Don't Buy A Wireless Camera Until You See The Risks

  • Wireless cameras VS Wired cameras, both have their advantages but most people don't understand the risks involved in a wireless system. Today I'm comparing an 8 channel, 4K, PoE security camera system to a wireless equivalent.
    This video is sponsored by Napcat, all opinions are my own.
    Napcat's N2814 is 4K, has 24/7 Recording, Colour night vision, 2-Way talk, Spotlights, warning lights, an F1.0 Super Aperture, and an 8Channel NVR
    UPDATE During follow up testing I did find that my 4K cameras struggled to show lettering when the sun was in front of the subject. This was the case for both my Napcat cameras, and my wireless 4K cameras too. If you have a requirement for capturing car number plates or similar then you will need to consider the location of the camera as they can struggle to capture detail of reflective surfaces when the sun is directly in front of the subject

    I remember when wireless was becoming a big thing and people were all like, "Oh, you don't want a WIRED connection, that's so old!" And I remember thinking, but you still need a wire to power the thing, so it's not truly wireless, is it? So yeah, wireless cameras made no real sense to me, especially when they are capable of PoE. You need to run a wire anyway to power it, why not make it a cable that powers it AND handles the data?

      I agree, but some of the solar powered wireless cameras are next level to be fair. Still obviously suffer with a lot of what I've talked about in the video, but from a convenience perspective, and for renters they are a god send.

    This looks like a great system for folks that just want a security camera system. When I spent some time in retail, we sold a lot of those to folks that simply wanted to set things up and have them run. (Not, of course, the hip thrusters of [the home automation system that shall not be named]) The fact that you can just connect it up to a monitor and don't even need to use the app is a plus for such folks. And, of course, it has a lot of updated features from the ones I used to sell back when Palm Pilots roamed the Earth.
    I, of course, would set this up to play the Dennis Nedry "Ah, ah, ah" voice clip, but I suspect most of the targeted consumers for this product and nearly all burglars wouldn't get that.
    You did a very good explanation of why wired cameras are almost always better than wireless for imaging and features. The only downside is running the cables, which can be loads of fun depending on how your home or business is constructed. (I remember one case where a cable run needed to go through 16 inches of doubled-up cinder block. Fun times.)
    Aside: When I saw the Amber Heard bit, my mind immediately went to what kind of Batman-esque sound effect panels would be "appropriate" for such a thing. I can't unthink those and I can't even explain my guffawing to my spouse and daughter. Ah well, if they're not used to such things by now, they haven't been paying attention (which might just be the best course of action.)
    One more time, I have to thank you for the "What's wrong with it?" section. I really appreciate your thoroughness, especially in this section.

    I've currently got a reolink wired system and this looks like a great alternative to upgrade with. Do you know if it works with standard poe switches or has to connect directly to the nvr? Reolink seem to have this proprietary poe nonsense set up so you can detect the camera but not use it.
    If possible I'd want to have the cameras connectto my switch in the loft, but the nvvr by the TV.

      Reolink can use standard POE switches via the WAN connection. Some NVR and Camera packages need a direct NVR connection for connectivity. My system has been running a couple of years faultlessly. Non WiFi of course.

    Paul, all of these AI features have been available for years on proper NDAA compliant cameras such as Uniview. Wired will always be better & by some margin. The amount of power a camera draws is increasing all the time with full colour at night & light/audio modes/4k etc making battery powered units unfit for purpose.

  • @gordon861
    @gordon861 2 месяца назад

    Was sounding really good until the no RTSP, no ONVIF bit. So you are locked to using their cameras and viewing from there app or HDMI. Based on how closed this is, I am guessing that the POE is locked down to the point that the POE only works between the camera and the NVR rather than allowing you to plug a camera into any POE port on your home network? This will mean that you will need to have a bunch of wires all going to this box.
    For comparison, my current 4K system is made by Dahua, can run eight ONVIF 4K cameras from any manufacturer, that just need to be connected to the home network. So if I want to bury the NVR at the bottom of a cupboard I just need to supply a single ethernet and power lead and I am sorted. For viewing, I just use a web browser on the PC or an Android TV box running a CCTV viewer app, and for viewing remotely I just VPN into the home network and view as if I am local using a CCTV app. My cameras also have a card in them so even if the NVR is found I still have the most recent recordings stored on them.
    In summary, no matter how decent this seems, I would never recommend that anyone buys a closed system. This setup was so close to being right.

  • @mikeward1701
    @mikeward1701 3 месяца назад

    I still maintain the best, most economical, and practical solution for most people is indoor cameras on your windows/sills facing outward.
    You can have 24/7 recording, backed up to SD card or a hub/server, for a lot cheaper than some of these external cameras.
    The shortcoming of lack of night vision can be overcome with LED or infrared floodlights, either stuck to the interior side of the window or mounted externally.

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  3 месяца назад +3

      Doesn’t the IR LED reflect off the window and blind the camera? I only found an indoor camera facing out the window was an option with cameras that did colour night vision.

    • @mikeward1701
      @mikeward1701 3 месяца назад

      @@paulhibbert Yes, you will either need to use conventional LED floodlights, or provide another source of IR light (external IR floodlights, or internal against the window so they can’t reflect back) and tape over the cameras own IR LEDs.

Same with av speakers, saw linus trade is av speajers that needed a wire to go to to them for power and signal for onr that still needed a cable and lost connection constantly. All 8 of my cameras are running to a NVR which is have RSVP'd into my home assistant to allow for frigate and to add some functionality to both my spotlight and seeing my camera feed from anywhere and these are some super dirt cheap analog cameras that have great quality. Also had enough issues with my smart distribution board loosing wifi (not often happens like 1 day every 2 months) despite it having it's own router 2 meters away from the board. Also batteries are annoying and if it needs power anyway why not just run a signal cable instead have 100% reliable and unjammable cameras?

    I’m not going to lie, this system looks poor. Local and POE is the way forward when possible, and that’s what I have, but there are far better WiFi systems I would choose over this. I think you are confusing WiFi cameras with Battery cameras like Ring etc, which use WiFi. I think that’s an important distinction to make for people who are not knowledgeable in this area. Plenty of great permanently powered wifi cameras on the market. Including professional kit with ultra high quality images, far better than these.

      @@paulhibbertReolink NVR with four 4K cameras is available for £350, and refurbished often cheaper. Slightly more yes, but for the extra you get masses more functionality, flexibility and a mature system from a manufacturer that been around for years and innovating. I’ve never heard of this company, so you have to put a lot of trust into them sticking around and providing updates. Also, proper LED floodlights that many camera have are a much better deterrent than flashing red and blue ones, which are more of a novelty than anything. You would have to be a bit mental to buy this system to be honest. Just my personal opinion though, I await your contractually obligated witty response about why I’m wrong (jokes aside, keep up the good work fella, you do make me laugh 😊)
