- Brazil is a great country.
But there were a few things I didn't quite understand -- like, how does a huge city like Manaus exist in the middle of the Amazon rainforest? Where did Rio de Janeiro's giant drug gangs come from? And most importantly, why do they turn everything into a buffet restaurant, even with steak and sushi!?
I mean seriously, a sushi buffet, but without the conveyor belt? I know Brazil had many immigrants from Japan, but would be the sushi be good? Life's important questions. Join me on a journey around Brazil, as we visit São Paulo, Manaus, Rio de Janeiro and even meet some UFC fighters like Jailton Almeida in Salvador. Vamos la.

Whoa, 4 videos from Brazil in 1!? This must be a Sabbatical Christmas or something. That's it for Brazil, until next time that is. Go visit sometime, you'll love it. As for me, I'll see you somewhere new very soon..
Love you! I love everything you do, your channel, your incredible personality and talents! You are the best! Take care of yourself and enjoy home.
Haha, he thought he'd fit in with the Palmeiras shirt in Rio, but that actually means he stands out even more, noone roots for Palmeiras in Rio
You make the best videos Tommy, i really enjoy and look forward to them. I’m going to start learning Brazilian Portuguese and I was wondering if you can help me with any tips or methods you use to learn it. I’m really intrigued with the language and love the way it sounds, the people seem like awesome people. I plan to also learn more about their culture and history. Thanks
Go to north Africa .
Japan? Napal? South of France? Antarctica?
14:30 As a Brazilian, that's exactly what I think. All travel vloggers just show the stereotypes of the countries or tourist places. Only here in Sabbatical we see the real country. And that's why I love your channel, Tommy.
@@probablytommy I hadn't noticed that mistake. Thanks for the correction, Tommy!
good to know thank you! it does appear tommy is as genuine and unbiased as they come. ♥♥
He even has those African women thumbnail made me want to watch the video otherwise I wouldn't have. From 🇰🇪
The Real Brazil ?? Is that eating
Sushi in expensive restaurants .
Typical Western tourist stuffing food into his face . Disgusting !!
Well its also that nobody wants to see a metro that looks like home. They want to see something that does not exist at home and is scary/unique/ghetto or such.. that's always what fascinates people. Always will.
Broooo, I can’t believe you casually met Jailton Almeida!! Dude is an absolute killer and has massive potential. Been watching him since contender series. This is so dope!!
Looked Jailton Ameida up. Wow, impressive! He has won a lot of his matches.
Jailton Malhadinho AND Carlos Boi
yeah he is brazilian khamzat hasnt got hit once im looking forward to his next fight
That's not dificult in São Paulo! Since 20 years I went out of the capital , but close in a green village. So other day I went to São Paulo and took a coffee at Coffeelab in the hood of Vila madalena where I met the Red Hot Chili Peppers at a break there and had a short talk to them, cause I'm listening to them since the first album. That was very nice and this São Paulo, Brazil. One of his shades....
He just beat Derick Lewis in the last UFC event.
My landlord evicted me today and gave me 7 days to leave. Needles to say i'm stressed out and have been really depressed but when your intro song started playing I smiled from top to bottom and started getting jiggy with it lol. Thanks for brightening up my day bro.
That sounds rough. Good luck with that dude, brighter days ahead
Hope you've been doing well since you left this comment.
Jailton appearing on this video really caught me off guard. Dude is a legit contender and definitely a future champion. He literally hasn’t been hit in his 2 UFC fights. Can’t wait to see his next fights.
Brazil puts out contenderrrrrrrrs
bro same! what a pleasant surprise, and he covered the tab at that shop
He's done it all to make this video. The story, the people, the location, literally everything is put into this and it's amazing. We're lucky to have such a person to share this with us.Greetings from Nairobi Kenya love you all.😀
Hello Kenya greetings from Jamaica.

I just have one think to say. Thank you so much, Tommy, for coming to our country, for have been tasting the huge variety of flavours we have here, for showing to people in other countries the kind of people we are, the places we have. And there's still so much to be seen! Muito obrigado!
You made ma anxious at the Sushi Tommy. I was like "oh nooo, hows he gonna eat all that" lol
I swear I was like "wth, he doesnt know what he's doing"
The only RUclipsr I have all notifications on for, I enjoy the content a lot my friend. Excited to ride along for the next adventure!
These videos are a breath of fresh air from mainstream travel channels.
Yo Tommy, I’m almost done watching all #119 episodes & the one thing I can say is, the quality & your genuine personality has been consistent from the jump! 🇸🇷 🇰🇪 🇺🇬 🇷🇼 🇲🇽 🇳🇬 🇹🇿 🇧🇷, I can’t wait for the next series ✈️!
Agreed 100%. The little trivia bits about the places he goes and interacting with people in local language is nice way of doing travel vlogs. Makes them so enjoyable to watch.
I like how he is not acting,he does his homework n he fills u up on all his findings and history facts
Tommy, Sincelly The Brazilian food is more delicious than for American food ??!! What do you think and what’s your avaliation 0/10. ??!!
Tommy:
Brazil was more advanced than the United States when I visited in 1978. I remember getting my boarding pass from a ticket machine back then, whereas in the US in 1981, they were still handwriting boarding passes. Additionally, in Brazil, there was a unique urban layout with overpasses needed to cross streets every few blocks. The iconic yellow Volkswagen Beetle taxis added to the charm of the cityscape. From a high-rise building, observing the bustling traffic with these yellow taxis felt like watching a fast-paced Pac-Man game. If you were looking for an unforgettable bachelor party, Brazil was the place to go.
However, it's important to note that the situation might have changed over the years. Your video shows that some places have deteriorated while others have evolved.
Another noteworthy aspect I'd like to mention is my experience confirming my flight back home. At that time, the entire six-story office building was dedicated just to travel agencies. In São Paulo, the airport was still under construction, and it was touted to be a one-of-a-kind facility in the world-a supersonic airport designed to enable flights to any part of the globe. What struck me was the sight of a queue at the airport, with over nine planes lined up for takeoff, marking a remarkable moment.
The metro is nicer now, I can see. Then was a little darker, I want to think.
Your videos are cool, and you show many places and don't add fluff like most bloggers.
My man, you're back with another video !
Man! You put away some groceries, son! Congratulations. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for letting me tag along.👍
Smashed it in Brazil..Where to next 🤔 where ever it is you can be sure I will be watching 👀 Big love to you Tommy from London 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 ❤
Wow, I've been to that pink building in Manaus. I went when I was a kid. I didn't remember, but seeing your video, I suddenly remember walking up those steps, and two women wanting to hanging out with my dad and I to practice their English.
Jailton Malhadinho will be the future UFC champion. Very cool to know the training place of these athletes, congratulations for the great video.
Having spent three years in Brazil before (left just before the pandemic), rodizio and in particular Sushi rodizio is one of the things I miss the most.
Já passei três anos no Brasil antes (esquerda antes da pandemia), o rodizio e em particular o Sushi rodizio é uma das coisas que mais sinto falta.
Amigo, conte pra mim: how did you do 3 years ? As an American (the USA kind), I can only get tourist visas where a person has to renew a 3 month visa with the federal police to get a 6 month chunk, but then (if we wanna be legal) we’ve got to leave the country and come back some other time… I love Brazil soooo much, I would like to make a life there and only go back to the USA to visit family and earn money… even when I was teaching in the federal district and Plano Piloto, even government people were stumped about the question of how do you get a proper work visa-
@@miahconnell23 I was lucky enough to be able to get a work visa through my company. Just like in most countries you need local sponsor to be able to get a work visa/residence permit, it also helps a lot if you bring skills that is hard to find locally in Brazil.
So we started with a 2 year visa and extended this for one additional year.
The other options are family reunion or investor visa unless you are eligible for a retirement visa, that’s my understanding of the Visa situation anyway.
@@miahconnell23 If you have capital and a good idea, Brazil is King!!! Just do it!!!
A great day when you post it still holds.
Great time and energy.
I like your videos: they are educational/informative, casual, orginal and full of fun
Love Rio de Janeiro’s vibe in these upper class beach neighborhoods. The laid-back and bohemian sentiment Rio gives has a sharp contrast to the more rushed life in São Paulo full of business people in suits.
Nice that you got to visit both because even though they’re the two biggest cities, they’re very different. You compared São Paulo a lot with NYC in these videos, but Rio is really incomparable. Sitting in the outside area of store, having an Açaí and just watching people pass around the neighborhood is my favorite thing ever.
go explain wtf a bohemian sentiment is supposed to be. youre just making this up
@@Felix-tp8ch he's not. he just means it has an artistic vibe
@@Felix-tp8ch meaning of Bohemian:
"a socially unconventional person, especially one who is involved in the arts."
"socially unconventional in an artistic way."
so it has to do with artistic vibes.
What a wonderful person you are, Tommy. Your content inspires me to get out of my comfort zone and explore. Just can't get enough. Thank you so much 💗
i've been looking forward for your next video and it didn't disappoint i really enjoyed it Thank You Tommy
Fascinating Look into the many sides of South America. With the right set of eyes one can see the extremely hard work put in between the lines. Well Done & Thanks🙏🏻
THIS DUDE CAN REALLY PUT AWAY A LOT OF FOOD !!!!!
Yeah, what an idiot 😂
Too much.
Brilliant videos man, I've been watching them all. All the best from Scotland
I'm currently trying to learn a new language. I get overwhelmed though and stop for awhile. Then, when I see one of your videos, it inspires me to continue. Thanks for that.
Brazilian food is made to please our Brazilian palate. In some regions of Brazil you can find a hot-dog different from the North American standard, a sushi different from the traditional Japanese one or a pizza different from the Italian standard. I hope you like it when you taste the variety of food here in Brazil.
I'm from Brazil and I'm loving you my country through your videos
Bro your a awesome people person. I see u making others happy just by speakingvtheir language and following their cultures. Good man.
Dear Tommy, an amazing episode!! Just wish you would have split and extended the content info multiple episodes. I’m an addict of your content.
To sit in a brasilian bar and not look at the screen during football... Love you dude, and Im from sweden.
Another awesome adventure, thanks for brining us along for the ride.
Easy easy Sabat! Yes many volgers go to expose Pavilas BUT as you said interacting and understanding the locals at or around any place in the world is just as important! Good job. Man you are a Sushi eating machine! Great vid...you represent a lot of us average guys and our interests! Thanks again!
What’s average about him?
yep, not average at all, unless we speaking about body. His laid down and sly charisma is no joke at all, it’s a really inspiring model in this world of exaggeration
Glad you enjoyed your time in Brazil 🍻
There is still so much else to discover, like the center west region with the huge farms and Brasilia, one of the largest planned cities in the world, the swamp regions of Pantanal, the southern regions with a lot of german influence and cold weather, would be nice to explore alongside the frontier with Uruguay
Big Uruguay good football team ---love from Jamaica.
Uma viagem saindo de curitiba e explorando os 3 estados do sul ate chegar em montevideo seria foda
I have to sayTommy, listening and watching your encyclopedic knowledge of every damned thing, makes me wish you were my History or Geography teacher at secondary school here in Glasgow ,back in the day.I can quite believe you have the gift of a photographic memory and thus ,total recall. So entertaining.Cheers big man.
Yeah, he's clearly intellectually gifted, and bloody remarkable with learning languages.
Good content as usual Tommy, keep em coming.

A nice variety of Brazilian adventures in one video. Enjoyed seeing all of it! :)
All the guy does is eat !! He managed to make even Brazil boring !!
Another great video Tommy! 😀
Been watching your videos for some time and this is one of the most fun ones.
I really like your style of vlogging, plan to watch all of your old videos that I haven’t watched yet.
Thanks for all the great videos that I’ve seen so far and best of luck in your future travels! 😀😀
Loved it!! You're hanging out with Jailton "Brazilian Khabib" super humble and chill fighter from what I saw.. Eu Adoru Muito essa video! I cannot watch the older videos anymore, because the evolution has come so far... I have to continue pushing forward on the journey. Can't go backwards!
I lied.. I'm watching guyana videos .. haven't seen. good looks
I love how dynamic and interest this episode was. You did a great job of capturing the adventure. 'brigado!
The Sushi done like Brazilian bbq is such an awesome idea.....I've always loved numerous different meats being brought to me regularly until I'm about to burst.....That same MO with sushi sounds just as fantastic.
This is what I thought when watching it as well.
The system is called rodízio... from roda, wheel, because it makes turns... the waiters, around the restaurant, something like that
Related the the French rotisserie, although that is meat making turns while cooking.
In Brazil there are rodízios of everything.
Barbecue and pizza are the most famous.
But there are rodízios of French crepe, Brazilian pastel, pasta (imagine all sorts of Italian recipes and sauces and also different stuff, like spaghetti, gnocchi, fettuccine, ravioli, tortelli, conchillioni, etc
@@rogeriopenna9014 Thank you Rogerio. I knew there was a name for it. I didn't realize it extended to so many other avenues though.
I am most definitely a fan of the style. No complicated menus, no 'order envy' or agonizing over choices....Just a lot of good eats brought right to you until you are ready to pop.
The only downside I see is that I never have room for a good flan dessert...LOL.
@@rogeriopenna9014 Sounds amazing. Damn.
I was hungry when I started watching this video. Seeing you eat that much sushi has made me full.
I'm a German living in Brazil and would like to congratulate the author of this video for the true picture of what life in Brazil is like. Great feature. Thank you.

Great content once again Tommy, ty. Good to see that the bus stops there had chin up bars just so you could practice your form 🙃. Nice too see how clean Rio's train stations are compared to NYC MTA system (maybe safer too😂 ). Safe travels my friend.
actually it's clean and safe-looking because the system here is tiny compared to mta's, and it catters only for a small portion of the whole city: there are only 3 lines, about 50 stations (the majority not in working class neighborhoods) And it's absurdly priced to ride: R$6,50!! while sao paulo that actually has NYC level transit it's r$4,40.
I learned alot from watching your video 😊 great content you have a beautiful cheery spirit that's very refreshing safe travels😎.
Tommy s likes truthfully speaking without bias Tommy deserves much much more likes, All those watching Tommy's vlogg cluck like button unless u dnt enjoy them than don t watch if u refuse giving him deserved LIKES
Another great video from Brazil I enjoyed it👍🏾😎
Boy I thought I could put away the sushi. You have me beat. Love your videos.
I lived in Rio for 10+ years and never had any issues because I wasn’t flashy, just like any big city. It’s an amazing city, you can walk everywhere or take public transportation for cheap. Great people and great energy and beautiful! I will always consider it my home in Brazil. I lived in the interior for 8 years and the north east for a time also and there’s no comparison. O Rio é o melhor de todos.
Cidade de deus :)
Thank you ! We cariocas are very receptive.
Holy cow the service at that restaurant in the beginning was truly on another level!
I really appreciate all the information that you put in your video about all the different places you go. The fact that you take time to like talk to the people and hear what they have to say and speak their native languages and and be part of their culture and Community is really something that's a little bit different bro and so I have to applaud you and give you props for being a individual.
I got full watching you eat all that sushi 🤣

This was one of the best vids Tommy, without a doubt, you went in to the heart of Brazil and discovered one of my favorite sports, I love it, thank you so much, had alot of fun, the fighters are such cool people in, Brazil and I loved the guy talking to you about the UFC and the fighter walking with you, so friendly, wish I knew there names so I could watch out for them in the fights ahead! Plus all that food you are, Tommy, oh my goodness, you were putting it away! Such great people in Brazil, so friendly!
Thank you for the video! ☺♥
I'm very impressed by your portuguese, it's far from perfect but you got some of the pronunciation pretty well in I assume a fairly short amount of time, parabéns
who says it has to be perfect? He speaks so many languages. How many do you speak?
@@asintonic bro nobody said that I'm complimenting him
Tommy is a polyglot.
But it's nice to remember he lived several years in Buenos Aires and is fluent in Spanish.
Even so it's amazing how good his Portuguese is... some words and accents are perfect while others are still improving.
But that was in like what, 2 months in Brazil?
Tim Vickery, the English football journalist, has been living in Brazil since 1994 and Tommy already seems to have surpassed him in some things
@@rogeriopenna9014 Difference is that Vickery is British, who are notoriously bad at learning languages. I've seen Brits in Spain and Thailand who have lived there for 30-40 years and can't say more than a sentence in the local language. You're the best YT travel show by far
just a little correction, leblon isn't the richest neighbourhood in brazil at all. Used to be in the 80s or so. Now a lot of neighbourhoods in sao paulo are richer. That not counting Vila da Serra in Nova Lima, minas gerais, exactly where i live, which is the richest by far

god bless u, love the vids .. best youtuber 🙌🙌
Great vlog! I always love your stuff. Don't forget to hit up Balneário Camboriú before you leave Brazil
He is already leaving.
And I wonder if he would visit Camboriú.
Tommy likes to show stuff of the beaten path.
Well, true. Camboriú is but known internationally... so who knows.
But I guess if he visited Rio Grande do Sul for example, instead of Gramado, we might get a video of the Missões with an history lesson about the Jesuit missions, and at the same video he would visit that city if twins
Then he might do another video visiting Rio Grande port and the Casino beach
Stuff like that, that no other foreigner ever did
@@rogeriopenna9014hope he visits the south in the future. I went there last year (i'm From Pará) only visited porto alegre and pelotas where i was staying.
