Justin Meldal-Johnsen has plenty of basses at his disposal. As a producer and in-demand bassist for everyone from Beck to Macy Gray, Nine Inch Nails, Ken Andrews, Pink, and countless others, he’d have to. But over the years he’s found his 30"-scale 1966 Fender Mustang to be an ideal tool for much of his session work. While JMJ has found the compact classic to match up well for dense mixes (especially in modern music), his Mustang’s tight, bright timbre suits a variety of genres. Recently, the bass veteran collaborated with Fender to release a signature instrument that aims to replicate his beloved ’66’s sonic and aesthetic characteristics at a price point well below what you’d find on the vintage market.
The JMJ’s body is constructed of alder and comes in just one finish option, daphne-blue nitro lacquer. An aged-looking pearloid pickguard complements the "road-worn" finish, and bolted to the body is a C-shaped neck capped with a 9.5"-radius rosewood fretboard.
Simplicity has always been a key component of the Mustang’s electronics, and the JMJ preserves this by incorporating a passive circuit with one volume and one tone control. Seymour Duncan designed the instrument’s split single-coil with familiar rounded ends, and voiced it using Meldal-Johnsen’s vintage Mustang as a benchmark.
Other features include open-gear Hipshot tuners, a vintage-style string-through-body bridge, and a synthetic-bone nut. Fender adds even more old-school vibe to the signature bass by stringing it up with a fresh set of flatwounds.

I’ve watched a substantial number of your bass demos and I’d say THIS bass may sound the best to my ears.
Ive been gigging with this bass for a few months now. It’s become my #1. I use it with the Aguilar rig too.
JMJ is absolutely one of the most under appreciated bass players around. The bass on paper tiger, or Dark Star (a very meaningful tune for my spouse and I) are both incredibly ear catching bass lines that carry the songs, and his playing on Midnight Vultures is just virtuosic. And yet I can’t get any notation for a single one of those tracks with a paid subscription to ultimate guitar.
Under appreciated, gets a tribute model?
I love his lines on paper tiger! 🔥
If you sometimes need a soft and warm cushion to put down behind the band this works beautifully. Like a P it fits in a mix really well. After owning this for a while I can say its a legit instrument and worth the cost.
Mr. Cooks' playing is great today. As always he's entertaining!
I wish they'd make a non road worn version. Still would want the nitro tho.
I'm not a fan of RW but man it's a great bass I finally caved and bought it, put some Thomastik Infelds on it and it's great.
@@Iofflight78 Normally I hate the idea of fake wear. And yet for some reason this bass is an exception. Tried one a while back and loved it.
I picked one up in December and threw those flats away and now I’m rocking. Sounds and feels great.
I wish we could get this bass in the original competition colours and non road worn.
i just got a Chicago music Exchange Squier Mustang Bass, and it is lake placid blue w/comp stripes.
Fantastic bass. I used to own a '65 as a kid, and this is DOING it for me.
Might not even change the pickup.....ahhhh who am i kidding?
I always change pickups on new guitars. Stock pickup sounds fine, though.
Hard to beat for the price
Wait for the new Vintera 2 Mustang Basses in a few months.
Love it! Really want a road worn bass, and you’ve sold me on this one.
Been watching Mustang/Bronco videos all day, and most are.. not great.. this one was awesome though! Good playing and good info. Thanks!
Damnit I thought I was over this GAS
i've got one, in white-red. great instrument! you can easily play it like butter.
Road worn feel great
Thanks brother, nice tones and demonstration!
I have a 1974 Mustang with actual road wear.
Danny Partridge "played" one the 1st season on the show.
Question: is the sound more jazz bass or precision bass: anyone ? Appreciate your answer
Precision, that’s why the mustangs have the nickname: The younger brother of the precision bass
looks like a fun instrument
3:59 kills me every time
I just got this bass and I don't like it...maybe is my playing style but I keep on hearing the strings hitting the frets producing "clacking" sounds...unless you play very smoothly
AElejagaSoundz Its because you need to learn how to play flats.
Clacking is nice. Wtf do you play jazz lmao pluck softer turn your amp up and play towards the back when you play hard in the front you get the clack but that's good for metal or most rock in general
“I don’t like road worn”
Proceeds to buy a vintage bass you didn’t worn down. Road worn is not meant to make it look like you’ve been playin it for 50 years…it’s just beautiful…
Gave this a shot at my local guitar store. Plays awesome and feels incredible. The ONLY thing I don't like is the road warn... it makes me feel like a poser just trying it out.
Great pure sound
short scale bass?
Playing Come Together without sliding is a War Crime.
I love it, i ordered mine in March and it should be here soon.
How do you like it now?
How’s she sound with round wounds?
even better
how is the slap tone? is it worth waiting for American Performer Mustang series for a better Bootsier slap tone?

Here's your answer :)
Lime cordiale vibes here!!!!
if one was at a local music store for me to try would i be watching this video? idk
Perhaps I'm too fussy, but I prefer to wear a bass down myself. Pre-worn just seems fake to me.
good luck with all those poly finished basses nowadays. Will take a while to break em in.
Fender still got some nitro finished stuff, they're a bit cheaper than the American Original lineup
It’s funny, most of my instruments are older than me, I view them as unique and special tools, but tools to be specific. So I kind of like the road worn/ relic/ antiqued/ aged thing because a squeaky clean new bass feels like plastic to me. I’ll admit the new anniversary Jazz basses in pearl white do look rather spiffy, though! I like my instruments to look and feel played
I thought the same, working as a tech. But I just bought one of these for my wife, and I have to say it’s got “the feel”. I relic’d one of my personal jazzmasters a while back and it feels so damn good! I guess my point is, it can go either way. *Just like people.*
Whats the name of the first song?
Huge
It has a nice tone, but for some reason, short-scale basses just sound smaller to me. They just don't seem to have the same punch or take up as much sonic space as a long-scale bass.
John Maloney That's a myth as Steve alluded to. Short scale basses like this one often cut through a mix better than 34" scale basses, which is one reason JMJ uses one.
I'm sure they have their place, but the fact that they can cut through a mix proves my point. They have a smaller, focused sound, as opposed to the big, grounding boom of a long-scale.
John Maloney I agree. They Are fun to play. Will be cool if they had a boost switch or active
A smaller sonic space is super useful sometimes.
Muted with a pick on a short scale is super punchy as opposed to a full scale, and honestly sounds super cool. They both have their place.
Love the tone...hate the relic "road worn" feature.
Why have a thumb rest?
I want one of these really bad. Anyone wanna buy me one?
I own a 68 it was originally a student bass
sounds like a Rickenbacker
Daphne Blue baby! WTF happened to NOS instruments...why would you want a "worn out" bass out of the box? Seriously, not my taste...but I do understand the appeal for others.
Toxic Potato I take care of my 2 Daphne Blue and 2 Surf Green Strats, because I think they are beautiful finishes. I wipe down the body and the neck before I put them in their cases.
And it’s a signature model....When JMJ’s tech grabbed the bass it was worn out....so marketing?
Tuning the bass is so overrated....
Maaaaaaan, I hate that guy, I don’t know why, sorry.
Hammer-ons on bass 🤮
Idiotic comment
How dare bass player use techniques
