Terrific video Coach. My ball striking and distance improved when someone described the golf swing as more of a SLING, not a swing. It just made so much sense. The lead leg is a brace but also a brake, in your example.
Single best piece of advice I've heard in all golf instruction ever. I spent my entire 40 years of golf life trying to apply an exercise in futility of applying an accelerating force into the ball and failing. This led to a massive effort in getting into taught possitions only making me get worse. This is the so called secret that explains how to swing.
I watch way too many golf videos. The most BRILLIANT explanation it’s how to use the GROUND to slow down to gain the whip effect👍 that’s a key way to explain the importance of ground forces. I want to control tempo but never can. I see why
My guy said a whole lot and a whole bunch of nothing at the same time. I’m sure he’s got a nice and consistent swing, but his teaching is somewhat vague. Kinda just addressing the obvious 🤷♂️
Brilliant never had it explained so clearly definite lightbulb moment! Now get ready for the other RUclipsrs to come up with their versions. Thanks Coach.
Love this drill! I see so many people trying to “hold lag” or get the hands to the ball before the club head. By that time, it’s too late and you’ve hit a push fade. People don’t realize that you need the club head to pass the hands into impact for the most speed to be delivered to the ball.
True to an extent but only with the driver. With most clubs if your club head is level with or past the hands you have early extension, which also loses you power for a number of reasons. Most clubs you want to be compressing the ball which means keeping hands ahead of the club head
@@joshfuchs5411 Agreed! Irons should have more compressed hits causing back spin and elevation for softer landing. While driver and to some extent longer clubs want less back spin and more carry and roll for stock shots. To me, more lag is not necessary unless you don't have much. It just happens. That is for the average golfer who will most likely have problems trying to control direction if they try to add/hold lag.
Very interesting to hear this. I teach something very similar in piano playing for what is supposedly just a drop on the keys. It's actually a slowing of the arm before contact to allow the *hand* to be thrown out (without the weight of the arm piling hard into contact). I use the same whipping example myself. I always wondered about this similar issue in golf (I used to play a little but was useless) in relation to flex. I used to think you should accelerate through contact. It seems common to teach that. However, it certainly makes most rational sense that if the hands were accelerating at contact, you'd be bending the club head backwards and actively causing more lag between hands and clubhead. I suspected slowing before contact might be better, but I think this is the first time I've heard someone teach the concept. I was literally searching for slow motion films that might confirm it, when I landed on this video. Any thoughts on other sports though? I'd imagine that cricketers and tennis players have to actively accelerate into and through contact. Presumably the difference in golf is just that the flex is so signficant that you really need to let the unbending provide that late acceleration. Would this be similar in any other sport? I'm unsure. I feel like cricket almost certainly needs active acceleration of the hands into contact (with the more rigid bat) whereas I'm slightly on the fence with tennis. Just maybe a tennis racket could have enough flex for the same concept to apply?
Thanks! At one time I knew this stuff, but my intent has wavered and lost sight of these basics. I had immediate results by shifting my intent to the advice you presented in this video. The extra snap/speed certainly helped, but the lead leg push had the direct result of squaring the club face, improved compression and low point control. All that came free. Tks for bringing me back to a key and simple fundamental.
Tried and tested at the Range this morning. Amazing! Hell of a lot more distance which Ive been struggling with for so long. Ive watched hundreds of these videos, for years and I can honestly say, Ive never heard anyone explain it like this.👍 Thanks Coach!
Very useful image created with the focus on hand speed. I have recently been able to create that feel with my driver (at 61 years of age actually hitting it further and straighter now than 10 years ago) I am playing to 13 handicap driving, chipping, pitching incredibly well with a horribly inconsistent iron game (fat, thin with rare incredibly feeling pure shots)...for some reason I feel all those good feels with my driver, 3 wood, hybrids and long irons but I struggle replicating that swing feel with my 7 iron 8, 9, PW...etc..I think the shorter club makes my swing more mechanical and less dynamic...loosening my grip pressure is helping. Thanks for an excellent lesson...Will let you know my progress.
Good luck my friend, I'm in the opposite boat at the moment, 6 foot 200lbs 36 years old and always been long and straight off the tee, walk up to it, grip it and rip it. This year I really started working on my irons and getting good compression. Focus 60/40 weight to my front foot, then my only swing thought is keep my left arm straight as possible and about parallel, feel like I'm just trying to stretch my arm straight back from target line. You'll feel ur left side from ribs down get tight, doing that while thinking keep my right elbow tucked into my ribs. Keeping the 60/40 in my feet the whole time, when I feel my left side tighten up all I think unloading that motion and throwing my hands and butt end of the club straight to the ball. The body just falls in line and no thoughts after that and I'm getting consistent, almost feels like you didn't even hit the ball, irons strikes......and now after watching this video I've finally figured out why my drives have gone to crap haha my iron swing and all the work I've put in with it has caused my hands to be ahead of the driver causing my brand new push fade or massive slice
Brilliant! I have been seeking an explanation of swing tempo as mine just didn't feel effective, and this hits the nail on the head. Will be practicing this weekend. Thanks for the vid.
Awesome. Not a lot of coaches talk about this concept, probably because the pros all do it already. But an amateur does the exact opposite. He starts with the upper body not the lower body, comes over the top with the shoulders, his head moves toward the target instead of away from it, and he throws everything into impact instead of slowing the body down to release power into the clubhead. Thank you for sharing!
I've been working hard on path and face control for the past few weeks and I've just come off the range thinking it was now time to start working on developing more club head speed. Can't believe how timely this video is .... thanks Lockey!!
I had that thought process in my younger years, that probably why I was always complemented on my effortless smooth swing.. This 80 year old man would like to thank you for your tip..!!
Great video! This makes perfect sense and haven’t heard it this way before. The missing piece was the last “slow” and using the ground for brakes. Love it. Went down to the sim and tried it right away and increased speed on 6i from 85 to 92 in literally 5 minutes. Mind blown.
Very nice explanation of a concept not easy to explain. When considering the “Mcilroy drill”, how should we think about lag… that is supposed to be desirable? Thanks.
In the second frame of your 4-frame image , during the backswing, you are putting pressure on your trail leg, correct? For me, it's almost like I am slightly swaying back. This helps me with power, but i know the term swaying is bad in golf.
I do realize that as you rotate through your swing at the point of impact you do have to kind of slow your hands down to get the clubhead to come through and I guess that's called the release.. or snap of the towel moment?. I've noticed with my swing if I play the ball what feels like forward of my left foot versus the inside heel that I will get a much straighter and much longer. Chad... So I'm thinking the snap is occurring for me forward of my left foot. Would that be correct?
Interesting - i had a lesson recently where this approach was encouraged and this clip has helped explain some of the theory. Will take a while to embed though, i think.
LOL… I never thought sibling squabbling would come in so useful for golf, but point taken Coach! It sounds counter-intuitive, but in terms of physics it makes a world of sense to get that energy out to the end of the club. We do the same thing with hammering nails, throwing things, chopping trees, etc… It’s like the good ole “Heave…ho…”. Of course…golf clubs are a little harder to control at times. Love this though!
Hi Lockey, i completely agree with you and understand the principle, you stated your club head speed was only 120mph, yet you hit a driver 270+ yards (250m + in metric) I am 55, club head speed of 200klm (120mph) and 210m carry, So my question is, does money make your ball go further, Brand new clubs and balls etc, if you were to use a set of clubs that were made 10 + years ago, and a golf ball made 10 + years ago, would you still be able to have the control and distance you have now? Just a thought as it is sometimes very frustrating to think you will achieve these things, but never will as it is price prohibitive? Love the channel, cheers Paul

I know it wasn’t the point of the video but the hand speed at the top really really helped me and stopped me getting so wristy in the down swing! Consistently ten yards further today at the range!!
Using a towel made it so much easier to visualise. I think it’s the same action when throwing a Frisbee, getting the hand to stop to impart all the energy into the disc. Thanks.
Thats good stuff.....can you help me with my grip? The club slips in my hands towards the golf ball at the completion of my swing. If I grip the club say 1/2 inch down from the butt end - after my swing , Im right at the butt end of the club. Im a 4 handicap golfer and have a neutral grip but cant stop this. My left hand glove also wears out in the palm. I may be regripping at the top and letting the club pivot in my fingers away from the left hand pad. Dont know how to stop it. Help
My handicap has stuck, so I need something to get my driver to carry an extra 20. Although if I could chip........ Interesting video Coach , will give it a go at the range !
Nice vid Coach 👌 When I'm feeling that I am lacking power, I have a similar feel, but for me, rather than hand speed and then trying to break, I try and feel I'm getting bend in the shaft, half way down. Naturally I think you have to apply the breaks to get the energy out. Thank you for validating my thoughts, I have never come across someone describing the action of generating power this way. Really good, practical advice for amateur golfers, in my opinion 👍
Never seen a video like this before and I ve watched quite a few ! Been working on my rhythm and slowing my swing down and this has put a lot of things in perspective. It’s not all slow. Thankyou, Will work on this on the range. Just want consistent rhythm otherwise it’s great strike , poor strike.
Thanks for that. I had a few days recently when I felt the sling effect and I got 25 yards longer with 7 iron. Then it went off again. However seeing your point about pushing off the front leg makes we realise that's what I don't do.! I'm pretty sure I've been pushing off my back leg and probably why I don't turn thru very easily... Cheers
There are a couple of holes at my course where it is easy to let a driver go. There are few occasions where I have used the fingers to whip through the ball rather than the arms if that makes any sense. When you do, this is such a massive difference in distance and power. I guess it does feel like the cracking of the towel analogy used here or is it something different? It’s a little bit confusing.
Timing the sling through impact is one thing, but control of the follow through straight line past secondary impact and front divot while not flipping left spinning sideways is more difficult, for me. Perhaps the body rotation needs breaks at posting and facing target as the lagrip slows to sling? 8:38
Can't wait to try when I hit he range tomorrow. Never Ever heard this. Picked up golf when I retired 8 yrs ago. Hacker to start but slowly improving. Used to slice constanly when swinging hard, but this winter in FLA started swinging left across my body. Working to correct that. Not a long distance hitter. At 65 would like driver to carry 140/150 in the air and also develop the technique for a smooth fairway swing to get ball up in the air instead of linedrives. Thanks!
Is the iron swing the same as the driver in this aspect? I feel like I feel like I add speed to my iron swing, long irons in general, differently than I do my driver.
Awesome lesson. I’ve noticed you and most other pros have what looks like a cupped lead wrist at address, particularly with a driver. Is this so or is it just an optical illusion? When it comes to the moment of strike Hogan and many teachers online say the lead wrist should be bowed, but your wrists still look cupped (at least on your practise swing). What do you say to that Coach?
Game changing👌👌. Tried this out last night, worked so well with irons/hybrid. Ended up hitting some wild blocks with my driver though, Any idea why that might be?
Wow... you knocked that "concept" out of the park for me, or should I say... All of my siblings are cowering in the corner restricted by a new flurry of towel whipping mania... seriously, I still haven't got the top of the swing and the club head transition synchronized with the left knee and foot pressing into the earth... since that's going to require more brain cells than I currently have... I'm going to have to watch more videos... thanks again. top shelf stuff!
I learned this recently and have had to adjust my club selection by 2 or more (if I used an 5 iron I know use a 7) it feels so good. If only they went straight
Makes sense. When the hit feels good, you feel the dip, you feel yourself in a correct position at impact, you feel the click and the ball come off the clubhead with sweet power, ease and accuracy, and to feel all that you you feel the pause, the moment, the brake. You feel you held something back, just a bit, to put yourself there, and you feel a bit behind it and in position. This video seems to identify why you get that feeling - when everything comes together like butter, and you know you've executed a swing you need to replicate and execute consistently. And you know it's in your bag - now just to coax it out, on the course.
Do you intentionally add hand speed from the top of the backswing? For me the initial move of my hands from the top of the backswing needs to feel more passive (this promotes a smooth transition and more consistent impact) and then I intentially add speed as I approach the delivery position.
Thats not what I am saying in this video no. BUT if it works for you keep doing it. If you want more distance you might have to think about measuring and changing at some point!
Funny how you can think of these things differently. I think of a strong left side that I'm hitting against, sorta like there's a wall there, and unloading the hips first. Great video.
What about someone who has a shortened back swing due to flexibility issues? My club goes about perpendicular maybe a little more than that at the top.
Well discovered. A similar principle as the cracking of a rawhide whip where the handle travels slowly then stops and reverses direction...the tip then breaks the sound barrier. Research the principle of angular momentum.
Because the club hasn't travelled far yet, find a still of a Rory with his arm parallel on the downswing and look where the club is, it's not even got to vertical. The angle between his lead forearm and the club hasn't altered at all. His hand are moving fast through the air but the club is still lagging behind, the last thing he's trying to do is throw it in the opposite direction to the hole.
Terrific video Coach. My ball striking and distance improved when someone described the golf swing as more of a SLING, not a swing. It just made so much sense. The lead leg is a brace but also a brake, in your example.

Would this cause "pulling on it"/standing the shaft up?
I've always thought of having passive hands 🤔
Awesome lesson. I’ve noticed you and most other pros have what looks like a cupped lead wrist at address, particularly with a driver.
Is this so or is it just an optical illusion?
When it comes to the moment of strike Hogan and many teachers online say the lead wrist should be bowed, but your wrists still look cupped (at least on your practise swing). What do you say to that Coach?
Watch this....

Really good Coach, really well explained, I'm definitely going to work on this.
Great to hear!
When do you start cocking/hinging your wrist?
Coach Lockey I am 70 and new to the game when I do this I lift my head is it because I am not htting down with my lead foot ?? Great Videos
Hi Coach Alan TGC great tip but with Irons doing this how do you stop hitting behind the ball?
Why would you hit fat?
Game changing👌👌. Tried this out last night, worked so well with irons/hybrid. Ended up hitting some wild blocks with my driver though, Any idea why that might be?
What Foresight range are you using on your GCQuad?
Brilliant explanation Matt! Loving your videos!! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Wow... you knocked that "concept" out of the park for me, or should I say...
Great delivery, I can’t wait to try this…it makes perfect sense to me!! Thanks 🙏🏼
Never heard of it, very interesting indeed. Something to practice as I am at the range parking lot right now😊
Always admired the Coach’s swing.
Nice video, well explained - hand speed only been thought about due to GEARS and the stuff that AMG boys been talking about for years
I learned this recently and have had to adjust my club selection by 2 or more (if I used an 5 iron I know use a 7) it feels so good. If only they went straight
Brilliant description bro! Thank you!!
Wow, I never thought of it like this.
Thanks.
This Pro is absolutely insane!!!!!!! I told you many times ♥️♥️♥️
Makes real good logic. Now I need to apply it. Thank you. RAy
Excellent explanation. Thank you
You are welcome!
Is this only for drivers? Or also irons?
Do you intentionally add hand speed from the top of the backswing? For me the initial move of my hands from the top of the backswing needs to feel more passive (this promotes a smooth transition and more consistent impact) and then I intentially add speed as I approach the delivery position.
Thats not what I am saying in this video no. BUT if it works for you keep doing it. If you want more distance you might have to think about measuring and changing at some point!
Thanks coach I believe now I get it. Beautiful explanation and demonstration.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks I’ve been working on this and that drill will help.

Great video coach. I will be putting this into play this morning and Saturday for the comp at Staddon Heights. Report to follow
Never works first time ,takes repetitive strikes before it becomes engrained .just my thought
Good luck!
eureka
i get it. finally.
incredibly generous of him to share thanks
Funny how you can think of these things differently. I think of a strong left side that I'm hitting against, sorta like there's a wall there, and unloading the hips first.
Great video.
Good stuff!
Awesome explanation of the feel and drill. Great vid 💪
Appreciate it!
good stuff. I feel like i struggle w the slowdown into transition. I often feel like I "lose" the club at the top.
Try speeding up at the start like I mentioned 👍 hope it helps.
What about someone who has a shortened back swing due to flexibility issues? My club goes about perpendicular maybe a little more than that at the top.
I will let you know how it goes. I understand it all but can I put it into practice? Thanks good video .
Hope it goes well 👍
Well discovered. A similar principle as the cracking of a rawhide whip where the handle travels slowly then stops and reverses direction...the tip then breaks the sound barrier. Research the principle of angular momentum.
Love it... i'll try this ASAP
How does fastest hand speed at lead arm parallel on the downswing not equal hitting from the top?
Because the club hasn't travelled far yet, find a still of a Rory with his arm parallel on the downswing and look where the club is, it's not even got to vertical. The angle between his lead forearm and the club hasn't altered at all.
His hand are moving fast through the air but the club is still lagging behind, the last thing he's trying to do is throw it in the opposite direction to the hole.
good advise i will try this thank you
Great video coach ..I like slower hand speed..I find I am straighter and longer
Super Great advice here
