Inside The "North Korea" of Africa 🇪🇷: How It Really Is (

  • You may not have heard of this country, but perhaps you’ve seen it by another name: “the North Korea of Africa”. But that doesn’t quite tell the full story. There’s nowhere like Eritrea in Africa, or in the world for that matter. It’s a place where everyone must serve in the military, a place where most people have never used the internet, and a place where people have to stay in their lane, or else. But it’s also a country of extremely friendly and welcoming people. It’s very safe, you can walk any street in the country without a care in the world. And it’s extremely beautiful-while also remaining relatively undiscovered by the outside world.
    This was one of the trips I was most excited for. It took almost 2 months to secure the visa, but once I got it, I was on my way to Asmara, the capital. This is the record of my journey.

      @josephmaina-vm1lc no one wants to leave their home and live in another man's country, but when the options are limited due to the policy, suppression, and iron fist ruling of the government, then you'll do whatever it takes to survive. I've seen so many of my peers thrown in prison for years for no justified reason with no due process, no trial no judge. You just get picked up and disappear. It's like playing russian roulette every day you wake up.

    Dear Sabbatical, I believe you ignored to visit and show some of the most important historical sites in Asmara, like the US Military Camp (Kagnew Station) and Traits A, B, C, and D, which were constructed by the US Government to maintain control over communication satellites covering the Middle East, Far East, African Horn of Africa

    My personal takeaways as a person recently been to Eritrea
    - Super easy to go. I got my visa from the embassy in a few days and booked the flight and went ahead. Only thing is you need to register to the tourist office when you arrive.
    - Everywhere is very very very safe. I was hanging in the middle of nowhere at 3-4 am and no one even turns around and looks at you. Super chill
    - True, there is no internet or connectivity, however life is very slow paced. You low-key enjoy it
    - Great food, smiling people, cheap prices for europeans, amazing sea (in Massawa), untold history
    I would recommend. No need for clickbaits, good place to visit.

It is to easy to be a critic but Eritreans have been under continued colonialism, annexation, wars, Cold War & post Cold War geopolitics, unwarranted Sanctions for 20 odd years. Yet Eritreans inside & outside the country have stuck with their leadership and defeated all their enemies be it in the battlefield or diplomatically. Let me correct you on prices of Taxi! You are mistaken saying “everybody is supposed to pay 10 Nkf ”. Certain direct lines are 10 Nkf on a shared taxi. You wanted to go to Bahti Meskerem , there is no “Meskel Square” that’s an Ethiopian area in Addis Abeba, which is off the direct line, and so that is what we call a “contract” price, and it is normally 70 Nkf and it can be more depending on the distance ! You could have taken a shared taxi for 10 Nkf, and got off at Piazza Michaele and walked about 4-5 blocks to Bahti Meskerem. The taxi driver could have taken straight to Bahti Meskerem private, but since you offered him 30 Nkf he had to make up the difference by picking up passengers going on the direct line service. So, the taxi driver ended up making 30 Nkf from you, and 30Nkf from the other three, and basically earned 60Nkf short 10.

      I am not a fancy person, the only things i require are safety, clean water, electricity and internet. It is simply painful to see my beloved Eritrea like this : So sad to see, the people don’t deserve this, You can't blame everything on outside factors. 34 years of independence, nothing to show for it. Just reminiscent of the past glory. The epitome of LIVING IN THE PAST. the elderly dictator is taking the country down with him. He is good for nothing and keeps blaming TPLF and US for his failure. worst thing is the national service last forever. how hell is Eritrea to Eritreans. we are hard working people, but we are not fortunate enough to work in our homeland. We are scattered everywhere in the world leaving our families behind. Sad, very sad to see my country failed. People who support the dictator are Eritrea's main problem. We need educated people to lead not a militia. Governance matters. For those who are saying Sanction did suffer this country, you are wrong. The truth is, the brutal dictator running the land for the past 30 years locked the country purposely. he Can only survive in such situation. Ones Eritrea opens its border, ports, economy and Internet to the outside world, End of the story. The authoritarian regime will collapse in no time.

    Its a shame the way the west demonizes Eritrea.....such a beautiful country with its beautiful people.....my grandfather lived for 18 yrs in Asmara in the 20s til he met my grandmother in Keren and moved back to Sicily once the British pillaged and plundered it.....i always remember how fondly he spoke about the brave Ascari....la piccolo roma will always be in my heart

      Thanks for your informative facts from your grandfather. The Eritrean Ascari were brave that fought the war of Italy in Libya and Ethiopia. Unfortunately, although they were around 150 000 around WWII< they were brainwashed to only serve italy. When the British defeated Italy in Eritrea, Libya and Ethiopia, many died due to the war. They never had an idea nor organisation to fight for Eritrea in case Italy leave Eritrea. So, those who did not die in the war, just simply vanished in to their village and home which resulted Eritrea to be defenseless in every thing under the British. The British looted Eritrea and with the help of USA, handed Eritrea to primitive Ethiopia. Ethiopia was also freed by the British. It is was so unfortunate to be ruled by Ethiopia who had no modern solider nor government system. The war destroyed Eritrea up to today. Had those Ascaris some organisation to vision about Eritrea, Eritrea would not have been annexed by Ethiopia. The British also viewed the Eritrean Ascaris as their enemy for fighting the British bravely and wanted to destroy Eritrea . All the cycle of war we see now with Ethiopia is the result of the British.

    • @heruy8274
      @heruy8274 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@melathaile1561The ignorance. The British were not viewed as enemies. They were enemies to Italy but not to the people and soldiers of Eritrea and Ethiopia. When the British-led allied forces invaded Italian-occupied Eritrea in 1941, thousands of colonial soldiers deserted and fought alongside British forces against the Italians. This was because the British had promised that they would assist them in materializing their national aspirations, which had been repressed under racist Italian rule, if they deserted the Italian army and fought for the allied cause. There was also widespread desertions in the second Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935. Italian sources themselves attributed many of the setbacks they had in conquering Ethiopia to these desertions. The date Italy was defeated was the day political activists and intellectuals were allowed to organize and formed the first nationalist organization to negotiate with the British in regards to the fullfilment of their war time promises, so you are wrong. The British did not simply hand Eritrea to Ethiopia. Half of Eritrea's people wished to unite with Ethiopia. That is a historically documented fact. And many of ex colonial soldiers became armed shiftas and resorted to terrorize the Italian community giving they were widely suspected of financing the independence camp. That is one reason why many Eritreans wanted to unite with Ethiopia. They did not want to be under continued Italian domination in a independent state. Read a book, learn your history, and stop being a victim.

Spare me your cheap narrative of self-reliance. Its embarassing to hear such cheap narratives in 2024. No amount of self-congratulation and hollow rethoric is going to change the fact that Eritrea remain to be one of the poorest and least countries in the world with no universities and little internet access. That is the fruit of your non-existent self-reliance plainly visible in this video for the whole world to see.
