I hear ya "I'm an old cat man, I need something light", "these are still flat-wounds, I'm still a man" Too funny.

KYBP Cub Reporter Joe Iaquinto demos the classic FENDER MUSTANG JMJ. A versatile instrument (especially in the hands of this veteran player) the ’66 style short-scale (with a decidedly garage / punk aesthetic) is a viable alternative to the P and J, and boutique models.

Love your reviews and playing..I'm a old cat too...32" and 30" scale is my happy place..great to get a deal on anything these days especially in the guitar market..the black JMJ distressed is the one to get..I love the look..yes indeed old cats can fly on these short scales (try a sub SS 25&1/2"scale bass it's a gas)..make more RUclips please!!..Glenn in Vermont...

loved the review :) and as somebody else already mentioned. your playing too ! . I have had one of these for about 3 months now and is my main instrument at the moment. I love it so much. Will soon swap the pick guard for the one included in the bag , but I read somewhere it's kinda tricky as the pickups are screwed down together with the pick guard so researching a bit more first before taking any screws off - suffice to say when it's all in black it's gonna look baddass!! I've been playing bass for around 2 years and this is my first ever bass so kinda feel lucky . The sound you get out of this thing has tonnes of character and attitude , phat bottom ends and punchy mids - it's super fun to play. I am smallish frame so the short scale is perfect for me

Awesome! Yes, changing the pickguard, or the pickups, on this guy is a real patience tester LOL

I've only watched a couple of videos on this bass, and I already want one! Sounds so amazing. Thank you for playing different styles instead of just slapping..
You never mentioned which strings you replaced the originals with.. I'm curious.
    Thanks for the video

I’m a thumb and pick bass player too because playing with fingers doesn’t give you a deep rich tone. Just so you know, when the thumb rest is on the bottom for players like us it’s called a Tug Bar.
I’ve never been a fan of that thin metallic piano wire sound.

Do you know of any videos that explain this technique? I am searching and all im finding is double thumb and slap videos.

You are in fact the first and only person I have ever heard who referred to a Japanese Fender as "terrible"

Which strings exactly did you switch to? The Curtis Novak Mustang Fat split coil really wakes these up, btw.

so the thumbrest is just thumb rest ya? not active pickup?

  • @Shred_The_Weapon

    Wow!
My first 2 basses were an economy Epiphone emulation of the P-bass and a Fender J-bass (which I still own but scarcely play anymore). I never was too fond of trying to slap on the neck pickup of either, but this Mustang growls like a model with a humbucker. Is that Duncan pickup a split coil or a bucker?

I am a guitarist and just got the Mustang to learn bass. Can you explain more how you play your bass finger style? Maybe make a video on that? Thanks. Also, do you know if other classic bassists played that way (from Motown or other vintage pop or jazz styles?

And just to clarify, when I say fingerstyle i mean like guitar fingerstyle, playing with the thumb as you do in this video.

Awesome video man! I just picked one of these up a few weeks back and absolutely love it. I did notice the strings were a bit too thick for me too! What brand/ gauge strings did you end up putting on it?

    • @joeiaquinto9214

Glad you got one! I put Ernie Ball Slinky flatwounds 40-95 on. Perfect!

@@joeiaquinto9214 I put La Bella 760F-MUS Flatwound - .043-.104, they sounded great and were more supple than the fenders but the low E went really dead pretty fast so I think I'll try the EB 40-95

Found a short-scale with jazz body. Better balanced. Just my opinion.
