Inside Spain's Exclave In Africa 🇲🇦🇪🇸 (

  • Sometimes, you just never know what to expect in Africa. I was in the far north of Morocco, on a very unusual border -- a border with Spain, not in Europe, but on the African continent. This was the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, which borders the Moroccan town of Fnidiq on the other side. What a strange situation, I thought. Your first thought might be, hey why does Spain still have colonies there? But the truth is a bit more complicated -- Ceuta is considered as Spanish as any other part of Spain.
...which is only a problem when you consider some controversial outfits they wear for Christian ceremonies and festivals. What was life like on the border? Let's go and find out!

It's been an interesting ride through the northwestern tip of Africa. This turned out to be my last video from Morocco, as I had to cut the trip a bit short and go elsewhere. Great country though. I'll definitely be back someday to explore the (Western?) Sahara, I didn't even get a selfie with a camel yet.
I'll probably be back in a few weeks from somewhere new. Enjoy your summer, wherever you may be. Hope the moonshine is good there.

They hid their identities with costumes as it was illegal and punishable by death to celebrate anything but Islam under the Moorish occupation. That`s why perhaps he said no no good bye. he didnt wanted to go with you thats why than he walked away. it has nothing to do by the old men for being impolite to you or anything. This border crossing from Fnidiq, Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in a way reminds me of USA border crossing from San Ysidro, Calif. (San Diego County) into Tijuana, Baja-Mexico which I would cross an average of every two weeks on Saturday weekends for more than 15 yrs straight to party with the Mexican Senoritas at "Adelitas", "Las Chavelas" bar/clubs. Even though there was only a 10-15 minute walk across the bordering two countries, I could almost "IMMEDIATELY" see the vast difference between the two sides of the bordering cities. Same as Ceuta has at least 50% Moroccan residents on the Spanish side, it was well know that at least 70% of the residents on the American side in San Ysidro were Mexican and other Hispanic people. It was always nice living in southern California while being educated and having a nice salaried career job which allowed me to drive to a different country where my money went further, and could return back to my parked car on the USA side within approximately 10 hours and drive back home in a little less than 2 hours early Sunday morning and sleep until 2 PM when I would wake up to exercise and do my weekly laundry to start my Monday work week..😊😊

But it was well worth the scenic drive with a stop at Carl's Jr restaurant for a snack before walking across to Revolution Blvd, and farther to the Red Zone to visit the world famous "Adelitas Bar", Las Chavelas, Chicago Club, Hong Kong Bar, Hawaiian Bar, and observe the HUNDREDS of beautiful Senoritas (Damas) all standing up against walls of different buildings while trying to catch a TRICK..🤣😂

@@robban5545 Even back than the inhabitants were roman Africans and Roman Iberians. Both ancestors of the people that currently live in northern Morocco. The only true historical heritage Castillian spain has is from the time it conquered the region, not before that.
Castillian spain has no affiliation with the Visigoths who lived in the south of Iberia or in cueta and melilla, because the Castillians expelled the original inhabitants of these regions (the Andalusians) who actually descended from those original southern Visigoths and fled to north-Morocco.
So, bringing up the Visigothic occupation doesn't make Spain's occupation any more legitimate than that it makes the Moroccan occupation.

But, someone from Northern-Morocco has way more connection, integrity and heritage in that land than someone from mainland Spain. So, you'll have to accept the Maghrebi presence there as a fact of life.

This is weird but I find that Americans don't travel anywhere near as much as Canadians. I think it's because Canadians are more open to other cultures and ways of life whereas Americans are more conservative and insular. Americans mainly travel only within the US. If Americans travel abroad it's usually only Mexico. I traveled to the Caribbean a few years back and I would see so many people with North American accents and they were all Canadian. Also in Peru the tourists are all European or Canadian and very few from the US. Cheers.

@@coupleofbeers31 as a Canadian who has grown up in Toronto I have been surrounded by friends of various cultures and it is very normal for me and I would assume for other Canadians to want to explore and learn more about other cultures. It was encouraged in school with various cultural days and builds more curiosity to learn more about a culture you may know less about. When you actually visit those places you understand them even more. Also I would say that when you're used to being surrounded by many different cultures there is also a feeling of comfort even when you travel to another culture, you don't feel strange or out of place because you've already seen everyone so it's all normal to many of us. That is my perspective as a Canadian so the world to me is just an extension of Canada, so I still feel like this is all still my bigger home to explore and learn more about!

Hello Tommy! I have been following you since 2 years ago.. and this is the first time I leave you a comment!
I´m from the provence of Cádiz (mainland spain)... just 16km away from Africa, it is creazy how far and how close we are from each other!! You said Ceuta is as Spanish as Madrid or Barcelona, well Ceuta it is defintly way more spanish than Barcelona and can be more spanish than any other part of mainland Spain. People in Ceuta are very proud of Spain and very patriotic, also many of ceutans are from the spanish army.
About the KKK statue.. well is a religious dress from semana santa (holly week) it can be the most cultural, traditional and important week in Spain, specially in Andalusia(southern Spain). It is also way older than the KKK so problably KKK copy that religious spanish dress from us.
I will highly recomend you to cross the border from La línea (spanish city) to Gibraltal (UK). It is mind blowing too! La línea is one of the poorest western european cities ang Gibraltar is one of the richest places on earth! Many spanish cross the border by foot everyday to get to work in the Uk. Now with Brexit made things wrost to Spanish an also to the British.
You will love how the gibraltarians speak English mixing it with Spanish!
Thank you for your videos mate!!
