This is the simplest way to fill in the bare areas, which I have ever seen in RUclips. Most of the lawn guides require lots of expensive equipment but this is what we need. Thanks!

This video is the complete deal on how to fill in dead spots in St. Augustine. Sounds simple BUT it's the important details on the prep and application that makes the difference. Everybody says to just dump some BK on these spots. Then your yard doesn't react and you have to do it over or your just disappointed in the results after all the work and money spent. I've got some areas where I lost turf to pulling out crabgrass, and sod webworms eating my grass. Followed this plan and as he said Mother nature made it work. Thanks Chad.
Just wanted to thank you for this video. I had some dead spots in my front yard because of trees we had removed. Nothing would grow back for months. Found this video, did everything step by step and now I have a full yard of grass (st. aug). I’d love to show you pics before and after if you’re interested! Thanks again for the video/advice. 100% works.

How about getting a post hole digger and taking some plugs from the healthy areas of the lawn and putting the plugs in the affected area. Fill the hole up with regular dirt and the grass will recover from the runners. Done it many times.
You still need to put down soil. The bare areas exposed to the sun will make it very compacted and the runners will not grab. That is the case here. You can also buy plugs from the store. Seems like a lot of work, but that's one way of doing it.

Thanks for this info. I have horrible grass and a large tree that covers a large portion of the lawn. Now i know the optimal sand manure ratio. Thanks!
No problem!! Thank you so much for supporting the channel. Make sure that the tree is trimmed properly and brings in as much light as possible. If their is not enough sun light then this will not work either. Doing this is a great place to start. If you are still having trouble under the tree keep trimming it till enough light gets in to allow the grass to fill back in.

Notice how when the soil is leveled out there are a few blades of grass sticking up through the dirt. That’s perfect. As long as you have some blades sticking up through the dirt, the grass will be able to grow through it without a problem. You know you have it too thick if there are no grass blades popping through.
I set my mower to one click lower then highest level to get rid of some dead grass between grass spots that made grass look brown.I will fill with mix. Did I do the wrong thing trying to cut a little lower in trouble area. Lately been raining everyday in Orlando.

Grass starting to peak out. May need more coverage due to dirt settling. Thank you for the tips. I subscribed. Looking forward to seeing the results video soon!
It may need an aeration as well!!! A week.is a very short time. I could give it a month before adding more soil. This will help a lot and be needed several times depending on how bad the lawn is!!! Thanks for the comment and support 👍
Same process for zoysia? I have done this but clearly did not use enough. I used same black kow manure but used play sand. I will try again using more of both (and leveling sand, not play sand)
Sooo happy to find this video & your channel! We removed a greenhouse set up on top of our backyards st augustine grass and i am determined to revive the area. Bummed these exact products are not easily available here in So Cal. I am excited again to get back at it though. :) Thank you!
Thank you for the support!! It will be difficult to find something in California for the lawn. The best thing you can do is just keep searching for something similar!! I really appreciate the comment!!
you put out great info..can i use this on compacted lawn? like aerate first ? im new to lawn care..can i rake out all dead st. augustine grass and do this or no?
Looks interesting, but I can’t afford to raise the level of my yard any higher. There is bordering cement and draining to worry about. I cut a piece of sod into plugs and let that fill in bare areas.
If you lay the soil slower over time, you can achieve the same result just slower. I'm not a big fan of plugs, even though they definitely can work. It might be best to just cut out and re sod at the desired height.
I have a lawn with St. Augustine grass with many dead snd smashed grass patches due to foot traffic. I think Kikuyu grass looks similar to Augustine grass? If I mix both grasses by planting Kikuyu grass in the dead patch areas, will the final lawn result into a similar looking mix of grasses? Or would I have done a mistake and done a mix of grasses that is not compatible and I'd have to go and kill out the Kikuyu? Thanks.
I would recommend adding sod on top if it is on a slope. It all depends on rainfall and what degree the slope is but erosion may become an issue before it fills in.
Out here in Southern California I can’t get my hands on black kow. Do you you have an alternative recommendations to mix with sand. My options are basically steer manure or chicken manure. Thanks!
I have a question. I used black kow a few months after on an area where I planted grass that turned it a nice dark green. My question is what’s in the black cow that turned it that color that the rest of my yard is missing?
Cow shit!!! Haha Rich soil. That's what can be a game changer in the lawn. Rich soil. Our soil sucks and without using soil amendments, fertilization is just temporary food. If can change soil you can change the lawn. The best way to do this is areate and top dress the lawn.
Worked. Took a few months so stuck with it
It takes time it will get the job done. Thank you for the comment and support👍

Can’t find leveling sand only general paver sand or play sand here in Dfw metroplex….Home Depot or lowes
you put out great info..can i use this on compacted lawn? like aerate first ? im new to lawn care..can i rake out all dead st. augustine grass and do this or no?
Looks interesting, but I can’t afford to raise the level of my yard any higher. There is bordering cement and draining to worry about. I cut a piece of sod into plugs and let that fill in bare areas.
If you lay the soil slower over time, you can achieve the same result just slower. I'm not a big fan of plugs, even though they definitely can work. It might be best to just cut out and re sod at the desired height.
Awesome information and instructions. Thank you.
You are welcome!! Thank you for the comment and support 👍 🤙
Can’t find leveling sand only play sand or paver base
Thanks I will try this👍
Great video. Is there a follow up video to see how the patches are doing?
I’m curious too.
I am making a new video showing me do this over an entire lawn front lawn and the progress over a year!!!
Great video and enthusiasm!!!
Thank you!!! I appreciate the comment and support 👍!!
Would love to see a before and after!
I am working on some photos I have collected over the years of just that.
Thanks.
I would recommend mixing the turf!! If you want to mix in a high traffic area, bermuda is better for traffic and grows well here.
What about when it is time to cut the yard,do I mow around it if it hasn’t sanded in.
yess mow around area.
We have bad bare spots at the top of our backyard on a slope down to a lake. I am going to try this there. Have been worried about erosion.
Thanks!
Hey Leo!! I think either of those would be great mixed with sand!! You should be good to go!!!
Thanks for the comment and support!!!
I have a question. I used black kow a few months after on an area where I planted grass that turned it a nice dark green. My question is what’s in the black cow that turned it that color that the rest of my yard is missing?
Cow shit!!! Haha
Rich soil. That's what can be a game changer in the lawn. Rich soil. Our soil sucks and without using soil amendments, fertilization is just temporary food. If can change soil you can change the lawn. The best way to do this is areate and top dress the lawn.
Great video! Love the way you explain things, subscribed!
