After three years of modeling experience, I thought I could do hands. Yet after several hours of rigging and deformers and whatnot, here I am, having to cut the hands off of the base mesh and redo everything. Serves me right for not watching this beforeHAND
"Didn't look at reference" -- no, but you have internalised the anatomy of the hand to a tee. Totally awesome. Thanks for the vid! Will need to learn some Maya keybinds to fly through the controls like you did, too!!
It's so hard to find good tutorials online. Usually the hosts spend too much time on the intro and its gets to the 10 minute mark before I get to the answer I wanted all the while the person making it thinks they're a comedian waiting to be discovered. This is a really good one. Props to you.
@@ornitorrincoc1borgue767 Because modeling in every program is the same. The only differences are hotkeys and things like render engines, but the workflow is all the same.

At 27:17 you forgot to mention that you deleted the faces on the right and left. When you came to subdivide later, your "arm" gonna look like a diamond if you haven´t deleted the two faces.
Hey first of all thank you for the video, you are a great modeler. I have a question, how did you select all the finger faces in minute 7:06? You probably used a keyboard shortcut but I don't know it
+Michael Tompkins Sorry about that, you can use X, C, or V hotkeys to snap to Grid, Curve/Edge, Vertex respectively. An easy way to move and snap is to select the move tool (W), then press and hold (V) and use press and hold Middle Mouse Button while moving. This will snap to the closest vertex.
Hi, how did you move without mouse button at 26:11? I clicked the square and drag, but only the selection marquee came out and the vertex did not move. What's the trick here?
The tool is called "Multi-Cut Tool", under Mesh Tools Menu. The one next to it is the "Poly Cut Faces Tool", it's not in Maya 2016 menus anymore, but I moved it over from my Maya 2015 Shelf by copying the entry using Notepad.
this is definitely going to help me for my college project, I HATE hands and the way they showed us to do it but with this tutorial im pretty sure itll help a lot and be faster ! Good job
You need to use the Extrude function. It can be found in the Polygon Shelf or the Edit Mesh Menu or by holding Shift+Right Click and selecting Extrude. knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya-lt/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2015/ENU/MayaLT/files/Polygon-selection-and-creation-Extrude-a-polygon-face-edge-or-vertex-htm.html
At about 19:00 you have made new edge loops and show them wrapping all the way around top and then the inside as well. I did the cuts the way you showed I paid attention to the verts as well but I get single face or whole hand. no new loops - how can I check this? This is a great tutorial too but I did some thing !
yeah dude your tutorial is good and i know we have the slow and paise ability but you do really need to explain which mode you are going into, vertex, face etc
I try to explain as much as I can. Sometimes I think some things are self explanatory, and I skip them to keep the videos relatively short, but I know I need to do better in my explanations. Tutorials are just a hobby :)
its definitely not a video for beginners (sorry...the pros like Raxs would say this is very simple, but its not when you are just starting to learn) and thats probably why you don't mention every step, you go fast, but still great video with good tips.
Hey.. 27:47, I don't know how to change the rectangular parallelepiped like that. I pressed the 2 key and 3 key, but it was changed something strange.. How can I solve these problems?
Iam missing the whole thing that happens around 14:20. I get that you erase the finger and duplicate it back but how you ajust the pivot to that vertex and then just duplicate the fingers where you want them.
How do yo do when you have the first loop selected and then select automatically the next loop? Like you did between 23:13 and 23:15? Sorry for my english btw.
Hey , Awesome tutorial! But I have a quick question. What do you say @23:10 to expand the selection area? Haha, I just cant understand ( And I don't know the short cut ) Thanks in advance, Hope to see more tutorials soon
how can i make only "line view"? cause you used a keyboard shortcut and didnt tell what it should be done at the moment... I'm telling about 2:21. Please help :)
Great video thanks! Btw, how can I move fingers and wrist? I'm working on modeling gloves, but when I'm trying to rig it and move fingers, it keeps break mesh.. 😢
Damn son! Well done. I always get the hand right....eventually. But you did it so fast. I’ll definitely learn and remember the steps to make hands *your way* . Good job man 👍
Hi, how did you select the faces on the side of the palm in top view before extruding them to make the fingers? I can only switch to persp view and select them but you seemed magically selected them for extrusion. How did you make it?
thank you for this tut! I not only learned how to model a hand, but learned a lot more about the mesh tools/modeling toolkit as well; I've hardly been using it before now.
Your workspeed and the background music give this video a veeery serious vibe. It's feels like a mission briefing. "do this right or you're fucked" I like it though and I'm very impressed by your demonstration!
youre work flow is a bit fast, but thank you for this. im trying to create a simple hand with good topology for a rig, would you say you could use this in a standard rig? thank you!
Hotkey is Shift+Alt+D. As you work, history starts to build up on your model, great for going back and changing some things, but it can also cause crashes and will slow maya down if the history stack gets too long. I clear history as often as I can remember. Also, save often.

By far the best hand tutorial out there. ...or at least, one of my personal favorites.

What did you do exactly at 14:12 because you say you deleted but the wire frame is still present, am i missing something? (most likely)
Got lost in 14:15! How did you do exactly do the shift+delete and still got the model retained?
I know this comment is 3 years old but I just made a duplicate and deleted the finger from one and the rest from the other one
At 27:17 you forgot to mention that you deleted the faces on the right and left.

+Desaturateful Yes, you are right. I deleted faces on each side to make a cube into a tube.
oh really great question.. Thank you sir @Desaturateful

He deleted the faces on both sides then pressed 3 to smooth.
i didn't get the final touches, why we should make an edge flow in fingers, also is it wrong to leave triangles in model!!
The final edge flow helps with how the geometry will move when rigged. Triangles are usually avoided as they will pinch when subdividing the model.
