Brilliant video! As a coach in South Africa, I’ve heard all kinds of opinions about Christo’s swing, so it was fantastic to get clarity from Greg. I personally think Greg is one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. Great video, excellent content, and I can’t wait to see more!
Fascinating video. Old PGA pro, long retired, putting in my "2 pennorth". I agree pretty much all you say, but there is more to it. Christo's short irons are still way too short for him. For his swing to look classic, he would need longer clubs, lighter heads, more upright and stand closer. This would put less strain on his back, knees and hips. This is probably too much of a change for him but I would recommend some movement towards that. Without such major change, I suggest that he makes small changes to his iron release. His driver releases well ("money") because of the speed and momentum - he lets it go. With short irons he is trying to hold on to the club, guiding it rather than releasing it. Rory McIlroy does the same thing with similar results, a two way miss, toe shots finishing short right, as the club head is pulled away from the ball, weak (not decisive) shots going long left. This "holding the face square" is a popular idea, spread by pros who do not understand physics and do not do it themselves. The reason that he is dipping lower on the follow through with short irons is that, in an effort to "hold the face", he is following through too low, upsetting his swing plane. When he did as you suggested, staying up after impact, his follow through and release became easier, on the chip shots actually club pointing right of the target, not slightly left. So, same thing that you were saying but from a different perspective. I would also suggest slightly less grip tension on the follow through. I doubt anyone will read this but it keeps my mind active now that I can no longer play/teach.
I agree with his club makeup. Longer more upright. But it might be all baked in now. That's a big change trying to get much closer to the ball. Sight lines will change which can be hard to cope with under professional pressure. It can even affect the relationship to putting. He's young enough to make the change. But it could be a long process that hinders his current momentum to the top of the ranks.
@@MichaelShinosky Agreed, as I suggested, a gradual change might be possible over years to protect his back but his swing would change. I once made up a set of irons for a young lady beginner who was exceptionally tall with long legs and short arms. They were 3 inches longer than standard ladies, so very heavy and still not long enough. She managed though I wished that I could have had lighter heads available. I also have a friend who is 6ft 5in with very long legs. At address his back was almost horizontal with short irons but, unsurprisingly, he had to give up golf because of back problems.
@@MichaelShinosky As long as his coaches don't get him into some of the crazy positions like Niemann. At least Christo flexes his knees to take some strain.

Another great video from TPI to keep me from having good night´s sleep.. This video and Meronk´s and Iona´s before. Sleep is overrated so please keep posting these. Great to get to see how also these top players´ struggle with parts of their games and how you guys tackle the issues. Thanks!
The first thing that came to mind after the iron explanation is why not try One Length irons? It seems like it would be easier to stabilize around one height adjustment at his height.
Subscribed! Wow, what a great video! Really fascinating dialogue between Greg and Christo, then the collection ... and interpretation of data. Had a chance to see Christo up close over 18 holes this past spring at the Georgia Cup. Man is he impressive. He has speed, power, and finesse. The sound of him compressing the ball is otherworldly. He says in the video "I hit it hard ... hit it long, and I would say my short game is pretty good". He is being very humble on these accounts. All these skills were on full display at the Georgia Cup that day. If he manages to fine tune his mid and short irons, watch out. I can't wait to see how he progresses. If he can stay healthy, and improves even just a little bit, watch out.
As an amateur golfer, if I could chat with anyone in the golf world for 15 minutes it would be Dr Rose. Thanks for mentioning EE & Iona's vid. I followed that trail & spent the whole night watching. The last 20 mins is gold. I early extend and like Iona says... it's hideous LOL. And I noticed that I've always struck the ball with my irons off-center on the toe side. Did you experience that too? Is that a by-product of early extension?
Love, love, love this! I was stood behind Christo on the 12th tee Thursday at Hoylake and was instantly a fan. Think the ball speed on that shot from reviewing the highlights was 194mph! 🤣👌Such fascinating content, I could watch this for hours! 👍
I think you know when you have a great instructor when he knows the problem but shows you the correction from green and works back to the tee, while still allowing the student to remain the “artist.” Amazing job sir 👏🏽
This was an excellent video, thank you for the education. I’m not 6’8” but christo and I have similarities in mobility and strength, and we have similar misses. I have changed my short term (and long term) goals to increasing full body strength and mobility.
That was a really good session. I'm interested to know what his hand path is like ...driver vs wedge...were the hands lower thru impact..higher.. or same ?
As someone who always feels like they're diving at the ball and getting stuck.. this really gives me something to think about. Cant wait to go mess around with this concept.
Incredible how technology has changed & how good this will help others with the data & analytics with the golf swing. His transition is different but totally can be fixed.

The upper-lower body strength thing was very clarifying. I'm a +1, so I know what I'm doing more or less, but I've always struggled to get my lower body to "quiet down." May have to build the upper body a bit more.
100% what I experienced as a junior as well. I'm not tall, only 5'9. But I had enormous lower body power, and learning to control wedges was a hassle. Now, 38 years old (22 years later) I just cruise around 127mph with the driver, and I can finally control wedges and short irons :D
@ I’m alright, 0 hcp. We have a short season in northern Sweden, and a lot of snow 😂. Play some in trackman during the winter, about +6 there - but that doesn’t count 😎
Imo it's also an equipment issue based on his height/frame. I wonder if a shaft company has ever r&d'd a very long Graphite iron shaft that was counter balanced to keep swing weight from getting out of control what would his swing look like? I mean, imagine if any one us took our ~35" wedge and chopped off 5" in length and how'd that work out? Driver works because shaft is much longer. He physically doesn't have to go as far down.
12:41 Its makes total sense. Unless the USGA gives him and exemption to shaft length, he'll never be able to push off his legs/get to full extension/power before or at impact. He'd miss the ball by a foot. I'd like to see you fit him for an "illegal" club. One that fit his height so he could fully press off the ground at impact. His numbers would be insane. Hell, even his driver, he's bending his knees down to well after impact just to make contact,.. he could use 4" maybe 5" more on his driver. Of course he can't hit a wedge. I'm a pretty damn good golfer... I can't swing my 5 year old nephews 24" clubs for sh!t.
Thanks for the content. One question: I understand your teaching arms go up when body goes down and arms go up and seen where Jamie S long driver did exercises for this with you. When I feel myself squat it’s when I am dropping arms into the slot (is that the wrong sequence?) and it’s not until the upper part of my lead arm pins or presses against my lead pec as I bring my lead shoulder up and back ( pulling handle up for club head speed) creating the whip that my arms pull up and push back with the lead foot to extend my front leg. If I squat while my arms are still going back in back swing then the trail leg is not extending for power as many players do. If I squat after I shift to lead side which causes my arms to drop in the slot I am not simulating arms dropping while jumping that you teach. When should I squat?
Can we just have a round of applause for the early panning on from the camera man of his girlfriend - completely pointlessly needed for this video but shows that the camera man is indeed a man

You said that his irons were 1 1/2: longer & that he had too much of a drop in his downswing, which works perfectly for his driver. Could his iron game trouble have been improved just by getting shorter irons?
I'm the same height and maybe get 112 club head speed. Trying to keep everything stable and hit the fairway, I don't care how far it goes at the moment haha
I feel as though this could be a fix to Cam Smith’s chronic driver issues too. Please reach out to him if you agree - I’d love to see him carving up the majors 😅
He’s got a lot of lead wrist extension into the downswing. He even shows this during his preferred position in the downswing, the toe is rotating down to the ground more which is a more stable position. He’s losing stuff right because the Face is opening on the way down. Tough to sync it all up from there.
I'm 70 but in fair shape. I have a bad left knee, 45 years ago tore my meniscus, ACL vertically, and lateral collaterals, they have scared over I'm sure by now. I play three days a week and walk, but have some stiffness later, what are your thoughts on relieving the pressure.
with his height and his timing issue, I would wonder if One Lengths would help him maintain his posture so he doesn't feel like he needs to go down and pick his wedges.

Doc Rose for the win. At this level it seems to be much more about the body. Their hands/arms are so good they'll generally figure out how to deliver the club.
With his swing he might should try what Bryson does with his irons. Find a shaft length that gives him the cohesive feel he’s looking for and make that the foundation
Just curious, how many 12 handicappers have you turned scratch in the past decade? I know at least one who lives 30 mins down the coast and crushes me every time we play. Legit started playing 20 years after me lol Keep up the great work!!

that is rhe first thing I saw was how ackward hisawing looked. I thought he needs longer clubs. Didnt realize it was illegal to have clubs that fit him.
Doesn't need all these tech and tools to know why he hits it long. The kid's is damn tall and athletic, and his height alone creates insane amount of leverage. I bet you that guys with an average height swing same way won't get anywhere close to his speed because they can't create the same amount of leverage. Sometimes TPI's gotten so wrapped up loaded in tech and medical terms and complicated that they themselves surprised and impressed at something so simple.
He's almost using reverse vertical force with such a big leg collapse. Which means he's relying on his long arms for leverage and speed. My coach would have him sorted in a short amount of time. His 'super power' with the driver was impressive however he still definitely dropped too much without powering back upwards vertically. Also his concept to rotate left all the time (horizontally) rather than pushing up vertically needs to change. I thought these guys would have identified and pushed that a little more. Be interesting to see him in a year.
Obviously you aren’t going to drastically change his move, especially with driver, but it’s hard to not look at his flexed lead leg through impact and not think he’s not maximizing distance/power and would possibly sort out his iron swing issues. Any comment?
In the first minute of seeing his swing I could see his legs collapsing; clearly the low end of the bag is too short for him. Longer shafts with lofts adjusted for his yardages = problem solved, don't need $50K in test equipment.
Drinking game. Words are super power. Christo can play Colossus. That Sam Snead bow legged squat move allows Christo to utilize ground forces. A lot of us amateurs mostly utilize rotational force and don't understand why we can't hit the ball any further. Ground force is the missing key for most. Flipping at impact is another distance killer. Working on these 2 issues has increased my distance substantially. I'm a golf nerd and go to drills are the only way most of us will get better. Unfortunately, most amateurs won't do this.
We will be opening a few opportunities for amateurs to come to TPI and go through an evaluation. Pretty limited availability (maybe 300-400 slots per year) and first come, first served. Cus you don't want 130 club head speed on a 50 degree wedge 😂. Also, the clubs would feel so head heavy unless they took a ton of weight out of the head.
What if he used close to standard length irons. He has to use a 46" driver on tour. He is use to going down and getting the ball. Longer length irons are making him feel stuck.
I think that his sagging right side approaching impact and after, much worse with the irons, could be hard on his back in the coming years. Maybe part of the reason is that he is so tall, but also could be that he stands too far away from the ball.
Just way to much lower body 125 yards and in. We know lower body generates power. (Loading and Exploding)(Jason Glass) As we move closer and closer to the green I feel we have to start eliminating or controlling the amount of power (loading) thru impact. I've learned with my students the best way to control the power is to move the feet closer together and controlling how much the trail foot heel comes up off the ground. Just like the fundamental of a green side or fairway bunker of controlling the trail foot for more stability thru impact. At some point the closer you are to the green then shortening the backswing along with closer feet together and controlling the right heel action is extremely important What I do for my students is on the driving range for 125 yard and shorter shots I will video the swing from down line and then calculate how much the distance the feet are apart and the angle between the ground and the right trail heel off the ground. For most of my students 80 yards should be no more than 1 degree, 100 yards 9 degrees and 125 yards 14 degrees. Just want to say how much I greatly appreciate all the info you put out there. You are the best.
This is a no brainer is it not . With that speed you lose the finesse that makes you a great short game player . Bryson has said it and now Kyle Berkshire . Its very hard to have both . Whats wrong with longer clubs for the guy ?
Huge thanks to Christo for allowing us to watch this session. That was so cool

I think he would be a perfect candidate for Bysons one length irons maybe???
Damn that swing reminds me of Big Randy @NLU!
Greg Rose, the Sherlock Holmes of the golfing world ...more please 👍
At 6'8" I would assume his irons at longer than standard length - if there was no 46" limit on driver length, what length should Christo be playing?
Not necessarily. Tall people can also have long arms and their swing can be more vertical.
You'll even see some taller players with shorter clubs.
This is interesting data, does this apply to most players with above average CHS using verticals appropriately but in more smaller dosage?
Not really. I don’t think we’ve ever assessed anyone with mid 190’s ball speed who was under 200% bodyweight vertical force
@@MyTPI No I meant in regards to wedge technique
Same name, I’ve bet on this guy a few times just because of that lol. Love to see this!
Where can I book this guy in ?
We will be creating some space in our schedule for assessments of the general public in 2025 (they won’t all be conducted by Greg, but by an in house biomechanist/staff member who uses the same system/IP) . Email Chamonie.vinci@mytpi.com and she’ll get you information (or add you to our mailing list to be the first to learn about when we open bookings)
Longer iron shafts. NEEEEXT!
One length irons?
amazing how low he has to get to make contact. he can't get longer clubs because of the rules so he just has to get down there somehow
Nobody thought of that. You are a genius.
@chezchezchezchez thank you!!!!
that is rhe first thing I saw was how ackward hisawing looked. I thought he needs longer clubs. Didnt realize it was illegal to have clubs that fit him.
My ears are bleeding from the amount of times this guy said “superpower” ☠️
Doesn't need all these tech and tools to know why he hits it long.
The kid's is damn tall and athletic, and his height alone creates insane amount of leverage.
I bet you that guys with an average height swing same way won't get anywhere close to his speed because they can't create the same amount of leverage.
Sometimes TPI's gotten so wrapped up loaded in tech and medical terms and complicated that they themselves surprised and impressed at something so simple.
Holy SHIZ that is a steep swing.
Dude is a MONSTER.
I have always been great with my driver and it wasn't until I just focused on my shoulder rotation on my irons that they finally clicked.
First impression for me was this is a “Byron-like” move.
Great video. Man would I like to spend a day or two with you.
We will be opening a few opportunities for amateurs to come to TPI and go through an evaluation. Pretty limited availability (maybe 300-400 slots per year) and first come, first served. If you’d like to be added to our waitlist for first access to future appointments, please contact Chamonie Vinci (chamonie.vinci@mytpi.com)
Wow 🤩
So simple, a minor but major change
why doesnt he put a drive length shaft on all his clubs
Cus you don't want 130 club head speed on a 50 degree wedge 😂.
Also, the clubs would feel so head heavy unless they took a ton of weight out of the head.
What if he used close to standard length irons. He has to use a 46" driver on tour. He is use to going down and getting the ball. Longer length irons are making him feel stuck.
I change my mind. Hover your irons ball height
I think that his sagging right side approaching impact and after, much worse with the irons, could be hard on his back in the coming years. Maybe part of the reason is that he is so tall, but also could be that he stands too far away from the ball.
He should 100% try one-length irons
Thanks! Great information! I appreciate it.
This is a no brainer is it not . With that speed you lose the finesse that makes you a great short game player . Bryson has said it and now Kyle Berkshire . Its very hard to have both . Whats wrong with longer clubs for the guy ?
I'm guessing he played clubs too short while he was growing up and adapted his swing to that.
The irons are too short for his body hence the disconnect..simple..🤗
He stands too far away from the ball, which is going to make the irons even shorter.
Good video but it is kinda funny that the issue is the most obvious thing that you notice the first time you see him swing
