Thank you for this list. You not being a snob, and daring to include budget basses, makes this list so much more relevant. I ordered a Rickenbacker 4003W a few months ago. Hope it will be as good as promised, if it finally/ever arrives! 😅
be prepared to give it time to accustom to. They are so different in almost every regard. If you are anything like me, first contact will be Yikes! wtf is that thing. But boy it sounds really good and is most of the time worth the hassle they bring. I like the W models a lot more, so nice choice!
Yo Sapko! Long time listener, first time caller. As a long-term MusicMan player I have to say, YES! Tone control, playability and looks. Mine is a 2008, and we've been happily married ever since. Keep rocking in the free world brother!!!
I have a Squier Classic Vibe '60s P Bass. I like it more than some of my instruments that costs five times as much. It's incredibly comfortable to play and sounds great. Mine was made recently though. I don't buy into the hype that the older ones are better.
I love my Squier PJ bass. I dont know why that pickup configuration isn't more popular. It's the best of both worlds. You get that fat P bass pickup, with the dynamics of the Jazz bass two pickup config.
I absolutely LOVE my Stingray. I'm lucky enough to have that, a fretless Conklin, and a 1984 Steinberger -- 3 of my dream basses. Only took 30 years...
The epiphone brought back ptsd of a rivoli I almost bought. I genuinely bonded with it off the bat, talked myself out of it. Went back the next day and it was gone 😞😞 up there with my biggest regrets
I own only one bass. A Sterling by Music Man Stingray. I cannot recommend it enough. Amazing looks, amazing sound, amazing feel, for a fraction of the price. It might be the only bass I'll ever need, it's so flexible.
I sure hope so. I'm gonna get a Ray24, because it's the only decent version I could find with 38mm nut. I had a "real" Stingray, but I hated its wide neck, so I sold it, no regrets. It did sound amazing though, but I felt it was resisting me, so to speak.
i have the sterling stringray 5 and its so nice, the only bass i've played that i liked more was a musicman as well, but a SUB that came on tours with me and got the heck beat out of it
Hey, Danny! I’m a guitarist mostly, and in a month I’ll be proudly wearing your merch on my first gig as a behsist! Love your energy, and good luck in the finals tonight!
i think what i love most about your playing is that you like shape every chord with your whole hand and it just shows how in the music you are! you're becoming my favorite bassist (after mr. dart of course)
I gotta say it's so nice to see that the reserved demo guy turned out to have such a fun and explosive personality, it's almost hard to believe this is the same Danny Seriously dude, love your work
My first bass was a 70's Fender Musicmaster, I switched to Guitar at 1982 but I still have a 91 Fender MIJ Precession Lyte (the guys at Long&McQuade love it when I bring it in) which will only leave me when I pass.
I started playing bass again after a 15 years hiatus, and what really got me back into loving it was a SUB sterling 4 bass. It weighs a ton and half, but for an entry level bass the sound is massive. I look forward to getting a musicman one day.
My wife is a Brit so we will be watching as well here in the US. I have my heavily modified 1967 EB0/3P right here. Figure that one out. Go Kane and Co.!
Thanks man! I spent years and years in the shops in Toronto and the East Coast looking for a “real” Bass, but after all these years nothing beats my 78 Peavey T-40. It’s the one.
Danny, have you ever thought about the Reverend Mike Watt Signature bass? The Wattplower MK II ? It’s got a very unique pickup configuration , the ability to swap between a regular precision, and a reverse precision pickup… and I believe the neck pickup is a guitar pickup. Very unique and cool bass, also comes in a cool root beer sparkle color.
I just love your videos mate. You can tell when a man is of great character.Your honesty is refreshing and you can tell you'd be the kind of dipstick that would help a Yank like me out if I were broke down on the side of the road. So that's my brown nosing for today. Thank you.
Awesome basses! I've owned/played many of these over the years but my favourite will always be the Mustang (yes... I'm short). The one I use on most of my recordings is the P/J Mustang - it has the P bass thump, with Jazz clarity, whilst maintaining that classic Mustang feel. Anyway, loved the video :) In addition to being a funny wee sod, you're an amazing bass player :)
Ray 4 = best stingray. Increase the size of the control bay and put in a real preamp (the $30 Korean ones are killer) and real deal pickup and you'll have the best instrument you've ever owned for under $500. Awesome video. I'm jelly of the Mustang. I really want to even try one. Being a lefty is tough.
I own the exact black stingray you were playing and it’s my favorite bass in my whole collection. Never played one before I bought that one and it wows me every time I pick it up (which is everyday).
I have a mustang, Jaguar, and jazz bass but I also actually have that Epiphone Allen Woody Rumble Kat. I love that bass and it plays great and looks so good with its upgraded appointments… binding everywhere, rosewood board and gold hardware
.......I liked the Musicmans out of your selection......my favourite actual bass SOUND is Hugh Hopper's, of the Soft Machine, whose band was the only band, during a classical music festival in Britain, violins, cellos, orchestras, symphonies......the only band with fretted electric bass, keyboard, rock drumkit.......to be a night amongst all the symphonies......Soft Machine also played at higher volume than other rock bands, you'd think they'd be quieter.....you needed to hear Hopper at that volume. My cheap bass choice is Guild, pricey choice RD from Gibson........I'm also more interested in basses with whammy bars than other bassists. 8:10
Ric 4003 is my favorite of your choices. I play a 35 inch scale fretless 5 string Warmoth that I built myself almost always, but I’ve had a Ric 400x since 1977 for when I needed it and always will.
Great vid on basses! I've got an 80's Squire P bass I found in a pawnshop w case for $75. It was a steal!! It plays great and I'll never part with it. Love your extended vids!!
I have a Squire Vintage ‘77 Jazz Bass. I put a Babicz Bridge and Fender Vintage Jazz pickups. Like you said about your almost similar, they play like the the real deal. Not my most expensive but definitely one of the most playable!
I had the Epiphone Thunderbird and liked it but it didn't fit well in my usual setting (90% of the time I play in church) so I traded it. The Mustang reminds me of the first BEHS I owned, and recently reacquired from my brother, a 1973 Musicmaster.

Oh so many reviewers automatically rail against the manufacturer when they are discussing Rickenbackers, etc... and it's really annoying. The Thunderbird Gothic is an awesome bass. My friend has one that I played quite a bit. I bet that Epi Rumble Cat sounds very similar to my Epi Viola. With flats on that thing is the chef’s kiss of deep smooth tone. Some great choices here and some bonkers ones Danny. I sold my Gibson EB0 as the only thing it had going for it was it looked cool. Horribly heavy, and sounded like mud. And the neck dive WAS terrible!! Love my Squier VM mustang - you’re right they absolutely thump. If you can’t afford a MM Stingray, grab a Sterling - I love mine! So much bang for your buck there. That Squier CV Jaguar bass in black is my band practice bass, as it belongs to our rehearsal space = the music room of the school one of my band mates is an art teacher for 😊 Apart from its looks, I love how light and easy to play it is, as a medium scale with a very slim neck, and the pick-ups aren't too shabby either 🤩 I'm impressed how good yours sounds with Drop-D tuning! danny for prime minister
All prospective MPs would have to win a bass battle before being accepted into parliament.
Agreed... 😊
Forget that! DANNY FOR PRESIDENT OF US!
He'd have his (voter) behs behind him for that gig
Nah Danny For King
Not sure if Danny will be reffing the England match this weekend or starring in Beetlejuice 2 with that get up.
Both.

Rotosound Flats ?
