  • St Augustine grass tips - why does St Augustine grass sometimes have brown spots in it? It's a finicky grass for sure - and sometimes its growth habit contributes to it looking brown and struggling.

After years of studying St. Augustine grass and viewing dozens of other RUclipsrs' postings, this is the first video that explains the normal growth pattern of St. Augustine. Thank you.

I just bought a dethatcher and was ready to go when I saw this video. I packed it back up and sent it back to Amazon. Now I realize I've been in an abusive relationship with my lawn for years. Good thing it's rooted here so it can't move. 🌿🌿🌿🌿

Man I wish you would have made this video like 3 years ago. I've been pulling my hair out for years with St. Augustine thinking I had a permanent fungus issue because I always see this sluff in the grass. Good to know it's natural and something I can ignore.

Yup, a lawn company tried to sell me a bill of goods telling me I had a fungus and needed to switch companies to theirs.

Thank you, ssooooo very helpful and encouraging. This explanation is one of the best on St Augustine I have come across on RUclips. I use no "'cides', fungicides, insecticides or pesticides" on my Southwest Florida lawn. I use dishsoap (not antibacterial type) for chinch bugs, beneficial nematodes (Hb) for grubs, molasses and Milorganite-type natural fertilizers. I cut 6 in to 4 in in summer and 5 in to 3 inches in winter and water sparingly. Hand-pull weeds a little at a time and water sparingly. What this great video did is keep my morale up as I have been worrying about the "looking downward" view of dead grass leaves and worryinmg about thatch. I especially became a bit more alarmed when I found that the lighter weight battery electric lawn mower left the grass a bit higher than the heavier, gas-poered mower. You explanations tell me I am probably doing as well as expected.

My St. Augustine lawn in Texas came out of winter with a lot of dead areas despite my lawn service fertilizing and watering properly. There are tons of brown stolons especially near fence lines. Do I just rake these up or t let them disintegrate naturally. I don't want to choke out new growth

i thatched mine and it didn’t kill it, it also didn’t rip out the spolons, it might depend on the dethatcher. It got a lot of that dead thatch off but left a healthy bit behind. I’m looking forward to it coming back here soon

My 25 year old Saint Augustine grass had thatch so thick some areas turned brown and would not rejuvenate with runners. I was surprised that $130 Sun Joe electric dethatcher did a marvellous job pulling out yards and yards of dead thatch. My grass hasn't look better since I bought my home 25 years ago.

Last night we actually used our plastic fat leaf rake and raked up over 3 trash cans of St Augustine dead grass. Most of it was from our grass dying out from what looks like a fungus issue. I just blanket sprayed Eagle 20EW Fungicide on the lawn and will start that program again. I also have Clearys 3336 in liquid form too. I will rotate those Group 3 and 11 every few months. Great video as always. I just threw down some Sunniland 7-0-20 with insecticide as well with a batch of RGS, Humic 12, Microgreene 0-0-2, and Air 8 along with the Eagle 20EW. I can't believe we are still spraying and laying down ferts and micros here in Central Florida! Warm temps indeed! Merry Christmas 2021!!

@@jvjdrn Looking terrific. It has been a great start to the spring season. All is good. No issues. I just spot sprayed the weeds again and now we are just about 100% weed free. The grass has really filled in nicely. All is good. I laid down a 7-0-20 50# bag of Sunniland fertilizer as well with the micronutrients. Thanks for asking!

What sub species of St Aug is your lawn? I recently moved to South Central Texas and being from S. Louisiana am more used to the thick, long, green leaves of St Aug. I know they have several different sub species and I am looking for the widest longest leaf variety. Much inspired by the Caribbean Beach Resort in WDW.

Grass is dying and watering doesnt seem to help! I tried aireator as well with malorgonite and some fertilizer but it is dying and very spread thin. Hardly any sprouts left and mostly dead sod. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

My front yard is very spongy ( St Augustine grass) I can not use a riding mower of any type on my front because they sink and cut the yard way too short. There is sooooo much space between top of grass and dirt. The mowers are all set on highest setting. My push mower works fine but I am having health issues and can not mow my lawn. What do you suggest..

Get a self propelled lawn mower. You don’t have to push it. You basically walk with it and steer it.

I assumed I needed to dethatch my st Augustine because I noticed after walking outside in socks that they would get wet like water was sitting on top, and it would feel mushy. I’m not sure if that’s normal. (In Houston)

Potentially silly question but with d-thatch containing molasses is there a greater chance for a bug problem?

I have a lawn service spray for bugs, but ants still get through sometimes. Even if they don't set up a colony, I would think that this would bring all the ants to the yard. (insert musical pun reference)

Hi there! I purchased a home near Orlando. Last year my st Augustine grass looked great for what I remember most of the year. But now it’s June and there are lots of yellow and brown spots happening in my front yard - trying to rack my brain around this. Is it because they aren’t getting just water? I thought it would have been getting green by June like my neighbors

That’s close, but the key ingredient is sunlight, which helps break down the carbon dioxide (and other nutrients) into oxygen (and other byproducts).
