Kool dude turned out sweet! Could see in your face when you were painting it say wtf am I doing lol. Few little tips there that I learnt cheers for the vid!
If nobody has explained it, surfacing agent is wax dissolved in styrene. Added properly to laminating resin it allows the wax to float to the surface during cure and seals the lam resin making it cure tac free
Stashing the fin boxes is so fkn cool. It’s one of those requests you can easily say no to, and for good reason. So that makes me extra appreciative. It’s the little things
I live in Galle these days surfing is became fast moving business in Galle but we got very few people's know about surfing stuff.glad you've shown refurbished surf board.
So glad I found this vid. Stopped halfway on a project like this after I peeled the glass off. Wasnt sure how to fill the foam areas that chipped out when the glass came up, seems like you solved that here. Honestly you prob couldn’t find a more fucked up board that the one you used here…lol, mine is close though. Cool project to keep boards out of landfills, props!
Really wish you did a cleaner paint job. Nice pearl white deck etc top and bottom. With a black pin stripe stringer.. Great restoration on the board my man 👍
A rotary tool with a Carbide bit will give you a little more fine control and less elbow grease needed for removing bad foam especially those rail dings. Works great on removing plastic etc so it will work well for what you do.
I found one at my workplace, so I had the idea to restore one-no idea how I'll restored the bumps and chipped fiberglass though. I'm first trying to remove some residue that was left on the board, I don't know what it was.
Artistry? Where I missed that, he went for ugly and he got it. He is one hell of a fiberglass worker. He did a great job on the rebuild. Enjoyed the video very much! Great Job!!! Keep doing what your doing!!

The leash on my foam board on the tail ripped right thru the foam slicing right thru it and splitting it vertically and horizontally. I was looking for videos on how to fix it but this was an interesting distraction haha
My best friend and I have a whole backyard of broken boards we find or buy and want to do the same… but we don’t have a shop so one board hand sanding takes over a week. Still fun though

At first I though why fix such a totalled thruster, but the. Saw this was a master class in fixing any kind of issue in a board. In particular I like how you made it into. Twin with that aggressive fin positioning. With that round rail it would be a bucket of fun to surf in small to medium waves (so many twins out there in fish format, but few twins shaped with a round rail and some rocker. Maybe you could retitle the video to “turn on old junker thruster into a awesome twin”
Couldn’t you use some kind of bondo instead of that spackle/joint compound. Because there are lightweight easy sand body fillers of there that are white like that joint compound. Just seems like that joint compound won’t hold up if we’re to get wet.
I kept waiting for him to crack it on the corner of the wall and throw it in the dumpster at the end of the video....Sil laughed until I cried ...how he translates the material into nothing 😁😄😁🤣 😂 😂 😂 🤣 🤣🤣

may I ask why you used joint compound rather than pour foam? seems the joint compound would be heavier and also harder to sand? would you still have used it if raising a compressed deck by half an inch?
Nice job, can't say the paint is to my taste but always good to see an old board get a new lease on life! It's a shame you didn't salvage the original logo .... or was that not original? Was the board a single originally that someone had tried to make a thruster or was in a twin someone had added a trailer to? Good work, look forward to seeing some more! Show us what she surfs like sometime!
Thank you! I love to save logos when I can, but you lose them when you remove the fiberglass. If I can find high res pictures online I’ll print them and can glass them in like the original, but in this case, no luck. The board was originally a thruster- but I have a lot of thrusters… I’m going to get a video up of me surfing this board as soon as I get enough footage!
for my personale taste if you would have stop after the white spiral from the mid that was best look when you started the grey i was yo stooooop then you covered all of that so non of the first spot showed so w/e i guess but aside that great craftmanship gj mate keep on keeping on cheers
Do you know you can add a little of Silica, known as cab o sil or other names, for those rail repairs? If you do know, why dont you use it instead of tape? Fun video.
I used qcell which is similar to cabosil, it’s a thickening agent. I haven’t tried combining the two if that’s what your suggesting? Could be great if it makes it a little stiffer/less drippy.
Nice repair work mate , that fin box jig looks great to get the fins sweet . Just wondering , you spoke about sanding resin ?? Is that just an American version of adding wax in styrene to your resin ?? From an Aussie who doesn't like sanding either 🙄
Question - are you using joint compound just as like a grain filler? At first I thought you were using bondo. I guess if you re-glass the whole thing it doesn’t matter so much.
@@Rogue_wave I rewatched it. Sure looks like theres a screw in there. You can see the shiny metal just below the plane of the glass. Anyway, I think its cool you took a shot at completely strippingna board and rebuilding it. The drywall mud was really interesting. Did it add a lot of weight?
@@kevinm5564 I meant to say screw was already backed out (enough for the fin to go down). But yes the screw is still in the hole. If the screw was all the way in, the fin would never go in the box, no matter if I hit it 100 times with the mallet and chisel. But I see why you’re saying that- the way I edited that part was confusing! Drywall mud will start to add weight if you don’t spend time to sand it back down really well. On this board it barely added any weight.
Hey, rewatching the video, did you route the board directly into the foam or did you skip the glassing of the bottom? If you did do it over the glass, was it only one 4oz? I tried one routing with the one pass drillbit but due to the glass(I sanded it down pretty thin) it got a bunch of resistance. Btw it was a friends drillbit, I don't know how old it was. Again great video, thanks for all the effort
Good question- I laminate the board before routing. The fin boxes are close to the rail so on parts you'll be routing through your lap, IE routing through two layers of 4oz fiberglass. Even on the double layer, your router should cut right through it. What router are you using?
@@Rogue_wave it was not, I couldn't tell you what went wrong, I've seen other people go through fiberglass with router bits. 🤷🏼♂️ either way thanks man for the info. I'll try next time with another router or another bit! Thanks again

Wish you had been a bit more thoughtful on the paint job. Cant say I love it honestly, despite really enjoying watching the entire process here on RUclips. I felt like for all the work you put in, you should’ve just made it look like a serious prize with a more planned out paint job. It was like: dude goes this far just to make a bunch of ugly squiggling with ugly colors? Wtf, kinda shocked me. Like I’ve never put in that much work on something ever to half ass part of it. Idk, just my opinion…not that it matters. Truth is, if you just did solid paint jobs you could probably make money, as art piece or even a board someone would buy to use. cool to see these processes. your music is always so soothing too. Subscribed!
I use Tyvek Tape to seal all my epoxy. The outside is plastic so it won't adhere to the tape and the sticky-ness is almost too much sometimes
I think the surfacing agent is paraffin wax dissolved in styrene, and it floats to the top after its applied making the resin easier to sand
Oh interesting. Yeah I know your right about the SA being styrene based. Didn’t know it was paraffin wax though.

Resin and qcell

Is that joint compound just regular drywall compound? Does it all get messed up if you get a ding that lets water in?
Yes regular just regular joint compound. I don't know, I haven't dinged the board yet! FYI, it's pretty heavy so go easy on it if you use it.
Question - are you using joint compound just as like a grain filler? At first I thought you were using bondo. I guess if you re-glass the whole thing it doesn’t matter so much.
