One morning, my air conditioner was making weird grinding and clanking noises, waking up my wife, and she asked me to turn down my music I had been listening to a lot of Einstürzende Neubauten at the time 😅
Stuff like this happens to me XD It happened way too often that I was just sitting down to hold a conversation or whatever and out of nowhere "wait are my headphones still on?" No. It was random noise from outside XD
One of my fave memories was at a festival where me and my friends thought a generator next to the camp site were drums on the main stage. It legit sounded like a double bass pedal, heavy AF.
Gatekeeping isn't 100% bad. Gatekeeping maintains standards, and this is important. Standards prevent the scene from being diluted. Being an elitist prick, however, and purposely excluding new people from the scene who are curious, but clueless, is bad.
Not to mention those standards that people have, they themselves don't consistently maintain because I garuntee there are songs and bands they like but won't admit to themselves and others and human beings are naturally inconsistent creatures because of our stream of consciousness. Let people like and make music they like, diversity is incredibly healthy and the natural state of the world. Expand your horizons.
Based. If someone's interested and just scratched the surface, and think they've reached the apotheosis of black metal with Nymphetamine, I'll gently nudge them in the right direction. I won't throw them straight into Jew Atomizer but I'll recommend a sample box of bands to get a feel for their preferences.
@DarthMizinthI like some of the rawest shit out there. And I don’t see what’s wrong with having cradle as a fav. Myself and many many others tend to like albums more than bands. Cradle has amazing albums. Did they get corny and a bit commercial? Absolutely. Are the first 2 records and the ep in between some of the greatest albums ever? Absolutely.
My opinions...As I am older I dont care anymore if it is true or kvult or postblackmetal or whatever , if I like the song it is good in my book. Also Blackmetal is so alike to the romanticism artistic movement in many aspects. I often wonder why no one ever talks about that.
I used to be super anal about subgenre classifications, now I don't really care as long as I like the music and I've come across so many bands where they are subgenre fluid and have multiple influences even in one single song so it is hard to classify. I'm basically like, "Yeah, I think this is mostly post-metal, but they got other stuff so fuck it, the music rips."
Yeah I have the exact same feeling about this. When I was younger I had more "purist" thoughts about what the music should sound and be for me to like it. Now that I'm over twice the age than back then, 20 years ago, I take everything in as it is. For me it's more of the "feel" what the song and/or band brings in.
NOOO my favourite band is a blend of blackened death thrash and speed metal with norwegian folk music and industrial influences and I must refer to them as such every single time I speak about them completely umprompted
Here in the U.S. a lot of people call Ghost metal. I have even heard people say Nickleback is metal here- it's a very odd place with people who hold odd opinions.
I wish I were joking, there are a lot of people that feel like when they hear a distorted guitar that it automatically makes the music metal or something I swear. Discussing metal with people who enjoy metal music can be fun, but discussing metal music with the average "I like every genre of music" person that typically only listens to top radio hits can be tedious / amusing at times. @@WFly101
Yeah, I call Ghost Pop Metal. They are in the metal genre, they write great, catchy music, but they are not a Metal band. They are a Pop Metal band. I do love Ghost too.
Well i must say that a burzum Tshirt is actualy shocking from the most bands that are out there at least.. i had this new coworker at work that had a 2 months contract. and he was always silent, never spoke to anyone. and then he showed up at work wearing a burzum shirt. none of my colleagues think anything about it or even know what "burzum" is. but to me it felt like the pieces of the puzzle fall together why he is the way he is. as if i got more answers. so i called him out on his tshirt and he said that he really is into black metal. he liked bands like silencer, mayhem, darkthrone and more classics. and we had a long pleasant conversation about that. since i also like black metal. later on my boss came to me and he said that he heard from people that this new guy barely talks to anyone and seems to be very introvert and silent. and that people can't get more than 2 sentences out of him, and that they feel a bit uneasy around him. my boss said that he has been observing him from a distance and that he was surprised to see him having a quite long conversation with me. So my boss asked me what we where talking about XD
@@jayceegee258 well not on most people. But on him, yes. He kinda had a this mysterious vibe you know. Like some kind of extremist being into burning churches kinda vibe. And him being so silent has kinda shown that he really might be a different person on the inside. Until i spoke to him about black metal.
I always used to see black metal as an art form beyond what we call the "metal scene" even tho it is metal, its been explored in so many ways sonically and in atmosphere that it stands as a genre on its own far from the norm and thats exactly what made me fall in love with the music
Unless they are people who are not real metal and only play dress up. Real heavy metal people don’t play dress up only in concerts or for their mom, they are real people, always metal 24/7. And it is completely natural for who is real
@@ThreadBomb No, I am talking EXACTLY about music. Learn the history of metal before speaking if you didn’t live it first hand. And there is no difference between the two, there cannot be one without the other, and don’t call them clothes, it is image, distinctive from the Masses. But nobody ever thought about it in reality, it was just completely natural. Metal is not only music as is not only image or philosophy. If you separate the pack, any of the pieces, it is simply NOT metal anymore. Weather the music, the image or the spirit. They are one. Only outsiders who DON’T want to sacrifice to Metal cannot understand this. It’s like the difference between bikers and civilians, just without Any club or written rule… and THIS is the Magic of Metal, what makes it special. It must be spontaneous to be real. Fake can be spotted immediately or neophytes (which are very welcome at any age if authentic). There are no written rules, but if you go too much astray it becomes simply something else. Black Metal comes from the Heavy Metal scene. Black Metal IS HEAVY METAL. Go look where Black Metal comes from. I want to share something with the younger ones here, because maybe you were not even born, in the 80’s, Before came up all these fancy names to define metal (if you are metal fans you know how many there are) there were many bands that were like Black Metal in the music and atmosphere. Just nobody called it Black Metal because the term didn’t exist yet. The more commercial the more fake, but in the underground where 1000 of bands you NEVER EVEN HEARD OF existed, there already were bands that today could have been considered Black Metal. Real Metal strives in the underground, in the local bands unknown, not in the commercial product made to sell. That is where the real metal scene is or was (not sure anymore). In the dark crapy recordings and demo cassettes and concerts of local bands in unknown abandoned places. That is Real Metal. And that is where Black Metal (only a name) came from
My hot take (idk if thats a hot ta, but it fits the topic): Black Metal is actually a lot closer to lots of electronic music (especially older ones) than many BM-heads might want to admit. (Almost) Every other metal subgenre is mostly about writing songs, while BM often times creates a musical, evolving soundscape more akin to electronic music... It's less about the message and more about the experience.
Varg has said he got inspiration from going to raves, that massive wall of strobing sound they have there, one can see where the giant, encompassing atmosphere of Hvis lyset tar oss came from. It's still purely metal but electronic was a big influence for sure.
I'm not sure this is a hot takes. Just a theory and a excellent one btw... it's an excellent theory to think about the black metal universe amd his impact on listeners.
@@-47- I was about to add the dungeon synth part, but I also think that some parts of the bm community seem to really enjoy that more extreme kind of breakbeat music and other, less dance- and more atmosspheric/ambient-focused electro genres.
90 % of Metal is considered Black Metal lol. Everything that has the guitars equalized in treble and doesn't sound happy like Iron Maiden is considered Black Metal. Period.
10:49 This is a point that deserves so much more attention imo, music made with raw production and played with little technical ability was something born out of punk rock music that BM would do very similarly in the 90s
I wish Kanonenfieber would make their sound quality a little less polished, but I really like them. The whole premise of their song writing was what initially grabbed my attention, and when I read the lyrics to Der Füsilier knowing what I now know- it guts me every time I listen to it
Honestly i love the high production quality. Especially the drums. And their lyrics are awesome too. I remember sitting on the bus on my ride home listening to Der Füsilier and having to concentrate to not shed a tear.
Ins Niemandsland is such a Banger, The line: Die Augen zu, das Herz verbrannt, so schicken Sie uns in das Niemandsland, Is so catchy and heartbreaking to me at the same time, love it
the thing with Noise is, with Kanonenfieber is that he researches all the topics he writes about and puts heavy emphasis on being historically accurate. also, if you like Kanonenfieber maybe try Noise's other Projects Non Est Deus and Leipa
Difference with 2nd wave and after is that the bm after it is more harder to play, use a bit more melodies or added more folk (medieval like) sound in their mix. Also the music is mixed better but not over the top good ofcourse. Most of the time its easier for people to get into that than with the second wave music because if it I guess.
YES! Ghost is basically a tribute band to all the 60's - 80's music that Tobias Forge listened to as a youngster. The masks and satanic imagery are just added spectacle to make it more interesting and fun. And that's what Ghost is above all, fun!
And if it gets some of these mainstream music listeners interested in actual talented musicians playing their instruments, instead of drum machines and computer crap, that's a win in my eyes.
Btw that wasn’t directed at user ju whatever ur name is man. Hope it didn’t come off that way . .. ::puts on ghost record :: Oh hey I kinda think this is what dead put on before the .. u know ..
Watain is genuinely great. In the digital era, when most people's attention spam is so reduced, I'm actually surprised to know that they have a secure fanbase. I only have one of their albums on CD, "Lawless Darkness", and it's top notch quality from start to finish.
I must say that this channel has been great as a beginner dabbeling into black metal! I come from mostly death metal and was always curious about black metal but never knew how to start since I always got the feeling a lot of people in the scene where "elitists" and didn't like a noob trying to get into the genre hahaha! But so far everyone seems cool, and the video's are great for helping me find my way into the scene! Starting to discover a lot of local Belgian bands aswel!
You also hear an „Core“ Influence on their new Song Kampf und Sturm in my opinion. Their Guitarists are really big into Deathcore. And it sounds fckn great, even if it’s not that Blackened anymore
10:25 I understand and in some ways agree with your point, but honestly I love all 3 of those sounds haha. I love it when it sounds like a "broken toaster" I love it when it sounds raw but just right. I also love it when it sounds modern and clean. I just love the sound of the genre no matter the audio quality or why it was made. But I also agree that it's best when it sounds and is made for reasons you stated.
It all depends on the band and what I want to get out of it at a certain moment. I enjoy Burzum on some misty mornings and the qualitiy has to be exactly like it is...and sometimes clean sound is what I'm looking for, so...
well. farvann loves to pretend to be alpha and omega about bm. there is a reason those kind of albums have many fans. ppl like that kind of sound design and quality. idk , maybe it soothes them
Haven't been watching long but I really appreciate and agree with your perspectives on black metal, especially when you talk about the soul and aesthetics of it. It's my favorite genre and we share many of the same sentiments.
I have worked in the music industry for 6 years now. My personal taste is UK Acid Techno. But the more time I spend working across all different genres and scenes the more I appreciate that people are just making music and expressing themselves. It's so easy for us to be snobs tell our selves that our scenes are superior but its all just taste.
Not a massive black metal fan but Mayhem is in my top five list of best bands I’ve seen live. I’ve traveled 8 years to Atlanta two years in a row just to see them. Totally worth it.
That's strange, I quite like Kanonenfieber, the whole WW1 aesthetic and historical thing they have going on is quite cool to me, I also quite enjoy the music obviously.
maybe because the guy behind Kanonenfieber is a bit scetchy. Buying klicks on yt or treating employees bad, I don't know if its actually all true.@@OminousIllustrations
the norwegian scene has been really inclusive and non gate keeping for several years now. Most gatekeepers dont even realize that their inspiration bands are really chill lmao
You can even make a case and look beyond the norwegian scene and BM in general - I don't want to pose another hot take here, but generally: Oftentimes musicians are way less gatekeepers or elitist than their fans. Nowadays Metal musicians often listen to all kinds of music to draw inspiration from, and even in the 80s and 90s various forms of electronic music influenced BM hence dungeon synth etc. Some BM musicians stated they don't listen to BM or even Metal but New Wave, Synth Pop or Folk music when they want to compose BM songs - if they even listen to anything at all.
Yeah lol on the fenriz commentary tracks he usually step by step explains the formula, the gear and which bands he listened to for inspiration on each riff
@@vampmode9132 Fenriz has always been into old heavy metal, speed metal , punk and crust (as well as electronic music). Even when Darkthrone went 'black metal, it was more of a return to old school music like Autopsy, Celtic Frost etc. . They have never made a secret that they just played music they liked, rather than making an edgy and new music genre i.e. black metal.
Pretty unpopular opinion, but purism is stagnating black metal, killing all the creativity from it and causing all "true black metal" to directly copy the few great names of the second wave BM with absolutely nothing to give to the genre, every album sounding exactly like the 10 greatest black metal bands. it's fundamentally destructive ideology to the point of religiousness, condemning artists for using their own brain and inspiration when writing their music, forbidding evolution for not sounding exactly like something that has already been repeated over and over. exactly same path that already killed thrash metal. gladly not all the new wave black metal bands follow this ideology.
3:33 I think it wasn't about corpse paint, but about bands that wear those masks with eye slits, like actual bank robbers. Maybe even Mgla style, without any eye slits.
Recently I heard the newest Hexvessel album and I found a playlist from one of the members with some musics that inspired him to go more in Black Metal way in this album (the other one that I knew are very much folk than the new one). Anyway, talking about this playlist he said that Black Metal is, for him, not JUST a genre but a way to live. I don't know exactly why but I totally agree with this. I love other kinds of metal gothic, power metal but anyone of this are so immersing in my opinion. So about the appearance, I really love and use it on my days (I'm a scientist and work on 2 labs), not so strong as an artist on stage, of course. I feel not just empowered, as you said, but I feel expressed; identified and that is really important to me.
as someone whos been making varieties of BM for a while now I can confirm that like many genres, the passion and emotion comes before all else. its translated into the paint, the shrieks and dissonant chord progressions.
I agreed with pretty much everything you said. I just subscribed because you really helped me answer a question about how I produce my music at 10:20. I also love Carach Angren. I first discovered them from watching a black metal horror movie called "Pyewacket" which was pretty creepy to be honest. Ever heard of Pestlegion? Awesome BM band. I recommend hearing "The Witchhammer" from their album "Dominus Profundis"
I agree with your take on ghost, however they do have a few metal sounding songs, like Majesty, cirice and absolution. But yes they're definitely a rock band and i think it's silly when people try to argue that they're not metal, because i mean... Ghost has never claimed to be metal xD
They actually have claimed to be metal in early interviews around the time of their second album. They actually said "If you went by 80s rules, then we would be Black Metal". I watched the interview, trying to sift through 11 years of interviews since then to find it is damn near impossible. But Ghost's first album was 100% metal. Tobias complained that they were on tour when the second album was mixed and they took all the "bite" out of the guitars, he said they were going to fix that on the third album. If you ever watch them play those songs live at Rock In Rio 2013 they sound a lot heavier. Ghost were 100% a metal band then...now though, it's harder to defend their new material.
@@Gregbaltzer I wouldn't consider either Ghost or Sleep Token to be metal but I am a lot more comfortable calling Ghost a band that can actually write fun and interesting songs in their genre lol
The great feeling of discovering underground music died with the internet, remember the overcopied albumcovers, and re-re-recordings that sounds that have been done in the basement....of hell, i miss that, so i just listen to the golden classics of the 1990's and early 2000's
Just listen to what you like, what you love and if you want show it to your friends or the world. As long as the music sounds good for you, everything is fine. I listen to bands like Antrisch, Thulcandra, Saor, Harkla, Agrypnie, Orbit Culture, Vredehammer, Allegaeon, Shadow of Intent, Blind Guardian, Sabaton, Kanonenfieber, Batushka, Gojira bla bla bla bla. I don't care about their marketing or over-marketing. If they have good songs why should I complain about their marketing or wanting to get bigger with each release? If I don't like their new style, I just stick to the old ones and enjoy them. Why complain about a band that tries out something new? It is their project, so they should decide what they should play. I understand people that complain about bands not sticking to their old sound and stuff, but there is no need to literally tell everyone over and over again that the new sound sucks. Just stick to older ones and let others enjoy the new modern sound
It's funny to think how black metal (second wave) started out as anti-fashion in response to how people were dressing in metal and went back to dressing as early 80s bands, then it became trend, and kind of uniform.
FinistriArt guy here (the first opinion). Thanks Farvann. You completely got what I mean and didn't take it out of context. Obviously I embrace newbies who understand the culture and are worthy. Its about keeping the trash out. And honestly this is my opinion on any other hobby/community. If there are no standards and integrity left it all goes eventually to shit.
Question, do you have any understanding for those who would love to get into the culture of Black Metal, but who may have an averse reaction towards the imagery and content depicted in it, especially if they may appear to be a different race, sex, gender, etc. than the ones most dominant in the (sub)genre? I assume you do and may feel my question to be ridiculous, but I would love to gain more clarification/insight to your perspective on this.
The “emos wearing Emperor hoodies” thing reminds me of the time I met this goth girl with a Midnight shirt. Me being the idiot I am, I tried to start a conversation and she didn’t even know it was a band and just got it at Hot Topic. 👿
Don't know about their albums, but Obituary is one of the best live bands I have seen. Take a 70 bands festival, out of the 35 bands you'll actually going to see, Obituary will be number 1 (or close to it). Possibly tied with Immolation. Given they play at that festival and you manage to see them. Maybe I should rectify my situation with their albums.
Damn, nobody is as good at complaining about everything than metal heads lmao xD Why would you care, if other people are posers or not? They are gonna exist anyway, if you hate them or not. So I'll just have my fun with black metal, not my problem if others are "posers".
I actually gotta say good produced BM brought me into Black Metal in general. A friend sent me a live performance in april of Kanonenfieber and I kinda liked it and one day I listened to their "Der Füsilier 1" and I loved it But that still didnt bring me into that typical 2nd wave kinda shitty sound That took something very depressing happening to me but atleast it brought me into that Genre so ig it also has good sides
I agree about *OBITUARY* 💀..... they have a few songs but I never got heavily into them and first heard them in 1996. In fact, I first listened to Morbid angel in 1995, loved them. Heard deicide in 1995 and hated them but took a second deeper listen in 1999 and realized how wrong i was
I have every Obituary release, but I've been listening to them since 1990. There are a couple albums that I skip over though eg. Darkest Day, Xecutioner's Return.
13:16 Personally I'd differentiate bands like Mayhem, Burzum or Watain form bands like Mgła, 1914, Manbryne. I'd call former 2nd wave BM and latter modern BM, main difference being modern BM tad bit easier on the ears.
Why shouldn't fans wear corpse paint? Often they have bands themselves and if someone can feel the music better in it when he is listening, then go for it.
My hot take as a person that’s not a metalhead is that black metal is basically just metal but for theatre kids lol. Also thank you for your content! I’m just starting to explore the scene to broaden my taste in different genres and this channel has been helping me alot on my journey so far ☺️✌🏻🖤✨
I would say that the 2nd wave died around 1995-96, when the infamous Norwegian bands (and others) were no longer underground. Or nearly died, at least. What came after that was a ton of bands that were inspired by the 2nd wave, but incorporated or mixed with other styles to create their own sound. I call this the third wave because there was a clear shift in the mid-nineties. But there are still bands today that make black metal of the same style and creed as the second wave. So I think it is fair to say that the underground "pure" stuff hasn't died out completely.
Enjoying NSBM is enjoying NSBM regardless of your reasoning. “The riffs are good though” is and always will be a weak ass argument. If you constantly have to rationalize why you like something you’re not being honest with yourself.
I mean to me its pretty simple. Me like sound, sound make brain feel good. Me no like artist, artist make brain feel anger. Me not financially support artist when listen to sound that make brain happy. It goes both ways, I can like the artist but not enjoy the music, and vice versa. Bittorrent exists for a reason.
For me, Second Wave Black Metal died when Dimmu Borgir released their album Spiritual Black Dimensions. So, Second Wave Black Metal started in 1987 and died in 1998. 1997 was a really good year for Second Wave Black Metal.
I don't think it died, but it certainly started to change. 1998 was quite a transient year for Black Metal releases. I found that the releases coming out in 1998 were simply not as good as the same band's previous releases, so for me 1998 marked a noticeable decline in quality. Some examples: Covenant released Nexus Polaris, which was nowhere near as good as In Times Before the Light, Marduk's Nightwing was good, but not as good as Heaven Shall Burn, Gorgoroth's Destroyer... was nothing close to Under the Sign of Hell, Abigor's Supreme Immortal Art just wasn't as good as the superb Opus IV, and so on. There were some strong releases, of course: Setherial's Lords of the Nightrealm, Odium's astonishing The Sad Realm of the Stars and Enslaved's Blodhemn all came out in 1998 and were, in my opinion, stand out releases for that year.
@@UnixAnt I like Nexus Polaris and In Times Before The Light, but yeah, I prefer In Times Before The Light. Animatronic was a bad album for me. I stopped to listen to them when they released Animatronic.
1994 was the second wave's peak and some argue, its final year before its death. I think there was still much life in 95 and 96 but by 97 there were a lot of diminishing returns.
@@goatmoonwarmaster4641 I bought it when it released in 1999. I offered it to Varg Vikernes when he got his RUclips channel, he gently declined it. I finally gave it away to someone 2years ago because that album sucks (finally someone wanted it).
The production quality is not giving the sense of mainstream and in far most cases not even losing the rebellious attitude. Latter is one of the original elements rooting the tree of ideas that form black metal. The recording quality has actually nothing to do with the music itself. Maybe with its form of release, because in the 90s, when many bands explored into the genre, they simply had no other tools and utilities to make use of than cheap microphones and lacking sound engineers. These days it is very cheap and available to records crystal clear audio. You should know yourself as you also do that. The rebellious attitude was only put into the soundscape of recording through a potato. Nowadays you are able to make the rebellion a bit more obvious by actually recording decipherable music where you do not have to guess the chords or instrumentation.
Here's my hot take: Goats are a terrible symbol of Satanism. I work at a petting zoo and I can assure you, they are just goofy eyed blobs on stilts. They are adorable little idiots, fluffy dumbasses. I love them very much, but evil they are not. If any animal embodies untamability, it's the nocturnal predator known as the common house cat. (which I love too) Think about it.
Idk I’ve worked on farms and goats can be pretty territorial sometimes and won’t back down. Definitely not an animal that emanates demon energy though. They’re way too stupid to be evil lmao.
even if Ghost isn't Metal it is a great Starting Point for those who want to dive into Metal. I have several Friends who asked me which Band they should start to dive in the Metal Genre. I Allways say "Start with Ghost" The look, the feeling, the Lyrics its all Metal but the Music isn't. After that they can get into Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slipknot etc etc. Ghost is awsome. I Love Ghost. Saw them 2 times live. Ghost. Listen to Ghost. NOW!
@@sinthoras1917 i can objectively state that Ghost is not bad. In fact, they are extremely good at what they do. Whether you like it or not is a different discussion altogether.
Out of all metal communities I have tried getting into, out of melodeath, deathcore, even metalcore, sympho, normal death metal), black metal has been the least welcoming for me and it is especially because of the production/quality point. More often than not, I get told I simply will never enjoy BM because of me not being much of a fan of cave-recorded productions and such "raw sound". That just ties with the gatekeeping point. You simply arent welcome in BM communities for listening to polished BM more than the potato BM, so I simply opted about keeping my love for the genre to myself and well, sadly, never share it online with anyone who considers themselves to be inside the community, because like I said, and maybe it is just my awful luck, more often than not, the person wants to argue and debate with me on my own taste and why I should stop listening to polished BM. I get it, you guys wanna keep the rawness, something that is in the core of the genre, and you guys are fine with actually gatekeeping it, and no I dont mean everybody, but a lot of people I have met both online and irl share this sentiment, like we are going to infect the genre and slowly kill it by spraying detergent on it or whatever. Thats fine I guess, we all have tastes and not all of us have to be part of the community.
The first Ghost album is 100% metal, more on the Doom Metal side. The second album has a lot of 70s occult rock feel to it, the third album has a lot more metal back in it, that opening riff in Cirice could have been written by Jeff Hanneman. After that It's really hard to defend Ghost as a metal band, but there are sprinkles of metal throughout all the albums. There's still more metal in Ghost then Sleep Token. And there was an interview, around the era of the second album, when Ghost said "If you went by the 80s rules, then were Black metal." referring to the fact that 80s black metal wasn't based around an established sound. And when ever Ghost wins an award, or is featured in a metal mag, they never step up and say "We'd love to accept this award, or be interviewed by your magazine, but we're not a metal band so we have to decline." But they accept accept those Grammy awards for best metal performance, so even without saying so they are admitting to be a metal band. But I've seen people argue on social media that Judas Priest, Wasp, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Motorhead, Quiet Riot aren't metal. Which is ridiculous. A lot of People argue that Metallica's Black album isn't metal, of that none of the albums Metallica has done since is metal, which is ridiculous. I started listening to metal in 1982, and with the exception of Punk music, and some classical, it's still the only music I listen to. I think Ghost fits easily next to classic metal bands of the 70s and 80s like Witchfinder General, Satan, Angel Witch, Iron Maiden. Some people like to call bands like Rainbow, Alice Cooper, and Scorpions metal, some like to call them hard rock. Sometimes when you're so on the edge of both genres, like Ghost is, then it's really not worth the energy to argue about it. Just let people call them what they want.
they had decent songs since. the catchy abba type stuff is pretty good but the pop stuff is cringe. still having seen them in 2011 they were a metal band for sure. worst thing about ghost is that we wont get any more repugnant and they played a role in in solitude breaking up aswell.
@@derunsympath The song "He Is" is where Ghost started writing songs that I can skip over. I like the first three songs on Prequelle(not counting that intro song), but that's about it the rest is just back ground noise I let play while I'm doing something else. Impera was a much better album over all over, but there are still songs I don't want to hear like Darkness At the Heart of My Love, but I love songs like Watcher in the Sky. I love a good chorus and Ghost excels at writing good choruses.
@@Gregbaltzer He is i love. I think the problem with Tobias is, that he is using other people / guitarists to write for him. His songwriting is still good tho. Impera i havent bothered with yet. Meliora was decent i think.
If you look at the credits on wiki producers and song writers from the pop world have been brought in to work on the albums with him. He wrote the entire first album, then on the next 2 Martin co-wrote some stuff. The majority is still Tobias though. I'm sure a lot of these people are there to get Ghost to the next level. I don't begrudge him, Tobias paid his dues playing in a lot of bands with no success, he's in his 40s with a family now, he needs to make some money, and he finally found a band that lots of people love@@derunsympath

Hallo Farvann! Wie geht's? Here are some of my useless opinions about this fantastic genre: - Liturgy is a fantastic band. The hate they have received in the past due to their pretentiousness was unnecessary because their music is genuinely good and worthy of anybody's time (I'm curious to know your opinion about them, if you have one!). - USBM is one of the best scenes in black metal (Weakling, Xasthur, Leviathan, Panopticon, Wolves in the Throne Room... you know the names). - Gnaw Their Tongues is one of the best modern black metal projects. - You can be a Christian and enjoy kvlt stuff. It's just a matter of detaching yourself from satanic themes that more times than often are either an evil gimmick or a protest against the bad things that people have done in the name of God. As a christian I know how God has been badly strumentalised and distorted (and still is), and this should sicken me especially at first.
Hello Farvann, I’m a big fan of your channel! I found this new band several months ago and it sounds really metal. The bands called Portal and I wanted to see if you could react to it! The first song that you could listen to first would be their 7th song “13 Globes” from their 2nd album Outre’. I don’t believe you would get this comment on youtube but it’s cool!
I love NSBM. I don't understand what black metal vocalists are singing about anyway. And who the hell think killing, hatred and genocide too much for black metal? Or i'm too edgy to see why so....
@@nguyenhieu6031 I think it's fine to listen to NSBM but you should definitely understand that it is propaganda as well as music. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Don't ever delude yourself into thinking you're above manipulation
@@barlow949 and yeah, i totally understand the thing you guys all said about the lyrics. Like no shit, i don’t agree with the message of the song, but i find it entertaining because how hateful and edgy it is. Makes me laugh
I'm a black metal poser, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I think what that commenter means by modern BM versus second wave is that modern has a cleaner sound. They are still second wave, just second wave with cleaner production.
I like your music and youtube channel even if I don't agree with everything what you are saying. I think that in times, when good quality of sound is not anymore hard to access, staying to raw quality is more of musical decoration than essential thing in whole genre. And by that I don't mean that it is a bad thing, quite the opposite, it's now harder to get proper low quality sound, and it can sound just crappy when stick to the "rules", what happened to me and I know now, that when I will be releasing full album it will in regular quality. It's not nesesery to record music on grinder to make it "true", because not only black metal, but music in general is just very intimate thing, so if black metal is msuic that spoke to someone's soul, then to make their own "true" black metal, it has to came from that corrupted by black metal soul. It's fine to copy style of different band or smth, but to inspire others and make them really enjoy your music, it has to have something new. Even if that novelty isn't obvious. And adding music to tiktok is unfortunatelly very helpful, I get why people are getting upset with black metal on that platform, but the fact that it's appearing in new media is good, it means that it's not dead yet and there are still people enjoying it.
gatekeeping is important but we shouldn't overdo it. also the idea of gatekeeping is stupid when nobody knows anything about the genre. like, people aren't trying to pass through the gate lol we should def gatekeep nsbm fans.
Melodic black metal is better than the shit mayhem and burzum put out. Any of that TROOKVLT shit was terrible. Immortal had the right idea. I’d take Antestor over them.

I didn’t know anything about it and why the sound was so horrible. Today I consider Black metal home. The history of BM fascinates me and cant stop listening to it everyday.
Black Metal for me is like chesse. I wouldn't consume a kg of it per day on a regular basis. But 5 to 10 % of it on every meal/genre makes everything just better to me.

My opinions...As I am older I dont care anymore if it is true or kvult or postblackmetal or whatever , if I like the song it is good in my book. Also Blackmetal is so alike to the romanticism artistic movement in many aspects. I often wonder why no one ever talks about that.
Some do like at DMU/DLA, this concept is a central theme

My hot take (idk if thats a hot ta, but it fits the topic):
Black Metal is actually a lot closer to lots of electronic music (especially older ones) than many BM-heads might want to admit.
Not sure if it's a hot take. With the amount of dungeon synth and dark ambient that's incorporated into black metal, it's quite transparent.

When people go on about Sleep Token being metal, I am a lot more comfortable calling Ghost a metal band then Sleep Token.
@@Gregbaltzer I wouldn't consider either Ghost or Sleep Token to be metal but I am a lot more comfortable calling Ghost a band that can actually write fun and interesting songs in their genre lol

They are gonna exist anyway, if you hate them or not. So I'll just have my fun with black metal, not my problem if others are "posers".
Great video and band recomndations :D
What are the bands that are playing at around the 10:30 mark? 🙏🧎♂
I like some Carach Angren. Please don't block me Farvann, I love you.
I actually gotta say good produced BM brought me into Black Metal in general. A friend sent me a live performance in april of Kanonenfieber and I kinda liked it and one day I listened to their "Der Füsilier 1" and I loved it
But that still didnt bring me into that typical 2nd wave kinda shitty sound
That took something very depressing happening to me but atleast it brought me into that Genre so ig it also has good sides
I like this video format, but some of the people asking questions clearly just started listening to Burzum a week ago
I agree about *OBITUARY* 💀..... they have a few songs but I never got heavily into them and first heard them in 1996.
In fact, I first listened to Morbid angel in 1995, loved them. Heard deicide in 1995 and hated them but took a second deeper listen in 1999 and realized how wrong i was
Cause of Death was a good album imo, I’m a huge James Murphy fan though.
I have every Obituary release, but I've been listening to them since 1990. There are a couple albums that I skip over though eg. Darkest Day, Xecutioner's Return.
Cause of Death is an indisputable part of the death metal pantheon.
haha i like your sense of humor, hice video Farvann! Saludos desde Argentina.
13:16 Personally I'd differentiate bands like Mayhem, Burzum or Watain form bands like Mgła, 1914, Manbryne. I'd call former 2nd wave BM and latter modern BM, main difference being modern BM tad bit easier on the ears.
Venom, Celtic Frost, Bathory etc. = First wave
Darkthrone, Burzum, Emperor etc. = Second wave
That is what those people mean.
Anyone who dislikes gatekeeping in black metal should face the wall.
love ur channel i discoverd BM yesturday since i listen mostly on pop
pop? Gross. Grow up.
Why shouldn't fans wear corpse paint?
Often they have bands themselves and if someone can feel the music better in it when he is listening, then go for it.
that was so funny and entertaining, thank you!
As far as image goes, I've always been a bigger fan of the occultist robe look vs the spikey fake armor.
Darkened nocturn slaughtercult is the most underrated black metal band
Finally someone said it. That band is elusive as f..k. No interviews, no b.s, nothing. Just pure black metal.
@@morbidcorpse5954 onielar is the most badass vocalist people need to watch their live videos and wish she would spit blood on you!
True
"What do you expect people wearing suits?" Akercocke pulled it off!
Black metal and tiktok should be opposite worlds.
Just for this, if i ever play a concert, im wearing a three piece business suit.
Look up Sznur! They already do that
For me, Second Wave Black Metal died when Dimmu Borgir released their album Spiritual Black Dimensions.
Spiritual black dimensions is a great album so
@@goatmoonwarmaster4641 I bought it when it released in 1999. I offered it to Varg Vikernes when he got his RUclips channel, he gently declined it. I finally gave it away to someone 2years ago because that album sucks (finally someone wanted it).
I actually like how bands like Mgla, Kanonenfieber, and Batushka present themselves
It really adds to the mystery and atmosphere of their music
I love Fallen and Belus. Some of my favorites honestly. I agree with your opinion on the gatekeeping, Farvann.
Well.. the goat symbolism is far older than any metal music
There's a goat pen near me, can confirm this.
Idk I’ve worked on farms and goats can be pretty territorial sometimes and won’t back down. Definitely not an animal that emanates demon energy though. They’re way too stupid to be evil lmao.
wrong animal, goose is the only personification of evil and chaos in this world lmao
We BM enjoyers are gonna live under tons of stigmas, all we can do is keep enjoying BM
even if Ghost isn't Metal it is a great Starting Point for those who want to dive into Metal. NOW!
Ghost is bad.
@@sinthoras1917 Doesn't matter. Listen to Ghost. NOW!
@@sinthoras1917 i can objectively state that Ghost is not bad. In fact, they are extremely good at what they do. Whether you like it or not is a different discussion altogether.
@@rubysoffner4557 whether I like them is what determines whether they are good.
@@sinthoras1917 HAHAHAHAHA. No.
Social media ruins everything.. So why should bm be any different?
13:00 just getting into it, started following your videos around the same time I was exploring more rock sub genres
Summoning is the best black metal band of all time
Hows THAT for hot take.
Also. It is NOT dungeon synth. Which is a hot take in the DS community
That is not that hot ngl
@@sinthoras1917 depends on how trve cvlt you need your BM.
Black Metal is a lot like playing guitar itself, in the words of a teacher, "It's easy to play... badly."
You mentioned enjoying the banjo in the Taake song. You might also enjoy the American bluegrass/black metal bands Panopticon, Exulansis, and Primeval Well. 🤘
Hallo Farvann! Wie geht's?
Here are some of my useless opinions about this fantastic genre:
- Liturgy is a fantastic band.
NSBM is propaganda, not music
@@rubysoffner4557 it is music. And i enjoy it
@@nguyenhieu6031 I think it's fine to listen to NSBM but you should definitely understand that it is propaganda as well as music.
@@rubysoffner4557 depends which band were talking about. Music as a purely political vehicle fails as art.
I'm a black metal poser, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I think what that commenter means by modern BM versus second wave is that modern has a cleaner sound. They are still second wave, just second wave with cleaner production.
Listening to nsbm bands doesnt make you cool. You're already cool.
nsbm fans are all delusional stinky friendless losers who can't accept that they lost the war 80 years ago
And adding music to tiktok is unfortunatelly very helpful, I get why people are getting upset with black metal on that platform, but the fact that it's appearing in new media is good, it means that it's not dead yet and there are still people enjoying it.
gatekeeping is important but we shouldn't overdo it. also the idea of gatekeeping is stupid when nobody knows anything about the genre. like, people aren't trying to pass through the gate lol
we should def gatekeep nsbm fans.

Melodic black metal is better than the shit mayhem and burzum put out.
Any of that TROOKVLT shit was terrible. Immortal had the right idea.
I’d take Antestor over them.
😐
Why so mad though? Melodic Black Metal is awesome, Dissection for example. But still Burzum is amazing and special.
Immortal's "sons of northern darkness" had a lot of thrash influenced drumming and riffage to me.
Burzum was the best of black metal.
The Baptism riff made me smile.
Im 47. Ive been a music fan all my life. Ive heard music of almost every music genre that catch my attention even latino music called salsa. In 2019 discovered Black Metal.
Thanks for those Ghost, man 😎 Finally someone brings some insight into it.
