i love tutorials like this, sometimes it can be the simplest things like bottle caps that are the trickiest to get right, i love the use of ngons as well. great tut..
I've been searching through tutorials all day, and this has helped me so much! I'm actually creating a pillar, which needs fluting and filleting, and I just couldn't figure out the best way to create the shapes. Thank you so much, brilliant tutorial!
To SPLIT POLYGON : Hold down SHIFT and Right Click, options will pop up.. Choose SPlT > SPLIT POLYGON TOOL, then hover your mouse over the little Box and release, and the options will come up.
I don't understand how you found SplitPolygonToolOptions. How do you use the command line? Where is the SplitPolygonToolOptions? How do I add it? I'm new with Maya so it's really hard to keep up when you skip important steps.
You created an Ngon on a curved surface, a big nono. I would suggest that if you want that part done properly you should subd for more resolution and then use the correct shapes that make the bottlecap the shape it is instead of squares.
But it apparently comes right from the Coca-Cola marketing department itself, surely they must know what they're doing? I really can't see it being much of a big deal or having any profound effect on rendering.
I thought models with n-gons made it considerably more difficult to UV and texture, which is why we are told to avoid them? I was generally taught n gons are a big no no, and in my (limited I will admit) experience that was mostly why n gons should be avoided.
I wish I could get my smooth tool to work this well! I created a fighter aircraft and as soon as I hit smooth everything gets way to round. Even the wings round off when they are supposed to have straight edges. I don't know how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated..!
FrakU2 The reason why that is happening is due to the lack of edges to smooth upon. Create more edges along the edge of the wings and it will have a far greater look and feel, and it won't smooth it too much ;)
I don't understand how you draw the polygon. When I select cylinder, a preset sized cylinder pops up. There's no way top actually draw it out. Please help.
+James Odom go to the Create tab at the top left of Maya, scroll down to Polygon Primitives and check the box that says Interactive Creation. Then the next time you create a polygon, you will draw it like was done in the video.
I guess you already know this now, but to everyone else reading, you can have Maya for free, legally, for three years. Just state it's for studying when downloading it from their website.
"and then I'll make these tiny cuts 32 times all around the model" Exactly how much brainpower does it take to only do a 1/32nd of a model and then special duplicate it 32 times?
Damn maya looks so hard to model compared to max, there's even no Connect/Ring tool to make these Split Poly in a second. + No Procedural modelling ( max is semi-procedural if used alot of "Edit Poly" modifiers ) :/ Edit: Its just me or Maya is literally an Houdini wanna be? The UI, the modelling etc looks so copy paste.

No matter the rationale, I shiver every time I see an Ngon.
Fantastic. Thank you

Jordan Moss might look good in the view port, but uncool render artifacts.

somebody knows as it everything together allocates with time not separately each part? as to make it in cinema 4d
when i select on polygon maya selects both top and bottom polygons automatically. i can't select just one poly sometimes? do you why?
did you get the solution?
Young2Media yea i diid , in preferences selection area.
Hey...nice tutorial. can you make another tutorial on how to model a body lotion container...wanna use it for my coursework..thanks
Thank you very much.

In a professional setting it's useless.

Can you make a video explaining that? If not, please shut up.
