This one was much easier to understand tho! Love the content anyways.
The Flygon champion fight was legendary. All of his plans crumbling due to getting outsped for some reason and it coming down to pure luck, and the RNG gods smiling upon him. Congrats to him for his victory.
Awesome to be a part of this. Even though we didn't win, it was a ton of fun. Super impressed by all the Nuzlockers on how fast they got through things too!
30:40 Whacko staring down a guaranteed KO from Ice Beam and actually landing the Leaf Blade on Kingdra for the win. Dude's got some stainless steel balls.
I'm gonna be 110% honest with you, Whacko was carried by RNG for SO MUCH of this run, and telling Flygon to go for the Megahorns was basically him just using that RNG to help someone else Flygon may have been first place, but the Nuzlockers wouldn't have won without Whacko's luck XD
One thing that's so interesting to highlight here is planning in advance vs. relying on luck. Nuzlockes try to minimize luck as much as possible to avoid losing altogether, while speedrunners tend to embrace luck for the purposes of completing the game as fast as possible. It's a high risk = high reward approach, but since Nuzlockers tend to think of the games beyond simply finishing as fast as possible, they tend to be more apt for contingencies and playing the odds when it favors them, ultimately saving time otherwise spent in the end. That's obviously only scratching the surface, but it was an interesting video! I wouldn't mind seeing more of these types of things for all the other games.
@gjbsarmeri3957 If you fail one luck roll in speedrunning it's over, that approach to the game grants you nothing in a contest where Draft rules are a thing.
That's actually wrong, the speedrunner for pokemon legends arceus (you can watch it on gdq), one of the best speedrunners, explains that pro speedrunners are actually the ones who account for / plan for mistakes. Pro speedrunner's don't soly rely on luck. It's a misconception. If you truly want to play the game as quick as possible, you need to account for bad luck too. That's just how it is. I do agree with Jan tho that nuzlockers have more exercice on planning specific things out. Whereas speedrunners plan the whole picture. There is a lot of planning that happens in speedrun too: for example in the lets go race (also from gdq) they explain what they do, and they explain that they use specific pokemon that are planned for specific fights: for example using starmie for the late game. That's an example of something they planned in advance.
When going for the best times Speedrunners take the rng risk, and therefore have many contingency plans, and are very quick to adapt It should also be noted there's a difference between a world record attempt and a marathon or race setting. In a world record attempt you take the risk everytime and reset if you fail. In a race or marathon consistency is more important if the time loss from bad RNG is to severe. Races are a balancing act between risk and consistency. So while it is more consistent you have to adapt to your mistakes Nuzlockers prioritize consistency above all else a single unlucky crit can make a hard-core nuzlock impossible or at least much harder. So nuzlockers are looking for a 100% consistent way to clear every battle. So at the highest end of Nuzlocks every fight is planned out to the smallest detail. However nothing is always perfect so they too need to adapt from time to time. So really both skills require consistency and adaptation.

My bets were on flygon from the start. Speed runners aren't used to crafting for battles where they are unable to use items or heal and can choose to use the most optimal pokemon so they don't have expereince with working with what you're given. Extremely great and hype video to watch and I hope to see more in the future!
I felt it was pretty easy to figure out who was who based on context, but it took a couple minutes to actually get to that point so yeah having the names would be helpful.
To be fair, speedrunners played by nuzlocker's rules. Usually speedrunners use the most optimal strategy, which would involve using a single or very few Pokémon, without any level cap, and free access to the bag. It would be interesting to see this again, but with a more speedrunning oriented rule set
Sure, but they did also have a huge number of potential advantages. Starting access to Mach bike, a draft for pokemon, the removal of a number of forced encounters (Aqua/Magma storyline) This fight, like Jan said, pretty clearly came down to overworld knowledge or boss knowledge and the Nuzlockers killed it.
I had no idea who these people were(some name plates would've helped) but this was an amazing roller coaster of a trip. I thought for sure the speed runners were just going to dunk on the nuzlockers after that start. Nuzlockers weren't using their bikes, weren't skipping rival fights, etc... but none of that ended up mattering. Over all solid battles pulled them through in the end. Great vid. Loved it.
Love the vid, would appreciate nameplates in future similar videos cause it took me a while to figure out who each pov was cause I’m not familiar with the runners/nuzlockers
Flygon played soooo clean throughout the entire run, and only until wallace did he risk wiping. Just from his type-only nuzlockes, you know he does a shit ton of prep before every challenge.
Saw some of this live, so had to come watch the edited video! As a speedrun enjoyer, I'm not too surprised the Nuzlockers outperformed on the battling front-speedrunners have every fight down to a science, but generally with only 1 or 2 specific Pokémon and a lot of X-items. They don't really have to get down into the weeds as much as Nuzlockers do, haha. Everyone did so well though! And GG to Flygon for that insanely clutch finish!
Yes wanted to write the same thing. Not beeing allowed to use items in battle and having the lvl cap really shows how much speedrunners rely on 1-2 (most of the time overleveled) pokemon and the use of items to get the insane times they do in the actual speedruns.
Honestly, I think the saving grace here is that speedrunners tend to have more rounded knowledge, i.e. anyone who speedruns professionally has probably dabbled in Nuzlockes and other challenge runs. (I know Pulse, at least, has done competitive battling.) If they'd picked people who **exclusively** do speedruns, there'd be no chance, because the skillset doesn't really require you to be good at battling--just at memorizing inputs.
Flygon finale was insane. I had a feeling the nuzlockers would squeak out a win given the rules of the game, but hopefully this inspires a new speedrunning category (or brings more life into one that already exists) that incorporates nuzlocke rules, as this video shows how much potential something like that has.
Hey Jan of PokemonChallenges. Just wanted to thank you and all the big pokemon Nuzlockers like FlygonHG and Antlerboy. Thanks to watching y'all's educational content I finally completed my first hardcore nuzlocke. And in Pokemon Black 2 (which I saw you rate as pretty difficult in your gens tier list video). I'd been trying to beat a hardcore nuzlocke of Black 2 on and off for the past year or two now and if it weren't for things I learned from y'all like razor fang flinches and having extreme amounts of patience, and of course playing around the crit I don't think I ever would've completed it. So thank you Jan, your content is pretty cool ❤
Holy shit i was on the edge of my seat for this. GG to all the participants, and amazing work on presenting this Jan. The commentary and editing was spot on!
Fantastic video! As someone not familiar with a lot of nuzlockers/speedrunners I wish each of the runners had a name display so I knew who you were referring to throughout the race but it was still a blast to watch!
I think the thing to remember about the speed run vs nuzlocke path optimization, is both are usually training specifically to dodge wasted battles, for speed runners because time, for nuzlockers because less chances for rng to punish... now the nuzkocker is "less" refined in dodging battles but they are still practiced at it, so the huge edge you were giving them isn't as big an edge, nevermind how little it actually makes in difference.
I hope Pulse comes back to nuzlocking in earnest someday, watching him lose EK and 180 back to pure speedrunning made me sad, especially since he’s super good at both but only showing it in one. Glad to see him in this race, and glad to see the sheer amount of content in the last couple days
Loved the video, it wouldve been nice as someone who doesnt know all of the people to add the names to the overlay in some way to make it easier to follow
Always love to see collabs with Flygon and Whacko. But I gotta wonder, how could the challenge have been modified to make the playing field more equal? Speedrunners have more overworld knowledge while nuzlockers have the battle experience, but making gym leaders mandatory with level caps and no items basically took away all the speedrunners’ skills Fun to watch cuz nuzlockes make for hype moments but I couldn’t help but feel bad for the speedrunners halfway through
@@Skylark0000 the skill involved in speedrunning is merely input timing. Pokémon is a turn-based rpg. By using overleved mons and x-items, they remove all need for actually knowing battle mechanics. Which is how kids usually beat the games. Nuzlockers end up with deeper kowledge of the game's mechanics, as shown here. It's hilarious that a dude doing meme strats beat all 3 speedrunners
the format was nuzlockle. lose pokemon upon defeat. no items. no planning ahead, other than being lucky drafting pokemon you are allowed to use. when speedrunning is valued upon items and using the same pokemon, it falls flat on what can be deemed a fair and balanced tourney. the tourney wasnt about who was fastest, but rather - could a speedrunner win in the nuzlocklers turf. and they couldnt, which is all good. as long as the tourney is served as a nuzlockle favored tourney its all good. a speedrunning tourney would be fun to watch vs. 3 nuzlocklers. see who could beat it, the fastest. using items, using pokemons and keep using them even if fainted. i think limiting isnt speedrunner friendly. again would love to see a speedrunners vs nuzlockler tourney , using speedrun rules.
I like the idea of the speedrunners doing a regular nuzlocke while the others do a hardcore nuzlocke. I think that would be a bit more fair. Either way this was a super fun video!
Okay, so that was insanely stressful to watch at the end. But I'm so happy with the result. Honestly, the only way I'd like to see this video go any different would have been having Smallant in there on his own team, because it's such a meme that he just excels at beating experts at their own fields of expertise, and it would have been funny.
Holy fucking shit that Champ fight with Flygon was insane. Being cornered like that and STILL pulling out the dub after everything that transpired in that fight was actually insane and speaks to Flygon's skill. Good shit, Flygon ya earned it!
I honestly expected the nuzlockers to just dominate, usually speedrunning has a set strategy that's the most optimal and if you get bad luck you just reset, nuzlockers are very used to taking a mediocre encounter and finding a weird way to make it fit, the speedrunners simply couldn't get through the battles fast enough to have there map speed matter
This was a great watch, I feel like on one hand I was rooting for the underdogs in a race, being the nuzlockers, but at the same time, Speedrunners know how to make the most of an advantage, going as fast as they can with whatever they've got, however, there comes a point in a speedrun where you accept defeat, and reset, while a Nuzlock incentivises persistance, because it doesn't matter how quick you beat the game, but if you can, given what meager pokemon you're given, so while the speedrunners could make the most of a good situation, nuzlockers could make the most of a BAD situation, which ultimately changes the question of "who's really the underdogs". What a good run, everyone did amazingly!
What a ride. If there's a next time, I'd love it if you added the names to the people. I don't know all the players and sometimes was a bit lost who you guys are talking about.
I think we need a larger sample size in order to determine who is better consistently. This was great, would love to see more. **Spoiler alert** The double Megahorn was so fucking clutch.
quick note: the wailord was definitely in range of brick break at the end of flygon's run. he said it out loud himself: thunderbolt did a minimum of 66%, and brick break would've dealt a minimum of 34%.
Suggestion for the next one: you need to overlay the people's names over their streams. For those of us who aren't on a first-name basis with the entire Pokemon speedrunning and Nuzlocking community and can also identify every Emerald route from a stamp-sized video, "Wacko and Flygon are crushing Gunner right now" is gibberish.
Fantastic video. I really love your reaction to Flygon's fight. It shows that under your dark cynical heart there's a true passion for the game and the challenges nuzlockes provide, and maybe - just maybe - it grew three sizes that day.
Thanks for having me, Jan! Super fun!
I was rooting for you all along, and I had a feeling you'd do well!
Always happy to see you involved in these community based things! Glad you obtained plot armor status

I haven’t been this stressed watching a video in a while. Great content
God what a clutch finish; that was super fun to watch!
As a long term fan of Cutthroat Pokémon I can confirm Pulse always seems to pull out the most lucky/clutch moments when he gets behind.
I'm at the beginning of the video and can I say, I love that Kidd and Jan have become close enough to be commenters on this channel
4:50 just leaving myself a bookmark, gotta make food
how was the food?
Ended up making a really nice steak ^-^
@@frost598 hell yeah, nice!
I love this shi, and this was still way more entertaining than I thought it'd be. Great content friendo!
This was great. Probably the most fun I've had watching one of your vids as a semi frequent watcher.
Pchal is the only person that I will watch a sponsorship for. Your deliveries are so good and super creative!
Such a great start to the video - watching gunner immediately hit the penjamin during the Wally scene was hilarious
jan’s best green flag is he thinks speedrunners are hot
This was very fun to watch live!
What a ride. If there's a next time, I'd love it if you added the names to the people. I don't know all the players and sometimes was a bit lost who you guys are talking about.
I think we need a larger sample size in order to determine who is better consistently. This was great, would love to see more.
**Spoiler alert**
The double Megahorn was so fucking clutch.
The tension at the end bro with the amazing smash bros brawl music was everything
I know you don't read your comments but I just wanted to say balls.
Commenting so Jan may see your glorious message
brave
quick note: the wailord was definitely in range of brick break at the end of flygon's run. he said it out loud himself: thunderbolt did a minimum of 66%, and brick break would've dealt a minimum of 34%.
Suggestion for the next one: you need to overlay the people's names over their streams. For those of us who aren't on a first-name basis with the entire Pokemon speedrunning and Nuzlocking community and can also identify every Emerald route from a stamp-sized video, "Wacko and Flygon are crushing Gunner right now" is gibberish.
i loved not knowing a single person on screen so when you say "gunner" a hundred times I have no idea who youre referring to
Fantastic video. I really love your reaction to Flygon's fight. It shows that under your dark cynical heart there's a true passion for the game and the challenges nuzlockes provide, and maybe - just maybe - it grew three sizes that day.
