    After 50 years of theoretical & practical study of the golf swing & observing the teaching methods & reading the books of all of the great instructors, I rate this demonstration/explanation as the best ever analysis of the fundamental motions of the golf swing. This simplification/demonstration of proper golf swing body movement is definitely an “AH HA” golden nougat for every beginning golfer, and should accelerate the development of a better golf swing for every golfer. Thanks for making golf more fun.

      Why 50 years? Jimmy Ballard explained all this clearly in the 1970s and 80s; and much more. Other 'instructors' since then have just copied and stolen his breakthrough ideas, tweaked them, to their detriment, so they don't seem to be directly stolen and have given him absolutely no credit at all.

    Put a long sleeve shirt on, or a jacket, but leave your arms out of the sleeves. Put your arms across your chest, inside the jacket. Now, simulate a golf swing. The only way to sling those empty sleeves through, to a full finish, is to do what he’s describing in this video. You’ll notice that the sleeves lag behind, but go through with tons of speed. THIS is the “feeling” that he’s describing! Now, hit a ball with this feeling. The actual “hit” will feel delayed, just as he said, but the speed will feel effortless. You’ll also not even feel your divot, because the club is now accelerating through the hitting area, as it should. This is the same “sequencing” that pitchers use. They step towards the plate first, then turn the hips, then the torso, and chest, then the arm lags behind, and lastly the wrist releases. You can pretty much use any sport as an example, where speed, and power is needed. Throwing a football, hitting a forehand, hitting a baseball, etc. Golfers are afraid to be athletic, because the ball, and club face leave very little room for error. You have to get out of that, and learn to trust yourself.

      @@Carlos-qh2fm Absolutely true, my friend. You ever notice? Practice swings are (ironically)fluid, with effortless speed, and you can pretty much shave any blade of grass that you want. However, that little white ball scares the shit out of people. It becomes their “target”. I’ll take one, or two full practice swings next to the ball, then step up and repeat it, to hit my shot. The ball just literally gets in way of that final practice swing. I played bad today, and still shot 75. Don’t get me wrong…I’ll still hit one slightly thin, or slightly heavy on occasion, but I swing the club freely, with zero fucks given. lol. You MUST learn to swing the club freely, to play good golf.

  • @living9377
    @living9377 6 месяцев назад +2

    Mr. Pratt, this advice is spot on. It is very simple. It makes you wonder why so many people have all these compensations. The main issue, I see for your average golfer, is lack of mobility which hinders players from being able to make these moves correctly. If there is tightness present, the body will force unwanted movements to avoid pain. That’s why some folks stand up through the rotation, or the arms take over in order to get the club back on plane, or wrist flip at impact to square the club face. Mobility exercises are as critical as practicing the golf swing. Folks who sit at their desk all day for work will have very little hip mobility and flexibility to complete this rotation which critical in the golf swing. Proper grip, with the rotation you showed, assures that the club will be on plane, club face will be square at impact if club face was square at takeaway. Folks need to stop sitting in these awkward position at jobs, at home for long periods of time. It is recommended that they get special chairs or stools that align the spine which prevents the tightness that forces these unwanted movements. That way they can enjoy the game and work toward playing golf at par level. Great explanation. More people need to watch this video. Hope you also do videos with dynamic stretching with bands which shows how to get the appropriate mobility to achieve the correct golf swing. Thanks for sharing! 💡 💯⭐️👍

    Hello Steve, thanks for this video. This was the missing piece I was looking for in my downswing. Now I got in my mind the concept, and on the Driving Range I have test it. It works in a fantastic way, the problem is to make this movement more natural and not too forced (for me) because the tendency to use too much the arms is still strong. So now it is a training job, but the important thing is that i got the point. Thanks a lot.

    Steve, I just got back from holiday and I have been keen to try your light bulb moment. Trying to get hips correct and not early release plus always being a sweeper your thought of being in a side on position was magic. I certainly need more work at it but everything seems to get into position without even thinking about it. To also hit ball turf was a bonus. Probably the BEST tip I have not only got from RUclips but from the many coaches I have seen over many years. A big thanks !!

    So many times, titles like "AHA lightbulb moment" are just click bait and nothing more. In this case, though, Steve is not lying. This is what the swing is supposed to be, and it's what most of us struggle with. For me, as a "stiff" 58 year old, this is not an easy move to pull off. It looks easy, but in reality it will take some time for me to get there physically. But why bother doing anything else? Every beautiful golf swing you see is derived from this motion. Thanks for the great video Steve.

    Steve, Well tried this on the course today without going to the range first. I swung about 80% and was more accurate than i ever was and getting solid compression right off the first tee. With the driver on the downswing 1) pressure to the lead foot keeping hands back then turning the shoulder and being conscious of the side of the body inline with the arms at impact. I feel less effort, my lower back feels fine and it requires no small manipulation moves and these are big muscle moves for improved consistency. The difference i found between irons, hybrids and fairway woods compared with driver is my trail hand pushing through impact is delayed while keeping my hands inline with the "side" of my trail leg/body. With all other clubs i found when i tried to delay the hands at the side of my body I pulled my shots so I focused on turning lead hip and pushing with trail hand sooner in the downswing only and my strikes were straight and solid. Steve do you find your students pull shots with irons and fairway woods when trying to mimic what you do with driver?

    After back issues I have developed a hook. Just starting to realize Im not rotating enough in a sub conscious effort to protect my back. Your video reinforces the idea for me to rotate much more and earlier and try to get front on at impact. Thank You

      Make sure you have foot right foot and knee motion to allow the lower spine to keep up and keep stress low.

    Wow this really is a great base to build from. I have always had best contact when I thought about leaving my hands back. This absolutely is the aha I needed. I’m going to work this relentlessly to ingrain in into my brain !! Thank you !!!

    Going to work with this today and see what happens. I swing out to in to much and at impact it is still on an inside tract. I can control it and get about 220 out of it. But I feel I should be at least 250. So I feel my swing is loosing power and maybe this will help. Thanks for the tip.

    This is the most beautiful range I've ever seen. What an amazing playground/practice space. I'll be taking your lesson here to my much less picturesque or functional local range. Cheers

    crazy, this works off another concept to add. If you stick out your arm like you said and slap with it but rotate it 90 degrees up, its EVEN better. you can feel elbow close to the body and get the right plane

    Fantastic timing Steve. I at times have a good body rotation with poor release and just the opposite at other times good release and poor body rotation. I say body rotation as my coach has so often pointed out the whole body needs to work in sync. Thanks.

    Sir, how to avoid hooking or coming over the top if i rotate lower body and not the arms . Arms sooner or later will come outside to in as my trail shoulder as i rotate will pull the right arm as i rotate .

    Hey Steve, I don’t know if you read these comments or not. But you need to turn on your say thanks button on your videos because I wanted to send you a tip for this lesson that was excellent. Others like be better have that turned on and I can send them a few dollars as a thanks.

    I just had a lesson on this exact technique. I immediately began to hit my 6 iron in the high 180-yard range, which was about 10 yards farther than normal. However, when turning my hips on the downswing, I had a hard time keeping my eyes over the ball. They wanted to turn as well and I was hitting the ball (somewhat fairly well though) with my eyes already looking down the fairway. I would assume it's important to keep your eyes/head over the ball while turning your hips though? Any tips or suggestions on that?

      The feeling of looking down the fairway early is not a bad one.

    Just came from the range where i tried out this idea. I hit the straightest iron shots of my 8 yr golfing career. Loved that. However, my 8i only goes 140 yrds now, whereas i've been hitting it 150-160. I'll try a few tweaks to get the power back but this idea is a great baseline i can always fall back on.
    Thank you, Steve!

    Great lesson.
    Force = Mass x Acceleration.
    I need speed, body movement and club head timing and positioning.
    Back to the range.😀
