I Didn't Know São Paulo Was So Italian🇮🇹🇧🇷 (

  • São Paulo. The megacity of not just Brazil, but all of Latin America. If you're flying to Brazil, this is typically the only way in, and the only way out. I didn't quite know what to expect: we're used to hearing about favelas and robberies in the country, which leads one to imagine a disorganized city barely holding it together. That's not São Paulo. There's way more money here than you'd expect, and many parts looks as modern as anywhere else in the world. There's the largest Italian and Japanese diasporas in the world. It's a thriving city on the surface.
But as always, the truth is more complicated than that.

People are so blinded by the stereotypes and assumptions of a place that they forget to notice how deep, rich, and diverse their culture is. Brazil has the largest Italian, Japanese, and German communities (outside its own country of course). Like I said in another comment, the (bad) fame stuck with Sao Paulo due to the 80s and 90s. Sao Paulo was one of the most dangerous cities in Brazil back then. Many of us grew up or spent a good deal of our lives watching news about violence in Rio and Sao Paulo. It also helps that, due to the fact that its so big and a major economic hub, news related to violence in Sao Paulo are more often broadcasted to the whole country and this feeds the bias even further. But violence has declined sharply since then. The worst places in the country are, by far, in the North and Northeast of Brazil right now (when it comes to big cities). That doesn't mean Sao Paulo is completely safe, and also there are good and bad areas, but considering the country as a whole, São Paulo is a pretty solid place to be. I'm a brazilian and I always feel safe there. Just don't go flashing expensive smartphones around because that turns you into a target in any big city.

São Paulo is the safest capital in Brazil by quite a big margin - the murder rate is around 4.6 for 100k, just about the same as New York. However, there are some neighbourhoods where it's more dangerous than literal warzones. Of course, those places are usually far away from places where people visit and most of the violence is between criminals or between the police and criminals. As a general rule, São Paulo is a safe city for tourists and residents and most people wanting to leave Brazil is mostly because of politics and how unpredictable things like economy really is. Not even downtown and Japantown where you visited is really all that dangerous, it looks seedy but it's just because is old and cluttered.

Ninguém se sente seguro sabendo que ao andar na rua pode parar um cara de moto com revólver apontado na sua cara, ou então com medo de abrir o portão de casa pra tirar o carro e se deparar com um marginal a espera pra te roubar.
