Grima is something you should dive into. It’s a special kind of thing. Nice production (which you might not like) but, great cold and ethereal vibes with trancey melodies. Very catchy and atmospheric.
Happy that Grima made it to the list…. They are fucking awesome, saw them in Hamburg last year together with Kanonenfieber…. Awesome music and stage presence. They played with 3 guitars and no bass, that was crazy to see… Frank, gib denen echt mal ne Chance. Ist wirklich ne geile Band ;)

Great video! I'm genuinely surprised Forteresse didn't even make the honorable mentions list. They're easily in my top 5 of all time list. Also Kaevum not being there is surprising as Natur is one of the greatest BM albums of all time. Probably my top two BM albums are Metal Noir Quebecois from Forteresse and Natur from Kaevum. I would add the following (just my personal opinion after all): Tsjuder, Wayfarer, Agalloch, Winterfylleth, Watain, Imperialist, Blut aus Nord, Saor, Wolves in the Throne Room, Panopticon, Nightbringer, Deathspell Omega (in spite of the controversy surrounding their vocalist Mikko Aspa), Thantifaxath, Imperial Triumphant, Alcest, Amesoeurs, Les Discrets, Neo Inferno 262, Abduction, Gehinnom, Miserere Luminis, Harakiri for the Sky... The list goes on.
Great list. There are several bands listed that I love (Grima, Uada, Gaerea, Der weg einer Freiheit) and glad your audience knows great black metal when they hear it.
I would have loved to see more experimental BM, as much as i loved to see Lifelover and DWEF (one of my favourite BM bands for the last 10 years) there are so much more. Enslaved, Oranssi Pazuzu, Hail Spirit Noir, Dodheimsgard (they are also one of my favourite bands) Shining, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord and so much more.
Decent list, glad to see Spectral Wound here. I need to add three (?) more bands though: Misþyrming, especially their album Algleymi is nonstop brilliance, Harakiri for the Sky in general, (I love all their stuff) and Saor as well. Also, even if it's more experimental and changes style from album to album, but I have to mention Thy Catafalque, because it's my all time favourite and it's from my country. (+1 Wolf-Father album from Nidingr)

Regardless some of the bands in here that I've never heard of sound amazing and so this is a fantastic list for checking new bands out. Thanks Farvann!
Honestly I'm leaning more in to the atmospheric/melodic side of modern black metal, it was a bit nice to find a bunch of my favorite bands in that list, but the best thing is that now I have another bunch of new bands to listen, thanks Farvann!
Gaerea is one of my favourite bands atm, but my current favourites have been Batushka, Uada, Stormkeep, Spectral Wound, Groza, The Suns Journey Through the Night, WITR, Lamp of Murmuur and Panopticon 🤘
Alcest music is so different than everything I hear before, so inspiring band. Seen them live and it was good show, definitely deserves to be on list. Also Sylvaine is good artist inspired by Alcest, if anybody doesn't care if vocals are male or female then should give it a chance.
I'm so thankful for you making a video like this because I always love discovering "new to me" music, and as someone who is mostly stuck in 80's proto black metal and 90's bm from many parts of the world, post-2000 bands are a huge blindspot for me. LOL Like I wasn't shocked MGLA ranked so high because they're seriously one of the best bands in the whole genre, Batushka is also an overall favorite of mine, but most of these bands are quite new for me
This is an amazing list and full of a lot of my modern era favourites. I'll have some catching up to do on some of the others as well so thanks in advance for that!
Greetings from Germany Your Ranking is very interesting, thanks that you make this. Sorry for my bad English. My Top Ten 10. Le Dernier Adieu - Nordicwinter 9. Alpenpässe - Minenwerfer 8. The Ashes of Light - Lustre 7. Stella Polaris - Goatmoon 6. Songs to Leave - Forgotten Tomb 5. Fimbulwinter - Satanic Warmaster 4. Arrival Of The Plague Bearer - Order of Nosferat 3. Summoners of the Serpents Wrath - Sarkrista 2. Silent Legs Inter Arma - Mavorim 1. Erhabenheit - Gratzug
sad that Aegrus wasn't mentioned. The're awesome and painfully underrated. Djevel would have been #1 for me but I'm glad they made it to the top10 anyway ❤
Nice list! As the official hipster follower of this channel, I would like to add three bands that are quite famous (at least the first two) and a bit controversial (especially the first one): - Liturgy. I know that these Yankees are critiqued for their pretentiousness, but I've listened to their music and I can assure that it is a very interesting and eclectic re-reading of some tropes of black metal in a blissful/triumphant way. Albums like Aesthethica and H.A.Q.Q. are really excellent, and I highly recommend them if you want to try something different yet engaging. - Panopticon. Another great name in the US scene, with a quite distinctive interpretation of atmo-black that mixes the epicness of the godfathers Weakling with American folk music. I would consider this one-man project almost a "trve" version of John Fahey, in some weird sense. - Gnaw Their Tongues. This is surely not hipster black metal, if this reassures you. Another one-man project, this time from the Netherlands, that is quite notorious for its experimental/industrial/noise approach to black metal. Mories (the man behind GTT) is responsible for some of the most hellish, dark yet fascinating soundscapes that I've ever experienced, and it is strongly suggested. And that's it. Peace and love to y'all :) Edit: Whoops, Farvann already put Panopticon in its honorable mentions. Silly me.
Grima is not the LOTR reference. I've been at their show and asked one of the founding members about the name, he said it's their original idea and it's just a coincidence, but they respect LOTR. Seems like they didn't even know about Grima Wormtongue existing when they came up with that name.
Interesting list for sure. Will go for Fluisteraars, Wolves In the Throne Room, Panopticon, Oranssi Pazuzu, Misthyrming, Ultha, Afsky, Krallice, Mgla and Ash Borer
@hofandify I've heard everything from them including pre-vocals tracks They're great but not a contender for first place. Their composition is often too repetitive and without innovation. Hauntologist is better. 🙈
@@karpastaja7870 only their first album was good, afterwards their schtick got generic very fast. Also, which Batushka of the 20 ones out there so you mean?
Great list, but I think that "Sworn" from Norway would deserve a place in the ranking. Their recent albums are great, the last one "A Journey told through fire" is a blast.☺ Oh, and I would replace "Der Weg einer Freiheit" with "Imperium Dekadenz" because the latter creates one of the best melancholic, somber atmosphere of the whole scene. Their album "Dis Manibus" is hard to forget...
For those who like to discover "hidden gems" in BM - the band called Arnaut Pavle from Finland. Very fast, very rough and aggressive. Their song Carpet Bombing Nazareth is 1:44 of pure hell energy. Something opposite to 8 minute long atmospheric BM ballades.
My issue with these bands is that I never know what I might like and it might turn out to be NSBM. Peste Noire, for example. That snippet for them was top shelf music. But if it's NSBM, I want no part of it.
I wouldn't consider them NSBM, just edgy degenerates. The album shown in this video is their best IMO. If you want very overtly French black metal, Pensées Nocturnes is much better and not nearly as controversial afaik
@@milkwalkerjones633what album by Pensées Nocturnes would you recommend the most? I personally love Vacuum but I haven’t listened to anything else by them
They are self proclaimed "fascists", but as far as I know they're not NS... I don't know if it makes it any better but I'm usually still a bit wary of guys with KPN shirts of patches in public though.
the lists (including the honorable mentions) is like a day cruising through bandcamp trying to pick up something new, one of the great things about black metal choices abound
@@shix_666 Sielunvihollinen is fucking awesome. Agreed, Finnish BM is great. Finntroll is another great band from there (though I mostly like their first LP, Midnattens Widunder).
Interesting...i started listening to black Metal this year and a lot of bands i found are on this list, especially got hooked on Kanonenfieber and after listening to them 1914 and Minenwerfer also came on the radar pretty quickly^^
Thanks for the recommendations. Havukruunu became one of my favorite, if not my favorite FInnish black metal band in the last months. Also Moonlight Sorcery is a phenomenal band. Drudkh is one of the best from the 2000, same goes with Ungfell and Ellende.
I saw Grima live. It was such nice concert. One of the best I ever seen. They build a big atmosphere and then crush it down with an unrelented force of blastbeat.
@@Farvann All a matter of taste but I personally wouldn’t put them anywhere near the top. Peste Noire is #1, followed by Satanic Warmaster then Inquisition for me
Passéisme, Serpent Column, Kostnatění and Thantifaxath would be some of my suggestions. Also a little surprised to not see Odz Manouk in the honorable mentions.
Yeah I saw the Boris video where he said he watched Djevel with Fenriz, I was totally jealous 😆 I didn't know that about Lykanthrope being live singer with Krzystof, just saw them a few weeks ago too it was awesome 🤘🤘
Thanks! I am not a BM fan (sometimes listen Immortal and Satyricon). But I found some interesting staff - Uada sounds very good melodic and fast. Also Lifelover is good to hear!
Nice Teitanblood shirt!!! Other Honorable Mentions in my opinion: Dumal Aosoth Sinmara Death Worship Martrod Skaphe Tarnkappe Veles Diocletian Tetragrammicide Grafvitnir Nordjevel Esoctrilihum (sp) ... and many, many more lol
Some great recommendations in the list. Also shoutout to Gaerea. They're great. For Uada, the first album is a masterpiece and the following albums are fine but nearly on the level of the first.
Havukruunu I actually found out about through your channel, I think after something like 3 -4 skit videos Havukruunu started showing up in recommendations. Nocturnal Depression in the honourable mentions I can see because that is definitely an acquired taste you have to already be down the rabbit hole for that one. 20 minute long songs & of course Intermezzo from the Soundtrack for a Suicide:Opus II with the Columbine 9.1.1 call…chefs kiss as the kids say. With Lifelover they broke up out of respect for the member who passed away I can relate back in college the band I was in back then we lost our drummer & our friend to suicide & it just felt weird playing those songs without him. So we all agreed to end that band.
I revisited the first Batushka album the other day and it still absolutely slays. I'm still banging the "real Batushka" drum.

Honestly I'm leaning more in to the atmospheric/melodic side of modern black metal, it was a bit nice to find a bunch of my favorite bands in that list, but the best thing is that now I have another bunch of new bands to listen, thanks Farvann!
Sad to see that Mork and WTTR didn’t make the cut, great bands imo - but pretty hard to top what’s on the list
Gaerea is one of my favourite bands atm, but my current favourites have been Batushka, Uada, Stormkeep, Spectral Wound, Groza, The Suns Journey Through the Night, WITR, Lamp of Murmuur and Panopticon 🤘
Woods of desolation is on the List 🤘🖤🤘😀
so happy to see der weg einer freiheit here!! their entire discography is amazing
I would've put Alcest (yes, I consider blackgaze part of black metal), Falls of Rauros and Panopticon on that list. Still a good list, though.
Didnt Alcest essentially made Blackgaze what it is today ?
Alcest music is so different than everything I hear before, so inspiring band. Seen them live and it was good show, definitely deserves to be on list.
Also Sylvaine is good artist inspired by Alcest, if anybody doesn't care if vocals are male or female then should give it a chance.
Alcest were formed in 1999 according to metal archives
I'm so thankful for you making a video like this because I always love discovering "new to me" music, and as someone who is mostly stuck in 80's proto black metal and 90's bm from many parts of the world, post-2000 bands are a huge blindspot for me. LOL Like I wasn't shocked MGLA ranked so high because they're seriously one of the best bands in the whole genre, Batushka is also an overall favorite of mine, but most of these bands are quite new for me
Congrats on 100k
Absolutely reccomend Wiegedood, insane black metal from Belgium!
It's sad that Trist (from Czech republic) is not mentioned, the best depressive/melancholic black metal I've heard
I think they’re a dead band though
This is an amazing list and full of a lot of my modern era favourites. I'll have some catching up to do on some of the others as well so thanks in advance for that!
Shame to see Lustre didn't make the list 😔
Greetings from Germany
Your Ranking is very interesting, thanks that you make this. Sorry for my bad English.
My Top Ten
10. Le Dernier Adieu - Nordicwinter
9. Alpenpässe - Minenwerfer
8. The Ashes of Light - Lustre
7. Stella Polaris - Goatmoon
6. Songs to Leave - Forgotten Tomb
5. Fimbulwinter - Satanic Warmaster
4. Arrival Of The Plague Bearer - Order of Nosferat
3. Summoners of the Serpents Wrath - Sarkrista
2. Silent Legs Inter Arma - Mavorim
1. Erhabenheit - Gratzug
Er ist Deutscher! 😂😂
@@BanselHansel war mir bis eben unbekannt ich danke für die Information🙂
sad that Aegrus wasn't mentioned. The're awesome and painfully underrated.
Djevel would have been #1 for me but I'm glad they made it to the top10 anyway ❤
Nice list. Turned me on to some bands that I've slept on.
If you like Akhlys then check out Nightbringer, same guy plays there.
I am a bit surprised Walknut is not included in the list
I highly recommend you to check out their album “Graveforests and Their Shadows”
Nice list! As the official hipster follower of this channel, I would like to add three bands that are quite famous (at least the first two) and a bit controversial (especially the first one):
- Liturgy.
Peace and love to y'all :)
Edit: Whoops, Farvann already put Panopticon in its honorable mentions. Silly me.
Panopticon is awesome! More like post-black/folk metal, but it's just awesome!
Grima is not the LOTR reference. I've been at their show and asked one of the founding members about the name, he said it's their original idea and it's just a coincidence, but they respect LOTR. Seems like they didn't even know about Grima Wormtongue existing when they came up with that name.
Drudkh, Kekht Aräkh
Interesting list for sure. Will go for Fluisteraars, Wolves In the Throne Room, Panopticon, Oranssi Pazuzu, Misthyrming, Ultha, Afsky, Krallice, Mgla and Ash Borer
Hot take: Mgla is good, but not #1
You obviously don't know their discography if you think they don't deserve the first place on this list🤪
@hofandify I've heard everything from them including pre-vocals tracks
They're great but not a contender for first place. Their composition is often too repetitive and without innovation. Hauntologist is better. 🙈
You‘re right because Panzerfaust are #1
Batushka is better
@@karpastaja7870 only their first album was good, afterwards their schtick got generic very fast.
Also, which Batushka of the 20 ones out there so you mean?
Great list, but I think that "Sworn" from Norway would deserve a place in the ranking. Their recent albums are great, the last one "A Journey told through fire" is a blast.☺ Oh, and I would replace "Der Weg einer Freiheit" with "Imperium Dekadenz" because the latter creates one of the best melancholic, somber atmosphere of the whole scene. Their album "Dis Manibus" is hard to forget...
this list needs more kanonenfieber and minenwerfer
Yeahhhhhh thats good stuff
I would recommend Grand Guignol Orchestra first.
I wouldn't worry too much about those guys, if they're being that brazen about it there's definitely a degree of social maladjustment there lol
the lists (including the honorable mentions) is like a day cruising through bandcamp trying to pick up something new, one of the great things about black metal choices abound
Havukruunu is my favorite modern BM band. Uinuos syömein sota (their latest) and Kelle surut soi are my favorites from them.
havukruunu is lovely but personally i prefer Sielunvihollinen. Finnish bm fucks!
@@shix_666 Sielunvihollinen is fucking awesome. Agreed, Finnish BM is great. Finntroll is another great band from there (though I mostly like their first LP, Midnattens Widunder).
Dude, yes! These are all on point and couldn't agree more
0:33 ah yes Mgła. Polska gurom💪🇵🇱
Very proud to see gaerea on this list! Big hug from Portugal
Interesting...i started listening to black Metal this year and a lot of bands i found are on this list, especially got hooked on Kanonenfieber and after listening to them 1914 and Minenwerfer also came on the radar pretty quickly^^
sznur , none , thy light , gospod , silhouette , vermilia , kævum , fosk , blood abscission , violet cold ... i think all of these bands deserve an appearance there
Man so glad Drudkh is on this list, all of their albums are good and never gets boring imo (despite what a lot of people say about them).
Thanks for the recommendations. Havukruunu became one of my favorite, if not my favorite FInnish black metal band in the last months. Also Moonlight Sorcery is a phenomenal band. Drudkh is one of the best from the 2000, same goes with Ungfell and Ellende.
Wanderer by Kekht Arakh it’s HILARIOUS 😂😂
He sounds like a mumble rapper and he does rap gestures in the music video
Apparently he's a drainer.
You sir earn my respect for the Teitanblood shirt alone. Hands down my favorite band ever, and I like all genres of music in general.
Have you heard of Mayhem? Brutal Black Metal, there is also a great docu about them called sons of chaos
I saw Grima live. It was such nice concert. One of the best I ever seen. They build a big atmosphere and then crush it down with an unrelented force of blastbeat.
Best modern BM band is Mgla?? What the fuck 😂
It's the people
@@Farvann All a matter of taste but I personally wouldn’t put them anywhere near the top. Peste Noire is #1, followed by Satanic Warmaster then Inquisition for me
@@Axeheavy322 Inqusition didn't count as "modern" because they're from the 90s. So does Satanic Warmaster even though the first release is from 2000
@@Farvann You’re right about Inqusition but I’d say Satanic Warmaster counts, I mean the first demo was literally in 2000…
Furia, Massemord (Pol) and 1914 :) great list btw
Misthryming must be in top 10
So Lykanthrop is the vocalist for the *real* Batyushka? I’d add Advent Sorrow & Eskapism to the list 👍🏻
Aquilus, Forest Stream (formed in 95, but albums released
Passéisme, Serpent Column, Kostnatění and Thantifaxath would be some of my suggestions. Also a little surprised to not see Odz Manouk in the honorable mentions.
Can definitely state that Passéisme and Thantifaxath are both absolutely wild in the best ways.
I didn't see your videos before but when I opened it the first thing came to my mind was "whether Mgla will be in the list?" :D
Yeah I saw the Boris video where he said he watched Djevel with Fenriz, I was totally jealous 😆 I didn't know that about Lykanthrope being live singer with Krzystof, just saw them a few weeks ago too it was awesome 🤘🤘
Armagedda, Skogen, Mgla, Stormkeep, Lifelover, Kvaen, Grá, Sportlov, Pestilent Hex, Spectral Wound, Havukruunu, Asagraum.
Very happy to see Sale Freux and Pensees Nocturnes in the honorable mentions... Fuckin great content man
It amazes me how nobody mentioned The Spirit, unfortunate they're so unpopular yet they are so amazing.
Amazing band, was at their London show and it was truly excellent
Thanks! I am not a BM fan (sometimes listen Immortal and Satyricon). But I found some interesting staff - Uada sounds very good melodic and fast. Also Lifelover is good to hear!
Nice Teitanblood shirt!!! Other Honorable Mentions in my opinion:
Dumal
Aosoth
Sinmara
Death Worship
Martrod
Skaphe
Tarnkappe
Veles
Diocletian
Tetragrammicide
Grafvitnir
Nordjevel
Esoctrilihum (sp)
... and many, many more lol
Forgot to mention Black Cilice.
That's a very good list, but ma boys are seriously missing Autumn Nostalgie
Great list. Really like that these comments are going to be a gold mine of bands I might not have heard of. Thanks for all the recs everyone🤘
Some great recommendations in the list. Also shoutout to Gaerea. They're great. For Uada, the first album is a masterpiece and the following albums are fine but nearly on the level of the first.
He’ll o and greetings from Poland 🇵🇱 . Thanks Farvann r your channel
I fucking love your channel, Farvann 🤘🏼
I’ve been binge watching all your videos all day and learned a couple of good bands from you
Havukruunu I actually found out about through your channel, I think after something like 3 -4 skit videos Havukruunu started showing up in recommendations.
Glad Ungfell made it to your honorable mentions list. Great band, they tie in that folk element without it being cheesy.
