I'm a big VH fan and I think some of his criticisms are warranted. VHI was a masterful album, VHII was good, after that each album had too much scattered filler until 1984. From Women and Children First to Diver Down you can tell they had the mindset "we can just do whatever we want and people will buy it."
I keep hearing that the first album is good but ever since I saw the video to “Jump” when I was a kid I have considered them as the height of naffness.

Part Fears 2 is a masterpiece of the early 80s, it's the record I always look to as one of the last great individual uniques songs before the 80s gave us the first signs we were drifting into a corporate ice age and live aid confirmed it and now with this Taylor Swift, Sheeran and the like it feels like that compact perma-ice that even the reemergence of the sun into the musical hemisphere would have trouble melting. Mind you Party Fears 2 is that record you'd be careful not to play in the vicinity of most modern people because you just know it would get right under their skin but there remains a raw beauty to it that retains something mysterious that still seemed possible to a young man in 1982. And Martha Ladly on keyboards on Top of the Pops, what more can I say. Taylor Swift indeed!!
@@mcwulf25 That's one of the things I liked about it. It seemed deliberately designed to alienate mainstream listeners, perfectly combining a melodic pop sensibility with a punk ethos while confusing the hell out of everyone.
Right off the bat my favourite band at 10 bemused me a bit, but as much as I hate to admit it I can see where you’re coming from. Even I’ve thought their last two albums have been pretty dire, but I’ll defend almost anything they’ve done before that point. Always respect the no bullshit approach.
The Associates! No no no they are unique and inventive and Mckenzies voice its powerful moving and a the delivery can be as emotional as many a voice.Nothing quite like them in a good way.
Yes! I love them, I’m personally quite drawn to the drama and agony of his voice, I think he conveys a pretty unique mania and desperation. And musically as well, they touch on something immensely paranoid. Kitchen Person has to be one of the most intense and frightening songs I’ve ever heard.
Every time you do this, Barry, I must set the record straight. All right, here we go: 1. Muse: I remember hearing them for the first time in the late 90s and getting very excited. A good band for once! Well, it didn't last. They got boring. Fast. 2. Van Halen: I'm not a huge fan, either. "Panama" and "Unchained" are my favourite songs as well, but it's really just dumb songs with squealing guitar. 3. The Cranberries: How DARE you!! This band is Irish royalty and they never released a bad song. Your wife is right to be a huge fan. 4. Happy Mondays: I don't care for their party lifestyle (such as it was) but their music is NICE. They succeeded in spite of themselves. 5. Mötley Crüe: Yup, I agree. One of the worst bands to ever come out of Yank-land. Even their name is monumentally stupid. 6. The Associates: Never listened to them. No comment. 7. Def Leppard: The worst British hard rock band of all time. If someone shows me a copy of Pyromania or Hysteria, it will be smashed to bits. 8. The Offspring: They shouldn't be good, but they were. Catchy, dumb songs delivered with humor and wit and sung in an inimitable voice. 9. Foo Fighters: Yeah, I don't like them. But I once met Taylor Hawkins and he was a delight to talk to. 10. Eagles: Again, how DARE you! They never made a bad song or album. Their musicianship was first class and their performances legendary. Apologize!
I have odd feelings about VH....................while I think Eddie was the greatest guitarist of all time, I still never really cared for them overall! (Especially the Van Hagar era---I despise Sammy the Douche with a passion).
@@davidl570 I respect Eddie for revolutionizing the guitar, but I can't listen to more than a couple of Van Halen songs before I get bored. It's not bad. but it's all the same. Guitar squeals and macho singing. Zzzzzzz...

I don't agree with all of your criticisms here, but because you explain them I understand them. And actually I feel the same way exactly, for exactly the same reasons, about some of them. Here are ten bands I hate : 10. Pearl Jam 9. King Diamond 8. Pulp 7. Muse 6. U2 5. Wasp 4. Guns N' Roses 3. the Flaming Lips 2. Mötley Crüe 1. Limp Bizkit
in my high school in Poland in 90's Limp Bizkit and Green Day were most hated band. People loved AC/DC, Motorhead, Metallica, Megadeth and Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and all that grunge rock.
Limp Bizkit were DESIGNED to be hated by the elitist crowd, that was their whole point. Even the name was designed to draw mockery. Personally I think they're loud stupid and obnoxious- and I kinda like it.
If you were an American in the mid to late 70’s I think it would sway your view of The Eagles. That California desert vibe was so fu**ing cool and laid back and they encapsulated it perfectly!!
Yes, they did encapsulate the California desert vibe perfectly. As a teenager in the 70s, they were good for one listen but then I just moved on, so I am in agreement with our host here. Just couldn't connect with the Eagles, even though their songs are brilliant.
Definitely ok to say "you had to be there" with The Eagles. That "desert vibe" was real for a time (see 'America' w/ "Ventura Highway" and "Horse With No Name." The disproportionate sales volume versus the "contribution to music, as a whole" works against them, as does the notorious personalities of band members, most notably "Nikon Don" Henley. "Hotel California" is George Washington on the "Mount Rushmore of Most Overplayed Songs in Radio History."
Wow, quite an eclectic mix, but then as I've said before, your wide and knowledgeable grasp of historical music has always impressed me. I on the other hand, have been moved through the years by musicians who at a particular moment, reflected my life, at a critical life change. Bullet points if you will. My lists therefore, will always be shorter, my range less broad. Nonetheless, the fathom of those moments are just as important and central to my life. Just thought I'd pop that in 😁☯️🌱
Great video as usual. I am a geek and scholar on all types of rock music. Especially 60's-80's. But, the Associates?? Never even heard of them And I am aware of hundreds of obscure bands..
Imagine Dragons, Creed, Disturbed, Metallica (yea I said it), Damn - there are way too many INCLUDING Foo Fighters, U2, Coldplay, Phish, 'maybe' Green Day,
Oh my God. 💯 on The Cranberries. I really did enjoy the first album. Especially at the time it came out. It was quite refreshing when compared to everything else at the time. But by the second album I was done. That constant shrieking on Zombie had me ready to blow my brains out. And for some reason every cover band on the planet has that song in their repertoire. A sure fire way to get me to leave the joint. 😂
Agree, I thought Linger was good. In fact I heard it the other day and I enjoyed it, but Zombie always irritated me. But apparently we are not appreciating the ancient Celtic tradition in her vocals.
Thank you for a funny and intelligent presentation as usual. I don't believe that one can truly hate a band after having purchased an album, or albums, as a grown man or woman (teen purchases are exempt).
I don't listen to any of these bands either. I can appreciate how good EVH was technically on guitar, but I dislike listening to their music. Like Motley Crue, it always felt, well, shallow and without a soul to me.
@@matthewwoelfle5533I also like what Denis Leary said on a promo he did on MTV in the early 90s (which seem like an eternity ago), "I got three words for Don Henley, Joe F'n Walsh!"
I’ve never heard so many ways of putting down music that doesn’t appeal! Absolutely classic assessments Barry, I haven’t laughed out loud so much in ages!
Once I heard Gram Parsons, The Burritos etc I never had to listen to the Eagles again. Their two best songs for me are Bitter Creek and My Man (about Gram) and pretty much all Bernie both songs!
Haha to the Muse hatred! But after listening to them repeatedly on my local Rock Radio channel (it's on all the time, and I never got around to tell my DAB radio to lock down other channels...), I finally realized why I both hated and loved them! Originally they sounded great, but then I started feeling that the singer was actually singing both on the out-breath AND the in-breath, which was why the singing/lyrics sounded so weird/irritating. And yet, there are so many places where he doesn't sound that way, and the music itself is otherwise so very good for an old prog/heavy/hard rocker like me.
Another great video, as a fellow disc 4 Dad, your observations align eerily consistently with my own; it is obvious you are a chap that knows his stuff and I thoroughly enjoy your presenting style and the eloquence of your descriptors.... However as capital a fellow as you are, I found myself reeling (saving private Ryan style) at your scathing condemnation of The Cranberries with particular reference to the nails on chalk board accusation around Delores voice!... Happily there is enough good stuff in the bank laid down by your back catalogue of excellent views and insights to get passed this otherwise uncomfortable blip... I haven't worked my way through all your work so forgive me if you have already commented about my favourite Marillion album Clutching at Straws... would love to hear your thoughts on that one... Personally I love the sentiments behind Fish's (apologies for any errant apostrophefying) Swan song with the band. I guess it’s only you and I who despise VH. DLR jumping around like Pennywise and vocals like a carnival barker, Eddie writing the ridiculous track Jump, got to love that video with Eddie’s Alfred E. Newman smile.
I love Muse. Saw them live twice. Awesome. But I find it sort of fashionable for critics to dislike them. As for "yodeling shtick" of Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries) - it's actually strongly rooted in Irish tradition. This kind of singing is basically a Celtic funeral lament called keening. Motley Crue though... they're shite.
You're certainly scraping the bottom of the bottom of your barrel with this one! Much as I usually love all things conservative, Barry, you're getting a little too old and cranky here. Something I do, every three months or so, is get my kids to make me a playlist up of the stuff they are listening to get me some perspective on new music - to broaden the old perspective. You should try it. Clears the musical sinuses.
Let me highly recommend the band Versailles and their song Philia...this song has both immensely complex melodies as well a a massive number or complex chord.... while not prog whichh you like people who love prog tend to also like this band.... they are Melodic Symphonic Power Metal. And the singer has wm amazing voice.... they are a Japanese Band whose costumes are inspired by French Rococo fashion.
It's tempting to make a list of bands/performers I don’t like as much as the consensus. Like Springsteen, Lynyrd Skynnrd and Van Morrison. There was a noughties band I detested called Scouting for Girls too.
Matt belamy from muse sounds like mr burns, there's no difference whatsoever.. it's uncanny . He also takes a short breath between every vocal line. So he sounds like mr burns constantly catching his breath
Taking in account your original comment at the start of this series of videos that these aren't bands you hate - but actually mean you heavily dislike - and I agree with you, I base my rules on what bands I actually play now. Like you I have bought albums by by the majority of these.... And hardly ever listen to them now. At the time they were keenly promoted by my friends - but to listen to now? The closest is The Foo Fighters -and that is only the first album....

I was never into "prog" ("Close to the Edge" was about as far as I ever went) or much that came out of the UK after punk and "new wave" in the 1980s. So, I can't share the hate -- if only because I'm not even sure I've ever heard the music. I love the line from a previous commenter: "One man's Meatloaf is another man's Poison." From Women and Children First to Diver Down you can tell they had the mindset "we can just do whatever we want and people will buy it."
if he had good sensory equipment, it would soon be ruined by listening to Van Halen.
...maybe that's what happened!
I keep hearing that the first album is good but ever since I saw the video to “Jump” when I was a kid I have considered them as the height of naffness.
Cranberries....Associates....Def Leppard...on THIS list....unbelievable...Mr Classic Review i will still subscribe but had to register my incredulity❤
Love the entire Cranberries discography, but to be fair, Def Leppard has some truly CRAPPY albums post-Hysteria!
Agree
The Offspring are still one of my favorite bands (I'm fully aware it's more kind of a guilty pleasure) and regardless of context, I wasn't expecting them to ever even be mentioned on your channel ;-) keep up the great work!
Thanks for adding "knotty turd "to my armoury.

@@SheilaThompson-od5tr Glug!.
Thanks for writing this.
I heard "naughty turd" and thought "Well there's a new Britishism."😂
The worst band I have ever heard are the Foo fighters, what a load of rubbish...just a load of mush. Probably one of the most over-rated bands in history
Associates make the Smiths look like King crimson. Does this make sense? No. Oh well.
It makes sense to me. 💪🏼
I love Billy Mackenzie's voice but as ever, even when I disagree with you I'm still entertained by your takes. Keep up the good work 👍
I do agree with all your choices with the exception of The Associates. However I do understand your aversion to Billy's voice.
I certainly wouldn’t own cds of those I don’t really care for.
Yeah, me too, but if you want to be a credible critic, then you have to put up the money.

@@grantross2609 Don't know bout peer pressure,it becomes a warehouse and the least you can do is end up storeing what you don't like.Dont Buy what you don't like.
I used to put in on the jukebox at my local - everyone hated it! Philistines
Clearly this song divides opinion. I hated it but most people I know liked it.
No no no they are unique and inventive and Mckenzies voice its powerful moving and a the delivery can be as emotional as many a voice.Nothing quite like them in a good way.
also, on a more shallow note, it was impossible not to crush on Martha Ladly 😍
@@donello430 I didn't think I would be the only one.
All right, here we go:
Zzzzzzz...

Difficult one Muse, they were certainly a breath of fresh air when they started and are bloody good live.

Hah - the Eagles - indeed. They really, really lost me when, sometime in the 2000s, they signed an exclusive marketing deal with Walmart. The very ultimate in sell-out. Gag.

The Associates were ace, behave yerself.
It's all about opinions they say. I don't think it's necessarily negative to give honest opinions about the acts you don't love, if (as you do) you explain your reasons. I don't agree with all of your criticisms here, but because you explain them I understand them. And actually I feel the same way exactly, for exactly the same reasons, about some of them. Keep going mate, some lovely one-liners in there again 🙂
Here are ten bands I hate :
10. Pearl Jam
9. King Diamond
8. Pulp
7. Muse
6. U2
5. Wasp
4. Guns N' Roses
3. the Flaming Lips
2. Mötley Crüe
1. Limp Bizkit
I agree with eight of those. I have a little time for Motley Crue and Pulp had a certain charm.
W.A.S.P. and King Diamond don't belong on that list, but I'm with you on the others.
in my high school in Poland in 90's Limp Bizkit and Green Day were most hated band.
Flaming lips are a good band the rest are poor.
I don't agree on your views on the Associates but I do watch a lot of your videos and will continue to do so. That's life, tastes varies.
No,
Used to like them. Other than a few Glenn(RIP)Frey songs, no more
I survived the 70's Desert Vibe Massacre. 🤪
Definitely ok to say "you had to be there" with The Eagles. That "desert vibe" was real for a time (see 'America' w/ "Ventura Highway" and "Horse With No Name."
The disproportionate sales volume versus the "contribution to music, as a whole" works against them, as does the notorious personalities of band members, most notably "Nikon Don" Henley.
"Hotel California" is George Washington on the "Mount Rushmore of Most Overplayed Songs in Radio History."
I agree on all counts. You summarized each point you make with great historical perspective. Thanks for not being a drone.
"Number ten is Muse." I stood to applaud. That is a fantastic start.
Apologies if you've already answered this as I'm quite new to your channel but what do you think of Opeth? Or Porcupine Tree?
10/10 for me there, Barry. But why hold on to those crap cd’s from bands who don’t grab you any more: the charity shop bin awaits your visit.
Just thought I'd pop that in 😁☯️🌱
Absolutely agree with everything you said about the Eagles - my exact opinion.
Great video as usual.
I am a geek and scholar on all types of rock music.
Especially 60's-80's.
But, the Associates??
Never even heard of them
And I am aware of hundreds of obscure bands..

Dolores was half Canadian goose
Thank you for a funny and intelligent presentation as usual. I don't believe that one can truly hate a band after having purchased an album, or albums, as a grown man or woman (teen purchases are exempt).
I don't listen to any of these bands either. I can appreciate how good EVH was technically on guitar, but I dislike listening to their music. Like Motley Crue, it always felt, well, shallow and without a soul to me.
I am with you on The Cranberries. Change the station every time they come on the radio
Mojo Nixon summed up the Eagles perfectly for me in his song "Don Henley must die" . I cannot stand them.
The late, great Mojo Nixon!
@@chuckm4540 Elvis is Everywhere! 😃
I think Jeff Lebowski had the best take on The Eagles.
@@matthewwoelfle5533I also like what Denis Leary said on a promo he did on MTV in the early 90s (which seem like an eternity ago), "I got three words for Don Henley, Joe F'n Walsh!"
There's a legend (donno if it's true) that Mojo and Don once shared a stage later in Mojo's life. And that they had a grand old time.
VAN HALEN RULE YA SILLY NUT!
Can’t agree with all of your analysis/opinions, but I really enjoy your channel. Some of your witticisms are truly hilarious!
Eagles “Betrayal of the 60s ethos “ - as in “Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac “
The 60’s ethos were invented by a government office. Read “weird scenes in the canyon” and it will all make sense
Also have you ever covered Fish's solo career I'd love to hear that :) Thanks for all your work, genuinely enjoy your narration and impressive knowledge of your subject matter! Jim.

Agree with all but The Associates and Happy Mondays. Each to their own, eh?
Pretty much. If everyone was down with the same sound it would be as boring as hell by now
Excellent video Barry! Although isn't life and space too short to hang onto multiple albums by bands you hate?
I can't agree with you on the Cranberries but no disagreement on any of the others.
Great band. All the '90s albums are good, not just the first one. She was one of the best and most original singer -songwriter ever.

You make me feel fortunate that I have never heard of the band Muse, as best as I can recall. I was never into "prog" ("Close to the Edge" was about as far as I ever went) or much that came out of the UK after punk and "new wave" in the 1980s. So, I can't share the hate -- if only because I'm not even sure I've ever heard the music. I love the line from a previous commenter: "One man's Meatloaf is another man's Poison."
