I'm having trouble extruding it up and scaling it. It doesn't all move uniformly when I extrude it nor when I try to scale it in as the bottle curves up. Can you help me? P.S. What are the shortcuts you used to select the row of faces on top of the bottle as well as the all the top edges? I can just manually shift click and select them all but it'd be much nicer to know your shortcut if possible. Thanks!

Also, I do not have "Mental ray" either (I'm assuming that may be why I do not have the "mia_.." material). And finally, I believe when you go into "render Settings" you have "Commons" "Quality" "Configuration" etc. I only have "Commons" is there a reason behind that as well? Well a lot of questions :-) Here we go : 1.Mental Ray is a plugin that you need to download and install ( www.autodesk.com ) Here are instructions : mhtutorialsruclips.net/user/201507/04/q-i-cant-find-mental-ray-in-autodesk-maya/ Once it is installed you need to activate it in the plugin manager. With that done you now have Mental Ray and the MIA material 2.I render in mental Ray, that is why I have more options. Once you have completed step 1 you will have the same. Mike

Questions: Do you have to look at the keyboard when deciding what tool to use or do you have a hand position that makes it easier to remember where all the keys your most likely to use are ? When I have to control or shift anything, I feel I need to look down so I was wondering what your set up is.
+VandalVortex Yes, I constantly repeat commands ( and some people find that annoying ) but I do that exactly for the reason you mentioned. As for looking at the keyboard, not really. But I have been sitting behind a keyboard since 1983 :-)
+Zhao Jack When you select the top face and hit extrude you use W to pull up, R to scale to make it narrower. Then when you hit G you reapeat the last command ( extrude ) and you use W and R again

Hi at 2:26 what's he saying? g to repeat? if i press g, nothing happens but show me "result: scale" on the bottom right, unfortunetly I'm allready stuck with that issue
If pressing 'g' doesn't repeat for you, you can still move along the tutorial by repeating the step shown. ie in the case of extruding you would simply press ctrl+e (or manually select extrude) wherever Mike presses 'g'. Hope that helps!
you will need mental ray, download it and enable it in the plugin manager (windows-setting- plugin manager). Also, if you have Maya 2017 you won't have the mia material for some time, because mental ray isn't in Maya anymore, and you'll have to wait until they update their software for Maya 2017
Awesome tutorial yet again. I've got a weird problem though... after I render, my bottle and lights all look great but my label won't show up. Its just a black square. Any ideas?

I have found it out sir, if u want to extrude in row, Do like Hermes did, Extrude a bit, and then extrude it again, you will get multiple subdivisions after it, what u said "rows".
What if your logo is not perfectly squared? For example a rectangle? If you'd go with this lambert, you will see the ugly grey where the rectangle logo is transparent.

Hey, Mike, I have a question. Why does my maya 2016 work differently than yours? Also mine is missing some things that yours has, such as the mesh tabs. Whenever i tried to scale the edges it scaled the entire bottle. Also, whenever i clicked on the cylinder polygon tool it opened a pre-made cylinder for me. Please help me and thanks.
+Nick Mill Nick, to start with. Did you install any Service Packs onto Maya 2016 ? ( I have ) That may explain some of the differences. Secondly, make sure you dont have Maya LT instead of Maya. Lastly, to avoid the pre -made cylinder go to Create - Polygon primitives - Interactive creation and turn it on.
Everything ok but the label is stretched on the end of both left and right side. In uv editor it shows me that the shells are more thinner when it comes to the edge. I saw some similar tutorial in 3ds and the guy was using Unfold option (though in Maya there is a tool with the same name but works differently, like for other purposes). In 3ds this option optimized shells in such a way that they were all the same width. After that he exported to psd, prepared label on the shell, imported it and stretching was no longer exist. Is there any possibility to do this optimized/unfolded shells in Maya? I couldn't find any clear answer and I feel lost...

cylindrical mapping i'm ok with but i have a problem with wood textures. when i put the wood texture on the cylinder the texture doesn't "fit", there's a visible line between flats (top and bottom) and round side. is there a tutorial that explains that or can somebody help me out?
+Christian Malle Christian, would will need a different wood texture for the top and bottom ( as in real life ) and then work on your color map in for example Photoshop to hide those seams

+Christian Malle Christian, select a surrounding edge at the bottom ( out of sight ) and cut the edges there. Then do a Planar projection from the top and make sure you have two UV shells. One for the bottom and one for the top. Unwrap the one on the top. This should avoid stretching of the texture

Hi Mike, another great tutorial and exactly what I'm doing at the moment, saved me time on the inside of the bottle, genius, can't believe I've been drawing the inside too! I'm following the technique of UV mapping the label on a slightly tapered bottle but the circular image I'm using is getting heavily squashed horizontally, any ideas? Thanks

I´ve downloaded the .mel files (mia_materials) and put them into \documents\maya\2017\scripts\ !!! Then I try to import them in hypershade or add them as an ordinary material but they won´t appear...thanx a lot for your work

I cannot for the life of me get mental ray to work... I do *not* have that option in the "windows > settings/preferences > plug-in manager" for mayatomr.mll which apparently gets mentalray to work. And I downloaded the plug-in, which I guess I need to extract to another folder, but it *doesn't* extract when I click "ok" to extract! Ahhh......

Hello sir. i'm kinda new in maya and i have learned many things thanks to you. i have done this tutorial and i've got same result except one thing and it is lable. This is my little work and the Error in the bottom. postimg.org/image/atoteqil5/ The jpg file loads fine when i place it in file location field. But i can't see it in viewport 2.0 while hardware render is on, and also when I begin a render, MentalRay comes back with an error relating to the file location or subtype. Any idea what's wrong? No Sir. i'm not that noob =]. File is still in it's location. i also tried to copy the file in some other locations and changed the address. but still not working. i guess the problem is related to my mental ray stuff. postimg.org/image/i0xg0axlz/ i had problem with finding and installing the main mental ray as you can see in the image above. But finally the last one, was the correct one. well... i'm new in maya. Maybe i need to uninstall Maya and all stuffs and re install it plus the correct mental ray. for some reason, after I extrude the edge of the plane at 13:22, moving the edges makes the whole plane move up. Pretty weird.

If your render turns out totally black it is a well know problem with mental Ray in Maya 2016 that can be fixed with a Service Pack install

At 9.40 you "reselected faces" while your cursor was off the model...how did you do that...?

OK, I understand. In this case you will have to tweak, unwrap and adjust your UV's to get a proper look and feel

Hi Mike, another great tutorial and exactly what I'm doing at the moment, saved me time on the inside of the bottle, genius, can't believe I've been drawing the inside too! I'm following the technique of UV mapping the label on a slightly tapered bottle but the circular image I'm using is getting heavily squashed horizontally, any ideas? Thanks

Mike Hermes There are 4. But when I go into face selection mode and select a face, it's like a spear and it selects every face in that angle, through the top. Sorry, I'm new to Maya and 3d modeling in general.

The shelf "Polygons" has items that cannot be read.
The shelf will only display the items before the first unreadable item it finds.
If you start Maya and save this shelf then you will lose the unreadable items. This will happen automatically if you have your preferences set to save the shelves on exit.

I´ve downloaded the .mel files (mia_materials) and put them into \documents\maya\2017\scripts\ !!! Then I try to import them in hypershade or add them as an ordinary material but they won´t appear...thanx a lot for your work

I cannot for the life of me get mental ray to work... I do *not* have that option in the "windows > settings/preferences > plug-in manager" for mayatomr.mll which apparently gets mentalray to work. And I downloaded the plug-in, which I guess I need to extract to another folder, but it *doesn't* extract when I click "ok" to extract!

Hello sir. i'm kinda new in maya and i have learned many things thanks to you.
i have done this tutorial and i've got same result except one thing and it is lable.

The jpg file loads fine when i place it in file location field. But i can't see it in viewport 2.0 while hardware render is on, and also when I begin a render, MentalRay comes back with an error relating to the file location or subtype.
Any idea what's wrong?

No Sir. i'm not that noob =]. File is still in it's location. i also tried to copy the file in some other locations and changed the address. but still not working.

i had problem with finding and installing the main mental ray as you can see in the image above. But finally the last one, was the correct one. well... i'm new in maya.
Maybe i need to uninstall Maya and all stuffs and re install it plus the correct mental ray.
