You are the best brother. I learn so much and for a retired police sergeant with PTSD .... it’s the best therapy. Anytime you want to come assess and get a free fishing trip... I am here. My honor Sgt E. Vidal and K9 Star 💫
If you are going to create plugs from sod, turn the sod over and cut it from the bottom. There's 3x less resistance and you aren't cutting your runners (less stomping). Section the entire piece then pull it apart by hand. BTW love the channel, great tips!
St Augustine cuttings are easy to grow. On brown spots..I just take out the dead grass then add top soil before I plant the cuttings (with roots). I plant cuttings as many as needed at 1 to 2 inches apart. Then I install a cheap water timer and connect the hose to water the cuttings twice a day for 10 minutes. In two weeks time the brown spot is gone.
I’m doing a test on a neglected inherited lawn with 9 SA plugs I found on Amazon to fill in some bare spots. Running all organics and hopefully the weeds will get crowded out in a year or so. I’ve been watching some of your newer vids and have learned a lot! Thx 🌿✌🏼
Wears steel toe boots and protective bibs to trim hedges but only flip-flops with a weed burner!! LOL I am dominating my neighbors sodded yards thanks to this channel for some tips I picked up last year. Its cost me a lot of money to buy 4 truck loads of top soil plus seed, fertilizer and a lot of water. Its driving them nuts but I felt their pain when I moved in last year and they had freshly sodded yards and my builder i bought my house from left me with clay mud, weeds and a lot of straw. If my dog would pee in their yards I would have a better yard but I am still dominating
Thanks for the input, I really enjoyed watching your video, you make it Fun, and not boring like some videos. My lawn has St. Augustine and most of it is weed now and I am looking to modified the lawn and buy either the plugs, or the runners...looking for the least economical way to make my lawn look pretty and green again..thanks for the video again
The sunshine state is entirely different from the north, but I like that you are trying new ways to get what you will be happy with. Most people would settle for what is available without a second thought only a the brave few forge ahead with the effort and extra work to get to there goal gotta respect that. I like you at the end of the job enjoy a few ice cold daycockers, I prefer a mountain view on mine (coors doesn't sponsor me but they should lol)
I just stumbled across your videos. So glad I did. I have a new house and yard that I need to get into shape and your videos are really going to help me! Thank you!
I use a spade shovel on soft ground Not a board to cut sod into squares. Much easier. Then I trace around the sod plug with the spade so I know what to dig out. Have you seen the cost of sod plugs? $55 for 36 plugs at HD. I can make 36 for $6. I love the lawn care nut videos though. I can use all the help I can get.
Man I have some plugs en route from Seed World, but am itching to get planting and considered going to Home Depot today when they get sod and making my own plugs. GLAD I WATCHED THIS! PLUGS FTW
Allyn, I tried the exact same thing last spring with St. Augustine sod from Lowes and cutting it into plugs with the same tool you have. My results were terrible!! I was trying to fill in a few spots from a couple of trees that I had removed in my backyard. The preexisting St. Augustine filled in much faster than the plugs I cut by hand. It was a total waste of time....I should have warned you!! Haha!! Nonetheless, very informative video and it'll be cool to compare the results you get. Can't wait to see how you tackle the front yard!!
I have St Augustine grass in Florida, but the lawn watering was neglected by the previous home owner, and there are areas of 100% weeds. I thought about having the lawn re-sodded for about $7,000. I’d like to try killing the weeds with chemicals in some small area to test using plugs to restore the lawn. I suspect that using plugs would be drastically cheaper than paying thousands of dollars to re-sod the lawn. Where do you buy the plugs? What is the spacing of the plugs? I assume that the lawn mowing company needs to avoid the plug area for a some time so the plugs are not sucked out of the ground by the lawn mower. How much time does it take for the plugs to completely fill in the area with St Augustine grass?
Nice video I just plug my front yard last June 900sq ft.....its looking good but it still has to fill in a bit more. I'll be doing my back yard with st.. Augustine next week but this time I'm doing sod
I gave up on the lawn and decided to learn to grow & eat the weeds in my back lawn. My neighbors removed their Bahia, (think we probably have the left overs from the former farm land) plugged their lawn with St. Augustine. After 2 years of working, working, working, they, took everything out & just put down thousand of dollars worth of sod, daily working & watering & pulling weeds. I must say my front lawn is green with curb appeal. Think of all the money I saved. All kidding aside, organic weed lawn /probably pasture grass & weeds in my rear yard, 1/3 acre that I am slowly doing away with. I am doing permaculture/no dig growing. My front is Bahia & some St. Augustine. The St. Augustine has runners (left overs from a former neighbor) along my fence lines which I need to remove and want to transplant. 1) Will it grow in partially shaded areas, like under my live oak tree? 2) Now for this senior lady how do I transplant these runners need to borrow your knowledge, I have a lot of these runners. 3) Can I plant it in pots and make my own plugs from the runner which have lots of roots? Thanks, enjoyed watching you work on making that corner beautiful thinking you could be growing edible weeds & having a nice free salad. Also, thanks for the jokes. You should be getting some sponsors with all that free advertising you gave those vendors..
Do you have a video or information on the results from the test between plugs that you bought and the sod you that you cut up. I'm at the same Crossroads and was about to buy a lot of sod to cut up but would really like to know the results of your test. Great video!
Rotory tool with a grinding wheel is easier. I've been doing the plug thing for a few years. I have one nice patch that I harvest plugs from. I found it survives better than sod that I have bought in the past. I put some in rows to steadily increase the size of my harvest patch. The rest have gone to start patches on other parts of the property which I will be harvesting from this year.
also if you buy directly from a sod farm instead of second hand from a nursery, you can ask them to harvest deeper. They'll simply cut the actual sod pieces deeper (if they're willing to work with you) and it will retain more roots.
Your wife must think you are a complete nut standing in the backyard burning weeds. I have actually used sod for my whole front yard and it worked pretty good. It's hard to find St. Augustine plugs in San Antionio, TX. Love your channel.
I'm going to be switching to Milorganite this year and they say to do a Criss-Cross pattern on the packaging does that mean I set the spreader at half the sudden about seven seven and a half pounds per thousand square feet since I'm technically going to be going over it twice? I live up north chicago still love the channel keep it up doing great job!
Two Brothers beer in FL?? Great video as always. I think a lot of us would enjoy a video learning how/why you are choosing one type of grass over another. Don't forget us Northerners if you do it!
Problem with using plugs is st aug plugs is 72sq is $60 & a 400sq pallet of st aug sod is $175 so if u do the math youd need 5.5 trays of plugs for the same coverage as one pallet of sod, the plugs would cost you $330 vs $175 for the same coverage a just laying a pallet of sod
You should have looked into Delmar or bitter blue St. Augustine, for your location in the state and the areas conditions that you're working with. To get your own plugs started fertilize with Black Cow fertilizer, works best with this part of Florida's weather.
+David Alonso I've gotta get something that is available to me. Those are more rare in this area - no one carries them in plugs. And I've never heard of Black Cow. Where can I get it?
+The Lawn Care Nut Lowes is were I get and refer my clients to get for lawns. It is in a black and yellow bag. As for having the availability to that contact me and I can arrange that. I myself am in North/Central Florida. I work in Ocala and tend to 500 lawns monthly. I'll help anyway I can with what I have available to me.
First, I have to say "You are Awesome"My husband placed sod (St Augustine)last year. But, this year the weeds have come up! Can we use Epson Salt to rid us of the weeds?
+Rose Blake I've never heard of using salts like that. I am going to do a full rehab on the front lawn here starting next week and weed control safe for St Augustine will be included in the vids. stay tuned! :)
Wow, thanks for the info! I have heard that St Augustine is best for those reel mowers -- the push thing without an engine of any kind. But you mentioned there are different varieties of St Augustine... if you could recommend a particular variety of St Augustine for a reel mower, that would be awesome!
Hi lawn care nut. I live in southern California and I want privacy in the backyard from both sides so neighbors will not be able to see me workout. What do you recommend as for bushes, plants that will grow side brick walls but will not attract little bugs or animals. Thank you
I have goatheads, can I put down a plastic tarp, dump dirt on top and lay sod? Dumb idea? I just don't know how to get rid of the goathead seeds they're everywhere in my backyard.
Good video. I bought one of those things too. The sod did not spread fast. You were right. Sorry, but I am going the Roundup route to kill the weeds, then till, then plant SOD. I want immediate results and money is never any object! :-)
love this video! thanks for helping me figure out what I need to do to get my lawn going here in Darwin Australia. p.s. beer in hand watering the lawn is right up my alley!

Is it a bad thing to put multiple plugs together in one hole? Instead of 1 plug per hole? I didn’t know what I was doing and put a few together in a hole I dug.
I just bought one at Lowes (not a sponsor either I assume?). Can't wait to get home and torch me some weeds. One gallon of 20% horticultural vinegar costs the same as this torch....and I'm betting the torch works better!

Same here in California.....I experienced weed control issues all summer and into fall....any suggestion on weed control for this st. Augustine grass(hint new video)
Can someone please explain why you have to buy sod for warm type grasses? It seems like seed doesn't exist and google has not helped me. I feel like all grass HAS to have a seed.
I have a question. If your over seeding your yard with grass seed. How long would you have to typically wait to mow your yard again. I don't know maybe it's a stupid question with a very simple answer.
I'm not no nut but I would think you can cut the grass when you start to see germination and actually grass growing that you can literally see and I would probably be mulching as well when first cutting the grass so you can still drop all the good stuff instead of bagging it and taking all the good stuff so pretty much when you see grass and its long enough to cut should be good time to cut
+John D'Auria yeah I know it feels that way compared to northern turfgrasses. Good news is the cultivar I'm using "Palmetto" is quite quite a bit softer than most.
Hate to tell you that was the easy part it will grow fast now. Once the rainy season starts in june, you will have to deal with grey leaf spot and sod web worms.
Man, that's a lot of work. I hope you get a much better result than with the Bermuda grass. Spring has started early here in the mid-atlantic (even though it's currently in the 40s) the Forsythias are waking up so that's my clue to lay down pre-emergent for crab grass.
Sodding is easy? I notice here in Texas when landscapers put down sod it browns days later and only weeds grow. Is that normal? (I am not a lawn guy myself I am just curious.)
Laying down the sod is not quite difficult but honestly it's all the prepping beforehand that you have to do, there is this saying that goes " every job has its job" meaning wether your job is labor intensive or you work behind a computer they both have their job within itself. What I'm saying no job is easy
dang that's a lot of work. I would bw defeated already. Patience is the key here. lol. What kind of beer are ya drinking, Alan? Packaging is bit "hippier" than that of the bastard.
I HEARD that you can plant St. Augustine plugs in the middle of other types of grass already there or dying because St. Augustine will take over. Is this true? I live in Los Angeles, CA.
You are the best brother.

+Lanhavoc I had never thought about it that way before - good stuff thank you!
Thanks! I am getting ready to plug centipede, and this is a good tip!!
I like how you sharpened the edges just enough to peel the paint away so the tips rust.

This is the best grass ever!..I did mine with only cuttings from my sister's house.
This helped out a lot. Sprayed my lawn for sod webworms only to find out there was Round Up in the bottom of it and lost 90% of my lawn. Time to plug!
awe that sucks man. Start in September - a little too hot now
I’m doing a test on a neglected inherited lawn with 9 SA plugs I found on Amazon to fill in some bare spots. Running all organics and hopefully the weeds will get crowded out in a year or so. I’ve been watching some of your newer vids and have learned a lot! Thx 🌿✌🏼
Hey how did it turn out?
great illustration on tray plugs vs sod plugs, thanks. well produced video.

You crack me up! That short bit there that went from "starting" to "done" must have taken a long time and it looked like a lot of work!
Perfect timing to plant SA. I just laid a pallet of Palmetto SA. Can't wait to see your tips for SA.
+Philip Rogers awesome!

+ogbobbye Plus it's a ton of fun to try new things! And of course having a cold one while you watch the grass grow is truly the bonus!
I just stumbled across your videos. So glad I did. I have a new house and yard that I need to get into shape and your videos are really going to help me! Thank you!

+Sebastian Pastor thank you my brother.
you diffently got some therapy that day .. very good video gives me a good way to fix my yard thank u for makin video..

+m bilek yeah so I came to the same conclusion that you did. I'm glad I tested this first, that's for sure.
Love your channel and the fact I live in St. Pete makes this my go-to for my lawn rehab.
+Rob Tyre awesome!!!
Glad I didn't skip forward, thought you were going to shovel the weeds out, I need a weed burner too!
how did the 'cut sod into plugs' go? did they survive? did you put much fert prior to laying the cut sod?
I used my edger attachment to cut up sod once... Worked pretty good.
+adw311 good idea!

+TheDude6224 it's alot of work as you know! We have watering restrictions here too so I've got only a small window to get it right.
finally, a helpful st Augustine plug video. thanks man!
+Jake Lane you're welcome - watch the more recent ones - I'm doing a total rehab with plugs
Oldie but a goodie... still helpful.

as always another great informative video. I going to need this channel when I move into the new home.

I love your little "side comments" ha!! Love the sharing of knowledge!

+Frank Vest thanks Bro

+heyparnelli good eye! I'm lucky that I can still get some good midwest stuff all the way down here!
Great video! I'd get nervous using that torch near the PCV fence, though.
+Scott Byer for sure I had to be careful! :)

Ok good....we need to be rid of weeds
Hi, so is it not necessary to sharpen the bottoms? Or did it improve the tool's ability to cut throw the grass and into the ground? Thanks.
Wow, thanks for the info! I have heard that St Augustine is best for those reel mowers -- the push thing without an engine of any kind. love the channel, any chance we could get a time lapse of the grow in off the st.?
+Corey Wilder Not a real time lapse but I am taking pics every few days for sure
Hey LCN I know this is an old video but do you know any good pluggers for st Augustine
Where did you buy those plugs from? They look larger than the ones I am finding. Thanks
Is there a follow up? The only option I have for Zeon Zoysia is buying sod. I couldn't find plugs available.
Enjoyed the video and you do a great job editing with the different camera angles. Also, love your white fence.
+OTC thanks Bro!
I used an old paper cutter. The type with the big lever.
I have goatheads, can I put down a plastic tarp, dump dirt on top and lay sod? Dumb idea? I just don't know how to get rid of the goathead seeds they're everywhere in my backyard.
How long did it take to fill in completely?and did you wait for it to completely fill in before first mow?
Love watching your channel; especially with the new challenges being in FL. I'm looking at building a shed in my backyard for all my lawn care stuff to get it out of the garage for more woodworking stuff. Can you give us a short rundown of your shed? How much stuff do you have in it and what the dimensions are?
+Seth Gee I'd love to do a tour of my shed!! great idea!
Great video. I learned something new (sod and plugs).
+Pyro awesome!
I Love That Song and Your Channel!
+B&B Lawn Care thanks brother
Is it a bad thing to put multiple plugs together in one hole? Instead of 1 plug per hole? I didn’t know what I was doing and put a few together in a hole I dug.
hey Lawn Care nut I love your videos period I just have a question do you ever do anything with centipede grass or plugs
What is your white fencing material and how long does it last?
I just bought one at Lowes (not a sponsor either I assume?). Can't wait to get home and torch me some weeds. One gallon of 20% horticultural vinegar costs the same as this torch....and I'm betting the torch works better!
+Timaustex plus it's fun!
I need that HAT ! Name and place of purchase please. Here's hoping your new lawn ends up looking even 50% as good as Indiana. Keep up the good work Dude.
"A little more"??? At Home Depot a tray is $9 and a piece of sod is $3.50. Also, the trays are significantly smaller than the sod. What's the hurry?
Oh Alan, You so Crazy!!!! How come we don't talk about craft beer any more???
So plugs are better than just laying down large sheets of sod?
Was there a part 2 to this?
so satisfying to watch the weeds get scorched lol
Where did you find Palmetto plugs? I live in FL as well and am having a hard time finding grass plugs in general, yet alone specifically palmetto.
"Really I wanted to go to Home Depot, and say the word bastard in a public setting, and not get in trouble for it!" Lol
+Jake The Lawn Kid you always pick up on the little things :)
+The Lawn Care Nut that's my specialty!
Same here in California.....I experienced weed control issues all summer and into fall....any suggestion on weed control for this st. Augustine grass(hint new video)
+TheDude6224 yep yep! It's all part of the rehab forthcoming!
Can someone please explain why you have to buy sod for warm type grasses? It seems like seed doesn't exist and google has not helped me. I feel like all grass HAS to have a seed.
will st. Augustine plugs overpower existing grass? or would you have to remove the existing grass first, then insert the plugs
What type of grass would you recommend for Louisiana?
I have a question. If your over seeding your yard with grass seed. How long would you have to typically wait to mow your yard again. I don't know maybe it's a stupid question with a very simple answer.
I'm not no nut but I would think you can cut the grass when you start to see germination and actually grass growing that you can literally see and I would probably be mulching as well when first cutting the grass so you can still drop all the good stuff instead of bagging it and taking all the good stuff so pretty much when you see grass and its long enough to cut should be good time to cut
Well that makes sense. Thanks for the reply.
Hey LCN
Just wondering will let both samples grow together or dig up the least impressive ? Can both those grasses Coexist?
+K Jonezey they are both Palmetto. One grown and cut into sod, the other grown in trays - so in the long run it should all look the same.
I'm still laughing. Your posts are always entertaining and informative. Keep up the great work!
I love the work ethic you have. Never cut corners! lol. keep at it man! love the videos
+NH Lawn Guy thank you!
Hey LCN, in New Yawk we call that stuff crab grass!!! 😂😂
+John D'Auria yeah I know it feels that way compared to northern turfgrasses. Good news is the cultivar I'm using "Palmetto" is quite quite a bit softer than most.
+The Lawn Care Nut can't wait to see the comparison results
is there any hardware store that sells the yard Butler?
Love the channel... Need a little advice for a good grass type for Oklahoma
Hate to tell you that was the easy part it will grow fast now. Once the rainy season starts in june, you will have to deal with grey leaf spot and sod web worms.
+Richard smith sounds like loads of fun to me. :)
Hello, do you offer your services in Palm Beach County?
Very informative,thanks for the tips.
I had no idea grass plugs were a thing down south.
+gale212 oh yeah, the grasses here thicken so much quicker.
how would you recommend cutting the the plugs when they get to long
Literally, the only person besides myself who's not embarrassed to call his Hyundai a "work vehicle".
+matt brauninger I make due :)
matt brauninger maybe stop buying so much for your lawn and you could afford that truck
Man, that's a lot of work. I hope you get a much better result than with the Bermuda grass. Spring has started early here in the mid-atlantic (even though it's currently in the 40s) the Forsythias are waking up so that's my clue to lay down pre-emergent for crab grass.
+tboneforreal I've learned alot since the Bermuda debacle and this St Augustine is going to grow good for me with this lawn and shade/sun composition.
+M ARMSTRONG it's gluten free beer from Two Brothers in Illinois. Good stuff for sure!
Great Video! Thanks for sharing!
I HEARD that you can plant St. Augustine plugs in the middle of other types of grass already there or dying because St. Augustine will take over. Is this true? I live in Los Angeles, CA.
in many cases, yes it will take over but best to get out all the junk first.
I enjoy your sense of humor hahaha
Did you get the plugs from Home Depot ??
Your front yard is quite large. Is there a machine that can do the plugging for you, or is that all by hand?
+John Sebeny gonna be by hand. I'll use the tool I bought here, and I'll also be showing how to use an auger bit with a drill.
Lawn Care Nut needs a truck!
+Steve Sherron yes he does!!!
+The Lawn Care Nut Maybe a sponsor deal.
