Robert DeLeo was not only one of the best bassists, but also one of the best songwriters of the 90s. He and his brother Dean's knowledge of unusual chords and musical styles gave STP their distinct sound. Weiland's incredible vocals were such a perfect and natural fit. In their prime, they were one of the best bands in the world.
Yeah STP kicked ass!!
Yes, STP stood out for musical sophistication. That was clear from Core onwards. They're one of the genius bands, pushing creativity.
Well said and I totally agree. Unfortunately Scott's inability to control his demons ruined it.
You got that right! Some of their chords are so hard to get to
One of the most underrated bassists of all time
What? He literally has tons of videos in admiration
He was the John Paul Jones of the 1990s. Superb player.
Both of them cited James Jamerson as one of their primary influences, STP always swung harder than their "Grunge" counterparts, although to me the "Grunge" classification of STP was erroneously tagged to them. It was like every Baritone who's band used distortion was automatically "Grunge".
Still is
Well said! Especially since were largely overshadowed by their band mates.
Absolutely he’s brilliant and he has a solo album coming out. Can’t wait to hear it and the army of anyone album is awesome
Damn straight!!
Robert DeLeo is a very underrated bass player. Love both him and his brother Dean's work.
Robert Deleo was my main inspiration in the 90s. Dude knew how to bring the song alive.
Robert DeLeo is a criminally underrated bassist. His bass line in Interstate Love Song is an absolute gem, just like many other STP bass parts. Great video, as always!
Can't wait for part 69 :D
How about Tony Levin for the next video? He's an absolute monster, one of those session greats who make a good song great with their playing - and one of those very few who can be easily recognized by a single note. Another idea is the late great Mick Karn - a fretless wizard from another dimension. Nobody played like he did. Both are among my most important inspirations.
I'd say he's an underrated bassist, but any bassist who knows what's what recognises exactly how good he is. Probably underrated in terms of his overall contribution to the band's sound.
Just learning bass, (guitar player for years) Plush is my favorite song to play on Bass, got it down to the point that I learned it on guitar, earlier today actually. It's more fun on Bass though.
One of my favorite bass player/composer ever, Robert is a genius. His basslines are amazing!
YES I LOVE ROBERT his fills in tripping on a hole are godlike
now do paul barker pls
BTW I'd love to learn those fill note-by-note.
He is one of my fave bass players of all time.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES, I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SINCE A LONG TIME!!
you forget piece of pie: the most massive and powerful song of STP, a huge sound hammer tha smashes the notes
Ever since the Debut of Stone Temple Pilots I've always thought that Robert DeLeo was an awesome bassist. His style, and his bass fills were solid, and they really filled the sound.
thanks for spotlighting my favorite bass player here.
Brilliant player, one of my favorite of the 90s.
So underrated...his bass lines are some of my favs to play!
Gotta love how crunchy his tone typically is
Robert is one of my biggest influences... that kind of bass player I wish to become someday...thank you so much for your wonderful work Paul, a hug from Italy.
P.S.: speakin' about great bassists from the 90's and (in my opinion) underrated like Robert, can I suggest new episodes featuring Mick Grøndahl or Pat Badger? Wish you the best Paul ❤
Leo reminds me of a hybrid John Paul Jones & John Wetton. De Leo is epic and criminally overlooked.
Another fantastic episode. There is always something to learn from any bassist whether you like their music or not.
This episodes "how to play like" are one of the best thing for bass community. Thank you
Amazing bassist!!!❤️🤘🏻
He's a great guitarist too. He wrote a lot of the songs.
Stp rocks...defined the prolific 1990s rock landscape
Robert is a phenomenal bass player!
great video, Can you review Martin Mendez from Opeth?
As a bass player, Robert was/is a massive inspiration to me.. Such a versatile player
I have a bit of an unorthodox request but you should cover Tim Feerick of the band Dance Gavin Dance. That band has a lot of different musicial styles and he always had a lot of catchy basslines to complement every song. RIP to him
standing by this!! such a killer and inventive post hardcore bassist. Tim deserves his flowers
My favorite bass player ever, bar none, period, end of story.
He really is the James Jamerson of hard rock
Probably one of the most underrated bassists of that era. Sour Girl and Trippin’ are nuts!
Great video as usual! Thanks to you I'm learning how to play like my heroes.
Actually I'm copying some of their techniques to apply them to my own style.
Aye! Lovely
He is one of the best bass players ever
Pruno is awesome!
Chris Slorach (Metz)
Michael Parks Jr. (All them Witches)
thx
Always informative and insightful Ronnie Lane please
Great episode, request an episode on Tommy stinson and/or Eric avery
I grew up on stp in the 90s. Played base and then started again 30 years later at 46 again because of watching Robert a interview with him then revisited old videos and concert footage.. playing
Hell yeah, I dm’d you about this on Instagram awhile ago. Very nice
Thank you very much!
My mission now will be hammering this at every new video: "How to play like dUg Pinnick of KING's X - Bass habits - Ep**"
Very influential.
But how do you get that bass tone like on dead and bloated
I got a fever and the only cure is more Grunge
