*Running into a few problems while building Jeep XJ*--- Tim's Build Pt.1
New MERCH: www.thefabrats.com
We had a fan contact us wondering if Paul could do a little work on his XJ. He drove all the way from Colorado to have Fab Rats upgrade his ride! Once Paul got started he quickly realized that a few crucial parts were the wrong size or missing, so Tim went on the hunt to find the right stuff while Paul did what he could on the build........Check it out!
Make sure to follow along with us as we build and fabricate cool stuff!!

Sorry it took a couple of days to comment. Just to let everyone know I knew there were going to be things that I would have to get. It was the things I thought I had covered that turned out to be not quite right that were the PITA. Paul was able to get it figured out quickly and we sourced most of the parts a couple of hours away, three trips though. Iron Rock actually got the bushings overnight delivered to middle of nowhere southern Utah so kudos to them for that. Paul is one of the best fabricators I have ever met and deserves every bit of praise I could give him. Just a little back story, Papa Dar and I lived next to each other (we still own the house and use it as a vacation home) and went to school together when we were young. I was able to meet Paul thru him after I saw Paul on MORR. And bonus for me, I got to meet Matt on my last night there when Paul was working on his transmission. And a shout out to Michelle for doing some of the best editing work on RUclips!
It was fun having you here!! Hope to see you soon!
It's amazing what $5-8k upgrades does in an XJ, pretty much gives you Rubicon-like performance. Can't last forever though, they get more rare every year.
Amazing skills!! You are one good mechanic, man!! Respect!! Thanks!!
Nice to see this. I finally got an XJ about a month ago to accompany my LJ. Besides a budget boost the previous owner installed, it's a pretty stock Cherokee. Not sure what direction I want to take it in, so it's fun to see videos like these 👍
Love to watch your fabrications, Paul. Such a positive, can-do attitude! Feel like I'm sitting in the shop with you...
Thanks for watching!
That glorious smell in gear oil is phosphorus pentasulfide. I used make the oil additive that all heavy gear oil uses to keep it from breaking down under high pressure and heat. All gear and motor oils have it in them but gear oil has way more in it.
Happy Thanksgiving folks and thanks again for a look into your lives. I love seeing Papa Dar in his chair! When he's there I know at least some things in the world are as they need to be. Stay well folks.
Really like your work. When you no how to set a rear end like u do that is a pro, and you are one...
I'd like to see the pattern as well as the backlash.
I used the RC track bar as it has a clamp sleeve adjustment. Didn't like the ones you have to drop an end to adjust.
Great job Paul. Can't wait for part 2.
I love going back over these gems.
Glad you found parts for everything.
Nice to see some TMR products ! I've built many xj's best ever is when the rear leaf shackle bolts to chassis actually come out .
These guys have been awesome to work with!!👍🏻
What's with the wood chips under the lift? Lol, I worked for the Utah Shakespearean Festival building the sets for a couple years and most of the scenery sets have a steel frame. We had lots of mini fires as well from welding around saw dust. It's always fun to watch y'all build.
Soak up leaked fluids. ;)
Every vehicle draws blood its like being in a brother hood ;-)))
Yep, my XJ just demanded 2 fingers. It got them, now I'm in a splint. Lol
Paul Nice Job . Can't wait to see the finsh product .
Michelle - What!? No cheers and applause when you got "spider gears" right!? Come on! You deserve SOMETHING!
That was my son.😉
@@FabRats I guess I need to pay better attention to who's behind the camera!
Can’t wait for part two
Nice looking job, your production and editing skills are starting to match your fabrication skills. Really enjoying your channel, thanks for posting.
I drove something to a shop for work once many years ago. It was an old Deutz tractor. Dad said to drive it there and walk back. They installed a loader frame on it. I was more than happy to walk the 5 miles home because that loader saved me a lot of work.
The world would be a much better place if more people had the demeanor of Paul. He always seems happy, upbeat, positive, and willing to bend over backwards to help folks.
He seems like a really cool guy
we had to use an air hammer to get most of my underneath off. but in the long run my XJ is running like a baby. did a 4" lift, put in a new swaybar, transmission mount, adjustable upper control arms, beefy lower control arms, adjustable trackbar, new steering stabilizer, 1.5" transfer case drop, replaced the front brakes, including the steering knuckle, (doing the rears this week). Im loving working on my XJ so much!
Of all the RUclips channels I'm subscribed to, 117 at the moment, I have like two or three I consider my favorites. I hit the jack pot, all three had a new video posted, this is one of my favorites.
This is great news! Glad you love it!!👍🏻
Being from Broomfield, CO., originally, know right where Aurora is. Went High School in Denver, college in Louisiana, military in Connecticut, police in Louisiana, retired in Philippines, respect Paul(even got same first name[had it first]) nice talent
Such a lucky guy!! I also live in Colorado, I’m 18 and just bought a nearly bone stock used xj, wish I could get some work done on it haha!! Great video and thanks for motivating me to save up my dang money!
Hello from Oklahoma! I'd love to get some Fab Rats work done on my tundra! Need to get it trail-ready. Might have to plan a trip with the family soon!
thank goodness for the Banana towers or I would not have found Fab Rats!
Poor guy thought he had everything needed... I've learned when building anything, that there's a good chance I'll find something not what I thought I'd be 😌...
he could of used my camper build for his XJ adventure with you all...lol Just remind him, it'll all be worth it when it's done & he's out wheel'n it 😁👍
Keep the tires aimed towards the ground &
your eyes upon the Lord...
I'm sure glad that you are a friend of Matt; hid site lead me to yours. I'm no gear head but I like how you do things that are easily understood. Great video! I also enjoy the smart allecky remarks; they make my day!!!
1992 XJ 8.5" long arm on 35's 456 gears
Paul,
I use the extra large Playtex gloves from the dollar store. I also use a sprinkle of baby powder in them it makes them slip on and come off without pulling a finger off so you can reuse them many times.
Thanks for your content it gives me something real to watch that is different each time ☺️👍
Thanks for the tips!👍🏻
Nice work bud! I'm working on an xj from the northeast so there's a little rust to help everything snap! I'm looking foward to part 2.
Wait not longer.......it’s already done.👍🏻 m.ruclips.net/video/w10VFfPw-YY/видео.html
Oh that Colorado. First I thought you were talking about Colorado City, Arizona and was thinking that's not that far away, only about an hour from Glendale.
Nice job as always, I am just amazed you can actually get any bolts out. I am used to it being so rusted you either snap them off or end up just burning them out. Must be nice to not have all the rust. Hope you and family stay safe and healthy. Pa Pa Dar should do a couple crusher videos would be fun to see it.
Between you and Matt and Casey I wonder how many XJ builds you have inspired, lol.
At least one from this guy lol
Don't for get Casey's off road recovery
Price of used XJ's has went up even more....
Yeah and it makes me wonder if there will be any XJs left for anyone else to buy. People will be looking for them nation wide.
Another great video Paul. Thanks for sharing this with me.
I sure miss these old fab rats videos! New ones are ok but the old ones rock
Best show on RUclips..u got mad skills brother lol
I watch Fab Rats, Matts Off Road Recovery, Also Trucker Josh a Canadian Trucker. You 3 are the best.
Thats a bit dramatic, he's sloppy. If you want to see real work go over to dirt lifestyle.
So you good job lady always old you doing God bless you and keep on going
Another great video Paul and thank you for sharing this with me.
I built a Ford 8.8 from a 96 Explorer in my garage. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. I did a truss and a detroit locker and the entire project cost me less than $900! Definitely worth getting rid of the Dana 35 that came with the Jeep.
If I ever have 1/10 of your mechanical ability or knowledge Ill be a happy man ! Great Stuff as always Paul and crew!
Seriously, I wish I knew a fraction of what he does.
Thats a neat idea.... working on viewer vehicles
HOW do you NOT like the way 90w smells?! I love it!
You should have your own cable show!
Paul,
I am pretty sure anyone who has ever worked in trucks for a living or for hobby, despises 90wt gear oil!
The question is, will you ever do another viewer build?😁 He should have trailered it in.
I still want him to help me do an LS swap in my WJ! :)
I'm bringing mine to him just so I can hang out in the shop and learn a thing or two!
I have had that track bar bolt break before if you come up from the bottom behind the bar with an angle grinder and a cut off wheel you can cut the bolt with little damage
to the diff
You made the work look's easy but it's not easy
I am totally addicted to your channel so please add more videos as soon as possible
Though I don't build off road rigs I've learned something new about the axles in those Jeeps. Good stuff as always!
I love the fact that the woman are in there helping, you know you have a keeper if there are oil underneath her nails too lol, even if it's holding the camera most of the time.
Track bar is upside down... Also the upper link can be rotated if you droop the axle down and detach from the diff ear. The shackles are boomeranged (spelling?) To allow clearance for the metal behind the shackle at full bump. Aka logo points to rear.
The worst for me was changing a set of gears that burned up in between heat race and the main event. Overcooked 90W at nuclear temps running down my arms was nasty, I smelled worse than a skunk for days, lol
nice build. No pattern ink on the ring gear?
I just love this channel
Keep em coming love ur build videos
heck yeah. i so need a shop to work in. i have a few things i want to do to my truck but i need to get the parts and material first as well.
Can't believe how easy you make it look. It's like this is boring, give me something challenging like a space station to work on.
Right on! Another Colorado boy, crazy hes from the same city as me🤙
Crazy how clean that XJ is!
You get it done man!
Ever since Matt and Casey came up with the rescue jeeps xj the price when up and cant find them anymore. 😥
And now showing the cool upgrades by fab rat's even less can find them xj's
just got an original owner 99 2door , 130k , maintenance records since new
zero rust . been looking forever for a 2 door !! $2500 . ding in hatch , locks glitchy , headliner of course . big plans !!
Looking forward to the Fab Rats' T shirts being back in stock! Inspiring work on the XJ!
Almost done! Thanks for your support!!
Was just mentioning on Casey’s Off Road Recovery channel about having homemade popcorn, and watching your channel, his channel and Matt’s Off Road Recovery on a Friday night. My day is complete!
Glad we could help your day out!👍🏻
@@FabRats since finding your channel I look forward to each and every video!
I seen people put them keepers back on, rare but some people do it
Thanks
I like that rolling table.
Those xj’s NOTORIOUS for the broken trac bar bolt, absolute shame
Happy Thanksgiving hope you had a wonderful day!!
Use the ash from the wood stove instead of sawdust. It absorbs better and doesn't catch fire
I love these build videos!
I'm just curious, Do you favor putting Chevy fronts vs Ford ? You are having way to much fun . Good video
EricO puts those little clips back on the wheel studs. Never know
I used to put them back on drums. Thought they might maintain braking power if a wheel came off on the road.
Change the oil filter adapter o rings while you are there!
Gonna do a 1 ton swap on my 94 grand V8 just collecting the lil bits Cherokee's look crazy with tons wheels sticking way out so mean in my opinion
You make it look so easy, when I know its not. Kinda wish I had a jeep..
This is getting pumped up to work on my ZJ 👌
Never fails you either have everything or parts missing or the wrong thing!
Every episode is getting better and better. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I want to see the setbacks on a Michigan Jeep.
Stripping every other bolt and finding out the frame is rusted through lol
@@314roberts Yeah, that's what happened on my Jeep, I had to CUT my leaf springs out down to the main eye bolts which I had to soak for 1 week and then finally remove them. Took me 1 month just to remove the suspension. I was able to repair rusted sections of the the frame.
Only thing worse than gear oil smell is diesel exhaust! Nice work!
So nice watching a mechanic on RUclips that knows what there doing and doesn't sound like they were born in a dishwasher
Impressive work Paul.
wow i wish you guys were my next-door neighbors would that ever be super
Hey I’m from Colorado and a viewer! (And subscriber of course) if my daughter and I make the drive can we make a video upgrading mine?? She’s 6 but can’t get enough of you she thinks you’re so funny! 😂 anyways great video!
Come on over!!👍🏻
do you charge extra if the customer "helps" LOL
Thanks for your videos! Regards from PuertoRico!
Love old XJ's and love your work, Paul. Excellent. =:-))
Awesome skills you have👍👍👍👍👍
Nice job! Drivin 10 hrs. at highway speed on new gears back home??? No break in required? I enjoy your videos
A rare case, where it is welcome for the customer, to bring bribes even while being on camera :-)
Way to complicated....but absolutely awesome.....god bless...keep them coming....you make it look easy
Plenty of Dew in the background 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love watching these builds
i see this is part 1, but like damn it takes me half a day to take apart my front and you guys are like doing all the suspension in an afternoon lol why am i so inefficient
"I think it's going to work" are words you never want to hear your mechanic say when the rig is on the lift with a bunch of its suspension parts laying on the ground.
I wouldn't be be a Jeep if none of the bolts had not busted off...lol...That lift looks like an IronRockOffroad Rock link...
Paul, looks like you have a new roommate 🤔🤨
Like Dars comment, could be here as long as my Jeep over there 😉😆
Good luck with the Jeep and the new roommate. Hope things go smoother from here on out.👍👍
I think it's the friction modifier that's the worst stink!
wait wait wait! so what you're saying is we can pay Paul in Mtn Dew!?
