Dots are from wearing a watch and strumming
Chris Squire(RIP) used the pick perfectly.
Love it. The mother of pearl pick-guard looks very nice as well. I used to have a 1978 Mustang bass, bought new at the time, but this one looks inviting. Thanks.
I'm sort of the same as a guitarist that plays bass on the side. About 20 years ago I started occasionally playing bass with a worship team. After too many bass purchases, I ended up with my Squire CV Mustang bass and a Danelectro Longhorn bass - the Dano seems to play a little more comfortable and the neck is super accessible all the way up and pickups sound great... But I hate the way it looks. So much so, I bought my Mustang and found that to be a very close 2nd choice. I'm looking to swap the pickups so it was good to get an idea about what the Seymour Duncans sounded like - very nice! Don't worry about the pick vs. finger argument - the pro bassist I see, it seems like most of them use a pick. I'm going to guess pick/finger ration about 50:50.
The sound is amazing! If you want to practice fingerstyle try some slow classical pieces, like Erik Saties Gymnopedie No. 1 :)
As a fellow guitar player, I totally don't understand the need for instrumuents to be pre-worn or rusticated. It's like that fad from some years ago of paying extra for jeans that came pre-ripped.
looooool you got me with the "bass player who is in da zone" face!!!
ya i'm with you ive been eyeing one but the bings or dimples in the finish turn me off i hope they offer one with out the dings in it
It's a nice bass for sure, be cool to see some more bass related content. It's a relaxing instrument to hear someone play. Digging that foam insert sound.
Bad relic'ing feels bad man. this bass is so good in so many ways, wish I could pick one up with minor 'wear' relic, or none at all.
I hear you. I wish this was available in a pristine version, but it has so much else about it that I love. Also, the relic job doesn’t look bad in real life, and the bass feels really great to play partially because of the relic job, so it’s a trade off.
I LOVE that sound, maybe I'm a bass guy lol
Me too! I never thought I was a "bass guy," but I'm really loving playing this bass.
You should try mastering "Pulling Teeth (anesthesia)" 🤣
Relax ur wrist brother!!! U got it
Based on your criticisms of this particular model, you might want to check out the Fender Vintera Mustangs…same bass with no relic and a 7.5” radius fretboard
Thanks for watching! I did check out the Vintera, but I really wanted rosewood and a nitro finish, so I went with the JMJ. The fingerboard radius is a minor annoyance, but I really love the JMJ overall.
A pick would have caused the little dots over time no ?
Excellent presentation! I have never seen a bass like that short scale model.
For the playing demo it looks like you were playing mostly 1 and 5. True?
Thanks for the great introduction to this unusual and interesting instrument, and especially the difference in sound between finger and pick sounds. Cool!
Glad you liked it! On part, I was definitely playing the 1 and the 5 of the chord.
Slapping intensifying
That's a nice bass. @STUFFandTHINGS the thing with the tone pot controlling the volume... It might be wired wrong.
A worn mint pickguard would look incredible on that guitar
Hi. Can the Mustang basses recreate the feel and sound of the Precision basses ? Did this bass acepts only the short scale strings or can acept the standard long ones too? Thanks
I think it sounds a little more boomy and bassy than a P bass. As for the strings, I'm not sure, but you do string through the body, so you might be able to use longer strings.
Mustang basses take medium scale strings
It's easier to use medium scale strings (or short scale, depending on the manufacturer). BUT... you CAN use regular long scale strings. You just have to be a little more careful when installing them. Yes, there are people who will say I'm lying, but I've done it now for almost 50 years on short scale basses I've had without any problems ever.
Thank for pointing out the difference between a guitar player who can play bass, vs an actual bass player... And yes, reliced finishes ate very lame.
Forget about what the purists say. As far as using picks versus fingers, just do whatever suits the song. I play primarily with fingers and thumb, but for a punkier sound, I'll use a pick.
Are we going to see you channeling some Donald Duck Dunn, playing bass with a pipe in your mouth?
I used to have a standard Fender P-bass. I made the mistake of leaving it at a dude's house too long and he sold it out from under me.😠 Sigh.... Some day I'll get another bass. This was years and years ago but it still gets me worked up. Enjoy that bass Bradley! I had a friend with a bass very similar to yours and it was fun to play around on. Cheers!
I have no idea if you are even interested but you may enjoy checking out Davie504's channel. He's awesome with the bass.
I hate the purist way of thinking that you have skip playing bass with a pick and only use your fingers. Play what you feel comfortable with (and what suits the song). Great bass btw. I had the blue one, sold it in a weak moment. And now I'm getting the black one :)
