Finally understand how the up/down mixes with the around. The visual of going down a spiral staircase banister helps me, vs the image I have had of the inclined hula hoop (explanar). I have heard the golf swing is the arms club going up and down and blending with the body's rotation but I fail to understand or visualise it. And it seems to not explain the needed sling of the left arm off the chest. Which relates to 1 question I have always struggled with, how does the clubhead swing outwards to the ball / target line (from a down the line view) from p6 when just before p6 the clubhead was behind and above the hands. Thanks
It’s already on that trajectory. It was pre determined by the way you slung the club behind you in transition. It is simultaneously accelerating downwards as it is simultaneously gaining velocity as your radius of rotation is expanding extending the club outward to strike the ball. This why 2d video isn’t the best for conceptually understanding but does provide valuable checkpoints. Thx!
Thanks Dan, really appreciated your description. I began exploring the idea of a trebuchet to help me understand the almost efortless power that is generated in a good golf swing. I had always hated the term swing circle and I had heard someone poorly refer to a catapult when talking about the golf swing, but that did not pencil for me. In that a trebuchet uses gravitational potential energy with speed building in a non-linear way, it does a much better job of helping visualize the golf swing where a slow turning, high torque center mass accelerates a compound armature and sling. Your spiral description and more knowledge about the actual golf swing helps complete that visual. Thanks a ton!
I think a more simple explanation would be to say that one needs to match rotational acceleration to gravitational acceleration. Then again maybe thats just as hard for those who were never physics students. Love your stuff but maybe needs more 4th grade physics for a lot of people. Maybe just say "turn at exactly the rate the club is falling?" It is hard to simplify for sure.
Good swing principles based on true physics! However, I have a further and following query: do the swing dynamics and gravitational component vary for taller versus shorter golfers?
If we want more speed wouldn’t we need to use the lat muscles to assist gravity and thus rotate faster to compensate. Bryson says he pulls down hard with his lat muscles. If we don’t assist gravity then we won’t hit the ball nearly as far. What’s your opinion..
Dan do you advocate the use of the lat muscles to gain speed in the downswing. The pro seems to promote a very gentle hit which doesn’t generate much power. What say you?
@@cdunne1620 if you pull with your lat muscles you will immediately compromise balance and somewhere else in your body you will become simultaneously restricted and you will lose speed. The problem is that you believe that contracting a muscle equals making the club go faster. That is because the human body can only consciously feel resistance. You cannot tangibly feel true acceleration. So it thereby has an absence of feel. You need to maintain a weightless and unrestricted feeling in your body to truly understand speed. It’s a waste of time for a person to pursue speed until they can understand this in their own body. Turn the pro upside down and you will change your mind that it delivers a gentle hit. The design is to incur air resistance to allow you to go at a pace where you can learn and truly understand the delicate coordination that is pure efficiency. Thx!
Dan, the model of the spiral staircase is interesting and unique to your channel. How would someone add greater speed if they are at the mercy of waiting on gravity to accelerate the club head downwards? I have swung your pro and the sensation is spot on.
Simply rotate faster! The extending that is perpendicular to the line of gravity is the speed multiplier of the swing. What must stay constant is the balance of the rotating system of your total body and the club. Thx!
Hmmm...I have been wondering if bad swing plane was causing me to hit myself in the side of the face with The Pro. In turn, it feels as if The Pro is encouraging a flatter backswing in an effort to keep from hitting the side of my face when it comes around
The idea of "swing plane" is probably the biggest hinderance to the average golfer. Before they knew anything about it, they were fine, but as soon as they attempt to create a "swing plane" it's slice city. Another detriment is that the average golfer falsely believes that the shortest route from the top down to the ball will also be the fastest and therefore hit the ball farthest, but the opposite is actually true. They're thinking is completely wrong. Example: In an auto race of a 1/4 mile a car will be moving much slower than at a 1/2 mile, therefore the golfer should actually be thinking of taking the LONGEST route back down to the ball in order to have the time to build as much speed as possible before reaching the ball. Your device THE PRO teaches this but I doubt anyone realizes it. With THE PRO you can't cut the corner and force the cylinder onto the ball, you have to lead it all the way around the track a.k.a. the long way down. And that track is a spiral staircase ...
Spot on!! Really appreciate your comment! Everything in our world and universe moves in geodesic paths which are the curved equivalents of straight lines. It’s understanding that “trajectory” relative to the task that will unlock your body’s natural ability to learn it! Thanks! 👊👊👊
Completely agree. During my professional years my teacher and mentor David Lee talked a lot about this. He said if someone is trying to tell you where your swing plane is don’t walk away….run! Unfortunately a lot of the modern teaching involves positions.
Maybe for some, but motion is three dimensional and having a different perspective could unlock something you were never aware of. So if I’m getting you to perceive it differently or at least opening that door a little bit for you, then I believe that’s a good thing! Thank you for watching! Good or bad I appreciate your time! 👊👊👊
I subscribe to your RUclips channel and have purchased the PRO training aid. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to transition the PRO swing to my actual golf swing. Wish I could because everything you teach makes so much sense! I’ll keep trying!
@@BOBPERIO2 thank you for your support! Please send me a video of your swing with the PRO through the CoachNow app. I will give you feedback and make sure you have the model on the right track. You are an out of box thinker Dan Martin. We all know, that the golf swing is like a car crash, ie the car stops and the passengers fly through the windscreen. Remember thatTigers arms are decelerating into impact. Conversely the amateurs arms are accelerating into impact. The faster the arms move, the slower the clubhead goes. We need to talk more about the braking systems in the golf swing. Tigers arms stop at p4ie transition and then catapulted to P5, with the clubhead lagging behind. The arms then decelerate to P7 impact, with the clubhead accelerating. We need to talk more about these braking / acceleration / deceleration systems!!!!
Thx! The important thing to understand is that you don’t need to force acceleration or decelerations. They are a natural part of any rotating system. If you activate your muscles to slow a part down it’s just as bad as activating your muscles to speed a part up.
So excellent explanation. And I can tell you it works!
