- Robert DeLeo, Eric Kretz, and Dean DeLeo remember Stone Temple Pilots' critically acclaimed, game-changing third album and their hilarious, low-budget "Big Bang Baby" music video.
Incredible album. Arguably the band's most creative effort. Songs like And So I Know and Adhesive really showed the band's musical diversity.
Incredible tune. Hidden gem in their brilliant 90s catalogue.
I like what Robert was saying. Scott's simplicity musically is what made STP what it was. If Scott was something else, they would have been a different band. Scott was special. His melodies, singing and lyrics gave the DeLeo brothers' music...life.
they were a great band, only because of scott! sorry, yeah, then they were a great band with that dave kid for the talk show bit, that was also awesome!
Doing more with less always produces more creativity.
An absolutely intriguing album. I really think they could've talked about the making of this album 5x more than any other albums of theirs. It's haunted. There's so much stuff going on in the background, like secret little audio bits, horse sounds, talking, digital glitch-like sounds, and of course the different rooms they recorded in. I used to listen to that album over and over trying to figure out what they were doing *beneath* the music.
tell you something, beginning is a different and you are not.
I agree completely, check out their mtv doc from 1996 there’s footage from the sessions for that record on that
It's an underrated album. Every track is tight and melodic
It’s a shame that they only toured for six weeks for this album, my favorite, and allegedly Scott’s favorite too.
Yeah, i would have to say that Tiny Music is my favorite STP album as well.
They toured that album during November-December ‘96 and then in the spring of ‘97 they played many dates in the U.S. which, strangely enough, recordings of those concerts are harder to find than the ‘96 tour.
I was lucky enough to see them on that tour. I remember Scott came out in a 3 piece suit. He looked amazing and they sounded HUGE!!!
so turn it up'n'burn it!
I saw this tour in San Jose - was an amazing show. Scott was so electric onstage.
Robert comes across as such a good dude
My second favorite STP album after Purple. Probably Scott's best album. His lyrics, melodies. Beautiful
talk show was great, wow, but yeah, it was good that scott was able to get back in charge of crap! dave was great, and so were the boys- well-played, boyz~
I would say Scott was just as good on no4. but Tiny music was probably one of his two best albums
Love that they can still laugh about the fun times recording and creating.
I had no idea they thought the same thing I did. Scott looked soo different from core to when he started with velvet revolver that I didn’t even know it was Scott Weiland
Oh boy. I still sometimes compare photo’s of Scott Core/Purple era feat. later on. As I find it fascinating as how it sometimes indeed looks like 2 different people.
The weird thing was that I bought a MTV unplugged DVD circa 2004 and Pretty Penny was on there. I fell in love with the song and the band. So I immediately tried to download a lot of their songs and looked at their video’s. Little did I know that the frontman of the band I was falling in love with was the same Guy as the Guy from Velvet Revolver, the band who just dropped the song Slither at that exact time. Was such a mindfuck back then 🤯. In a good (and speaking of the above) bad way. Cause he was day and night in vibe, physical shape to the way his singing voice sounded.
Top 3 best albums of all time just because of how unique and amazingly produced it was....
i am so glad Scott insisted on a bad ass two chord riff and we got Tumble in the Rough out of it.
I never knew this story, always LOVED that song. So funny to hear how it came about
Lady Picture Show is overall my FAV from Tiny Music, but Big Bang Baby is my all time FAV tune of any sort where the drums were recorded on the front lawn. Thanks Eric for sharing that and not letting me forget it.
Big Bang Baby was a great video...I remember when it came out, and me and my friends were like "Man, this is the cheapest video I've ever seen, but it's great!", and this was the era when all the TV signals were analog to begin with, so add the analog CRT TV with an analog signal and you got a killer looking "lo fi" music video that's solid gold! It always reminded me of the way public access TV programs look...that kind of vibe.
Their creative peak.
Tiny Music was a great record. Adhesive is the most beautiful ballad. Scott's vocals on that track are amazing. I think it is one of the most underrated songs ever. I feel bad for these guys when they are interviewed and talk about Scott. They all seem pretty level headed and appreciative of what they had and just wanted to make music. I love Scott but it must have been very, very stressful being in a band with him. They took a lot of "time outs" from touring and lost lots of money for him to get better and go to rehab but he just couldn't turn it around.
I'm w/you about "Adhesive", it's been my favorite STP song since it came out. Such an interesting song, great dynamics, mix of instruments. I've been trying to find a video of one of the DeLeo brothers dissecting it.
Nice post, Derek--Thank you... :)
Edit: These 3 guys--Eric Kretz, Robert and Dean DeLeo--ALWAYS seem like Nice Human Beings, don't they?!! :)
I've Never, Ever heard or seen any "Less-Than-Gentlemenly" Speech or Behavior from Any of Them, which I find refreshing--and it makes me look forward to seeing even more videos of them...
such a great album, and that trebly small-amp tone stood out a mile among all the heavily-compressed beef you heard in the 90s. people never gave STP a fair shake back in the day but they were/are fucking brilliant, doing for jazz what Led Zeppelin did for the blues 20+ years before. some of the most pungent chords you'll hear out of any short-form rock band.
Dean DeLeo has always looked like Jeff Daniels' character in Dumb and Dumber. That hair! Lol
These guys are awesome
I love these conversations. They're so emotionally raw, honest, genuine, funny, heartfelt....I cried during parts of it.
Best album
My favorite band of all time. Please don't stop playing together. I've watched you since your earliest days as a band in San Diego at Somas.
very precious videos!
great
excellent interviews
Great album one of my favorite bands
When will this album be recognized for the masterpiece that it is? On par with Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's.
bold claim. but i think i agree.
Favorite stp album by far
One of the greatest bands ever
Rest in Peace Scott Weiland. Music isn't the same without you ~
Dean is so right..I ALWAYS thought Scott looked so different in the core era from later in his career!!!
Scott went from husky burly boy to David Bowie it’s crazy
170lbs at 5'11" is "husky"? 😂
Adhesive is the best song they ever wrote
Fav STP album no doubt. Prob the most mature album out of their first AMAZING five records.
"Tiny Music" was the last great album from the band. I'm so sorry things didn't get better with Scott.
This musicianship is so critical now and is absolutely not around anywhere today..... If you know and understand, you know and understand.... This American culture today in 2023 completely sucks.... To know the country we used to have .... Depressing man ...
It absolutely is still around. You’re just not looking anymore. And it won’t be force fed to us anymore given that streaming killed the business.
King gizzard, big thief alone is enough to bust your argument apart. The issue is the masses won’t hear it.
This is their best album.
Yea, the Big Bang Baby video was so weird when it released. I remember talking about at school with my friends, 6th grade. We all liked it though but yea, we all thought it was just super bizarre. It's aged incredibly well though. STP are far more creative than they often get credit for.
Love that album. Probably my favorite one. That’s tough though to say because they have so many incredible albums. I started out playing many instruments but Robert was a big influence on me learning bass
My favorite as well. What an awesome time to be alive
Not bad😊❤Scott Weiland could play some guitar, he was truly gifted, talented, troubled and missed 😢🌺🌈😌God bless you Scott Weiland, rest in peace ✌️
"BA DA DAA DAAA DA DANT........BAH DA DAA DAAA DA DANT!"
Amazing songs album: Big Bang Baby, Tripping an hole on a paper heart , Pop loves suicide, Lady Picture Show...
The comment at the start of the video regarding Scott's physical transformation and him looking like two different people is most interesting... Because if you watch the music videos for "Big Bang Baby" and "Trippin' on a Hole," Scott doesn't look that different from how he did during the Core/Purple years. Yet in the video for "Lady Picture Show," he really does look like a completely different person. What's really interesting is that from the time of STP's breakout to his rehab stint in April 1996, Scott's natural hair-colour appeared to be a golden, almost ginger, blonde. Yet from the time of his return from rehab in November 1996 to his death, his natural hair-colour is clearly black. Or at the very least, significantly darker than what it was. Could Scott Weiland have been replaced by a look-alike? Or did the effects of kicking Heroin in 1996 change his appearance that dramatically? Adding more fuel to the first theory is how Scott opened STP's first show back, after his rehab stint, on November 4th 1996. ""Hey, you guys hear about the rumor that STP got a new singer?"
Illuminati and Topanga . Special place
Best album all time by far from any secular band
SCOTT WAS THE MAN, AND Y'ALL WERE LUCKY TO HAVE FOUND HIM!
AND Y'KNOW THAT'S TRUE~
Illuminati confirmed. Again
Why?
sinistro em
Why are there snippets of dialogue in the beginning of each video that have nothing to do with the actual discussion?
Anyone else start playing that riff over and over after watching this?🤣
My question is , would stp be a better band?
The album has such extreme stereo mixing that it ruins some songs for me. Wish they’d do a new mix
Robert has alluded to them re-mastering Purple next and then after that, Tiny Music. So fingers crossed.
I totally agree on that. Could make a fantastic album even better
“He didn’t know how to play an instrument” to all those who think you need to be instrumentally trained to be in a band, wrong very wrong.
Scott weiland is a generational talent - not just from a vocal / songwriting aspect, but showmanship as well. Very few will ever have the talent to cover the gap in knowledge.
@@maseratimitch2024 I suppose my use of an intensifier at the end of my comment was a bit extreme 😂
Pongan subtítulo en castellano
Man the drummer won’t stfu
I'm sorry but singers are alot different to musicians, if your guitar breaks go and buy a new one, the whole focus is on the singer, carry that one but the band is a band, but he was flesh and blood and eventually something had to give and these guys don't see that.
zzzzzzzzzzz........
His voice sounded like a different person....it sounded much worse.
dude, shut up, everybody understood that you like the core and purple more than the others, omg
His voice evolved, listen to 4, he comes back to his roots
Illuminati
