The Parts Stores have FAILED us Once Again!!
New MERCH: www.thefabrats.com
We can't seem to catch a break with this build! As we try to finish up Tim's Jeep, we ran into a couple more problems with the parts, making it take an extra day than planned. Check out to see if we were able to locate the right part and send him on his way with an upgraded new ride!
Make sure to follow along with us as we build and fabricate cool stuff!!

Who cant love a garage with old office chairs for the elders to snooze in while the work is being done. Love it.
I really enjoy the longer build/rebuild videos. It's so interesting to see how people do certain things.
Thanks for watching!
I couldn't watch any videos at work this week so I had to wait until my day off. That was a fun week with Paul and his family. With all the editing for time you don't get to appreciate the time and attention to detail that went into the build. Thanks again! And it ran great all the way back to Colorado.
Come back and see us sometime!
Nice to see the kids learning, Paul even teaches metallurgy to his kids!
we like the way you explain things to your son, that's the sign of a super dad
You guys have such a good mix of instruction, humor, and problem solving. You obviously put a lot of time and thought into editing, captions, and overall flow. Plus, we love to hear Paul narrating and chatting with everyone.
I don't comment on youtube videos often, but y'all these videos are 👌
One day I hope to have a shop this size! In the meantime, I live vicariously through paul's projects. Thanks for simply walking through the projects as they happen. I seek out channels like this to watch so I can passively learn fabricating and vehicle tips/theory when not actually doing it myself.
Thanks for that awesome comment! It’s viewers like you that keep us going!👍🏻
Watching him set R&P he probably could do it blindfolded good job one maybe 2 shots excellent resets old shim stagger spot on ...
Well done, you not only upgraded his truck you made a friend for life!
Cheers from Tokyo!
Being a welder I can hear that welder is set perfect music to my ears, great job fab rats a joy to watch.
Love the videos, I’m amazed by how fast Paul is able to figure out what to do on these projects, makes it look so easy. This channel along with MORR are definitely my 2 current favorites, keep up the great work, it definitely doesn’t go unnoticed.
Thank you so much for those kind words! They also don’t get unnoticed.😁
@@FabRats love you guys and your friendly disposition. Extremely caring family. Thanks for the videos love them
That turned out to be quite the marathon.
It's a real pain in the ass when the parts are wrong, or missing. You wish you could have the person that messed it up there so they could see the problem they created.
Good job 👍👍
I love the fact that your entire family gets involved, the boys are already picking up the basics and Michelle is getting better with part names🤭😁😉
Another great build by Fab Rats! I especially like that you took the time to teach the youngster a few things along the way! Teach 'em young!
Great to see cool videos that are super clean, FabRats, Mats' Towing, and Casey. Cheers.
Didn’t Casey work for mat?
@@alexloera2013 Casey runs his own automotive repair/tow business. He's disappeared from Matt's videos. I guess there are some differences of opinions, sort of speak?
I ordered vacuum regulators for a Corvette. 2 weeks later I received a set of really nice mirrors.
That was a sharp looking XJ for having 300K miles on it! Great work on the lift and axle swap! 😎
Gas ramen noodles! 🤣😂 Had a similar experience 40 years ago on a hunting trip. Thanks for resurrecting that memory! 🥴
It's awesome seeing that kid in the shop watching and asking questions. That was me when I was little any time my dad worked on anything.
Same here and I've been fortunate (cursed) to know how to work on my own junk. But these skills will help us no matter what happens in this world.
Have been working by myself for a long time now, so I have to gravity bleed brakes when I work on them. I used to have a vacuum bleeder, but when I loaned it out, the guy never cleaned it when he was done with it. the next time I went to use it, it was junk. Been gravity bleeding ever since. Never had any issues with brakes when gravity bleeding. Seems faster to me too. Good stuff, looks like you really enjoy what you do. God bless, stay well.
I enjoy that the bay is a "family affair". Everyone's there, having fun, learning, and being together!
Agreed, it’d be like stepping in high cotton to be invited to show up with a 12-pack of Mountain Dew.
Watching a good mechanic move around a vehicle always thinking always watching is like watching a ballet dancer on stage.
Not sure if folk who don't do this sort of stuff realize just how difficult it is, when its made to look easy here. Have to say one of the best tools I ever bought was a vacuum type brake bleeding system, it saved hours and arguments with the 'assistant'.
Parts store stuffing up, never.
Don't feel too bad about it, they do exactly the same to us here in Australia
Ever since they took away the books and gave them all computers, part stores have never been the same.(probably showing my age now.)
Great job Paul, I am sure he will enjoy the upgrades for years to come.
Yeah and I'll bet if you came in for a common part, those guys behind the counter knew their stuff and 9 out of 10 times didn't even need to look in the book, unless it was for a price.
Back then there wasn`t so many variables. What always bothers me is when the parts guys dread having to look it up. It`s their job! I started in new car dealers, as a mechanic, in 1975.
@@REDMAN298 So you saw the variables that existed in American motors products (even some Lucas electrical) And the good old Ford "custom" label that meant it could have parts from 3 years ago or even for the next model year! And the weird High price GMs where the seat colour influenced a number of the unpainted dash parts!
Good to see you asking the young man questions get him thinking
These videos are heart warming, thanks for doing what you do.
Always a fan of Paul's stuff, great to see him help out a fan. It shows how much we as fans enjoy his work and videos. Driving 10 hours one way to get Paul's signature handiwork says a lot. Great to see the family involved and Papa Dar getting his much-needed rest.
What do you think caused it to go up and down?
Hitting rocks.
LOL priceless 😂.
Your boys would be better at running the parts store it sounds like. I love seeing kids in the shop and figuring it out. Even your wife is getting pretty good at it!
Good people right there
Little trick, freeze the carrier side in the freezer and heat up the bearings, one shrinks, bearings expand and makes a easier slip fit!!!
Paul's a BEAST! Great work, FabRats!
Great to see a great local Canadian company parts in your shop @0:38 mark. Tim & Mike are awesome guys!
They have been awesome to work with!!
@@FabRats indeed they are.
@@FabRats I live in Canada and still can't parts that fast
Teaching your young one some of the trade. Got his jeep fixed up pretty nice for him. Off roading and some deep snow.
Did you say Glendale? We spent a week there in 2011, hitting the National Parks. Loved it! Can't wait to go back. Sorry to see that the Buffalo Bistro has closed.
Prettiest little town in Southern Utah.👍🏻
If I was in southern Utah, I would definitely used Paul to work on my truck.
Not used him more like pay him to work on on it nothing's free in life
@@nathanhearld474 where I'm from that means paying him for his services.

I remember in the old days when it took a person with actual knowledge of cars to work in a parts store.... Now A days I have to find the part numbers and tell the teenage kid to go fetch them for me.. Way less returns and A LOT LESS aggravation on my part....
Amazing how much Paul knows. The entire Rats’ nest, young and old, are good people,
Yeah I have a friend that is a mechanic and he has the same problem with the parts house getting the wrong parts! Great job on the Jeep and sending a happy customer back to Colorado!
I love the videos! I was really hoping to see through some of the details like setting your crush sleeve on the front and where to set your pinion angle on the rear.
It's in all the books.
Great to see the kids in there with you learning. Kids today just don’t understand things because they don’t have parents teaching them how to stuff. It’s something they need to know so future generation can do things for their selves and know how to fix stuff when it’s broke. Great job!
And it's way better than trying to learn it in college or out of books.
@@phillipstoltzfus3014 definitely. Hand on is what I feel the beat way to learn
Paul, little tip for checking gear pattern... Take some white grease in a small can, with a lid, spray some orange or yellow paint in it and mix it up and brush it on the gears... Doesn't dry out like paint, wipes off, can reapply without build up... Used it for setting gears for 25+ years and don't forget to put the lid on the can...
Nice job. Getting to the point where I expect two trips to town if the one parts gal I know isn't working. I try to not even call if she is off, LOL.
So cool of you to do tht especially when we’re in the times we’re in much respect to fab rats aka Paul very cool.
I know, next day shipping in Wyoming is NEVER Next Day, it is Next Day Plus One or maybe Two Days.
Great Job. Love the 1 worker, 3 Supervisor ratio.
You are the man I aspire to be ...you're a very lucky person you got a very good family and friends
I can't believe I'm just now seeing this video but I was rolling seeing them guys just chilling in the recliner watching Paul work 🤣😂 with some fire 🔥 rolling in the furnace for sum good heat.... Wish I could be a part of it all, been watching for over a year I'd say atleast, but keep up the great work I love the trans am ya got I love the 67 and 68 Camaros most , more then the 69 a little but I love the firebirds of that era , sick find buddy glad ya got her ....
Great video , I love watching the “shop work” videos . Good looking Jeep too 👍. You inspire me to have more patience , and start learning to work on my truck and Jeep more . I’m gonna end up going in debt , I need a shop like this !!
At least the Jeep is done right even after the parts turned out wrong couple of times. Perseverance all important & Getting The Right Parts!
Great content and light narration. You are a pro in off road building.
I don't have any use for a 4x4 where I live so it's nice to see other people working on them. Great work.
Good job blending the music so that it doesn't take over you can still hear the shop sounds I like it.
"Pretty dang close on the pinion angle.....weld it!"
Hech yeah another day great video keep em coming glad the bushings came in
Nice job Paul.Going to be doing the exact same thing to my XJ this spring...
Any reports on his ride home? Good stuff, again...good to see your little man involved and asking good questions, it is great he is genuinely interested... few more years and you guys will be building his rig!
He made it safe and sound. With no troubles
@@FabRats and he didn't have to make a call....nice
Great Vid Paul. How you keep all that knowledge straight is amazing. Now there's a Jeep!
“ how the west was won “ is my all time fav movie , watched it over 5 times . All the best actors are in it , and filmed in a different aspect ration.
That was a great job on putting it all together for us to see. Keep up the great work.
Also another bit of info to go along with the gas noodles. If you ever have the idea to cool a hot can of beverage using propane. Dont, the propane somehow gets into the can. The now cold beverage tastes just like propane smells.
As a drive train mechanic it is surprising how often part stores give the wrong part honestly O'Reilly in salt lake has been the most reliable for me.
I know iron rock. They are 26 miles from me! They make great quality parts. It’s awesome I hear their name on the famous fab rats way over In Utah!
I had a Cherokee. Northeast pa. Everything needed a torch to remove it. EVERYTHING. Wheel bearings were a nightmare. I only kept it one winter. I loved it though
Awesome job brother 👍
He'll really enjoy his ride home in it...
Keep the tires aimed towards the ground and all eyes upon the Lord...
& Get out and enjoy God's country with someone you love 😁👍 my brothers and sisters
Thanks again for some great content. Keep at it guys 🛠
Thanks for watching!
Cool video!
Have Yukon 4.88 gears in my '19 4Runner. 10 hour drive is a helluva break in for those gears.
Awesome workmanship, I Truly enjoy your videos! Thanks you for sharing. Your T-Shirts are still out of stock let us know when you have more coming in.
Getting more tomorrow!!! Thanks so much for watching!!
dang, I bet you sleep well at night! When I get home from work the last thing I want to do is more work, and I do a desk job. thanks for the vids as always!
The original rear end had drum brakes and the 8.8 had disc’s. Same change I did in my 88 Cherokee. Did you have to change the master cylinder and proportioning valve for accommodate disc front and disc rear. I had to use a master cylinder for a 78 Mercury Marquee Brougham. It fit the booster perfectly and has nice big pistons in it for good fluid pressure and volume.
I'm amazed at how far your editing skills have come.
Typical workshop, one guy working and 5 watching. The mechanic is so thankful for the audience.
I remember a sign in an auto repair shop a few years ago... Something like this:
SHOP RATE: $50/hr
IF YOU HELP: $100/hr
@@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire I had it in my garage 70 years ago, in today's rates 50 an hour, 75 if you advise and 125 if you help. Cheers mate.
Great Work! You're Amazing!
This is like a valentine’s 🎉 day gift. And you can’t know why.
I have a hack n tap in my 01 Cherokee too and it vibrates also. Sucks. But that what ya get for opening your transfer case
Caliper hanging from hose... Waiting for everyone to freak out!
Steel brake line, itll be fine.
My feeling has been that if the hose is going to break when hanging the caliper from it, that means it probably needed to be replaced anyway. Better for it to break like that than when going down a steep hill.
I cringed when he let it hang there. Brake job faux-pas right there:))
@@jhooton75 the issue with that logic is, the damage happens inside the hose where you dont see it
once its been screeched like that and the inner rubber creates a flap you start having issues like "sticking" calipers or no brakes
One of the best looking Cherokee's I've seen!
55k subs! Good job for a lineman 👍
..LOOKIN' GOOD. STAY SAFE..
Awesome job!
Nice Job!
i like that pretty dang close another good one guys keep it up!!
Cool videos...maybe I'll find me a square body chevy and you can do some suspension upgrade on it...first got to find one first...lol. Like the work you do for people...keep it up. 👍
Tbh I don't know what's going on half the time but it's still interesting to observe.
Great job. It’s like you knew what you were doing, lol 🤙😎
that's awesome. if i ever get out that way i'd love to work on a project with y'all.
Awesome a job well done
I just so wished you were here in the UK mate & I would buy another XJ knowing we had someone that could fix it.
Hmmmm...methinks I need to buy an older XJ and drag it down south to have you do a little work on it for me! Good work and content here as always! You and Matt keep me entertained here through all the 'Rona stuff! Good people, doin good work. 👍👍
We appreciate you watching!👍🏻
My wife would ask. Well did you order the right part?
Lol I just did an 8.8 swap on my tj. 373 gears factory lsd and diskbrakes, super short sye from jb conversions and tom woods driveshaft. She’s never driven this good before for being 22 years old
We need more Paul's in this world.
You need to start charging rent for those chairs in your garage you'd be a rich man🤣 great video as always👍
No matter how well you prepare for what you need for modding an xj there's something your going run into or find in the process.
Awesome tires there too. :)
I'm just trying to figure out how the ramen noodles got soaked with gasoline. 😁
Sounds like a "don't ask" situation.
Another success! Was hoping to see a little trail testing, :-)
Ran out of time and it got dark on us. Hopefully he can send us some vids of him testing it out. 👍🏻
Parts stores fail me all the time too
I'm just doing a Dana70 diff right now, waiting on carrier bearings... I live out in the sticks too so most things are 3 days to a week.. and i only go to town once a week
Awesome job
Love this channel and content. Thanks
Glad you like it!👍🏻
"Glad to do it" but next time I'm ordering all the parts before hand lol.
