RUclips learning and it all began heavily at the basics. I never through I'd be making the things I am so quickly.

i heard a saying from the NFL head coaches. instead of trying to outsmart the other team's game plan just K.I.S.S. which means (Keep It Simple Stupid) I have gravitated to the mini short videos as after doing BG's Donut i tried some of his other stuff, which He is a good teacher but the models were just too advance for me at the time. I started watching 3D Ducky and i'm glad that it has the same philosophy.

I always stumble into the tutorial trap and at the end of the day I got nothing done myself.
Made a database with over 100 shortcuts, which I can search in. I guess most of them won't I be using until weeks from now.
I Even prepared reference images in Photoshop for modelling my Canon Eos 80D (I'm a photographer and it's my every day workhorse).
At least I have lots of knowledge how to compose and se lights etc.
But placing things in Blender is so hard, if you always have those fancy complicated scenes in mind.
For now I have decided to get most of my input from tutorials from Grant Abbitt and Imphenzia, who both make great content with low poly models.
Maybe that's the way to start and improve. We will see. ;)

nah it is not boring i just want to create scenes.. i do not have two screens but i have an old laptop and i use that to watch the tutorial.... and nop i think two to three weeks is enough if you are interested. i loved drawing when i was a kid and situations in life and always stumble upon some giant bolder when i wanted somethin in life.. and now i came across this and i think i can do something better about it. =) i want to create a small scenes on this software and perhaps teach as well.. at present i am currently 1 on the scale of 1 to 10, where 0 is nothing and 1 is something. :D but i am trying to create cars and animation into the scense by creating loop. I loved you neon sign lesson. Love you sir. you are amazing. pity we are far if we were closer could have learned and create some small stories but i love your channel. =)

I think it's important to create a little text file with notes about the shortcuts you find super useful, but always forget!
I know this is an old upload... BUT I want to help add a little clarity to one of the points about "Do something every day"... I really think it's a point that gets "skipped over" frequently, and it WILL really help you (reader) through the learning...
When he says, "Watch a tutorial or two, and then build something on that." like with the "Donut Tutorial"... DO NOT just build what the tutorial gave as an example... like that d*mn donut.
INSTEAD, build something LIKE that tutorial showed you how to build. The donut started with a torus, and eliminated the default cube, light, and camera first off... SO go ahead... or even figure out how to HIDE the light and camera, and delete the cube... Then take a minute and a piece of paper, and roughly sketch out something YOU CAN MAKE from the torus... and make THAT... literally ANYTHING EXCEPT the donut is a good option.
I watched the donut tutorial, and made a ring-cake instead, complete with a platter (roughly bronze)... icing, decorations and toppings, and then I figured out how to cut a slice out... complete with fluffy cake in the showing sides... AND that drove me just as close to "damned crazy" as I've been in a long time, for about 3 or 4 days...
SO... why drive yourself bordering on NUTS over a single tutorial to do ANYTHING BUT the tutorial project???
It FORCES you to think on your feet... to answer questions for yourself if you possibly can... AND to experiment. I farted around for hours at a time, and then went outside to do just about anything BUT mess with the computer for a while because I was struggling... I probably cranked out 100 cakes before I was happy with even one of them... BUT every time I "closed without saving"... I'd learned something. I'd built on what the tutorial had shown me, and I'd remembered some vital step that I'd screwed up... I'd found a new way to screw up... BUT I LEARNED FROM IT...
AND I began (from DAY 1) thinking for myself, figuring things out instead of blindly following "step by step"... I BUILT something...
It wasn't particularly great... It looked like the kind of cake you'd expect a 12 year old kid to make with a box-mix... BUT IT DID in point of fact look like a ring-cake. It had icing "drizzled" over it with coconut flakes(-ISH) sprinkled over the top, and strawberries even gooey with syrup (sorta) arranged around it... A slice was finally taken out and laid on a dish near it, with a (UV-sphere) sloppy scoop of ice cream of unknown (and probably impossibly magical) flavor and color... I couldn't (at the time) figure out a "good" way to slip the strawberry on my "piece" down onto the dish, so it had a case of "anti-gravity ACTIVE"... but... I had my cake... I had topping (like the tutorial and then some)... I had icing/frosting (like the tutorial and then some)... I EVEN had platter and plate that the tutorial did NOT include... entirely "figured out"... probably not the way you'd be instructed... BUT they were there. I even had Ice Cream by the SCOOP... on my own recognizance...
...AND when I finally got a half-way decent animation sequence rendered with strawberry havoc raining down on the thing, I felt like I'd friggin' SUMMITTED EVEREST!!!
For me, only about the first week had me fuming to the point of "ready to throw the g** d*** computer out the g** d*** window"... I've dared (since) to dabble in more and more complicated and elaborate things along with the tutorials I do, but I'm comfortable in the fact that I CAN remember to save frequently, and set up those extra "backup files" in the preferences... I dove right in and started farting with the file paths for render cache, the architecture of my system, and outputs as well as resource files for importing... all of it... right off... AND just now, I'm developing a few collections of resources on my own just for appending to other files so that when I DO build something kind of cool from some tutorial in the future, I have a place to keep it and never bother downloading "that particular thing"... I can just "mark as asset" and have it ready at hand whenever I need or want... I may even be able to sell or trade out sooner rather than later...
SO don't JUST follow the tutorials to the letter. Watch them and find anything "roughly similar" to build SO YOU LEARN THE SAME LESSONS but also so you THINK ON YOUR OWN... answer the harder questions... develop some of your own "style" and "work flow"... You're going to have to make those choices sooner or later, no matter what. You might as well, LEAN INTO IT, and start some development NOW... while you're building and growing in the software, rather than wait until you've finished "All the tutorials you should need" and still have NO FRIGGIN' IDEA what you want to do with all that... or you're not even sure what you know how to do...
Limbo SUCKS... Trust me. I've been there, "Staring down the great white bull" as Hemingway called it, many MANY times in my life. It's not a place I like to go "unarmed"...
...AND for those who don't (or haven't yet) read Hemingway... His "Great White Bull" was the blank page in a typewriter... waiting for a story when he sat down and had no idea what to write about, let alone how to articulate it into a story at all... NOTHING kills inspiration quicker than the question, "Okay, so what do I want to do now?"... be it in front of a blank page in a typewriter, staring at an easel with a blank canvas or with an empty sketch-pad on your knee, or in front of a screen with a default cube, light, and camera that you don't really need "clouding the view"... ;o)
