- This Aqara E1 Smart Home Zigbee 3.0 radiator thermostat can be installed in literally 30 seconds and is one of the cheapest you can buy, Tado has one of the Best Smart Radiator valves on the market but it's hard to ignore the price difference, question is which is better?

Aqara's Zigbee TRV Smart Thermostatic Radiator Valve system works with Alexa, works with google, works with Apple Home kit, and most importantly works with Home Assistant directly using MQTT and ZHA, but also via the Apple Homekit integration.

I followed your link and amazon want £93.27 plus £10.60 delivery. Not exactly cheap is it?
They've sold out. You're looking at scalpers prices.
@@paulhibbert Bummer , I missed out too, that'll teach me to watch your video a day late :(
Thank you very much for the review! I live in the US and have 8 radiators. I've been wanting something like this for a while now.
Several years ago when we purchased this home we swapped the seized valves for new manual valves. Which helped out a lot at the time. With costs constantly increasing I've been thinking about converting them to TRV. Now with this as an option I believe this summer when the boiler is not running I have a new project 😁
Hello radiator person in the US. I’m about to become one, too, so I’m doing my rEsEaRcH. That’s when I happened on your comment.
So far, I don’t see indication this came to the US market. Were you able to get your hands on it? If so, what’s your experience? Are they compatible?
What’s your experience either with this or whatever other solution you may have gone for?
I’ve never had radiators and this move is to a cold climate in a house I expect will have costlier utilities so any wisdom is greatly appreciated.
Bought 6 of these in the Black Friday week sales for like £46 each! So far I like them and they work well with my Hive thermostat with a few automations in HomeKit and all is good. Can start saving ok heating bills now thanks to Aqara!
Hey Tom - when you say works well with your hive thermostat, do you mean it works well for you controlling with hive and these separately. Or have you managed to get them to talk to each other??
Well done, easy and simple concept. Not sure why it hasn’t come out before
Got one of these and on the whole works really well, pairing it with the external temperature sensor does mean temperature control is much more accurate. Only thing that lets it down for me is the smart scheduling which is basic, no option for 5+2 for example and you can only three separate temperature options in the schedule itself
going to look into these because of the external sensors, we have water based under floor heating with an external distribitor, that way i can put sensors in the rooms, and the knobs in the technical room on the distribitor..... FINALY THERE MAYBE A SOLUTION FOR US!!!!!! thanks paul for bringing this video.
@@gerysteylaertsas all the physical controls are in one place you might be better to have dumb electricial actuators into something like a raspberry pi with a relay board. Much much cheaper..
When moving house I inherited and then expanded a Netatmo Smart Thermostat and Radiator valve set up. Good concept bit in practice breaking all the time and sucking batteries dry (in days in some cases). Turning heating on in Autumn just became a stress.
Yesterday, following good feedback from x2 family members, I bought the full Evohome set up - controller and radiator valves. Quite expensive, but I'm hoping high quality and with none of the Ne-shat-mo issues!
These videos always make me smile. I watch them even if they are not relevant to my setup :¬}
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!
Thank you 👍, Please more collaborations, I Need It!! More from Lewis (awesome channel)
I didn't know that there were that many people still using radiators. Great video and as always great slap and comedic entertainment. Thanks
I love these - I've had these for a few months now
Always laugh when I see a video from you, even before clicking on it. Love how you show us humor and facts. 😍
Thanks for this, Paul. I Have been contemplating smart thermostats for a while.
I saw these on offer a month ago after watching your video but sat on it and they went back up to full price!
Just seen them go back on offer and was sure to use your affiliate link as a thankyou for the review.
A small tip. I have set the Immersion for 30 minutes a day @ 6am (unless the bath automation triggers) and I always fill the kettle with hot water to save energy and speed boiling. I also fill the dishwasher with hot water when I am filling it immediately before a wash, makes a 15/25% difference in power usage per wash, since it has to warm water to 55c and then to 65c.
I also use WiFi bulbs as tell-tales for the Immersion and heat, humidity, movement for my Tegu.
This would actually be really useful for me. I live in an apartment with centralized heating that I have to pay for how much I actually use. So limiting the tempatures during day time and when not at home would help me reduce my bills even if I don't have a boiler.
Another good video. I am setting up a home assistant platform at the min. Good point about using these in rooms where I want to reduce heating while not in use.
They works so good with home assistant!
Happy Saturday Paul! Thanks.
Nice video, thank you. I went for TADO.
If your hand was being burned by your radiators, turn your bloody flow temperature down and save 15% for free.
You have really made me laugh this morning.
Great review I did look at smart thermostats a while ago and decided against it but now found myself revisiting cheers 😂😂.
Hope you have a great weekend

Just ordered 6, as this is closer to what I wanted for my house than tado. Black friday deal and a kick back to Paul. Nice.
By far one of your best videos
I needed this laugh today. Loved how Lewis and Stu are now involved. Please do this crossover more.
You are hilarious I absolutely love it! I come here for informative entertainment, but most importantly to be baited!
Paul, if it makes you feel any better, I watched this video and the other one about the other radiator thermostat, beginning to end, and haven't seen a radiator in a home in at least 25 years. I have been baited by the master at the highest level!
🤣
I’ve installed a Drayton Wiser of 3 TRVs, replaced the boiler hub by removing the existing one (which happened to be an older Drayton unit) and mounting it on top with a couple of screws, very very easy DIY.
Mariano have you installed the Drayton wiser system?
@@TheDarylSharp Im also not clear on what @mariano means. I bought a wiser kit 2. I was looking for cheaper compatible zigbee TRVs to add as I have 14 radiators in my home. Just found out my local plumbers shop has the wiser TRVs for round £32. Will buy as many as possible
@@TheDarylSharp yes. It does require a hub to talk to the boiler, and is more capable.
@@luke3917 the property I’ve moved to had a Drayton Digistat 3RF connected to a combi boiler. I’ve easily replaced it with a Wiser system of 3 TRVs + hub. And I’ve integrated it to Home Assistant with the integration available. Works a charm.
@@marianobarcia Ah OK. I am replacing my old Drayton LP 241 with the new Wiser kit. Should be plug n play. I need to sort the thermostat on the wall meaning disabling so as not to interfere with the system. Thanks for the response
I saw this channel because of your unfoctunate video about abuse, and i am glad i made the descision to stay. Youre a smart, funny, and a good person. I hope your life never gets that grim again.
i managed to buy 4 tado rad stats for £199 (toolstation). and a starter kit for £99 (screwfix) so about as cheap as you can get (i do have another 3 rads but with the traditional trvs turned down in the room we dont use, and the others are on medium (hallway and bathroom) it has a good balance. and a full control system with the boiler being controlled too. the house is warmer in the rooms we needed it to be, but i can tell from the smart meter we have used less gas than previous months even with it being colder. so a big thumbs up from me
Love your reviews great alternative to using tardo TVRs which I love but can't control is the internet is lost work well with my nest thermostat, love how your turning all the other Tech RUclipsrs into British inuendor nerds. British humour is the best.
Aqara had these on offer for £46 so I bought one, great little device until Screwfix last mont started selling the TCP TRV for £19.99 which is an exact copy of the Aqara E1 in design, functionality. Pity they stopped selling them though 😢
Do not stop the jokes, keep being you, it's why I tune in every week!
On a tech note, I haven't seen a radiator since I left the UK 20 years ago, these would have been really cool back in the day, now if only you could review some sort of smart forced air register device for those of us that live in the US, though I guess you'd need a US house to test it in! You can use mine and I get to keep the devices! lol
Ok I’m err going to say something I’ve never said to another man let alone one I’ve never met. I love you man, Paul I’ve been looking for this precise answer to such a prescient situation for many of us. God bless your sir!

Would be good to see you do a full review of smart heating systems Paul. Genius Hub and Salus Smart Home are both worth a look
Yea, my energy bill is mostly the standing charge... so if you can halve that I'd be amazed! 🙂

I run Long Range infrared panels using shelly plug s and home assistant, where i use BroadLink RM4 with temp sensors (real time measuring) as a thermostat.
It was a good video, and more people should see it.

Mate, I giggled out loud with your master of bating skit. Brilliant to get Stu involved.
Stu is awesome ❤️
30 seconds of all those lights running looks like it will run me about half my light bill!
🤣 It's actually not so bad because they're all LED based lights and most of them set to a reasonably low brightness for ambience. But yeah, they are on most of the time because I work and live in that room!
Ooh the Conbee (thrust, thrust). See it's pretty easy to write new material. Have I baited you... 😊
quick note - you can install the tado TRVs without the boiler controller. They’ll open/close on schedules/manually just like normal only they’ll restrict the heat like these will - you set your boiler controller as normal. I moved from Tado to Nest as the thermostat but I’m still using the Tado TRVs for room temperature monitoring and adjusting
Need to be careful that the boiler isn't on when all trv's are closed though
There should always be a bypass radiator without any TRV. I've updated the description and pinned comment to this effect ❤️
@@paulhibbert Unless you have an auto-bypass valve fitted, in which case you can have TRVs on all radiators.
@@paulhibbert yes. Bathrooms n hallways by door radiator valves
I was looking to add smart valves to my heating system to gain individual smart heating on a room-by-room basis.
I moved into a house with the Hive smart thermostat but didn’t really want to tie myself further into this architecture by buying Hive valves. I’ve already bought into the Aqara line of products so ideally wanted to go this route.
I anticipated that smart valves from third party manufactures wouldn’t talk to the Hive thermostat directly but was hoping that some smart integration through HomeKit would resolve this, sadly not and your video has confirmed the big drawback with these ‘Limiters’ as you have called them.
The main problem occurs in this example:
A request is made to heat a bedroom to 20˚c by the Aqara Valve.
Main thermosta located in the living room is set at 21˚c now if the living room is already at 21˚c then the bedroom will not be able to achieve the desired temperature as the boiler is shut off.
One option that has been suggested would be to set the temperature of the main thermostat to a higher value. However, the boiler would now run for the entire period of the schedule as the valve in the living room would have closed having reached it’s set temperature. Any cost savings would now be negated; indeed, it could end up costing more.
Needless to say, I will be returning the Aqara Valve Thermostats until a more ‘joined up’ solution can be found.
Ideally what is needed is to be able to turn off the Hive's thermostat functionality and simply use it as a switch to turn the boiler on/off triggered by the valves, but I don't think this is going to be on the cards anytime soon.
I know you said you don't want to tie into the hive more but I'm sure if you use hive TRVs you can do what you have stated here.
Can also use the aqara relay to command the boiler off and on (or just create a task to tell the nest to turn off and on)
Note if your hive/nest is in your warmest location your thermostat is likely in the incorrect location (TRVs are heating limiters not heaters l, well unless you have remote control for boiler to turn on)
I just got the whole lot now, m2 hub/relay for boiler control/a load of temperature sensors and 3 trvs (could do with 4 more but need to replace the valves under the trvs because they bounce when nearly shutting off (probably just replace 4 radiators with the fittings but that's probably cost more then the aqara gear I just got)
amazon black Friday weekend discounts
A wee suggestion
Paul. If your radiators are that hot maybe you could look at getting weather compensation fitted. It ain’t even that techie, but saves money. Heetgeek saved me a fortune in recent months.
Think you’ll find it’s 6 million and 1! Lol
Bright weekend ahead thanks to your awesome video!
Thanks as always dude! ❤️
Nearly stopped watching, then got baited In. Very pleased!
You have been baited!!
Intriguing. Love the humour. 😂
Don’t zone your heat pumps peeps, that will drive up your flow temperature, reduce your efficiency hugely and most often cost you more. See Heat Geek videos for details. Some weather compensate gas boilers also will cost more.
I just installed the Tado kit on my combi boiler yesterday. When they say it's an "easy" job they don't take into consideration having to fix some of the existing wiring. Learning from your install I did as much cabling as I could BEFORE attaching the devices to the wall in the cupboard.
As much as I hammed it up in the original video I was amazed at how good the instructions were, at least for moving from a nest install!
@@paulhibbert You hammed it up? That's so unlike you ;)
🤣
Hi Paul, as usual funny and informative at the same time. Love your videos. Just one question .. can you connect Aqara products to an Aqara hub and home assistant at the same time and use both?
I made a video about that one some time ago, and it shows all sensors through z2m 😊
wiser radiator thermostats are cheaper at the moment but you have to buy a hub, up side is that they are proven to work long term & they work without a wifi signal
There's an elephant in the room here. If you have one 'main' system thermostat (in the living room for example) the whole house temperature is based on that room. So if you use a smart thermostat to turn off a radiator in a room upstairs, it will get cold, but will only heat up again (when scheduled to heat) when the living room cools enough to demand heat. In this scenario the living will heat up quickly, then turn off the call for heat, but the cold room upstairs will not have reached temperature and will have to wait for the next time the living room calls for heat, in the meantime cooling. If you leave a room too cold for too long, it can lead to damp, condensation issues etc. I had Meross thermostats and found this, do not use them now. A good move is to move your main system thermostat to the room you mainly live in, some are in hallways with front doors etc, so temp can fluctuate leading to many heat calls, uneven room temperatures and higher bills. Move your main system thermostat if needed.
I cant agree more I use Hive Trv and the money saving is amazing so if you dont already have a system in place this is amazing
Very nice. I even don't have radiators and still watch it till the end. YOU master baiter...., now I want to have radiators just to be able to install these thermostats. :D :D
Love you!
P.S. don't tell anybody :/
🤣 I had no idea radiators were such an English thing!
Oh Paul, you have me laughing every time brother. I wish the US had heating like you do, I’d buy this. Instead with have heated air that blows though the house via ducting.
Could you set up a routine with Alexa so when the room hits a lower threshold it tells a nest thermostat to come in for say 30 minutes. Then the trv could then do the opposite?
Fist off, huge fan of the channel!
Aren’t these just doing the same job as a standard TRV but in a more aesthetically pleasing way?
These won’t save you money on your heating bill if the boiler is still firing to the temperature on your room stat.
I’ve got a Tado system (based on your review 😉) and already seeing the benefits of the boiler only firing when heat is needed per room.
Whilst the initial cost is more expensive, it’s Tado all the way for me 😊
Morning dude! The boiler heat enough water to heat the radiators, the less radiators there are to heat the less energy is required at the boiler.
The difference between these and the old school radiator thermostats is the scheduling via the app and the smart home functionality. My rooms are only heated in line with me and Neeshas daily schedule of where we are in the house throughout the week.
Glad your tado system is working well for you man. Its definitely a more complete system! ❤️
The less radiators that are taking heat from the circulating water, the lower will be the boiler load.
@@paulhibbert thanks for the info, makes sense, keep up the good work 👌😁
Yay! It's king of the HA Nerds Lewis!
Loved this episode. 😂
I own 3 of these and have them trigger my boiler on and off if a temperature sensor for its room go we s below a set temperature.
It took a lot of work to automate with controls in Home Assistant but it's allowing us to heat the house more effectively and cheaper, great device.
I think, in case, you want some radiators with traditional valves, set to all open not to force on the boiler pump. I will keep my 2 bathrooms radiator valves full open for instance. I am no plumber, just some common sense :-) happy to have a plumber point of view though!
Hi Paul, I would really like you to look into some technologies which are smart and suitable for flats or apartments, that are only electric. Such as IR radiators, these are possibly the most efficient, smart heating devices that you can have in an apartment or flat that has only electricity as it’s power source
I didn't skip the joke. I was playing a game and couldn't. 🤣
I will buy a few when the complete zha support is there.
I believe they are fully supported under Zigbee2MQTT.
Hopefully these sort of devices will eventually come in alternative covers, chrome to match the bathroom one, black to match the poncy 6` piece of modern art.
Hi Paul just a question do these need the hub if you have the echo plus or studio with a ZigBee hub builtin.
I've got the Drayton Wiser setup and there TRV's are cheaper and work local in their system and work on HA. Great system and much cheaper than Tado
Paul, great video, just what I was looking for!!
Do these have any competition? Stand-alone smart TRVs that can work with an existing smart thermostat, to limit individual rooms/zones? TiA
Nice vid. Need advice. Best plugin smart plug for use in 'HOME ASSISTANT'. if it has power consumption measurement also, that's a bonus. Cheers. Keith
First off - great info. Many thanks! The external temperature sensor pairing in the app is something that I'm failing to find an equivilent on Hive, not sure if it doesn't exist or if my Google-Foo is poor. Does anyone know if this "external temperature sensor" can also be done in the Hive ecosystem?
I love the idea of these TRVs, but with 16 radiators in the house, it all becomes very expensive. Also, with 2 kids, most rooms are occupied at some point.
What I have found though is by using Aqara thermostats in each room, I can monitor and better balance the heating throughout the house, making it more comfortable. Unfortunately, one of them keeps going offline and needs bringing closer to the hub to reconnect; so much for a zigbee mesh!
Buy one of those zigbee usb boosters, should help.
You need a hardwired zigbee device such as a light bulb or power plug and put it halfway between, battery powered devices can only be at the end of a mesh and can't relay other messages. Once you have done this you might also need to forget the thermostat and then rejoin it as some zigbee devices are sticky and won't rediscover the mesh other are fine and will happily move to better mesh nodes.
@@ingy23 I have about 50 hue bulbs that use zigbee, shouldn’t that work?
@@simonf9121 yep they should work great, are they part of the same network ie are the bulbs connected directly to your zigbee network or do they connect to a hue hub?
They connect to the Hue hub
Hi Paul, will these work with the drayton wiser thermostat and controls?? The controls look easy to fit to existing connection so was leaning that way. Thanks.
Will they work if I don't have a smart Thermo? You mentioned it's like a limiter- does that mean I would need to buy one for every radiator in the house as my heating would be "always on"?
Your channel is becoming one of my favourites btw as a new homeowner 😁
Got several Zigbee 3.0 Tuya TRVs made for Essentials DE, same TRVs but work with Tuya or Smart life, work just fine in HA via ZHA. I'm pretty sure that those are the same , just different Firmware , at least they look the same and work the same except under Tuya. So I guess it's just a sponsored video since those are not special at all.
I threw out my Smartthings hub for Hubitat long ago. Life has been good since.
I have a tado smart thermostats without the tado controller and works just the same way with the nest thermostat turn the whole heating on or off
Dude, i really enjoy watching your Videos even this one joke, we all know 😀
I have a forced air system. This is rather nice. I wonder if you have any air vent solutions that aren't insanely priced.
Love Aqara stuff, but Drayton Wiser is cheaper and can work both with and without a dedicated Thermostat. Around 40 quid on eBay, works with Zigbee2MQTT. I have whole system which I installed two years ago, love it.
@@jj_uk No, In my opinion, this is not necessary for a smart device. You either do this through the dedicated app, schedule or in my case my HA does it. I don't touch them except for pairing or changing batteries.
Now use tado but i try aqara because i tru some product and i like it. About turn off/on heater i thing this scenario: i install 3 aqara thermostat with aqara one chanel relay to heater. If radiator 1 or r2 or r3 is on then turn on relay. If r1 and r2 and r3 is off then turn off relay
On the current Black Friday deal, it would cost me £794.41. I think there's definite savings to be had but I still don't have that kind of cash. Even just replacing ones in the bedrooms comes to nearly £400. They're still going to need tomcome down more before I can afford them. At least prices are going in the right direction.
Ngl, I feel a little dissapointed that there wasn't a joke about "It's coming home". Despite that, great video. I don't use thermostat here in this part of the world, however, I can't have my week fullfilled without a Paul Hibbert video
