    I’m old school (70 years young). Rudy good to see you doing it on your own, so many want to ride on the coat tails of their dad. Family is great, but when you do it on your own, sing the old song, “I did it my way”. I will watch your channel.

    Full build on the motor. Sleeves, pistons, rods, etc. then a twin scroll turbo set up built for low end boost.

    It was good to see Colin and Janell. Y'all make a great team.
    I love seeing younger folks fixing older stuff and making it their own. Like Lizzy on your dad's channel, I absolutely love seeing Janell getting in there and getting dirty.

    Rudy get yourself a powered ratchet with locking extensions. As for moving beyond a standard engine rebuild, you know the area you off-road in so you know how much HP/torque you need for the obstacles.
    BTW love seeing Janelle wrenching with you. Remember if she does that with you then you need to do something that she loves also that is out of your comfort zone.

      Don't forget about the "spare nuts and bolts" when you're done putting an engine back in as well. Every freaking time.

      engine hoist/forklift.... the way to test the tensile strength of anything you forgot to disconnect while removing an engine

      My dad called worn-out straight bit screw drivers soft handled chisels. They are easily ground to any desired profile.

    Take it from a 56 year old mechanic your doing great job and video stay safe from GA, you should always start working from the bottom up when taking a engine out it's easier on your back

    I've done something similar to my 99 Grand Cherokee. Pulled the old high mileage 4.0 to replace with 2001, 4.0 while i build my old motor into a .30 over, 4.6 fire breathing stroker, with super charger, Mellon Cam, Bank's Header, 12 port injectors, cold air intake and 67mm TB. We'll see how it goes.

    If it were mine, I would start by figuring out why the old engine died and make that bulletproof on the new engine. My guess is oil starvation during steep hill climbs so you might want to modify the oil pan and pickup or go dry sump. You should probably upgrade the cooling system too. Before adding tons of power, I would consider a doubler.

    If you put together about a 4 to 5 foot extension with a couple wobbly extensions and a wobbly socket on the end you can get those top 2 Bolts Way back behind the transfer case you can run them up there and get them took me a while to figure that one out have fun

      Low Boost Turbo application would be different. Certainly would help low RPM hq/tq for offroading.

    I was hoping you might decide to go with a LS engine, I know that’s been done before. But, power to weight ratio with a LS and mild cam would be awesome in a XJ. Plus the LS weighs less. I am enjoying your channel.

    Hey Rudy,
    Good to see another episode. Also good to see Janelle wrenching by your side.
    Make the engine Uber reliable, add some trusted bolt on HP, increase the cooling capacity......oil cooler??? Beef up the electrical system for both the winch and perhaps and on board welder down the line. Headers are always nice but generate a lot of heat. Just my 2 cents.

    Thanks Colin. That was nice of you to help out. Those were some of Jeep's best motors, IMHO, so it will be interesting to see what you do with it Rudy. But be careful, tis a slippery slope you are walking on. Once you get started buying 'specialty tools', There is never an end to it. That's because dang engineers keep designing new hardware to make mechanics buy new tools. Then you need new boxes to hold them, then a bigger shop to put them in. It never ends. But I see my words are wasted, I spoke too late. I see the gleam in your eyes when you picked up the new 'SHINEY'! So enjoy!

    re: Engine build:
    Well, if you didn't have those huge shock mount hoops in the way, I'd suggest turning it into a 392 HEMI crate engine.
    But as is, bore it .60 over, dome top pistons, forged rods, balanced & polished crank, high lift roller cam w/roller lifters... around 250-270⁰ duration for bottom end torque, & a hairdryer. Most likely 70mm @8-10# of boost.
    That 4.0 should hit 275-300hp & 3-400 ft/lbs torque.

      Yeah all that sounds really really good.... or for a quarter of the cost you could drop a LS in it, 5.3 or 6.0, leave it naturally aspirated and make the same power ...if not more, reliably, without pushing it.

      also when u bore a engine it makes it not very good offroad my 1990 Toyota hills was 5speed 3.slow so bored .30 over and it would need a few minutes to cool down every hour or so when offroad bc radiator was stock and I did swap the fan to a beast electric one but it's not the best to bore anything that's gonna be trailing or offroad anything really unless you've got a beast cooling system

      If seriously off-roading, especially in high heat climates, the cooling system should be in your top 3 first mods.
      In my experience, #1: Get clean, cool air in efficiently. #2 Get it out efficiently. #3 Keep it cool.
      High fuel & high torque, slow speed driving means a 4 row, high flow radiation & a dual electric fan.
      If running an automatic, a heavy duty trans cooler is an absolute must, too.

    Fix the motor for reliability, save it - you ( or your circle of friends) will always need a keep motor - save the money for other mods. You having an extra jeep motor will keep your project going and you might be able to swap it for something interesting you didn’t even know you wanted.

    I hate that jeep used the 2 goofy bolts in the bell housing, every time I've pulled a motor, those bolts went in the trash 🤣 you should put the stroker kit in that 4.0 and turbo it.

    This was a great video Rudy. Build a stroker with a turbo could be fun, or scrap the 4.0 altogether and drop a demon on it.

    Hi Rudy, I'm waiting to someone put a super charger on a Jeep I think you and your Jeep would be perfect for that there are bolt on Kit's available I do believe.

    I rebuilt the engine in my motorhome 22 years ago still going strong 1948 Ford flathead 6 f6 two and a half ton truck made an RV out of it 30 years ago still running strong

    Keep it simple on the engine rebuild. In my experience, more complicated meant more stuff to malfunction when wheeling. Upgrade with newer factory Jeep stuff so you can easily get parts when things break. I'm not saying I wouldn't be happy watching you put a supercharger on a built engine, but you'd have to build the transmission and everything else down the line to handle the torque.

    My trick for those hard-to-reach top tranny bolts on the XJ 4.0, is to put about 4 feet of extensions on my ratchet and a universal joint on the socket end. Angle it up from near the back of the tranny. It works like a charm Rudy.

    Good job, you all work well together including Otis. I would clean up the engine a little and see if anything else needs to be done first. I think your new camera guy/help added to the video. When you build you engine I would go for more torque and bullet proof for the trails. Making a lot more horsepower like a race motor opens you up for things to break. I would a couple more things like a welder and air compressor.

      The I6’s are pretty torquey as it is, with proper gearing, they’ll turn 1 tons and big tires without breaking a sweat. May not go very fast, but who needs to go fast in a brick anyway… I run high pinion 44’s with 37’s on my XJ with the stock engine and 4.88 gearing, I can do 80 on the freeway at about 2200-2300rpm, and still have a lot of torque leftover for when I get my foot into it when merging or dealing with the asshole CA drivers, but I can also crawl over just about anything when I’m locked. Rudy just needs to find the optimal gear ratio for his setup and go from there.

    At some point in the future a Rudy that is older than you is going to have to pull that motor back out I think I would knock some holes through the firewall and put plates over it so those bolts could be gotten to from the inside I know it's a straight six 4.0 they rarely die but

    I did this with 2 ZJs in a 2 bay garage. Pulled them in side by side. And just want to town. Too me about 4 days of solid work since it was my first time ever pulling a motor. Those top bell housing bolts are a pain. Also a big snag we had was getting the motor back in and lined up with the tranny.

    I have built these engines in the past , changed cam & valve springs , ported the intake & exhaust manifolds & ported & milled the head & freshened everything , after doing this it was faster than 5 lt mustangs !

    i made a universal sling for lifting engines, it is a pipe frame with down tabs to bolt or hook to block, hooks to forks or puller and adjusts front and back to allow for engine adjustment coming out, simplified my life

    We've had 1 xj, currently on 4th zj, xj & 1st 3 zj all had 4.0, current zj has the 5.2 and while 4.0 is an excellent engine had always desired just a pinch more, the 5.2 provides what had wished, so far it's gotten 4inch longarm and 31s, being conservative cause it is a daily, just a little more capable

    The I6 is a great motor for this job. I'd refresh the head, make sure the rings and bearings are good, bolt on a quality header and call it good for the next 300,000 miles.

    I have swapped a few engines in XJs. The upper bell housing bolts are easier to remove with a 4' extension and a universal at the socket end. Then your ratchet is back behind the trans with plenty of room to swing it.

    I would wait and run what engine you got; then grab Matt's 4.6, when he gets done with it...
    Even if it needs rebuilt by then, alot cheaper and easier to rebuild a 4.6, than build a 4.6.
    If what you got is not gonna last and you wanna build an engine, stock rebuild + forged pistons with extra ring gap, stronger connecting rods and a small intercooled ebay turbo.
    Fast spool up and lower boost pressures will make for reliable instant power to tug with.
    Reliability + torque, makes a nice low rpm working engine; not high rpm racing engine.
    Drive nice down the highway; couple pounds of boost gives decent fuel mileage and plenty of power for hills with large tires.

    What to do with the old engine: Personally I wouldn't put the money into building it. I'd TDI swap the Jeep rather than build the 4.0. But if you REALLY want to build the Jeep engine, stroke it, and turbo.

    Good job pulling those motors, let's hope they go back in nicely too. Whatever you do when rebuilding that motor, strive for reliability as you get into some awfully wild and far away places. That mini-bike needs some love too and would be a fun toy.

    It is so good to see the work you guys all put in, what is really impressive is that the women are not afraid of getting dirty and jump right in. Talking about Janelle, Lizzy, Lizzy's - Sister (forgot her name) even Jamie will do what's needed to make things work in the buisness.     Two things to note. No job is really underway without hard objects on which to hit your head. And you haven't learned enough from your Dad. The hammer you used wasn't a claw hammer! Always important to have the right tool for the job! I really enjoy your style of videoing! Great sight gags.

    Edelbrock aluminum head ported. ITB's GM coil packs distributor delete. Holly EFI. Roller rockers and cam. Steel rods. Forged pistons. Nitrous.

    You get to those top bolts easier from the bottom with two 2ft long extensions. Works great.

    I remember when I pulled the trans on my YJ and was having the same issues with the 2 top bell housing bolts! I ended up removing the engine mounts so I could tilt the trans down the way you did but I went through the shifter hole and accessed the bolts that way

      Auto XJs have a sealed cover over the hole for the shifter .

    Mild Cam, Larger Intake (single plane) increase injectors to 36lbs per hour and 3 inch exhaust. This will be easier on your engine for slow off-road activity. Also take the load of the clutch fan off use a big electric fan to cool it.

    RUDY If you use a 4 ft extension for the bell housing bolts you can get every bolt on the bell housing in 10 mins flat . you just run it in from the back and over the transmission you can see every bolt there is without all the fight. half from one side and same on the other. hope that helps next time lol.

    take my advice Rudy, get rid of that exhaust manifold with the pre catalitic converters on it, it makes alot of heat under the hood. get Banks header and wrap it with header wrap👍

    4.0 with a proper 4.2 crankshaft and connecting rods, with 4.0 pistons makes it a 4.6. Be sure to use the proper mix of part year because of clearance issues. 👍🏻

    The nice thing about the 4l 6 is the amount of aftermarket support, if it was my motor I would go with the 4.3 crank for the extra inches. An later model intake with upgraded throttle body and headers. A casting #7120 head (1991-95) Just a stock'ish rebuild for reliability.

    The top bolt(s) from transmission to engine is why I've got a few silly long extensions. They are 4ft and 5 ft long. Just for that.
