Great review. I bought this bass half a year ago without knowing anything about it. I just fell in love with it in a guitar shop. Since then I have almost played it everyday. It really changed my live and my band loves it too. It looks awesome, sounds great and it’s just so much fun to play.
It's have one, it's really a great bass. I love vintage guitars and basses but bought this as a backup/workhorse which wouldn't be as expensive, fragile or irreplaceable as a real vintage. I've been blown away, tonally and feel wise it's just so good for playing in a band. It's also light and small which makes traveling for gigs/tours just that bit easier than a big full scale bass. The finish doesn't look cheesy and I like that being nitro, it will acquire further wear through use in a genuine way.
Great video as always Patrick. I wish Fender would offer this exact bass but without the relic and in the original competition colours from the 60-70’s. Competition orange would be friggin amazing. 🤩 The closest basses to this are either the Vintera Mustangs or the now hard to get Japanese reissues.

And, it absolutely rocks, mine is my number one gigging bass, it’s rock solid, reliable, sounds great, looks incredible, and has great specs, best grand I’ve ever spent on a bass 👌

I have the La Bellas and love them, but curious about the Fender strings. Do you have a link where I can find them? I know the string through Mustang needs 32" medium scale strings, but can't find the Fender ones...
@@Hamsong Fender ships the JMJ with long-scale Fender flats installed (they don't make a short or medium scale set of those strings). Not ideal in theory, but I haven't heard of issues with it from JMJ players or others who have installed them on other short-scales. The main potential problem is that the E string's full wind is wrapped around the tuner to a point which can put stress on a flatwound which is generally a more fragile string than a roundwound to begin with, not to mention that it also screws up the string alignment behind the nutslightly which can cause the string to bind a bit in the nut while tuning. With the tension of a long-scale bass this fat wrap around the tuner could well cause the winding to break or loosen, but with the softer tension of a short-scale bass you can often get away with using long-scale strings like this.
@@karlzickrick8483 Yes. I tried the Fender longscale flats on the Mustang and they worked fine with no issues. Pretty much identical in sound, tension and feel to D'Addario Chromes to my ear...
@@Hamsong Fender strings are also made by D’addario, but I have found the Fender flats to be distinct sounding from the Chromes in my own experience though they do have a similar feel. Chromes to me sound brighter and somewhat midrange-scooped then mellow into a rounder tone with age, while Fender flats are tamer up top when new but with a more midrange-forward and even potentially “crunchy” (with the tone control turned up) tone that seems to stay pretty consistently as they age. I’ve only ever compared them on a long-scale bass though, the Mustang tends to scoop out the mids naturally so the difference may be more subtle on a Mustang. I definitely prefer the Fenders to the Chromes on long-scale basses, and like the Fenders on short-scales I’ve tried them on enough to stick with em (though I have Labellas on my Mustang these days for their signature “thump”)

Most people who complain about fake road worn finishes would also rip out their own hair and mourn for weeks if they scratched they're brand new shiny sticky instrument. If you buy a modern Fender, the finish is not going to fade, polyurethane doesn't do that, even on custom shop instruments they only spray a thin layer of nitro over a poly base and that will go yellow, but the color won't age as it would on a Gibson.

Looks like your pickup by the D & G strings is slightly lowered on one side. Was that to compensate for the brightness of the G string or overall output?
@@knives_on_static I have tried since my message. I find that there is not enough tension and that the sound is less precise. definitely needs a bigger gauge.
@@davidzimmermann6086 could also be how your instrument is set up. A slight change to the set up would be better than replacing a string or all of them. You would have to set it up regardless for the heavier gauge
the MIJ has a 38mm nut width instead of a 41mm. Also, the pickups are not exactly the same. I own a 1997 MIJ and have played with the JMJ multiple times. Both are great. IMO, the pickup is better on the JMJ. However, I find the MIJ neck more comfortable. You can always replace the pickup on the MIJ model, with Nordstrand one.
Fender is using full-scale strings on this Mustang [Look at the headstock.] The metal wrapping is going around the tuner. That's a big no-no with flatwounds, or so I've been told... Could it be THEY have been lying to us all along?
@@estebanb7166 I understand what you're saying, but most flatwound string manufacturers will tell you, "don't let the windings go around the tuner post." I've heard people having luck with winding the wrap on post if you go slow and take your time. I'm guessing JMJ is using long scale strings on his Mustang basses. Whatever works for you, but still very confusing!

I really wish they'd do a not road worn version. I'm not taken by either of the colours and I'm not keen on false ageing. It's strange that Fender hasn't woken up to the idea that this is their best Mustang and making it available in more versions might just increase sales.
Hi tbis bass acepts only the short scale strings or can acept the standard long too ? Thanks
Looks like your pickup by the D & G strings is slightly lowered on one side. Was that to compensate for the brightness of the G string or overall output?
How about another short scale? The Reverend Wattplower!
I love the look of this bass. I am wondering if some people here have used it with the E string tuned in D? What size of string do you use for that?
You can use the stock strings or regular gauge for DADG tuning
@@knives_on_static I have tried since my message. I find that there is not enough tension and that the sound is less precise. definitely needs a bigger gauge.
@@davidzimmermann6086 could also be how your instrument is set up. A slight change to the set up would be better than replacing a string or all of them. You would have to set it up regardless for the heavier gauge
Did you get a satisfactory drop D on this bass?
Damn, been looking at a crafted in Japan mustang bass for a few months now. Why choose the imi beside getting a new instrument?
the MIJ has a 38mm nut width instead of a 41mm.
8:20 Sold me! 😮
Ive been wanting this bass for years. But i need a grand to get one :(
Ok where does he say how much it costs?
Nevermind I found it
Can you please tell us what pedal are you using at 8:20?? It sounds awesome! Thanks!
Check the description, homie! It's a Fuzzrocious Lil Fella though, absolutely KILLER pedal!
@@patrickhunter Thanks, man! You're the best.
Fender is using full-scale strings on this Mustang [Look at the headstock.] The metal wrapping is going around the tuner. That's a big no-no with flatwounds, or so I've been told... Could it be THEY have been lying to us all along?
It makes no difference lol
@@estebanb7166 I understand what you're saying, but most flatwound string manufacturers will tell you, "don't let the windings go around the tuner post."
I've heard people having luck with winding the wrap on post if you go slow and take your time.
I'm guessing JMJ is using long scale strings on his Mustang basses. Whatever works for you, but still very confusing!
Dude this is beautiful
But is it really $600 more beautiful than the mustang bass you hated on your other video?
Couldn’t you swap out the pickup in the $400 bass and relic it ?
Potentially a copy of the bass used to record all of Scott Pilgrim's basslines
name of the intro song's please jajajajaja
