Hi Dan - I wish I had discovered you 10 years ago when I started golf. Your techniques are transforming my game and making it so much more satisfying - and easy!!
This is really great stuff. Mike Malaska also advocates for the same drill of one arm swings. You two probably share a lot of the same philosophies. I think you and him are arguably two of the most informed golf instructors in RUclips (and probably beyond)! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
This is such a good video both for its content and how it builds on previous videos by Dan. Wish I was learning this at 33 vs 73, but still very helpful. Thanks, Dan!
Dan, great stuff. I have my Pro, and I use it. One thing that has really helped me is the idea of the club going “out” more-more horizontal- as centrifical force TAKES it there. I was always trying to hit from the inside with a “scoop” motion- the curse of amateurs. Now that I have learned ( from the Pro) to feel the natural force of theclub to go OUT more- naturally- I am making MUCH better contact. Power comes naturally when the ball is hit pure in the center of the clubface. Great info, as always Dan!
I don't quite understand "proportional to" concept, but the exercises feel right,thanks..your device is similar to how Edward Jones taught the feel of swing motion almost 80 years ago..he initially used a string and small knife or weight...great for teaching feel and smooth motion with a putter...unfortunately, most contemporary teachers try to teach swing motion through mechanical position training..inherent contradicting method, but keeps students coming back...Jones was like a mystic and PGA frowned on his methods...keep up the great work as these videos help the common man/person who can't afford expensive lessons...Stressdr..happy holiday 🎉
Phenomenal lesson!! I have been taught personally by David Lee ( Gravity Golf ) for years. You have similar concepts, however, your explanation is simpler to understand. I am going to get myself a "PRO". Makes so much sense!! Thanks Dan!
Thanks Dan, I own The Pro and love it and your videos. My favorite thing to do is swing the Pro and my six iron together for five or six swings and then incorporate that feel to hitting a ball
Very interesting. Thanks for the explanation. So to increase club head speed you need to increase the body turn and arm swing in sync to keep the club portional to its position. Does this mean the wrists act only as a hinge and don't add speed by themself? Thanks
Dan big fan of your videos! What are your thoughts on squaring the club? Specifically flattening/bowing the lead wrist. I think most would agree it’s a necessary move but it seems to go against the idea of manipulating or torquing the club.
Can't wait to hear/read the answer to this question, Michael. Dan's thoughts on this are so important and helpful, as so many teachers talk about the positions you are discussing. Great way to keep encouraging Dan to expand and expound on his theory of the swing.
Thanks for asking this question Michael - I was just about to ask it when I saw your post which deals with my query perfectly. Hope we get a reply from Dan the Man!
Great Question! The torque i'm generally talking about is leverage torque (like using a crow bar) instead of axial torque which would be used to manipulate the face or keep it relatively square to the arc. The axial torque is pretty nominal and so you will see various wrist shapes in good ball strikers. The leverage torque is what desimates the flow of the swing and causes all the bad shots. That being said, if your grip is good, you shouldn't need to put much axial torque on the club. Thanks!
Great video, Dan, I have recently taken this concept and tried it in my chipping and pitching and it works incredibly well. In fact I think doing it in shorter shots is a great starting point before working up to longer shots. I tried to come up with my own interpretation of this to help me get the feels and I came up with this. “Move your body and arms in such a way that you feel no pressure in the hands throughout the swing”. Certainly for chipping and pitching, from the top of the backswing, I’m almost letting gravity do it’s thing and I’m then moving my body and arms so that it keeps up with the club and therefore doesn’t produce any pressure in the hands. Would be keen to get your thoughts on this.
Scott, definitely great feels for the short shots and I think for many players, especially those who try too hard to rotate their pelvis, could really benefit from the same feels in the full swing as well.
My lead side & arm is the most dominant. How can I use this in my swing to achieve the motion you are describing here. Can it be done from the lead side being my dominant lever???...I just can't make it work for some reason.
A golf swing is neither lead nor trail dominant. The entire system works together and must work together to truly create repeatable energy. if you are trying to pull from your lead side, you likely are making the swing way more difficult than it needs to be!
Thanks Dan for this very clear perspective on swinging - I Just purchased the swing pro ! Do you have any videos on "short game" swings. pitching / lobs / sand - i presume the concept of swing without putting force on club is the same then how do we accomplish that with a smaller radius ?
I have recently taken this concept and tried it in my chipping and pitching and it’s works incredibly well. In fact I think doing it in shorter shots is a great starting point, testing yourself off tight lies around the green. I tried to come up with my own interpretation of this to help me get the feels and I came up with this. “Move your body and arms in such a way that you feel no pressure in the hands throughout the swing”. Certainly for chipping and pitching, from the top of the backswing, you’re almost letting gravity do it’s thing and you’re moving your body and arms so that it keeps up with the club and therefore doesn’t produce any pressure in the hands. Hope that makes sense.
Thanks Dan. Another great video! PS Can I take it from your demo swings that the clubface in the b/s doesnt need to be kept “closed” as many teachers seem to want nowadays?
Ian, it really depends on how your grip is placed on the club and your wrist conditions. Ideally I prefer the club face to be very square to the arc when on the functional swing plane to eliminate additional axial rotation to square the club face.
I followed your lesson today at the range. Not forcing the club improved my ball striking, but I was unable to generate much speed and as a result my distance was significantly reduced. Any suggestions to gain speed. Thank you.
To create speed you need to learn how to move your mass in transition so it lengthens and stretches the joints/muscles from the pelvis all the way up to the finger tips. This can be trained by using the PRO and the impact pad. It's actually quite intuitive when the shaft is a rope - it's more difficult to do this with the golf club, but essential to learn!
Love your videos Dan - very few other teachers are talking about the forces involved in the swing properly. Great job. Ps I’m not sure the word proportional is the right word for what you’re saying. Perhaps ‘relative’ to its position is better? Please feel free to disagree/ explain if I’m misunderstanding. Thanks
Hi Dan your device will work perfectly the moment a golfer simply learns to swing back with their trail upper arm and then swing forward more rapidly with their lead upper arm. The golf swing is only one percent action on our part and 99 percent reaction on our body’s part and your swing device when correctly swung will prove what I am saying is true. Cheers
@@danmartingolf thank you. Your device teaches a fact about the miracle of our muscles that few people are aware of; that they can only lift thing up or steady things in a single spot; but never lift things down; only gravity does this both inside and outside our body. So a swing of our club is simply lifting the club up with the clock wise movement of all the muscles inside our body and then lifting the club up again to the finish of our swing with the clock wise movement of all the muscles inside our body. Yes we are unable to perceive this; but can see the results from your device and major improvement from our swing.
Hi, I just ordered the Pro. Are you familiar with Paddy's golf tips, where Padraig shares his insight into the swing? I am particularly interested in what he shows in the video I will paste below, and my question is if the the drills and movements he describes (particularly for example at around the 11:30 where he is swinging the shaft of the broken Orange Whip consistent with the swing your are describing or is he doing something fundamentally different? At 12:40 he even says "the head of the club must be thrown at the golf ball". ruclips.net/video/jdJ2bHvzwo8/видео.html
Tour pros have a difficult time telling you what they actually do because it is a property of their body, not their intellect. They perform a golf swing with the same ease that you would have touching your nose with your fingertip. I've met Paddy several times on some of his commercial shoots for Wilson back when I was on their staff. He's such a great guy and funny character! When he tells you he throws the club at the ball - he's describing HIS image of the natural extension and unfolding of the arms and club that happen simultaneously. If you literally threw the club at the ball using the shaft, you would struggle mightily! Thanks!
Generally a good idea. Excessive increases or decreases in grip pressure is a good indicator that you are trying to use your forearms and wrists to swing the club vs the inertial flow from rotation doing it for you.
I don't know, you don't know - I think he doesn't know either. Also interesting that there does not seem to be many (or any) independent reviews of this training aid.
If you are trying to control the clubface, then you are likely swinging with a lot of inefficiencies. The clubface simply needs to be held with proper alignment to the players hands & wrist conditions.
Hi Dan - I wish I had discovered you 10 years ago when I started golf. Your techniques are transforming my game and making it so much more satisfying - and easy!!
Thx so much!!
This is -hands down- probably the best golf instruction video ever uploaded on the internet.
Mr. Martin, where have you been all my golfing life. I only wish I had discovered you many, many, many years ago. Thank you!

Winter is here. This is my RUclips Golf video binge season. I'm gonna study your videos for the next 3 months.
Thank you for helping me to understand the golf swing.
Happy to help!!

Thanks Dan. You are like a physics teacher who's also a golf coach. Amazing stuff!
Thanks 👍

That is exactly correct! That's why I call it a golf SLING, not a golf SWING!
Realllly good.

You can purchase at mytrueswing.com

That's fair! As long as the molocules stay in alignment!

DOES THIS MEAN THAT YOU OUGHT TO TRY TO MAINTAIN THE SAME PRESSURE IN YOUR GRIP THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SWING?
Generally a good idea. Excessive increases or decreases in grip pressure is a good indicator that you are trying to use your forearms and wrists to swing the club vs the inertial flow from rotation doing it for you.
I manipulate because it is too hard to make square ball contact when swinging.
I think he is just saying not to use any other force than gravity and your turn to let the club swing .
The term "swinging the club proportional to its position" doesn't make sense to me. You need to explain it - what is proportional to what?!
I wish you would have gotten an answer to your question. I've been going through his videos for a few weeks and this one puzzles me as well.
I don't know, you don't know - I think he doesn't know either. Also interesting that there does not seem to be many (or any) independent reviews of this training aid.
with that swing you can't control clubface. It's all timing.

Way too technical
